Peripheral plasma concentrations of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2alpha(PGFM), progesterone, prolactin and oestrone were determined in 20 sows for two days before and three weeks after parturition. Groups of four sows each received one of the following five treatments post partum: 30 ml sterile 0.9 per cent saline solution intrauterinely; ovariectomy and 30 ml saline solution intrauterinely; 10 ml Lugol's iodine plus 20 ml saline solution intrauterinely; ovariectomy and 10 ml Lugol's iodine plus 20 ml saline solution intrauterinely, or progesterone (0.5 mg [kg bodyweight]-1 intramuscularly). Saline solution and iodine were administered every 48 hours, starting immediately after parturition, for one week. Ovariectomy was performed within eight hours of delivery. Progesterone was given every third day for 12 days. Piglet weight gains were used as a reflection of milk yield. In all sows, oestrone values were elevated before parturition, but fell by the end of delivery and were very low during lactation. PGFM concentrations rose during the last two days of pregnancy to reach maximal values at the time of delivery. Plasma progesterone levels declined concomitantly with the rise in PGFM values before parturition. Basal values of progesterone were achieved within 24 hours after delivery in control sows receiving saline treatment. Progesterone values fell immediately after ovariectomy in sows receiving saline or iodine treatment but were slightly elevated for one week in sows that received only intrauterine iodine treatment, suggesting that complete regression of corpora lutea is prevented by suppression of post parturient uterine prostaglandin production. Sows injected with progesterone maintained plasma values of about 5 to 15 nmol litre-1.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Plasma prolactin in the sow was studied during pregnancy, lactation and during the post weaning period. The ovarian activity was monitored hy progesterone determinations. In the pregnant sows (2 sows) there was a distinct increase in prolactin values ahout a week before parturition, amounting to maximum levels around parturition. A moderate decrease in prolactin values during the lactation period (3 sows) was observed. After weaning the prolactin values dropped immediately to basal levels. Of the 91 sows studied in the post weaning period 72 sows resumed cyclic ovarian function within normal time (10 days) after weaning while 19 sows had delayed resumption of ovarian activity. The prolactin patterns in sows with prolonged periods of ovarian inactivity were similar to those seen in normal sows. None of our results indicate that post weaning anoestrus is caused by prolonged hyperprolactinaemia after weaning.  相似文献

The object of this investigation was to determine the relationships between clinical findings and hormonal patterns in primiparous sows with different lactation length and litter size during lactation, weaning and to the first oestrus. Seven pairs of primiparous full sib sows were used to determine the effect of lactation length with normal litter size. One sow of each pair was assigned to nurse the piglets for 3 weeks (group A) while the other nusred for 5 weeks (group B). Another 8 primiparous sows (group C) were assigned to nurse 2–4 piglets during a 5-week lactation period. Oestrus detection was performed twice daily and laparoscopic examination every 2 weeks. If the sows did not come in oestrus within 3 weeks after weaning they were slaughtered. Peripheral plasma levels of progesterone, oestradiol-17β and LH were estimated by radioimmunoassays throughout the experimental period.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplemental magnesium (Mg) on the performance of gilts and parity 3 sows and their piglets. Fifty-six gilts (Trial 1) and 56 sows (Trial 2) were assigned to one of 4 treatments according to their mating weight, respectively. The treatments comprised corn-soybean meal based gestation and lactation diets (0.21% magnesium) supplemented with 0, 0.015, 0.03, or 0.045% Mg from mating until weaning. The results showed that magnesium supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the weaning to estrus interval in both gilts and sows. There were significant effects (P < 0.05) of supplemental magnesium on the total number of piglets born, born alive and weaned in sows. In late gestation and lactation, the digestibility of crude fiber (quadratic effects, P < 0.05), and crude protein (P < 0.05), were significantly influenced by magnesium in gilts and sows, respectively. There were differences among the 4 groups in terms of the apparent digestibility of dry matter and crude fiber in sows (P < 0.05) during both early and late gestation. The apparent digestibility of gross energy was increased for sows in late gestation (P < 0.05), and lactation (quadratic effects, P < 0.05). At farrowing and weaning, serum prolactin levels and alkaline phosphate activities linearly increased in sows as the Mg supplementation increased (P < 0.05). Serum Mg of sows at farrowing and serum urea nitrogen of sows at weaning was significantly influenced by Mg supplementation (P < 0.05). The Mg concentration in sow colostrum and the serum of their piglets were increased by supplemental magnesium (P < 0.05). In addition, growth hormone levels were linearly elevated (P < 0.05) in the serum of piglets suckling sows. Our data demonstrated that supplemental magnesium has the potential to improve the reproduction performance of sows, and the suitable supplemental dose ranged from 0.015% to 0.03%.  相似文献

Contents This study presents relationships between peripheral progesterone and Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations during the early luteal phase in sows. Data were derived from three experiments, one with primiparous weaned sows (n = 21) and two with multiparous sows that either ovulated during lactation (n = 23) or after weaning (n = 12). The sows that ovulated during lactation did so due to an intermittent suckling regime (inhibition of suckling for 12 h each day from day 14 of lactation) or due to treatment with PG600. IGF-1 concentrations varied considerably among experiments, and were the lowest in the multiparous sows, regardless of whether they were weaned or lactating: 68 ± 5 and 85 ± 8 ng/ml in the two experiments with multiparous sows vs 188 ± 15 ng/ml in the primiparous sows. Progesterone concentrations were lowest for the lactating sows. Overall, the increase in progesterone during the early luteal phase was strongly correlated with IGF-1 concentrations (r = 0.7). However, the correlation was low in multiparous lactating sows (r = 0.28; p < 0.10) and nonsignificant in multiparous weaned sows (r = 0). The weaned multiparous sows had IGF-1 levels comparable to lactating multiparous sows, but higher progesterone levels. In conclusion, these data show a positive relationship between peripheral IGF-1 and progesterone concentrations in vivo during the early luteal phase. In lactating sows, IGF-1 concentrations are probably a limiting factor for progesterone secretion, although other factors may be involved.  相似文献

Peripheral plasma levels of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF, progesterone, Cortisol, LH and prolactin were studied in 6 primiparous postpartum dairy cows. The cows were followed by hormone measurements and clinical examinations from parturition until pregnancy was established. Blood was collected 3 times per day. The cervix, uterus and ovaries were examined by rectal palpation at 6–10 days intervals. The cows were observed for signs of oestrus twice daily and were additionally teased with a bull to provoke standing heat.Four cows had a normal parturition and dropped their fetal membranes shortly afterwards. (NR group). The remaining 2 retained their fetal membranes for more than 24 h following parturition (RFM group). One out of 6 cows showed standing oestrus at the first ovulation, 4 animals were in oestrus at the second ovulation and all cows showed signs of oestrus at the third ovulation. Although the length of the first luteal phase varied from 9 to 22 days a corpus luteum was in all cases palpated. The secretion of progesterone during the first luteal phase was terminated by a PGF release.A significant difference in 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF levels between the 2 groups was found on days 0–4 (2.39 vs 6.87 nmol/1 at Ρ < 0.06). Postpartum prostaglandin F release as reflected by the level of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF lasted shorter in the NR group than in the RFM group (15–17 vs 21 days). Significant positive correlations between 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF and Cortisol as well as between prolactin and Cortisol during the first 24 days postpartum were noted only in cows having normal parturition. The most pronounced daily prolactin variations occurred during the second luteal phase (NR group), when a significant difference between the times 8.00, 12.00 and 15.00 was recorded (14.7, 31.5 and 19.7 μg/l, respectively). Moreover, a partial negative correlation between log value of prolactin and arithmetical value of LH was found in these cows only during the first luteal phase after parturition.  相似文献

Trials were performed to evaluate the validity of a modified faecal 'progestin' assay for monitoring ovarian activity (Trial 1) and to determine the occurrence of ovulation among individually housed lactating sows by repeated measurements of faecal 'progestins' (Trial 2). In trial 1 faecal and plasma samples were collected from six multiparous sows, from the day after weaning until oestrus occurred in the third oestrous cycle. A progesterone radioimmunoassay was applied to skimmed milk extracts of the faecal samples, and plasma progesterone concentrations were determined with a chemiluminescent assay. In addition, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was performed on faecal extracts and the immunoreactivity in the different fractions was determined. In Trial 2, faecal samples were collected from 88 multiparous sows at weekly intervals from the day of farrowing until 2 weeks after breeding. Samples were subjected to 'progestin' analysis. Trial 1 showed that the excretion patterns of faecal 'progestins' and plasma progesterone were significantly correlated (r = 0.79, p < 0.05) during the oestrous cycles. Parallelism was obtained in the assay, but recovery was low (11.4%). The HPLC analysis revealed one major peak of immunoreactivity in a fraction, which corresponded with progesterone. This finding suggests that intact progesterone was a source for immunoreactivity in the assay. In Trial 2, a 10-fold decrease in mean 'progestin' concentrations was noted from the day of farrowing to day 7 of lactation. The mean 'progestin' values remained low throughout lactation and started to increase 2 weeks after breeding. Large individual variations in luteal phase values were noted. Only 1.1% (one) of the sows ovulated during lactation.  相似文献

Sows mated in summer produce a greater proportion of born-light piglets (<1.1 kg) which contributes to increased carcass fatness in the progeny population. The reasons for the low birth weight of these piglets remain unclear, and there have been few successful mitigation strategies identified. We hypothesized that: 1) the low birth weight of progeny born to sows mated in summer may be associated with weight loss during the previous summer lactation; and 2) increasing early gestation feed allowance for the sows with high lactational weight loss in summer can help weight recovery and improve progeny birth weight. Sows were classified as having either low (av. 1%) or high (av. 7%) lactational weight loss in their summer lactation. All the sows with low lactational weight loss (LLStd) and half of the sows with high lactational weight loss received a standard gestation feeding regime (HLStd) (2.6 kg/d; day 0–30 gestation), whereas the rest of the sows with high lactational weight loss received a compensatory feed allowance (HLComp) (3.5 kg/d; day 0–30 gestation). A comparison of LLStd (n = 75) versus HLStd sows (n = 78) showed that this magnitude of weight loss over summer lactation did not affect the average piglet or litter birth weight, but such results may be influenced by the higher litter size (P = 0.030) observed in LLStd sows. A comparison of HLStd versus HLComp (n = 81) sows showed that the compensatory feeding increased (P = 0.021) weight gain of gestating sows by 6 kg, increased (P = 0.009) average piglet birth weight by 0.12 kg, tended to reduce (P = 0.054) the percentage of born-light piglets from 23.5% to 17.1% but reduced the litter size by 1.4 (P = 0.014). A subgroup of progeny stratified as born-light (0.8–1.1 kg) or -normal (1.3–1.7 kg) from each sow treatment were monitored for growth performance from weaning until 100 kg weight. The growth performance and carcass backfat of progeny were not affected by sow treatments. Born-light progeny had lower feed intake, lower growth rate, higher G:F, and higher carcass backfat than born-normal progeny (all P < 0.05). In summary, compensatory feeding from day 0 to 30 gestation in the sows with high weight loss during summer lactation reduced the percentage of born-light progeny at the cost of a lower litter size, which should improve growth rate and carcass leanness in the progeny population born to sows with high lactational weight loss.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of feeding time on behavior and stress responses in pregnant sows under isocaloric conditions. Twenty-four sows were balanced for parity and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 feeding times. Corn–soybean meal-based diet was fed once at: 0730 (Control, T1), 1130 (T2), and 1530 hours (T3). On average, sows received 7,062 kcal ME/d from 2.20 kg of diet formulated to contain SID Lys/ME of 1.71 g/Mcal. The study was conducted for 28 d (21 d acclimation to the feeding regime and 7 d data collection). Saliva samples were collected every 2 hr for 12 hr in stalls on day 52 of pregnancy. Behavior data were collected 24 hr for 7 d from day 53 of gestating by affixing a remote insights ear tag to each sow. Each sow had 120,960 data points categorized into: “Active,” “Feed,” or “Dormant”. Due to housing constraint, all sows were housed in individual stalls in the same barn presenting a potential limitation of the study. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED and GLIMMIX procedures of SAS 9.4 for cortisol and behavior data, respectively. Sow was the experimental unit. The area under the curve (AUC) is quantitative evaluation of response as threshold varies over all possible values. A 12-hr cortisol total AUC for sows fed once daily at 1130 hours was reduced relative to sow group fed at 1530 hours (P = 0.046) but similar compared with the control sows (P = 0. 323). The control sows (0730 hours) had reduced total (P < 0.001) and feeding (P = 0.001) activity AUCs relative to sows on 1130 hours but did not differ compared with sows on 1530 hours feeding schedules (P > 0.100). Sows on 1130 hours feeding schedule had greater feed anticipatory activity, 24-hr total activity count, total (P < 0.001) and feeding (P < 0.001) activity AUC compared with sows fed daily at 1530 hours. In conclusion, feeding pregnant sows earlier in the morning (0730 hours) appears to minimize sows’ behavior but similar cortisol response. Sows on 1130 hours feeding schedule had greater activities but reduced cortisol concentration, suggesting that elevated sow activity might not necessarily indicate activation of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis.  相似文献

Summary

To determine whether prolactin has luteolytic properties during the first part of the luteal period, hysterectomy was performed in four dogs, in which prolactin had been chronically suppressed by bromocriptine administration. The concentration of progesterone in the peripheral blood decreased upon hysterectomy during the first part of the luteal phase and regained normal values after about seven days. The progesterone patterns during the perisurgical period in these dogs were similar to those patterns observed in dogs hysterectomised without bromocriptine treatment. It is concluded therefore that, in the dog, luteolytic properties can not be attributed to prolactin.  相似文献

Prolactin is required for mammary development in various species but its possible role for mammogenesis in pigs is not known. The goal of the present study was therefore to determine the effect of prolactin inhibition by bromocriptine during the last third of gestation on mammary gland development in gilts. Twenty-eight primigravid gilts were assigned as controls (n = 15) or received 10 mg of bromocriptine orally thrice daily (n = 13) from d 70 to 110 of gestation. Jugular blood samples were collected on d 70 of gestation and every 8 d thereafter and were assayed for prolactin, IGF-I, estradiol, and progesterone. Gilts were slaughtered on d 110 of gestation and fetuses were counted and weighed. One row of mammary glands was used for dissection of parenchymal and extraparenchymal tissues and for determination of DNA, RNA, dry matter, protein, and fat contents. Tissue from the other row was used for measures of prolactin receptor number and affinity. Concentrations of prolactin were drastically reduced throughout the bromocriptine treatment period (P < .001), whereas there was no overall treatment effect on progesterone and IGF-I levels (P > .10). Total weight and extraparenchymal tissue weight of the mammary glands were unaffected by treatment (P > or = .1), but weight of parenchymal tissue, total DNA, and total RNA decreased (P < .01) with bromocriptine treatment. Percentages of fat and dry matter in parenchymal tissue increased with bromocriptine treatment (P < .01) and the percentage of protein decreased (P < .01). Number of prolactin receptors in parenchymal tissue decreased with bromocriptine treatment (P < .001) and receptor affinity increased (P < .001). Average fetal weight was lower in gilts receiving bromocriptine than in control gilts (P = .05), but fetal number did not differ (P > .1). These results clearly demonstrate that prolactin is essential for normal mammary gland development and can affect fetal growth during the last third of gestation in gilts.  相似文献

In 45 primiparous sows, we examined endocrine, ovarian and reproductive responses to split-weaning or five injections per day of 800 ng GnRH from 18 to 21 days of lactation. There was no effect of treatment on absolute or changes in sow weight or backfat depth during lactation. Average piglet growth rates were similar among treatments except that piglets suckling split-weaned sows grew faster (p < 0.05) during days 18–21. On day 18, mean plasma LH concentrations and LH pulse frequency remained relatively stable in conventionally weaned sows but increased (p < 0.01) in response to split-weaning and GnRH. Prior to weaning on day 21, mean plasma LH concentrations remained elevated in GnRH-treated sows but had returned to control levels in split weaned sows. There was no treatment effect on preweaning LH pulse frequency noted on day 21. Weaning was associated with an increase in plasma LH concentrations in all the treatment groups. Mean plasma IGF-I remained relatively constant in conventionally weaned and GnRH sows, decreased in response to split weaning on day 18 (p < 0.02), but were elevated (p < 0.03) in split wean sows on day 21. On the day after weaning, split wean sows had more (p < 0.04) ovarian follicles ≥3 mm than conventionally weaned sows, with GnRH sows being intermediate. The wean-to-oestrus interval was reduced in split-wean sows compared with those conventionally weaned (p < 0.01), with GnRH sows being intermediate. There was no effect of treatment on ovulation rates, numbers of embryos, or embryonic survival rates. These data indicate that split-weaning of litters results in a more rapid return to oestrus after weaning and that this effect is associated with a transient acute increase in circulating gonadotrophins and earlier resumption of ovarian follicular development.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate whether cooled floor pads combined with chilled drinking water could alleviate negative impacts of heat stress on lactating sows. Thirty sows (Landrace × Yorkshire, Parity = 1 to 6) were housed in individual farrowing stalls in two rooms with temperatures being controlled at 29.4°C (0700–1900 hours) and 23.9°C (1900–0700 hours). Sows in one room (Cool), but not in the other room (Control) were provided cooled floor pads (21–22°C) and chilled drinking water (13–15°C). Behavior of sows (15 sows/treatment) was video recorded during farrowing, and days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 after farrowing. Videos were viewed continuously to register the birth time of each piglet, from which total farrowing duration and birth intervals were calculated. The number of drinking bouts and the duration of each drinking bout were registered for each sow through viewing videos continuously for 2 h (1530–1730 hours) each video-recording day. Postures (lying laterally, lying ventrally, sitting, and standing) were recorded by scanning video recordings at 5-min intervals for 24 h each video-recording day, and time budget for each posture was calculated. Rectal temperature and respiration rate were measured for all sows the day before and after farrowing, and then once weekly. Sow and litter performance was recorded. Data were analyzed using the Glimmix procedure of SAS. The cooling treatment did not affect sow behavior or litter performance. Sows in the Cool room had lower rectal temperature (P = 0.03) and lower respiration rate (P < 0.001), consumed more feed (P = 0.03), tended to have reduced weight loss (P = 0.07), and backfat loss (P = 0.07) during lactation than sows in the Control room. As lactation progressed, sows increased drinking frequency (P < 0.001) and time spent lying ventrally (P < 0.0001), standing (P < 0.001), and sitting (P < 0.0001), and decreased time spent lying laterally (P < 0.0001) in both Cool and Control rooms. While cooled floor pads combined with chilled drinking water did not affect sow behavior, they did alleviate heat stress partially, as indicated by decreased rectal temperature, respiration rate, weight, and backfat loss, and increased feed intake in lactating sows.  相似文献

The effect of weaning the 4-5 heaviest piglets in the litter on day 33 of lactation and the remainder 2 days later (fractionated weaning) on plasma levels of prolactin, cortisol, oestradiol-17 beta (E2), progesterone (P4) and LH, as well as on the weaning to oestrus interval in primiparous sows was studied. Twelve crossbred sows were grouped into 6 pairs according to farrowing date and litter size. The litter of 1 sow in each pair (F) was weaned in 2 stages, and the other conventionally weaned at 35 days (C). Blood samples were collected via a permanent jugular vein catheter every 3 h from 9 a m to 9 p m daily throughout the experimental period, and intensively at 15 min intervals for 12 h on the day of first and final weaning and for 6 h on the day after each weaning. All sows were slaughtered following their first post-weaning oestrus and the reproductive organs were macroscopically examined. Lactational oestrus was not observed in any of the sows. Sows from 5 out of 6 pairs showed oestrus within 8 days of weaning and post-mortem examination showed normal ovulation. There was a tendency for the F sows to have a shorter weaning to oestrus interval, as compared with the C sows (5 of 6 pairs, 4.8 days v 5.6 days). The plasma levels of prolactin around weaning were not significantly different between the 2 groups. Within 6 h after final weaning, the prolactin concentrations decreased gradually from 7.6 and 8.7 to 1.6 and 1.7 microgram/l in the control and treatment groups, respectively. The plasma levels of cortisol, showing a diurnal rhythm (with the lowest level at 6 and/or 9 p m), did on no occasion differ between the 2 groups. On the day of final weaning, no diurnal rhythm was observed, with cortisol remaining high at 6 and 9 p m. The plasma levels of E2 and P4 were low until final weaning in both groups. After final weaning the E2 levels rose faster in the F sows than in the C sows, to 44.3 and 34.8 pmol/l, respectively, on day 2 (p less than 0.01). No significant differences in levels of plasma LH and the number of LH pulses were observed between the groups. After final weaning the average and base levels of LH and the number of LH pulse(s) increased significantly.  相似文献

The corticotrophin (ACTH)-adrenal cortical axis has previously been implicated in the onset of cystic ovaries in the sow. In view of the role of the ACTH-adrenal cortical axis in stress, two sows were subjected to an elevated environmental temperature of 32 degrees C for three hours daily during the follicular phase of the estrous cycle. Plasma concentrations of glucocorticosteroids and progesterone fluctuated markedly in one sow that developed cystic ovaries. Concentrations of these hormones did not vary greatly in the other sow that did not develop cystic follicles. Exposure to an environmental temperature of 32 degrees C for three hours or injection of 1 IU/kg bodyweight of ACTH for each of two ovariectomized sows resulted in an elevation in progesterone values to 5-7 ng/ml plasma from basal levels of 1-2 ng/ml and a rise in total glucocorticosteroids from basal levels of 1 or 2 microgram/100 ml plasma to 4-10 microgram/100 ml. Injection of 2 mg/kg bodyweight of progesterone and 4 mg/kg bodyweight of cortisol into the ovariectomized sows was found to approximate these elevations in plasma steroid values. When either progesterone or cortisol was injected daily during the follicular phase into two intact sows in two successive experiments at these dosage levels, similarly elevated plasma steroid concentrations were seen and cystic ovarian follicles resulted. The results suggest that glucocorticosteroids and progesterone of adrenal origin may be involved in the onset of cystic ovaries in the sow.  相似文献

The concentration of total iodine in colostrum and normal milk of cows and sows has been determined using a Technicon Autoanalyzer. In cows as well as in sows a lowering of the level of iodine in milk was observed during the first few days after parturition. At the first sampling within 8 hrs. after parturition the concentration of iodine in colostrum of cows from 2 herds was on average 3.4 and 2.4 μg/100 ml, respectively. Corresponding value for colostrum of the sows was 67 μg/100 ml. Based on informations about the composition of the food and daily food consumption it could be estimated that 0.5–1 and 20–45 % of the daily intake of iodine were secreted per 1 milk or colostrum of cows and sows, respectively. It can be concluded that the mammary gland of the sow has a considerably higher ability to concentrate iodine than that of the cow. Furthermore the concentration mechanism is more efficient immediately after parturition than at later stages of lactation.  相似文献

相似文献
