The area of skin supplied by afferent fibers in a peripheral nerve is called the cutaneous area (CA) of that nerve. The CA of hind limb nerves that were responsive to movement of wool/hairs were mapped neurophysiologically in 25 barbiturate-anesthetized sheep. The CA of the dorsal cutaneous branches of the caudal lumbar spinal nerves and of the sacral spinal nerves extended over the lateral aspect of the thigh. The CA of the lateral cutaneous femoral nerve was restricted to the stifle region, that of the saphenous nerve did not reach the digits, that of the deep peroneal nerve lay between the 3rd and 4th digits, and that of the lateral plantar nerve was confined to the lateral aspect of the 4th digit. The CA of the superficial peroneal nerve enveloped the dorsal, medial, and lateral aspects of the distal portions of the hind limb. In some sheep, the boundaries of the CA of the superficial peroneal nerve were juxtaposed caudally in such way that the medial plantar nerve did not have an autonomous zone. Differences in sizes of the CA resulted in corresponding differences in the overlap between adjacent CA and concomitant differences in the sizes of autonomous zones.  相似文献

The area of skin supplied by the afferent fibers in one cutaneous nerve is called the cutaneous area (CA) for that nerve. The CA of peripheral branches of lumbar and sacral spinal nerves responsive to the stimulation of hair follicle mechanoreceptors were mapped in 27 dogs. The amount of overlap among the CA was similar to that found for other CA of the body. The CA of peripheral branches of the sciatic nerve were restricted to the lateral, cranial, and caudal aspects of the pelvic limb distal to the stifle. The CA of the saphenous nerve was located on the medial side of the limb, except for a small area located on the lateral side of the crus. The distal part of the CA of the saphenous nerve was completely overlapped in the hind paw by branches of the superficial peroneal nerve laterally and the medial plantar branch of the tibial nerve medially. The CA for the deep peroneal nerve was located on the dorsal surface of the webbing between digits 2 and 3 and the adjacent skin of these digits. The CA of the plantar branches of the tibial nerve were small in comparison with the diameter of the nerve, suggesting that these branches contained nerve fibers supplying other, deeper structures in the hindpaw and that damage to these nerves would interfere with cutaneous sensation in only a small region on the plantar surface of the hindpaw. Knowledge of the CA of the various branches of the sciatic nerve allows more accurate localization of injury to the sciatic nerve or its branches by using areas of anesthesia.  相似文献

Prenatal exposure to endogenous or exogenous androgens alters the development of the female reproductive tract. Although lesions in ovaries and external genitalia of androgenized female sheep have been reported, lesions of the tubular genitalia have not. Testosterone propionate (TP) or dihydrotestosterone (DHT) was administered by intramuscular injection twice weekly to 32 ewes from 30 to 90 days of pregnancy. The ewes lambed normally. The reproductive tracts from 24 treated and 13 control postpubertal female offspring were examined at 10 months of age. The ovaries, oviducts, and uteri were grossly and histologically normal in both TP- and DHT-exposed sheep. However, in the DHT-treated sheep, the uterus connected to a misshapen, saccular vagina that opened into the urethra; in the TP-treated sheep, it ended in a blind sac. In both TP- and DHT-treated sheep, the urethra was approximately 5 times longer than that of control sheep, and it resembled a male urethra with bilateral male accessory genital glands. The urethra terminated in a fully developed penis in both TP- and DHT-treated sheep, and a scrotal sac was present (without testes). These results show that prenatal exposure of female sheep to exogenous androgens results in masculinization of the tubular and external genitalia.  相似文献

A seven-year-old Quarter Horse had a serious external genitalia trauma with severe swelling of ventrum, penis, prepuce and scrotum after falling over a fence. Appropriated treatment was rapidly started after clinical examination. During recovery period, the spermatogenesis assess by semen evaluation was not possible due to stallion's inability to ejaculate. Therefore, for testicular evaluation fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was performed. The first FNAC showed a deviation of germ cell line towards immature cells, mainly by primary spermatocytes (59.5%) with very few late spermatids and spermatozoa (2.5% each), and an increased Sertoli cells/germ cells ratio (478/100), which characterized testicular degeneration. One month after the first FNAC, the second exam presented a drastic decrease of Sertoli cells/germ cells ratio (7/100) and marked increase of mature cell number, specially by early and late spermatids (50% and 24.5%, respectively). In this case, the results of both FNAC could demonstrate a partial recovery of spermatogenesis activity. Two months later, the stallion had mated two mares successfully and they became pregnant. In conclusion, the adequate treatment allowed a complete recovery of the stallion's reproductive function, and since semen collection was impossible during treatment, testicular FNAC showed to be an efficient diagnostic method for evaluating acute damage in the spermatogenesis.  相似文献

Having imported a 15-month-old Clun Forest ram from England with the intention of grading-up the small-bodied native ewe indigenous to the Kenya Highlands it was something of a shock to find the weight of the ram when loaded aboard the Mombasa-bound ship was no less than 250 lb. On arrival, he appeared to have lost little if any weight during the three weeks spent upon the journey, and it was very apparent that to let him loose in a flock of ewes, the average weight of which was little more than 50 lb, was asking for serious trouble, with probably few lambs to show for it at the end of the season. In any case, if the grading-up process was to be of any real value, this ram would have to sire far more ewes than he was physically capable of, even in normal circumstances of weight and size. As a result of this, artificial breeding was developed as a flock policy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To define the optimum period for sexing of Saanen goat fetuses by use of transrectal ultrasonography. ANIMALS: 82 Saanen goats pregnant with 124 fetuses. PROCEDURES: Fetal sexing was performed on the basis of the final location of the genital tubercle or identification of external genitalia. In experiment 1, fetuses (n = 78) were monitored every 48 hours from days 40 to 60 of gestation, whereas for experiment 2, 46 fetuses were examined only once between days 47 and 77 of gestation. RESULTS: For experiment 1, accuracy of fetal sexing was 20 of 20 (100%) for a single fetus, 39 of 42 (92.8%) for twin fetuses, and 10 of 16 (62.5%) for triplet fetuses. Diagnostic accuracy was significantly lower for triplet fetuses than that for single or twin fetuses. Final location of the genital tubercle was detected between 45 and 55 days of gestation (mean +/- SEM, 48.9 +/- 1.8 days). For experiment 2, accuracy of fetal sexing for a single fetus (24/24 [100%]) was significantly higher than the accuracy for twin fetuses (16/22 [72.7%]). Considering all fetuses that were born, accuracy of diagnosis was 69 of 78 (88.4%) for experiment 1 and 40 of 46 (86.9%) for experiment 2. Accuracy did not differ significantly between experiments. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Real-time ultrasonography after day 55 of gestation is a suitable method for determination of sex of Saanen goat fetuses by observation of the genital tubercle or identification of external genitalia.  相似文献

Portions of penis and prepuce were collected from 24 bulls with current or recent Tritrichomonas foetus infection. Epididymides were collected from seven of the bulls, and seminal vesicles and prostate were collected from four. Following immunohistochemical staining with two monoclonal antibodies (34.7C4.4 and TF1.15) prepared against T. foetus surface antigens, trichomonads were identified in sections from 15 of the bulls. Organisms were most often located in penile crypts in the midshaft and caudal regions and less often in preputial crypts. Trichomonads were not observed in sections from other genitalia or in subepithelial tissue. T. foetus antigen, however, was present in the cytoplasm of some epithelial cells and the cytoplasm of some mononuclear cells in subepithelial lymphoid aggregates and follicles. Preputial smegma was collected from 16 T. foetus-infected bulls and from 16 control bulls with negative T. foetus cultures. Preputial antibody levels to TF1.17, a surface antigen of T. foetus, were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Preputial secretions from infected bulls contained specific antibody of each isotype and subisotype tested. IgG1 responses were the greatest, IgM and IgA responses were approximately equal, and IgG2 responses were low. Each isotype and subisotype response in infected bulls was significantly greater than that in the controls. These results confirm previous speculation concerning anatomical sites of infection and suggest that parasite antigen can be taken up and processed locally, resulting in deposition of specific IgG1, IgG2, IgA, and IgM antibodies in the preputial cavity.  相似文献

B6.Cg-Tg(Thy1-YFP)16Jrs/J transgenic mice were created to express the yellow fluorescent protein gene driven by a mouse Thy1 promoter that labeled motor and sensory neurons such that individual nerves could be followed. These mice were used to identify nerves in the skin that innervate the erector pili and panniculus carnosus muscle. Whole mounts demonstrated yellow fluorescent protein expression in nerves of the skin, which was confirmed by labeling the neuromuscular junction with fluorescinated α-bungarotoxin. Frozen and paraffin-embedded skin sections revealed innervation of the panniculus carnosus muscle. Paraffin sections labeled with an anti-green fluorescent protein antibody revealed innervation of the panniculus carnosus as well as the erector pili muscle and around the hair follicle bulge.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine if breeding ewe lambs (hoggets) would influence subsequent two-year-old (two-tooth) ewe liveweight and reproductive performance and their lamb's performance to weaning. Two-tooth Romney ewes that had been bred and lambed as a hogget (n = 505) were compared with those of 196 ewes that were bred as a hogget but did not lamb and 235 ewes that were not presented for breeding as a hogget. Hogget lambing resulted in reduced (P < 0.05) two-tooth liveweight and body condition score at breeding although still present this liveweight difference was reduced by two-tooth lamb weaning. Two-tooth ewes that had previously lambed as a hogget had greater (P < 0.05) returns to service rates and lower (P < 0.05) fecundity (multiple-bearing/two-tooth bred) than those that were bred for the first time. Two-tooth lamb liveweights were unaffected by hogget lambing. These results show that hogget lambing had a small negative effect on subsequent two-tooth reproductive performance. This was most likely caused by reduced liveweight at two-tooth breeding and indicates that farmers need to ensure management practices are in place to reduce the impact of hogget lambing on two-tooth liveweight.  相似文献

A gel diffusion test with sonicated Brucella ovis antigen and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on heat-extracted antigen were used to distinguish false from true reactions in a complement fixation test based on heat-extracted antigen. Of 142 complement fixing reactors (occurring in supposedly Brucellu ovis-free, accredited flocks), the gel diffusion test correctly identified the status of 139 animals as compared to 128 with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A combination of the two methods resulted in a correct identification of 141 animals. The procedures provide an easy, cheap and quick way to determine the true status of reactors that show up during routine use of the complement fixation test in Brucella ovis re-accreditation procedures.  相似文献

A retrospective analysis was performed on 48 cases of suspected neoplasia involving the equine external genitalia. Forty nine squamous cell carcinomata (SCC) and 23 squamous papillomata (SP) were identified. Two cases of epithelial hyperplasia and one case of habronemiasis were also recognised histopathologically. The glans penis was the most common site of tumour development accounting for 53 per cent of cases of SCC and 61 per cent of SP. The urethral diverticulum, urethral process or urethra was involved in 27.6 per cent (8/29) of cases of SCC. Twelve per cent (5/41) of cases of SCC were confirmed to have metastatic involvement of the local lymph nodes. Papillomata showing pre-malignant changes were identified in five cases. Seventy five per cent (36/48) of the animals presented were ponies. All were geldings, mean age 16.5 years. Penile amputation and urethrostomy, preputial ablation and proximal urethrostomy or local excision were used in the surgical management of these animals; three cases were inoperable and destroyed at presentation. Oedema, haemorrhage and stenosis of the urethrostomy site were encountered as post operative complications. Sixty six per cent (6/9) of animals with SCC of the glans penis (without urethral involvement), which had a known history over the follow up period, treated by penile amputation and urethrostomy survived for longer than 18 months. Similarly, of those with urethral involvement only 28.6 per cent (2/7) survived for a similar follow-up period. SCC not uncommonly affects the external genitalia of aged pony geldings and frequently the glans penis. If the lesion is identified before local metastasis occurs, penile amputation and urethrostomy is indicated and the prognosis is favourable.  相似文献

Cheek pouches have evolved from the oral cavity in rodents and act as temporary food storage repositories. There are two types of opening, internal and external. Details about the complex cutaneous muscles controlling the pouches have still not been fully elucidated. To understand the shared and derived traits of the muscles surrounding the cheek pouch and their innervation, we carried out an evolutionary morphological study using two desert kangaroo rats (Dipodomys deserti) and three plains pocket gophers (Geomys bursarius) from each of the two families equipped with external cheek pouches, and four Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) with internal cheek pouches. The most conspicuous derived trait of the muscles between the external and internal cheek pouches, the sphincter sacculi, surrounds almost all of the edge of the outer entrance of the pouch. It is present in both species with external pouches, but not in hamsters, which have internal pouches. Our neurological findings demonstrate that most pouch muscles are innervated by both the facial and the cervical nerves, regardless of the pouch type. In these dually innervated muscles, the ventromedial part of the muscles tends to be innervated dominantly or uniquely by the cervical nerves, which usually enter from the superficial or lateral aspect. As a trait shared with the cervical nerves innervating the propatagial muscles in aerodynamic mammals such as bats and flying squirrels, and panniculus carnosus in most mammals, our neurological evidence suggests that the cervical nerve has the potential to innervate derived cutaneous muscles in the cervicofacial region.  相似文献
