Fenbendazole, methyl-5(phenylthio)-2-benzimidazolecarbamate, a new broad-spectrum anthelmintic, was evaluated against the adult Dictyocaulus viviparus, lungworm of cattle, in artificially infected calves. At a dosage of 5 mg/kg of body weight, fenbendazole removed 100% of the worms if given as an oral suspension, and 99.7% of the worms if given as a feed additive.  相似文献

Anthelmintic activity of albendazole against adult Dictyocaulus viviparus was evaluated in a controlled experiment. Calves were raised nematode-free to approximately 8 weeks of age and were each given 4,000 infective 3rd-stage larvae. Twenty calves with patent parasitisms were allotted to 2 groups of 10 calves each. Calves in group 1 were used as nonmedicated controls, and calves in group 2 were given albendazole in paste formulation at the dosage concentration of 7.5 mg/kg of body weight on the 30th day after administration of infective larvae. At necropsy, nonmedicated control calves had a total of 308 adult D viviparus, whereas the albendazole-treated calves had 11, for an average efficacy of 96.4%. These reductions were statistically highly significant (P less than 0.01). At necropsy, none of the treated calves was passing 1st-stage C viviparus larvae in their feces, whereas control calves were passing an average of 46 larvae/10 g of feces.  相似文献

The efficacy of levamisole pour-on against Dictyocaulus viviparus was compared to that of subcutaneous levamisole injection. Eighteen calves were raised individually and artifically infected with D. viviparus larvae. Faecal samples were collected 27 and 28 days later and larvae per gram (l.p.g.) determined. The animals were then divided into three comparable groups. Group 1 animals remained untreated as controls. Group 2 animals received levamisole 10% w/v subcutaneous injection at a dose of 5 mg kg-1 and Group 3 received levamisole pour-on 20% w/v at a rate of 10 mg kg-1 applied transdermally. Results of l.p.g. measurements from faecal samples taken 7 and 8 days post-treatment indicated a dramatic reduction in the worm burden of animals in both treatment groups. Necropsies at 14 days post-treatment revealed few adult worms in these groups, indicating a 99 and 98% kill rate for pouron and subcutaneous injection, respectively.  相似文献

In seven calves we studied experimental invasions by sporocysts of the Sarcocystis cruzi (S. bovicanis) species, isolated from faeces of dingo dogs. Out of clinical changes, an increase in body temperature to 39.6 to 40.5 degrees C is characteristic in the fourth to the eighth week of disease, relaxed attitude of animals, progressive thinning down, anaemia of mucous membranes, diarrhoea and total dehydration. The post-mortem examination completes this observation with generalized hyperplasia of lymphatic nodes to haemorrhagic lymphadenitis and small petechial haematomata on serous coats, particularly on epicardium. Schizonts in the endothelium of capillaries in various organs were evaluated as specific lesions, demonstrated within 26 days from invasion in one calf. From 46 days after invasion we found muscular cysts in three other calves. The titres of sera in all experimental calves obtained with the NFR method are also evaluated as specific. Invaded calves died gradually between the 26th and 59th day, control calves were slaughtered and no sarcocysts were found.  相似文献

Eighteen calves aged approximately three months were each infected with Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae at a rate of 30/kg bodyweight. Seven days later they were randomly allocated to three groups of six animals. Calves of group 1 were controls. Calves of group 2 were given levamisole at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg and calves of group 3 were given ivermectin at a dose rate of 200 micrograms/kg. The anthelmintic activity of these two drugs was compared using clinical, functional, parasitological and pathological parameters. The results showed that the efficacy of ivermectin, given at a therapeutic dose, against immature D viviparus was higher than that of levamisole, given at double the recommended dose.  相似文献

Distribution of Pasteurella haemolytica in the respiratory tracts of calves with no apparent clinical signs of illness and those infected experimentally with Dictyocaulus viviparus was determined so as to define carrier sites for this organism. The calves had been positive by nasopharyngeal swab for either P haemolytica A2 or A1 for at least two months or for over a month, respectively, before slaughter. P haemolytica A1 was acquired following horizontal spread from other infected calves. It was observed post mortem that P haemolytica A1 or A2 resided in the tonsils and retropharyngeal lymph nodes of calves of both groups. In addition to these sites, P haemolytica A1 was also isolated from the right cranial lung lobe of one of the calves from the D viviparus infected group although there was no evidence of pasteurella associated pneumonia. It was concluded that tonsil and retropharyngeal lymph nodes appear to be the most important carrier sites for P haemolytica when compared to other tissues of the bovine respiratory tract.  相似文献

Seventy-one worm-free Friesian calves were allocated by weight to three trial groups (1, 3 and 4) of 18 and a control group (2) of 17 animals. Calves in group 1 were vaccinated with a bovine lungworm oral vaccine on days 0 and 28, and on day 42 all groups were turned out to graze together on pasture known to be infected with Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae. Twenty-eight days after first exposure to infection one control calf died of parasitic bronchitis. Anthelmintic medication consisting of two doses of levamisole (7 . 5 mg/kg) at 14 day intervals was promptly administered to group 3 calves and three doses at the same intervals to group 4 calves. All calves were challenged with 20,000 infective D viviparus larvae on day 147. Calves were weighed every 14 days throughout the trial which ended 42 days after challenge. Pasture contamination and infectivity were monitored by pasture larval counts and tracer calves. Statistically there was no significant difference between the performances of treated and vaccinated groups before challenge but all were significantly superior to the control group. After challenge the productivity of all experimental groups was temporarily depressed but the levamisole treated cattle recovered more rapidly becoming significantly heavier than the vaccinates at the end of the trial. The mean group weight gains over the trial period were 89 . 92, 63 . 87, 88 . 67 and 98 . 70 kg in groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively.  相似文献

Recrudescence of bovine herpesvirus-5 in experimentally infected calves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A latent infection of bovine herpesvirus-5 (BHV-5) was established in 4 calves. These calves, plus 2 controls, were given dexamethasone (DM) to reactivate the latent virus. The 4 principal calves developed antibodies to BHV-5 by postinoculation day (PID) 21. Antibody titers increased until PID 42 before decreasing to low levels of PID 75. After the first DM treatment (started on PID 76), an anamnestic antibody response was demonstrated in the 4 principal calves. Calves, 2, 3, and 4 were euthanatized and necropsied at PID 121, and their antibody titers were again decreasing. The virus BHV-5 was not isolated from the tissues by conventional techniques of viral isolation but was isolated from the trigeminal ganglion and spinal cord of calf 3 by explantation techniques. The BHV-5 was isolated, using conventional viral isolation techniques, from a nasal swab sample of calf 1 on PID 91 (15 days after the first DM treatment) and from the thoracic lymph node 6 days after the start of a 2nd DM treatment. Seemingly, BHV-5 may be latently harbored in the nerve tissues or calves and this virus may be reactivated from the upper respiratory tract following subsequent DM treatment.  相似文献

Anti-cryptosporidium antibody levels were measured in serum and faeces of experimentally infected calves. In serum, IgG was detectable six days after infection and remained elevated throughout infection. IgA and IgM in serum showed little change. IgG, IgA and IgM levels all rose in the faeces five or six days after infection and reached a peak between days 8 and 14 after infection and then declined.  相似文献

Protection against challenge with Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae was studied in two groups of calves. The first group was vaccinated orally with an irradiation-attenuated larval vaccine on two occasions, 28 days apart, as recommended by the manufacturer. Each dose contained 1000 larvae. The second group was vaccinated by two subcutaneous injections of vaccine, also 28 days apart. Compared with unvaccinated calves the protection in both groups of vaccinated calves was similar, ie, over 95 per cent reduction in adult worm burdens after an oral challenge of 3000 to 4000 larvae. These results indicate that the passage of irradiated larvae through the intestine and mesenteric lymph nodes is not necessary for the stimulation of a high degree of immunity and opens up the possibility of parenteral vaccination against this and related diseases.  相似文献

The course of an experimental infection of Zebu calves (6-12 months old) with Trypanosoma vivax was studied. Three of eight (38%) infected calves died, two within the first three weeks of infection and the other at 17 weeks. The remaining animals were self-cured. It would appear that self-cure of the infection was related to the ability of the calves to control parasitaemia as well as the severity of anaemia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of difloxacin, a novel fluoroquinolone antibiotic, in calves experimentally infected with Mannheimia haemolytica (formerly Pasteurella haemolytica). ANIMALS: Seventy-two 3-month-old Holstein calves. PROCEDURES: Calves were inoculated with M haemolytica intratracheally; after they developed clinical signs of pneumonic pasteurellosis, they were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 groups (n = 12/group). Calves in each group were treated with 10% difloxacin (2.5 or 5 mg/kg of body weight), 5% difloxacin (2.5 or 5 mg/kg), enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg), or saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (control group), once daily for 5 days, and clinical signs were scored daily. On day 15, calves were euthanatized, and the percentage of diseased lung tissue was calculated. Swab specimens of the lungs were submitted for bacterial culture. RESULTS: Mortality rate and percentage of diseased lung tissue were significantly higher and cure rate and average daily gain were significantly lower for control calves, compared with calves in the treatment groups; however, no significant differences were found among treatment groups. Mannheimia haemolytica was isolated from the lungs of 10 control calves and from at least 2 calves in each of the treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that difloxacin and enrofloxacin were equally effective for treatment of calves with experimentally induced pneumonic pasteurellosis. However, treatment of infected calves with difloxacin or enrofloxacin may not eliminate the organism.  相似文献

This study demonstrated that bovine herpesvirus 5 (BoHV)-5 infected calves can develop encephalitis and remain asymptomatic. Seven calves were infected intranasally and monitored for 30 days. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis was performed from the onset of neurological signs. Multiple sections of brain and the trigeminal ganglion were submitted to histopathology. Virus detection (PCR and isolation) was performed on CSF and tissues. Four calves developed signs of neurologic disease and died. Three calves remained asymptomatic and were euthanized 30 days post-infection. Cerebrospinal fluid mononuclear pleocytosis occurred in symptomatic and asymptomatic calves. BoHV-5 was isolated and viral DNA was detected in multiple areas of the encephalon of all calves. The viral DNA was detected in the CSF of 2 calves showing neurological signs. Histologically, inflammation was noted in the brain of all calves and confirmed that the encephalitis caused by BoHV-5 may be mild and asymptomatic.  相似文献

A study was carried out to determine whether bovid herpesvirus-2 (BHV-2) is able to induce a recurrent infection in experimentally infected calves. Twelve calves infected with the virus were treated with dexamethasone (DMS) beginning 69 days after the infection, ie, several weeks after the animals had recovered from the disease and were negative for BHV-2. The stress induced by DMS treatment failed to reactivate the clinical condition or to induce shedding of BHV-2. However, treatment with DMS reactivated a latent infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus infection in all calves previously inoculated with BHV-2, and also in 2 noninoculated controls. The reactivation of IBR virus occurred without any clinical evidence of the disease, but the virus was isolated from nasal and pharyngeal swabbings and from the organs. A proliferative ganglionitis of the trigeminal ganglion was also observed. Because of the interference by IBR virus, this study did not resolve the question as to whether BHV-2 can induce a recurrent infection.  相似文献
