Dermatographism in a horse

An eight-year-old Thoroughbred gelding with dermatographic urticaria is presented. Forelimb edema and generalized urticaria were the presenting clinical signs. All hematologic and serum biochemical values were normal. Immunologic and histologic evaluation failed to reveal specific abnormalities. During hospitalization, an urticarial response to mechanical pressure (dermatographism) was identified. Clinical responses to corticosteroid and antihistaminic (H1) therapy were equivocal. The condition resolved in five weeks and an etiology was not discovered. A discussion of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of dermatographic urticaria in humans is included with the report.     

Giardiasis in a horse

Giardia infection was believed responsible for chronic diarrhea, weight loss, lethargy, inappetence, and dermatitis in a 4-year-old Thoroughbred horse. Fecal cysts were detected by the zinc sulfate centrifugal flotation method. All clinical signs resolved upon treatment with metronidazole suspension (5 mg/kg body weight per os, TID for 10 days).     

Choledocholithiasis in a horse

Choledocholithiasis was diagnosed in a five-year-old gelding on the basis of laboratory results and histopathology. Surgery was performed to relieve the obstruction. The horse responded favorably and at 39 days postoperatively was clinically and clinicopathologically normal.     

Neuromyotonia in a horse

This article describes the clinical and electromyographic findings of neuromyotonia in a 19‐month‐old male crossbred Quarter Horse that presented with stiffness and muscle asymmetry in the hind limbs as well as sacrococcygeal, paravertebral, and gluteal myokymia. An electromyographic study showed spontaneous continuous muscle fiber activity with high‐frequency discharges, fibrillations, positive sharp waves, fasciculation potentials, and complex repetitive discharges. Histological examination of the gluteal muscle showed a mixed neurogenic and myopathic pattern. The findings are consistent with neuromyotonia.     

Listeria keratitis in a horse

Listeria monocytogenes is ubiquitous in the environment but is rarely reported as a cause of keratitis in animals. In this case, a mare was presented with epiphora and evidence of pain in the right eye. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from a corneal lesion, and bacteria were also seen in the cytologic evaluation. This is the first reported case of ulcerative keratitis associated with L. monocytogenes in a horse.     

Laryngeal dyskinesia in a horse

A 3-year-old Warmblood gelding was evaluated for intermittent respiratory distress and an inspiratory noise. These signs were mainly observed at exercise but sometimes occurred at rest as well. At the age of 2 months, a severe episode of respiratory distress had necessitated a temporary tracheotomy, which had then healed uneventfully. Examination of the patient and resting endoscopy revealed no structural laryngeal alterations. Exercise endoscopy revealed episodes of active bilateral laryngeal adduction during inspiration. Spirometrically, a corresponding impairment of inspiratory airflow was identified. These abnormalities were most pronounced at the trot but they occurred at magnitudes of inspiratory airflow lower than those inducing dynamic arytenoid collapse in horses with recurrent laryngeal neuropathy. Therefore, the diagnosis of a laryngeal dyskinesia characterised by an active bilateral arytenoid adduction during inspiration was made. No specific treatment was implemented. Three years later, the owner reported that the condition was markedly improved and the horse was used for pleasure riding.     

Cecocolic intussusception in a horse

A 10-month-old 160 kg bilateral cryptorchid Quarter Horse was presented for acute colic and profuse diarrhea. The horse was a bottle-raised orphan with stunted growth, a pot belly and a rough hair coat. The colt had been on a good deworming program and had a hearty appetite until the onset of colic. Economic considerations prohibited a thorough laboratory evaluation and surgical intervention.
