A bacteriological investigation was performed on 145 heifers and 55 dry-cows with clinical mastitis during July 1976–June 1977. Areas in Sweden from which heifer and dry-cow mastitis has been reported as a problem were included. Mastitis occurred more frequently in the Swedish Fresian breed (SLB) than in the Swedish Red and White breed (SRB) of dairy cattle. C. pyogenes was isolated in pure culture from 15% and 4%, respectively, of the cases of heifer and dry-cow mastitis from which this bacterium could be isolated. Corresponding figures for pure culture of P. indolicus, micro-aerophilic cocci and S. dysgalactiae were 2% and 0%, 0% and 0% and 44% and 35%, respectively. The bacteria most frequently isolated together with C. pyogenes in the heifer material were P. indolicus (69%), the microaerophilic cocci (59%) and S. dysgalactiae (31%). Corresponding data for the dry-cow material were 92%, 35% and 50%, respectively. Thus, C. pyogenes was the causative agent of heifer and dry-cow mastitis in only about 40% of the mastitis cases investigated, and the most characteristic feature of these forms of mastitis involving C. pyogenes was mixed infection. 相似文献

The German wasp, Vespula germanica has been observed to injure teats of dairy cows, causing lesions that are associated with clinical and subclinical mastitis. The presence of skin lesions on the teats, caused by the wasps, was recorded in a dairy cattle herd located in the Samaria foothills during July-October 1999. Wasp-inflicted injuries were found in 43.6% (58 of 133) of the adult cows and 1.4% (one of 71) of the first-calving cows. They were located in 42.4% of cows (n = 25) on all quarters, 18 cows (30.5%) had lesions on the front quarters and 27.1% (n = 16) of cows on the hind quarters only. Clinical and subclinical mastitis were diagnosed in 61% (36 of 59) and 28.8% (17 of 59), respectively, of the injured adult and first-calving cows. The most common bacterial isolates from the mastitic cows were Staphylococcus aureus 45.1% (n = 14), Streptococcus dysgalactiae 16.1% (n = 5), Streptococcus spp. 19.4% (n = 7) and others 13.9% (n = 5). The loss of milk production was estimated at 300 kg milk for each cow injured by wasps and exhibiting clinical mastitis. An increase in the bulk-milk somatic cell count, from 186 x 103 at 1 month prior to the outbreak to a peak of 1200 x 10(3) in the post-outbreak month, was noted. The culling rate reached 13.6% (eight of 59) of the affected cows. In summary, the considerable economic losses caused by the wasp infestation resulted from decreased milk production and a decline in milk quality, culling of affected cows, and increased demand for use of drugs and veterinary care. 相似文献

A total of 143 secretions from clinical cases of summer mastitis (SM) in grazing cattle and from 89 cases of pyogenes mastitis (PM) in stabled cattle were examined bacteriologically. The typical bacteriological finding was a mixed flora in which the predominant organisms were Actinomyces pyogenes (SM-70%, PM-85%), Peptostreptococcus indolicus (54%, 54%), a microaerophilic coccus (Stuart-Schwan coccus) (26%, 25%), Fusobacterium necrophorum biovar B (22%, 12%), Bacteroides melaninogenicus (20%, 9%) and Streptococcus dysgalactiae (21%, 5%). All except six cases occurred in non-lactating animals or within three weeks after parturition. The majority of animals (about 90%) had only one quarter affected and no differences in quarter distribution were observed between the two groups. 相似文献

A total of 166 samples of secretions collected from Danish heifers suffering from clinically diagnosed summer mastitis were examined bacteriologically. One hundred and sixty three samples yielded positive findings whereas no growth was obtained from 3 specimens. The majority of samples revealed a mixed flora in which the predominant components were Actinomyces pyogenes, Peptostreptococcus indolicus, a microaerophilic coccus (Stuart-Schwan coccus), Fusobacterium necrophorum, Bacteriodes melaninogenicus and Streptococcus dysgalactiae. Pure cultures were recovered in only 7% of cases. P. indolicus was isolated from 875 of the cases, a microaerophilic coccus from 84%, A. pyogenes from 72%, Fusobacterium necrophorum from 52%, Str. dysgalactiae from 37%, B. melaninogenicus from 33% and various unidentified obligate anaerobic Gram-negative rods from 31%. The results confirm the complex bacterial aetiology of summer mastitis. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to describe the frequency of occurrence of clinical mastitis in dairy herds in Ontario. The study group consisted of 65 dairy farms involved in a 2-year observational study, which included recording all clinical mastitis cases and milk sampling of quarters with clinical mastitis. Lactational incidence risks of 9.8% for abnormal milk only, 8.2% for abnormal milk with a hard or swollen udder, and 4.4% for abnormal milk plus systemic signs of illness related to mastitis were calculated for 2840 cows and heifers. Overall, 19.8% of cows experienced one or more cases of clinical mastitis during location. Teat injuries occurred in 2.1% of lactations. Standard bacteriology was performed on pretreatment milk samples from 834 cows with clinical mastitis. The bacteria isolated were Staphylococcus aureus (6.7%), Streptococcus agalactiae (0.7%), other Streptococcus spp. (14.1%), coliforms (17.2%), gram-positive bacilli (5.5%), Corynebacterium bovis (1.7%), and other Staphylococcus spp. (28.7%). There was no growth in 17.7% of samples, and 8.3% of samples were contaminated. Clinical mastitis is a common disease in dairy cows in Ontario; approximately 1 in 5 cow lactations have at lease one episode of clinical mastitis. There is, however, considerable variation in the incidence of clinical mastitis among farms. The majority of 1st cases of clinical mastitis occur early in lactation, and the risk of clinical mastitis increases with increasing parity. Environmental, contagious, and minor pathogens were all associated with cases of clinical mastitis. 相似文献

In this study the sensitivity of three methods of isolation of udder pathogens from milk samples from subclinical mastitis cases was compared. For analysis 1827 quarter milk samples were selected. Milk was cultured using a standard culture technique (0.01 ml of fresh milk streaked on a sheep blood agar plate and on Edward's medium). In addition, an inoculum of 0.01 ml of the original milk sample was incubated for 24h at 37 degrees C in broth, followed by culture using the standard culture technique. In the third method, the whole milk sample was frozen for 24h, and then incubated for 24h at 37 degrees C, followed by culture using standard culture technique. The isolation percentage of Staphylococcus aureus was 4.7% for standard culture technique, 14.2% for incubation in broth, and 21.5% for the combination of freezing plus incubation. Isolation percentage of Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Streptococcus agalactiae was highest using the standard culture technique, while isolation rate of Streptococcus uberis was not different among the three methods used. With increasing somatic cell count, the likelihood of S. aureus, S. dysgalactiae and S. uberis isolation increased.Based on the relative sensitivity, defined as the isolation rate using a single technique compared to the isolation rate of the three techniques together, a combination of standard culture technique and freezing plus incubation was most attractive for achieving a high isolation rate of S. agalactiae and S. dysgalactiae. Relative sensitivity of S. uberis isolation was highest using the standard culture technique and incubation in broth, while S. aureus was most often isolated using a combination of incubation in broth and freezing plus incubation. A combination of the three methods increased the isolation rate for S. dysgalactiae, S. uberis and S. aureus. The standard culture technique, together with the combination of freezing plus incubation, can be recommended for isolating major udder pathogens. If S. aureus is the pathogen of main interest, using incubation in broth together with the combination of freezing plus incubation performed best. 相似文献

A buffalo disease, called "Degnala", causing lameness, edema, gangrenous ulceration of hooves or tail, emaciation, recumbency and eventual death, occurs in Eastern Nepal. Clinical examinations manifested lice eggs on hairs, bradycardia, hypothermia, dehydration, exanthema and icterus. Hematologically, increase of band neutrophil, giant platelet, hypoalbuminemia and hyperglobulinemia were characteristics. Microscopically, dark blue tiny particles were seen on red blood cell (RBC) after Giemsa staining. Administration of tetracycline at an early stage of the disease was effective. 相似文献

The presence of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-producing and multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRP) strains among bovine isolates of Gram-negative bacilli, and O-serotypes of bovine Serratia marcescens and P. aeruginosa isolates have been reported rarely. The aims of this study were to (1) elucidate antimicrobial susceptibilities and O-serotypes of P. aeruginosa and S. marcescens isolates from bovine mastitis and the presence of MBL-producers and MDRP strains among them and (2) evaluate their relationships to human isolates. We investigated the MICs of 24 antimicrobials and O-serotypes for 116 P. aeruginosa and 55 S. marcescens isolates in Japan, primarily in 2006. A total of 171 isolates exhibited high antimicrobial susceptibilities with the exception of a partial drug. P. aeruginosa isolates exhibited high susceptibilities of ≥ 95.7% to ciprofloxacin, imipenem, meropenem, piperacillin, ceftazidime, cefepime, cefoperazone/sulbactam, amikacin, tobramycin, and gentamicin; however, they exhibited a susceptibility of only 69.8% to aztreonam. They exhibited substantial resistances to ceftriaxone, enrofloxacin, cefotaxime, and moxalactam. S. marcescens isolates exhibited high susceptibilities of ≥ 90.9% to kanamycin, ceftiofur, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, and the 15 aforementioned drugs, but exhibited resistance to minocycline. Neither MBL-producers nor MDRP strains were detected among the 171 strains. The dominant serotypes of P. aeruginosa isolates were OG, OA, OB, OI, OF, OE, and OK; those of S. marcescens isolates were O6 and O5. Every S. marcescens isolate was pigmented. These findings suggest that bovine P. aeruginosa and S. marcescens isolates differ from human isolates from both antibiogram and phenotypic perspectives, and could help to evaluate differences in bacteriological characteristics between bovine and human isolates. 相似文献

AIM: To compare the proportions of clinical and bacteriological cure of glands of dairy cows diagnosed with clinical mastitis, following treatment with one of three different intramammary antibiotic preparations. METHODS: Cows from dairy cow herds (n=28) across New Zealand which were diagnosed with clinical mastitis in one or more glands at any stage of lactation were randomly assigned at the cow level within sequentially presented groups of three animals to be treated with one of three intramammary antibiotics. The treatments were 1 g procaine penicillin, 0.25 g cefuroxime, and a combination of 1 g procaine penicillin and 0.5 g dihydrostreptomycin (DHS). All treatments were infused on three occasions at 12-hourly intervals. Duplicate milk samples were collected for bacteriology before initial treatment, and 21-42 days later. Logistic regression or generalised linear mixed models were used to analyse the proportion of cows or quarters retreated for mastitis within 30 days of initial treatment ('clinical treatment failure'), and the proportion of glands from which bacteria were isolated initially but from which the same bacterial species was not re-isolated ('bacteriological cure'). RESULTS: The annual herd average cumulative incidence rate of clinical mastitis was 12.7 cases/100 cows. The incidence rate was higher in young (2-year-old) and old (> or = 9-year-old) cows relative to 3- and 4-year-old cows, and was higher in Friesian than Jersey or crossbred cows. Streptococcus uberis was the pathogen most commonly isolated, and its relative prevalence declined with time postpartum. Cows treated with cefuroxime were more likely (p<0.01) to be re-treated for clinical mastitis in the 30 days after initial treatment than cows treated with procaine penicillin or procaine penicillin and DHS. Bacteriological cure occurred in 74% of treated glands and there was no difference in the proportion of cures among the treatments (p=0.4). The proportion of cures was lower when treatment occurred 28-72 days after calving (p<0.01) and if a major pathogen was isolated (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: There was no benefit in terms of clinical or bacteriological cure rate in treating clinical mastitis cases with the combination of procaine penicillin and DHS compared to treatment with procaine penicillin alone. The proportion of clinical mastitis cases re-treated differed among herds, and more cows treated with cefuroxime were retreated within 30 days of initial treatment. However, the bacteriological cure proportion was the same among the treatments. Cure proportions were lower in cows from which major mastitis pathogens were isolated and when treatment commenced 28-72 days after calving. 相似文献

The objectives of the work were to study the features of experimentally induced canine mastitis and to present hypotheses regarding the pathogenesis of the disease. The right caudal abdominal mammary gland of six bitches was inoculated on day 8 after whelping with Staphylococcus intermedius to induce mastitis; adjacent mammary glands were used as controls. Clinical examination, bacteriological and cytological (whiteside test, Giemsa) examination of mammary secretion, as well as haematological tests were performed from 5 days before until 34 days after challenge. Mastectomy was sequentially performed 1, 2, 4, 18, 26 and 34 days after challenge in each of the bitches, in order to carry out a pathological examination of mammary glands. All animals developed clinical mastitis: challenged glands became painful, hot, enlarged and oedematous; secretion was brownish, purulent, with flakes or clots, subsequently becoming yellowish and thick. Staphylococci were isolated from all inoculated glands (up to 22 days). WST was positive in 41/46 samples from inoculated glands and 66/138 samples from control glands; neutrophils predominated during the acute stage. Blood leukocyte counts increased, whilst platelet counts decreased. Gross pathological findings initially included congestion, purulent discharge and subcutaneous oedema; then abscesses, brownish areas and size decrease were seen. Salient histopathological features were initially neutrophilic infiltration, haemorrhages, destruction of mammary epithelial cells and alveoli, and then infiltration by lymphocytes, shrunken alveoli, loss of glandular architecture and fibrous tissue proliferation. We conclude that in bitches, intrammamary inoculation of Staphylococcus intermedius can induce clinical mastitis, followed by subclinical disease. The disorder is characterized by bacterial isolation and leukocyte influx in challenged glands, by leukocyte presence in adjacent mammary glands, by increased blood leukocyte counts and by destruction of mammary parenchyma. 相似文献

A mastitis survey involving 74 Ontario dairy herds was conducted. The prevalence of infection at the quarter level was found to be 4.1% with Streptococcus agalactiae, 4.5% with other streptococcal species and 8.0% with Staphylococcus aureus. Regardless of the infection status, the geometric mean somatic cell count was found to increase with age of the cow but no increase was observed with increasing stage of lactation. The percentage of cows from which a bacterial pathogen was isolated increased with age but not with stage of lactation. 相似文献

Twenty cows and three heifers with summer mastitis-like signs were included in the study. Forty aerobic and 38 anaerobic bacterial isolates representing 23 different species were isolated from udder secretions, the mean number of species being 3.4/sample. Pathogens most often were recovered in quantities exceeding 10(5) CFU/ml. Growth of pathogenic bacteria in the blood was found in only one case. Most cases occurred in housed animals and had often been preceded by teat injury. No anaerobic growth was found in milk samples of a control group consisting of 29 cows with ordinary acute mastitis. Values of indicators of inflammation in milk (NAGase and plasmin activity) were high, mean values being 914.1 and 1.3 units. The animals with aerobic/anaerobic mastitis were treated using various antimicrobial agents. All but three quarters were lost to milk production. Two animals with complete recovery were given a combination of penicillin G and tinidazole. 相似文献

Sera collected from 511 unvaccinated urban dogs were examined for antibodies to serovars of Leptospira interrogans representing nine serogroups found in the United Kingdom. The point estimates of the seroprevalence of leptospiral titres in Edinburgh and Glasgow at a minimum serum dilution of 1:10 were 23-5 per cent and 27-5 per cent, respectively, and, in Glasgow, the seroprevalence was significantly higher in males than females, for both crude and age-adjusted values. Serovar canicola was the dominant strain identified, followed by serovars icterohaemorrhagiae, bratislava and ballum. Antibodies against serovars javanica and hardjo also were detected. Urine samples were collected from 84 of the male blood-sampled dogs, and cultured. Serovars canicola and bratislava were isolated from three and four samples, respectively. 相似文献

Forty-six Awassi sheep flocks selected by stratified random sampling were subjected to a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of intramammary infections, to assess the influence of flock size and parity on the prevalence of somatic cell count (SCC) and to identify major udder pathogens. Of the 3472 udder halves examined, 29.8% had over 106 SCC/ml and 0.03% had dry teats due to chronic mastitis. Flocks with 30–49 milking ewes (small flock size) were much younger (P < 0.001) than flocks with 50–99 ewes (medium) and flocks with ≥ 100 ewes (large). Pairwise analysis of the InSCC of both halves of the udders revealed significant mean differences for small and large flock size (P < 0.05), and for medium and large flock size (P < 0.001). Mean InSCC was lower (P < 0.05) in samples obtained from the left half compared with samples of the right half of the udder. Multiparous ewes had higher (P < 0.001) mean InSCC than primiparous ewes. Also, ewes with twin lambs had higher (P < 0.001) mean InSCC in the right half of the udder compared with single-lamb ewes. Samples collected in January (winter) had lower (P < 0.05) mean InSCC compared with samples collected in June. The most common organisms isolated from subclinical mastitis cases were coagulase-negative Staphylococci (17.8%), E. coli (13.6%), Streptococcus agalactiae (6.8%) and Staphylococcus aureus (6.8%). Of the 46 flocks, 20 were monitored monthly for 9 consecutive months to determine the incidence of clinical mastitis diagnosed by shepherds or/and sheep farmers with major pathogens. The incidence of clinical mastitis (expressed as the number of clinical cases per 100 ewe-months) were 2.1 ± 1.9 (SD), 1.9 ± 1.1, and 1.2 + 2.1 for small, medium and large flocks size strata, respectively. The overall population estimate was 1.7 ± 0.02 cases per 100 ewe-months. The most-common clinical isolates were S. aureus (22% of all clinical isolates) and E. coli (14.2%). 相似文献

To investigate the effects of total mixed ration (TMR) silage, which contained brewers grain and rice straw as a substitute for conventional concentrate on feed intake and milk production in middle‐to‐late lactation buffaloes, four multiparous Murrah buffaloes were assigned to a 3 × 3 Latin square design experiment. The TMR silage, which had higher neutral and acid detergent fiber contents and digestibility than concentrate (P < 0.05) and similar crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrient (TDN) contents with concentrate were used for the lactation experiment. The treatments were control (CTL) fed concentrate at 0.6% of body weight (BW), and T1 and T2 fed the TMR silage at 0.6 and 1.2% of BW on a dry matter (DM) basis, respectively, with rice straw ad libitum. Daily intakes of DM, CP and TDN, and BW change were higher in T2 than in CTL and T1 (P < 0.05). Although milk composition did not differ among the treatments, milk yield (MY) was higher in T2 (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in MY/DM intake and MY/TDN intake among the treatments. The increase of BW and MY in middle‐to‐late lactation buffaloes might have been due to high TDN intake from supplementary TMR silage. 相似文献
