A 1-year-old Shar Pei presented for recent-onset exophthalmos and right peri-ocular facial swelling. Physical examination revealed the facial mass was of soft-tissue consistency and nonpainful to the dog. Due to inability to retropulse the globe during ophthalmologic examination, it was suspected the mass had impinged into the orbit, resulting in rostral displacement of the globe. Anatomic location suggested the lesion was probably associated with the zygomatic salivary gland. Fine-needle aspiration and subsequent cytological evaluation of fluid extracted from the facial mass was consistent with a diagnosis of zygomatic mucocele. Computed tomography imaging confirmed a single fluid-filled mass was resulting in both the facial distention and the exophthalmos. A modified, lateral orbitotomy surgical approach was selected for excision of the lesion to provide ventral exposure to the orbit, while minimizing trauma to the globe and supporting structures. Histopathology of the excised lesion confirmed a diagnosis of zygomatic mucocele. This case demonstrates utilization of a modified lateral orbitotomy for effective surgical management of a zygomatic mucocele in a dog, with preservation of vision and absence of any significant postoperative complications. 相似文献

A 6‐month‐old intact male Standard Dachshund was referred for evaluation of a soft tissue swelling above the right eye. Examination of the right eye revealed mild lateral deviation of the globe, normal vision, and a dorsonasal soft tissue swelling. Examination of the posterior segment was normal. Dual‐phase computed tomography angiography was consistent with an orbital varix of the angularis oculi and right dorsal external ophthalmic veins with no evidence of arterial involvement. Treatment involved fluoroscopically guided coil embolization of the venous outflow with nine platinum microcoils, followed by sclerotherapy of the varix using 1.5 mL of 3% sodium tetradecyl sulfate foam. Moderate‐to‐marked swelling was noted at the treatment site in the weeks following therapy, which gradually resolved. At final reexamination 3 months post‐therapy, complete sclerosis and resolution of the orbital varix were documented. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case involving the use of a sclerotic agent for successful treatment of a venous malformation in a dog. 相似文献

Presented is the case of an epiglottal fibrosarcoma in a dog. The location of the mass resulted in challenges in the delivery of adequate dose to the tumor, and herein we describe the treatment using an electronic brachytherapy source. The treatment consisted of four Gy fractions, twice daily for a total of 10 fractions (40 Gy total). Visual reevaluation two weeks after treatment supported adequate spatial dose delivery, and the patient was reportedly improved six weeks after treatment. We demonstrate that plesiotherapy using an electronic brachytherapy device is feasible and may be useful in the treatment of carefully selected veterinary tumors. 相似文献

A 23-year-old captive female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) developed an inferiotemporal subconjunctival swelling of the right eye. Surgical excision of the mass was performed and a diagnosis of orbital fat prolapse was confirmed histopathologically. There was no recurrence of orbital fat prolapse at 15 months post operatively. This is the first known case of orbital fat prolapse in the California sea lion. 相似文献

In this report, we provide a case of self-limiting canine acute febrile sterile neutrophilic dermatosis in which the clinical signs featured typical target skin lesions with strong upregulation of T-helper 1 markers and interleukin-8, a potent neutrophil chemoattractant. The effect of down-regulation of Mcl-1 expression by small interfering RNA (siRNA) against the canine Mcl-1 gene on apoptosis was investigated by transfecting CF33 (canine mammary gland tumor cell line) with siRNA using cationic liposomes. The siRNA against canine Mcl-1 increased the rate of apoptotic cells and decreased the numbers of viable cells. Further, sequence-specific down-regulation of Mcl-1 expression was measured by real time-PCR and Western blot analysis. The siRNA directed against the Mcl-1 gene reduced both the mRNA and protein expression in the CF33. Our study suggests the importance of Mcl-1 in canine mammary tumors for inducing apoptosis and reinforces using Mcl-1 as a putative therapeutic target in canine mammary gland tumor. 相似文献

A trial to evaluate the efficacy of a 1% cyfluthrin pour-on formulation (Cylence, Bayer) in reducing the incidence of bovine trypanosomosis was conducted in an area of ca. 2000 km2 of the Eastern Province of Zambia. The trial area was cultivated and carried a cattle population of approximately 11 animals/km2. Cattle were the main host of tsetse. Following the free of charge treatment of the adult cattle at intervals of 7 weeks and at a dosage of 15 ml/100 kg body weight, there was an increase in the average packed cell volume in the herd although the decline in the incidence of trypanosomal infections was more prolonged. The monthly incidence of trypanosomal infections started to decline substantially 8 months after the treatments were initiated. No trypanosomal infections were detected from 10 months after the start of the trial. 相似文献

As the scientific community scrambles to define the ancestry and lineages of the eight segments of new pandemic H1N1 strain, we looked for unique genetic events in this virus''s genome to explain the newly found enhanced virulence and transmissibility among humans. Genome annotations of this virus identified a stop mutation replacing serine at codon 12 (S12Stop) of the PB1-F2 protein, a virulence factor in influenza A viruses. Here, we discuss the significance of this finding and how it may contribute to host specialization, explaining the virtual absence of the H1N1 influenza A virus strain in pig populations. This finding is expected to lead to a better understanding of the transmission and pathogenesis of the 2009 pandemic strain. 相似文献

Fishes harbor a huge resource of phenotypic diversity and are useful for understanding the genetic basis of morphological variation. However, it is difficult to transfer classical genetic mapping to most non‐model species. In this study, we performed a comparative sequence analysis of Fgfr1a to first interpret the evolution of this candidate scale‐loss gene in 15 schizothoracine fishes with various scale phenotypes. While considerable amino acid (AA) substitutions were observed, molecular evolution analysis indicates that the overall coding regions were subject to functional constraint. We also identified extra copies of Fgfr1a in 4 scale‐loss fishes and detected accelerated evolution in one AA substitution specific to these duplicates. We speculate that Fgfr1a had accumulated mutations in the ancestral lineage of scale‐loss schizothoracine fishes before experiencing duplication events, which was further followed by the diversification of species. In silico mutation analysis predicted deleterious effects of the mutations while no disruptive molecular mechanism was detected. Collectively, our results highlight the important role of Fgfr1a gene in the adaptive evolution of schizothoracine fishes during their radiation in the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. 相似文献
