The objective was to evaluate the effects of perinatal dexamethasone (Dex) treatment on postnatal growth in pigs. Experiment 1: 42 piglets were assigned according to birth weight and sex to receive either Dex (1 mg/kg body weight) or sterile saline (Control; equivalent volume) i.m. within 1h of birth. Body weights were recorded weekly and at sacrifice (day 18). Birth weights (1.43 +/- 0.05 kg) did not differ between treatment groups (P > 0.19). At day 18, Dex pigs were heavier than Control pigs (5.46 +/- 0.24 and 4.45 +/- 0.26 kg, respectively). Serum IGF-1 was 17.3% higher in Dex pigs (P < 0.04) compared to Controls. For serum GH, there was a treatment x sex interaction (P < 0.04) with GH being 51% lower in Dex males compared to Control males, and no differences in females. Experiment 2: 71 pigs were assigned according to birth weight and sex to receive either Dex (2 mg/kg body weight) or sterile saline (Control; equivalent volume) i.m. within 1 h of birth. Body weights were recorded weekly until weaning (day 21) and then every 14th day until market weight. Birth weights (1.53 +/- 0.03 kg) did not differ (P > 0.35) between treatment groups or sexes. Dexamethasone increased growth from birth to market weight by 4.15%. Carcass weights were not different (P > 0.34) between Dex (89.9 +/- 1.17 kg) and Control pigs (88.6 +/- 1.36 kg). Overall, Dex enhanced growth in pigs from birth to market weight with minimal effects on carcass and meat quality.  相似文献

A trial was conducted to determine pre- and postweaning performance of pigs injected with dexamethasone either 1 or 24 h after birth. In Exp. 1, 225 pigs (Triumph4 x PIC Camborough 22) were assigned according to birth weight and sex to three treatments. Treatments included either saline (Control), Dex1 (2 mg/kg BW i.m. injection of dexamethasone within 1 h of birth), or Dex24 (2 mg/kg BW i.m. injection of dexamethasone within 24 h after birth). Birth weights (1.56 +/- 0.06 kg) did not differ among treatments (P > 0.10) or between sexes (P > 0.10). There was a treatment x sex interaction on BW at weaning (15 d; P < 0.05) with Dex1 and Dex24 males 10% heavier than Control males (4.77 and 4.78 vs. 4.34 kg, respectively), and no significant differences in BW among the females (P > 0.05). In Exp. 2, 180 pigs from Exp. 1 were transported to a segregated early weaning nursery facility where each sex was assigned to 10 pens per treatment (60 pens total). Pigs were fed fortified corn-soybean meal diets in a three-phase feeding program. At the end of Exp. 2 (49-d period), there was a treatment x sex interaction (P < 0.01) for BW with Dex1 and Dex24 barrows being on average 8% heavier than the Control barrows (30.1 and 29.8 vs. 27.7 kg, respectively), and no significant difference in BW (P > 0.10) among the gilts. No treatment differences in feed efficiency (gain:feed) were observed during the nursery period (P > 0.10). In Exp. 3, pigs from the nursery were moved to a finishing facility where each sex was assigned to 4 pens per treatment (24 pens total). All pigs were fed fortified corn-soybean meal diets in a four-phase feeding program with sexes fed separately. Real-time ultrasound was used to measure 10th rib backfat depth and longissimus muscle area. At the end of Exp. 3 (83-d period), there was a treatment x sex interaction (P < 0.05) for final BW with Dex1 and Dex24 barrows being on average 5.45 kg heavier than Control barrows (119.6 and 120.7 vs. 114.4 kg, respectively), and no difference (P > 0.05) in BW among the gilts. No treatment differences (P > 0.10) were observed for backfat depth, longissimus muscle area or gain:feed. These studies demonstrate that dexamethasone (2 mg/kg BW) given within 24 h of birth significantly improves both pre- and postweaning performance of barrows with no beneficial effects on gilts.  相似文献

Three commercial trials were conducted to evaluate the use of dexamethasone (Dex) and/ or isoflupredone (Predef) in improving preweaning growth performance of neonatal pigs. The objectives of the commercial trials were threefold: 1) to evaluate Predef in comparison with Dex; 2) to address the sexual dimorphic growth response observed in a previous commercial trial; and 3) to determine whether there is any benefit of providing Dex treatment to pigs being fed supplemental milk. In Exp. 1, 276 pigs (Triumph 4 x PIC Camborough 22) were assigned according to birth weight and sex to three treatments. Treatments included saline (Control), Dex (2 mg/kg BW i.m. injection of Dex), or Predef (2 mg/kg BW i.m. injection of Predef 2X) within 24 h after birth. A treatment effect was observed for BW at weaning (P < 0.001), with pigs injected with Predef being 0.51 kg lighter than Control and Dex-treated pigs. The lower BW of Predef-treated pigs at weaning were a result of a lower ADG (P < 0.001) during the preweaning period compared with Control and Dex pigs. In Exp. 2, 703 pigs (Triumph 4 x PIC Camborough 22) were assigned according to birth weight and sex to three treatments. Treatments included either an i.m. injection of saline (Control), Dexl (1 mg/kg BW of Dex), or Dex2 (2 mg/kg BW of Dex) within 24 h after birth. No treatment effects were observed for BW at weaning (P = 0.24) or ADG (P = 0.19). In Exp. 3, 342 pigs (Genetiporc) were assigned according to birth weight and sex to two treatments. Treatments included either an i.m. injection of saline or Dex (2 mg/kg BW) within 24 h after birth. All pigs were provided supplemental milk from the time of treatment until weaning age. No treatment effects were observed for BW at weaning (P = 0.13) or ADG (P = 0.11). The negative response to Predef was similar to the growth-suppressive effects observed by others using chronic glucocorticoid treatment. In contrast to our previous findings, Dex did not improve preweaning growth performance regardless of dose or supplemental milk.  相似文献

The effects of subtherapeutic antimicrobial supplementation and weaning on serum levels of IGF-I and insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBP)-2, -3 and -4 were determined in crossbred weanling pigs. At weaning, pigs were allotted to a diet containing 21.8% crude protein and 1.15% lysine with or without Aureozol (110 mg/kg of Aureomycin chlortetracycline, 110 mg/kg of sulfathiazole, and 55 mg/kg of penicillin) for 4 wk. Insulin-like growth factor-binding proteins and IGF-I analyses were performed on blood samples that were drawn weekly. Weaning decreased serum IGFBP-3 levels in both control and Aureozol-treated groups on d 6 and d 14 (P < 0.05) relative to preweaning levels. The IGFBP-3 values returned to preweaning levels by d 21. Although the circulating levels of both the 43-kDa and the 39-kDa glycosylation variants of IGFBP-3 were affected by weaning, the level of the 39-kDa IGFBP-3 was affected relatively more than that of the 43-kDa IGFBP-3 (P < 0.05). Compared with circulating IGFBP-3 levels in control pigs, Aureozol-treated pigs had higher circulating IGFBP-3 levels on d 21 (43%, P < 0.05) and d 27 (46%, P < 0.05). In direct contrast to the effect of weaning on serum IGFBP-3 level, serum IGFBP-2 levels increased on d 6 and d 14 after weaning (P < 0.05) and decreased to preweaning levels by d 21. The IGFBP-2 levels continued to decline and were less than preweaning levels by d 27 (P < 0.05). Aureozol treatment had no effect on serum IGFBP-2 levels at any time. Serum levels of nonglycosylated IGFBP-4 were not affected by either weaning or Aureozol supplementation. Weaning decreased circulating IGF-I concentration on d 6 in both control and Aureozol-treated pigs (76 and 73%, respectively, P < 0.05) and on d 14 (62%, P < 0.05) and d 21 (32%, P < 0.05) in control pigs. Aureozol-supplemented pigs had higher serum IGF-I concentrations than control pigs on d 14 (82%, P < 0.05), d 21 (55%, P < 0.05), and d 27 (36%, P < 0.05). The Aureozol-fed pigs had a 14.2% increase in BW gain (P < 0.05) and a 59.6% increase in ADG (P < 0.05) compared with pigs fed the control diet. Both Aureozol-supplementation and weaning cause changes in serum IGFBP levels and IGF-I concentrations that might be involved in regulating rate and efficiency of growth.  相似文献

Administration of exogenous bovine ST (bST) increases growth rate, feed efficiency, and carcass quality in beef cattle. The magnitude of response to bST in beef cattle is variable and related to the age of the animal. Our objective was to determine the response of the somatotropic axis, in particular IGF-I, IGFBP-2, and IGFBP-3, to bST treatment from birth to 1 yr of age. Blood samples were collected before and after a single injection of bST (500 mg) every 50 d from birth to 1 yr of age in male and female Hereford calves. Body weights and serum concentrations of ST, IGF-I, IGFBP-2, and IGFBP-3 were determined. At birth, serum concentrations of ST, IGF-I, and IGFBP-3 increased (P < 0.05) following bST treatment. From 50 to 350 d of age, average concentrations of ST and IGF-I were greater (P < 0.05) in males, whereas IGFBP-2 concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) in females. No gender differences in IGFBP-3 concentrations were observed. Following bST treatment, IGF-I increased (P < 0.05) from 50 to 350 d of age, IGFBP-2 decreased (P < 0.05) from 50 to 200 d of age, and IGFBP-3 increased (P < 0.05) at 250 d of age. At 250 d of age, baseline concentrations of IGFBP-2 decreased (P < 0.05). Due to the positive response of IGFBP-3 and decreased baseline IGFBP-2 at 250 d of age, we conclude that this is an age at which the somatotropic axis is most responsive to exogenous bST, and it therefore may be an appropriate age to begin bST treatment in beef calves to realize the positive influence of bST on BW gain, feed efficiency, and carcass composition.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine whether 1) administration of estradiol-173 (E2) implants to barrows elevates serum concentrations of E2 to levels similar to those of adult boars and subsequently affects the anterior pituitary gland IGF system and 2) administration of E2 to barrows increases serum concentrations of E2, serum and anterior pituitary concentrations of IGF-I, and relative amounts of serum and anterior pituitary IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP), vs boars and unimplanted barrows. In Exp. 1, 20 crossbred barrows (150 +/- 6 d, 103 +/- 8 kg) were administered varying number of E2 implants (0, 2, 3, 4; n = 5/group) on d 1. Blood samples were collected weekly by jugular venipuncture, beginning on d 1. Pigs were killed on d 36 when a blood sample and anterior pituitary were collected. Serum concentrations of E2 were increased (P < 0.05) in pigs with 2,3, and 4 implants vs 0 implants, but no difference (P > 0.05) was detected in serum concentrations of E2 among pigs with 2, 3, and 4 implants. Orthogonal contrasts identified that three or four E2 implants were necessary to increase serum concentrations of E2 to that similar to boars. Serum and anterior pituitary concentrations of IGF-I were increased (P < 0.05) in pigs with 2, 3, and 4 implants vs 0 implants. Relative amounts of anterior pituitary IGFBP-2 and - 5 increased (P < 0.05) in response to administration of E2. In Exp. 2, three treatment groups were randomly allotted by litter; boars (n = 11), E2-implanted barrows (n = 9), and unimplanted barrows (n = 12). A blood sample was taken from all pigs on d 1 and every 14 d thereafter. Implanted pigs received four implants on d 1. Pigs were killed on d 91, when a blood sample and anterior pituitary were collected. Mean serum concentrations of E2 were greater (P < 0.05) in implanted pigs vs boars. Mean serum concentrations of IGF-I (ng/mL) were greater (P < 0.05) in boars (238.7 +/- 6.8) than in implanted barrows (170.2 +/- 8.9) and unimplanted (150.4 +/- 6.7) pigs and tended to be greater (P = 0.08) in implanted vs unimplanted pigs. Mean anterior pituitary concentrations of IGF-I (ng/mg tissue) were greater (P < 0.05) in implanted (773.6 +/- 57.0) pigs than boars (251.9 +/- 51.6) and unimplanted (185.6 +/- 49.4) pigs. Relative amounts of serum IGFBP-2 were greater (P < 0.05) in implanted pigs vs boars. Relative amounts of anterior pituitary IGFBP-2 and -5 were greater (P < 0.05) in boars than in implanted and unimplanted pigs. These data suggest that E2 may influence components of the porcine IGF system in the serum and anterior pituitary. Other gonadal factors present in boars may additionally affect the serum and anterior pituitary IGF system.

Primiparous, spring-calving Brahman cows (BW = 425.0 +/- 13.8 kg, body condition score [BCS] = 5.0 +/- .2 units; SEM) were used to study the effects of thyroid manipulation on weight gain, milk production, and reproduction. Nine cows served as controls. Nine cows were induced to become hypothyroid by daily ingestion of 4 mg/kg BW of 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU). Cows were stratified to treatment 1 d after calving based on season of birth, BW, BCS, calf sex, and calf sire. The treatment period lasted for 84 d and was followed by a 56-d posttreatment period. Cow BW, BCS, and calf weight were recorded twice weekly. Milk production was estimated at 14, 28, 56, 84, 98, 112, and 140 d after calving. Weekly blood samples were obtained for analysis of triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and progesterone (P4). Estrus was monitored twice daily with the aid of a fertile bull equipped with a chin ball marker. Hypothyroidism was effectively induced in all PTU cows during the treatment period. The PTU cows gained more (P = .002) weight (54.6 +/- 7.6 kg) and tended (P = .06) to increase body condition (.61 +/- .17 units) more than control cows (15.7 +/- 7.6 kg; .11 +/- .17 units) during the treatment period. Control calves gained at a faster rate (.85 +/- .04 kg/d; P < .01) than PTU calves (.70 +/- .04 kg/d) during the treatment period. Milk production was lower (P < .05) in PTU cows on d 56 and 84. During posttreatment all trends were reversed, and BW, BCS, calf weight, and milk production were similar between the two groups by d 140. Reproductive performance was not affected by induction of hypothyroidism. In conclusion, induction of hypothyroidism was successful in increasing cow weight and BCS gains and suppressing milk production during the treatment period, but these changes were not successful in improving reproductive performance of primiparous Brahman cows.  相似文献

Eight crossbred sows were selected for the present study (n = 4 vaginal delivery and n = 4 Caesarian section [C-section]). Gestation length did not differ between vaginal delivery and C-section pigs (113.6 +/- .1 and 113.2 +/- .3 d, respectively; P > .16). Blood and tissue samples from 38 pigs were collected at birth. All remaining pigs were sustained with vaginal-delivery sows until 2 wk of age (n = 39). At 2 wk of age, remaining pigs were catheterized for blood sample collection to assess pituitary-adrenal responsiveness to an injection of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH; 10 microg/kg). Blood samples were collected at -30, -15, 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, and 90 min; pigs received CRH or saline at time 0. Pigs were killed and tissue samples were collected immediately following the last blood sample. Serum concentrations of ACTH and cortisol (CS) were measured. Total RNA was isolated from the pituitary and adrenal glands to evaluate gene expression for mRNA specific for pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) and for the ACTH receptor. Centrifuged clot:blood ratio was reduced in the C-section pigs at birth (P < .001) and at 2 wk of age (P < .043), compared with the vaginally delivered pigs. Basal serum concentration of ACTH was greater in C-section than in vaginally delivered pigs at birth (P = .01) but did not differ at 2 wk of age (P = .42). Basal serum concentration of CS was not different at birth (P = .86) but was greater in C-section pigs than in vaginally delivered pigs at 2 wk of age (P < .04). Serum concentration of ACTH was not different (P > .99) between the two groups of pigs following the CRH challenge. However, serum concentration of CS was greater (P < .05) in C-section pigs following the CRH challenge. Expression of ACTH receptor mRNA tended to be greater in C-section pigs at birth (P < .063) and at 2 wk of age (P < .016). There was no difference in POMC mRNA between treatments (P > .73); however, there was a developmental increase (P < .001) from birth to 2 wk of age. These data indicate that the birth process plays an important role in postnatal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in young pigs.  相似文献

Duroc boars from a line previously selected over five generations for 200-d weight and those from a randomly selected control line were mated to Landrace sows either from a line previously selected for increased 70-d weight or from a randomly selected pedigree control line. From these matings, 900 pigs were farrowed to examine the effects of crossing lines of pigs mass selected for weight at two ages on growth rate, survival, and carcass composition. A greater (P less than .01) percentage of pigs farrowed survived birth from control-line sows (.974) than from select-line sows (.914). Of those pigs born alive, a greater (P less than .05) percentage of pigs out of control-line sows survived to 21 d (.893) than out of select-line sows (.829). Pigs sired by select-line boars weighed 2.1 kg heavier (P less than .05) at 70 d than pigs sired by control-line boars. Pigs out of select-line sows weighed .11 kg less (P less than .10) at birth and .3 kg less (P less than .10) at 21 d of age but grew .026 kg/d faster (P less than .10) from 70 d to slaughter, weighed 3.9 kg more at 165 d of age (P less than .05), and reached 100 kg 7.0 d sooner (P less than .05) than pigs out of control-line sows. Carcasses from barrows sired by select-line boars had .29 cm more (P less than .10) fat at the 10th-rib than carcasses from barrows sired by control-line boars. Marbling scores were .31 unit greater (P less than .05) and muscle color scores were .25 unit greater (P less than .10) for carcasses from pigs out of select-line sows than for carcasses from pigs out of control-line sows. Selection for increased 70-d weight decreased age at 100 kg without increasing fat deposition. However, survival rates up to 100 kg were reduced. Mass selection for 200-d weight effectively increased 70-d weight, but fat thickness at 100 kg also increased.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine what effects the birth process would have on development of the somatotrophic axis in neonatal pigs. Eight crossbred sows were selected (n = 4 natural birth and n = 4 Caesarian section) for the present study. Blood and tissue samples from 38 pigs were collected at birth. Twenty pigs were maintained with natural birth sows until sacrificed for blood and tissue collection at 2 wk of age. Gestational age at birth did not differ (P > 0.16) between natural birth and C-section pigs. Average daily gain (ADG) from birth until 2 wk of age was reduced (P < 0.0001) by 39.3% in the C-section pigs as compared to the natural birth pigs. Serum growth hormone (GH) did not differ (P > 0.86) at birth, but was greater (P < 0.024) at 2 wk in C-section pigs. Serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) was greater at birth (P < 0. 0025) and at 2 wk of age (P < 0.035) in the natural birth pigs. Serum concentration of IGF-2 did not differ at birth (P > 0.8) but was greater (P < 0.043) in natural birth pigs at 2 wk of age. Pituitary content of GH mRNA and GH-releasing hormone receptor mRNA did not differ (P > 0.90) between groups regardless of age; however, expression of both mRNAs declined (P < 0.0003) from birth until 2 wk of age. There tended to be a birth type X age interaction (P < 0. 082) for liver IGF-1 mRNA such that C-section pigs had a greater expression at 2 wk of age. Liver IGF-1 mRNA expression increased (P < 0.0001) in both groups from birth to 2 wk of age. Liver expression of GH receptor mRNA was greater in C-section pigs at birth (P < 0. 04) and 2 wk of age (P < 0.03). These data provide evidence that the natural birth process affects postnatal development and/or function of the somatotrophic axis in the neonatal pig.  相似文献

Effects of fiber vs starch energy supplements on endogenous growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) and animal performance from weaning to breeding age were evaluated in 18, 9-mo-old beef heifers. Heifers had ad libitum access to wheat silage plus an average daily supplement intake of 1) 4.08 kg corn-soybean meal (SBM) (high energy-starch, HS), 2) 4.54 kg soyhulls (SH)-SBM (high energy-fiber, HF) or 3) 1.36 kg SH-SBM (low energy-fiber, LE). Serum samples were collected via jugular puncture every 10 d and were analyzed for IGF-1 by RIA. On d 45 and d 176, four heifers per treatment were fasted 18 h and serial blood samples collected via jugular cannulas every 15 min for 6.5 h. Arginine (.5 g/kg BW) was administered intravenously (ARG) to induce release of GH, and four additional samples of blood were collected. Samples were analyzed by RIA for GH. Mean fasted GH (6.4 +/- .4, 8.3 +/- .4 and 13.8 +/- .4 ng/ml for HS, HF and LE, respectively) varied with energy source and level (P less than .01). Mean GH following ARG was higher (P less than .01) in heifers receiving LE (46.2 +/- 4.7) than in those receiving HS and HF (23.5 +/- 4.4 and 24.1 +/- 4.6 ng/ml). Basal GH concentration and peak amplitude were higher (P less than .05) in LE than in HS and HF treatments. Diet did not influence number or frequency of GH peaks.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Crossbred pigs (n = 240) from Pietrain x Large White sires mated to Landrace x Large White dams, with an average age of 100 d (60.5 +/- 2.3 kg of BW), were used to investigate the effects of sex and slaughter weight (SW) on growth performance and on carcass and meat quality characteristics. There were 6 treatments arranged factorially, with 3 classes (intact females, IF; castrated females, CF; and castrated males, CM) and 2 slaughter weights (114 and 122 kg of BW). Each of the 6 combinations of treatments was replicated 4 times, and the experimental unit was a pen with 10 pigs. Castrated males and CF ate more feed, grew faster, and had more carcass backfat depth and fat thickness at the gluteus medius muscle but lower loin yield than IF (P < 0.05). In addition, CF and CM had more intramuscular fat (P < 0.05) and less linoleic acid content in the subcutaneous fat (P < 0.01) than IF. Pigs slaughtered at 122 kg of BW had lower ADG (P < 0.05), decreased G:F (P < 0.05), and more gluteus medius fat than pigs slaughtered at 114 kg of BW (P < 0.05). It was concluded that CF and CM had similar productive performance and meat quality characteristics when slaughtered at the same age, and that castration of females improved ADG and increased weight and fat content of primal cuts with respect to IF. Therefore, castration of females is recommended in pigs destined for the dry-cured industry because of the beneficial effects on quality of the primal cuts.  相似文献

The behavior of stalled females pigs was observed to investigate the relations between behavior and reproductive performance. A commercial farrow-to-finish farm equipped with a computerized recording system with approximately 300 female pig inventories was visited three times to observe three postural behaviors (lying, standing, and sitting) and three stereotypies (vacuum chewing, drinker playing, and bar biting) of stalled females at 15-min intervals for 6 h (25 times including 0 min of one zero-time sampling) after feeding. Relative frequencies (%) of the postural behaviors and the stereotypies for 6 h were expressed as a percentage of a total of 25 time observations. Statistical models for reproductive performance included each behavior, parity, and day of visit. Among 609 pregnant females observed at our three visits, the means in relative frequencies (%) of lying, standing, sitting, vacuum chewing, drinker playing, and bar biting for 6 h were 60.1 +/- 0.91, 32.3 +/- 0.87, 7.60 +/- 0.44, 12.7 +/- 0.65, 0.4 +/- 0.06, and 0.2 +/- 0.50%, respectively. Among 514 farrowed females of the 609 pregnant females, the means of total pigs born, pigs born alive, pigs born dead, birth litter weights, pigs weaned, and adjusted 21-d litter weights were 12.3 +/- 0.13, 11.2 +/- 0.12, 1.1 +/- 0.06, 17.1 +/- 0.18 kg, 10.3 +/- 0.08, and 68.1 +/- 0.40 kg, respectively. Females showing a high relative frequency (> or = 36%) of vacuum chewing during gestation produced fewer (P < 0.05) total pigs born (11.7 +/- 0.38 vs. 12.6 +/- 0.22) than those showing no vacuum chewing. No relationships were found between vacuum chewing and other performance measurements such as pigs born alive, pigs weaned, and adjusted 21-d litter weights. Neither postural behavior nor the other stereotypies were related to reproductive performance. The farrowing rate was not related to any postural behavior and stereotypy in logistic regression mixed models. This study suggests that a subpopulation of females exists on commercial farms that frequently exhibit vacuum chewing and give birth to fewer total pigs. High frequency of vacuum chewing in those females may be indicative of their suboptimal reproductive performance.  相似文献

The effects of piglet birth weight and liquid milk replacer supplementation of piglets during lactation on growth performance to slaughter weight was evaluated in a study carried out with 32 sows (PIC C-22) and their piglets (n = 384; progeny of PIC Line 337 sires). A randomized block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used. Treatments were birth weight (Heavy vs Light) and liquid milk replacer (Supplemented vs Unsupplemented). The study was divided into two periods. At the start of period 1 (birth to weaning), pigs were assigned to either Heavy or Light (1.8 [SD = 0.09] vs 1.3 kg [SD = 0.07] BW, respectively, P < 0.001) litters of 12 pigs and half of the litters were given ad libitum access to supplemental milk replacer from d 3 of lactation to weaning (21 +/- 0.2 d). In period 2 (weaning to 110 kg BW), a total of 308 pigs were randomly selected from within previous treatment and sex subclasses and placed in pens of four pigs. Pigs were given ad libitum access to diets that met or exceeded nutrient requirements. Pigs in heavy litters were heavier at weaning (6.6 vs 5.7 kg BW; SE = 0.14; P < 0.001) and tended to have more pigs weaned (11.4 vs 10.9 pigs/litter; SE = 0.21; P = 0.10). After weaning, pigs in the Heavy litter had greater ADG (851 vs 796 g; SE = 6.7; P < 0.001) and ADFI (1,866 vs 1,783 g; SE = 17.6; P < 0.001), similar gain:feed (0.46 vs 0.45; SE = 0.003; P > 0.05), and required seven fewer days (P < 0.001) to reach slaughter weight compared to pigs in the Light treatment. Feeding supplemental milk replacer during lactation produced heavier pigs at weaning (6.6 vs 5.7 kg BW; SE = 0.14; P < 0.001) and tended to increase the number of pigs weaned (11.4 vs 10.9 pigs/litter; SE = 0.21; P = 0.10) but had no effect (P > 0.05) on growth performance from weaning to slaughter. However, pigs fed milk replacer required three fewer days (P < 0.01) to reach 110 kg BW. Sow feed intake and BW loss during lactation were not affected (P > 0.05) by either birth weight or milk replacer treatment. In conclusion, birth weight has a substantially greater impact on pig growth performance after weaning than increasing nutrient intake during lactation.  相似文献

Thirty barrows (average weight 8.4 kg) were used in a 3-wk experiment to determine the effects of the ingestion of vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol)-contaminated feed on performance and blood chemistry. The barrows were assigned randomly to consume either: 1) a control diet (C), fed ad libitum, 2) a vomitoxin contaminated diet (V; 10.5 ppm), fed ad libitum, or 3) a vomitoxin contaminated pair-fed at levels equal to those consumed by V animals (PF). The V and PF pigs had similar daily gains (.19 vs .20 kg) and feed intakes (.40 and .39 kg), but both of these were lower (P less than .01) than those for the C-fed pigs (.38 kg daily gain and .72 kg feed intake). The V-fed pigs had lower (P less than .05) hematocrit, hemoglobin, serum glucose and serum phosphorus and tended to have lower serum calcium (P less than .06) than C-fed pigs. The V-fed pigs had higher (P less than .05) hemoglobin and tended to have higher (P less than .08) serum phosphorus and lower (P less than .07) serum calcium than PF animals. There was a high total- and free-bilirubin concentration in serum of C- and V-fed pigs in the last sampling period (3-wk), which may be due to fasting and not cholestasis. No differences among treatments were observed in any of the other blood parameters. These results suggest that the differences in animal performance and blood parameters observed between control-and vomitoxin-fed pigs are mainly due to differences in feed intake.  相似文献

The objectives were to determine relative ADG, ADFI, behavior, and endocrine responses in weaned pigs receiving exogenous ghrelin. Twenty-four barrows weaned at 18 d of age (d 0 of the experiment) were catheterized via the jugular vein, weighed, and assigned to either a ghrelin (n = 12) or saline (control; n = 12) infusion group. Initial pig BW did not differ between treatments (7.87+/-0.39 vs. 7.92+/-0.35 kg for ghrelin and control treatments, respectively). Pig BW and feed intakes were measured once daily throughout the experiment. Starting on d 1, the ghrelin pigs were intravenously infused three times daily for 5 d with 2 microg/kg BW of human ghrelin, and the control pigs were similarly infused with saline. Activity observations and blood samples were taken at -15, 0, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 240, and 480 min relative to the first infusion and then three times daily (0800, 1600, and 2400) for 8 d. Weight gain during the 5-d infusion period was greater by the ghrelin than by control pigs (0.57+/-0.10 vs. 0.21+/-0.13 kg, respectively; P < 0.04); however, there was no increase in feed intake. During two behavioral observation periods, more pigs in the ghrelin treatment were observed eating compared with control pigs (P < 0.05). The initial infusion of exogenous ghrelin increased serum ghrelin, GH, insulin, and cortisol concentrations (P < 0.05). Endogenous serum ghrelin increased from d 1 to 8 of the experiment in control animals (P < 0.05). Serum IGF-I initially fell in both treatment groups from d 1 to 2 (P < 0.05) but then increased from d 5 to 8 (P < 0.05). Peripheral concentrations of glucose in the ghrelin pigs were greater on d 2, 3, 7, and 8 than on d 1 (P < or = 0.05). In both treatment groups, peripheral concentrations of leptin increased from d 7 to 8, and cortisol decreased from d 1 to 5 of the experiment. These observations provide evidence that ghrelin may positively influence weight gain and concomitantly increase GH, insulin, and cortisol secretion in weaned pigs.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the nutrition-dependent changes in insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) with growth hormone releasing peptide-2 (D-Ala-D-betaNal-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH(2); GHRP-2 or KP102) treatment in growing Holstein steers. Eight 13 month-old Holstein steers were grouped on two levels of feed intake (high intake (HI); 2.43% body weight or low intake (LI); 1.22%) and each group was daily injected with KP102 (12.5 microg/kg body weight/day) or saline solution into the jugular vein during 6-day period. The concentration of plasma GH showed an increase after an i.v. bolus injection of KP102 on Day 1 and Day 6 in both the LI and HI groups. Plasma IGF-1 began to increase 10 hr following an i.v. bolus injection of KP102, but this was only observed in the HI group (P < 0.05). Also, the plasma IGF-1 in the HI group with daily injections was significantly greater than the LI group from Day 1 of KP102 administration (P < 0.05). It reached maximum values of 125.1 +/- 7.6 ng/ml after Day 2, and returned to pre-injection levels after Day 4, however, no change in plasma IGF-1 was observed in LI with administration of KP102. During 6 days of treatment, plasma 38-43 kDa IGFBP-3 and 24 kDa IGFBP-4 were significantly higher in KP102 treated steers but only in the HI group (P < 0.05). Plasma 34 kDa IGFBP-2 decreased in the HI group and did not show any change following an injection of KP102. In conclusion, the effect of stimulated endogenous GH with KP102 administration increased plasma IGF-1, 38-43 kDa IGFBP-3 and 24 kDa IGFBP-4 levels in the HI group of growing Holstein steers, but not in the LI one. Thus, we strongly believe that the plasma IGF-1 and IGFBPs response to KP102 treatment is modulated by the nutritional status of growing Holstein steers and the increased plasma IGF-1 concentration with KP102 treatment may be regulated by plasma 38-43 kDa IGFBP-3 and 24 kDa IGFBP-4 in Holstein steers.  相似文献

The effects of increasing fetal numbers and their distribution between the left and right uterine horns on calf survival, calf BW at birth and weaning, gestation length, dystocia, and calf sex ratio were evaluated for single (n = 1,587), twin (n = 2,440), and triplet calves (n = 147) born to primiparous and multiparous females in the Twinner population at the US Meat Animal Research Center between 1994 and 2004. Cattle were distributed equally between the spring and fall breeding seasons. Fetal number and distribution in utero were determined by real-time ultrasonography at 40 to 70 d postbreeding. For cows and heifers combined, number of calves per parturition increased from 1.34 in 1994 to 1.56 in 2004. Gestation length was 6.8 d shorter (P < 0.01) for twins compared with singles (277.5 +/- 0.2 vs. 284.3 +/- 0.2 d) and 12.7 d shorter for triplets (271.6 +/- 0.8 d). Survival and BW of individual calves at birth decreased (P < 0.01) but total calf BW per dam increased (P < 0.01) as fetal number increased from single to triplet births. Twins resulting from bilateral twin ovulations had increased (P < 0.01) survival and BW at birth, a longer (P < 0.01) gestation length, and less (P < 0.01) dystocia than twins resulting from unilateral twin ovulations. Calf survival and BW at birth were 97.2 +/- 0.3% and 48.0 +/- 0.1 kg for singles, 92.0 +/- 0.4% and 39.0 +/- 0.2 kg for bilateral twins, 83.2 +/- 0.4% and 36.7 +/- 0.2 kg for unilateral twins, 73.8 +/- 1.4% and 30.6 +/- 0.7 kg for bilateral triplets, and 51.9 +/- 3.2% and 31.7 +/- 1.6 kg for unilateral triplets. Birth weight of single calves increased by 0.51 kg/d for each additional day of gestation length vs. 0.38 kg/d for individual twins. Calf BW at birth increased (P < 0.01) with age of dam from 2 to 4 yr. Twin and triplet births had a greater (P < 0.01) incidence of dystocia than single births. The ratio of male:female calves (0.52:0.48) at birth was not affected by type of birth. Postnatal calf survival was similar for all 3 types of birth. Total progeny BW at weaning for single, twin, and triplet births was 217.7 +/- 2.5, 328.3 +/- 3.2, and 378.4 +/- 15.0 kg, respectively (P < 0.01). Although most bovine females have the uterine capacity to gestate twin calves, decreased survival and BW of unilateral twins and of all triplets indicate that their growth and development may have been compromised by uterine crowding.  相似文献

Thirty-two halothane-negative pigs (109 +/- 0.6 kg of BW) were used to determine the effect of pig age at marketing (and thus growth rate), and magnesium supplementation through drinking water, on pork quality. Two initial groups of 50 pigs that differed by 30 +/- 2 d of age were fed diets to meet or exceed nutrient requirements beginning at 28 kg of BW. Sixteen average, representative pigs were selected from each group to represent older, slow-growing pigs and younger, fast-growing pigs. For the duration of the study, pigs were individually penned, provided 2.7 kg of feed (0.12% Mg) daily, and allowed free access to water. After 7 d of adjustment, pigs were blocked by sex and BW and allotted to 0 or 900 mg of supplemental Mg/L as MgSO4 in drinking water for 2 d before slaughter. All 32 pigs were then transported (110 km) to a commercial abattoir on the same day and slaughtered 2.5 h after arrival. Longissimus and semimembranosus (SM) chops were packaged and stored to simulate display storage for fluid loss and Minolta color determinations at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 d. Two remaining sections of the LM were vacuum-packaged and stored at 4 degrees C for 25 or 50 d. Fast- (younger) and slow- (older) growing pigs differed by 27 +/- 0.3 d of age (153 and 180 +/- 0.3 d; P < 0.001) at similar BW (108 and 110 +/- 0.6 kg of BW; P = 0.13). Supplementation of Mg tended to increase plasma Mg concentration (24.1 vs. 21.8 +/- 0.8 ppm; P = 0.06) but did not affect Mg concentration in LM or SM. Fluid loss of displayed LM or SM, and purge loss, color, and oxidation of vacuum-packaged LM or SM were not affected by age or Mg (P > 0.10). Surface exudate of the SM from older pigs was lower than that of younger pigs (61 vs. 74 +/- 6 mg; P = 0.05) but was not different for the LM (P = 0.22). The LM from older pigs displayed for 4 and 8 d; P < 0.05) were less yellow (lower b*) than younger pigs. The SM from older pigs had lower lightness (L*) initially (47.9 vs. 49.5 +/- 0.4) and after 2 d (49.7 vs. 51.1 +/- 0.4), 6 d (52.1 vs. 53.7 +/- 0.4) and 8 d (54.5 vs. 55.9 +/- 0.4) of display storage. Younger pigs had greater oxidation of the LM than older pigs on d 8 of display (P < 0.01), and Mg decreased oxidation on d 8 within younger pigs (P < 0.05). Pork quality was improved in older pigs as indicated by less exudate, reduced yellowness of the LM, reduced paleness of the SM, and reduced oxidation of the LM. However, Mg supplementation through the water for 2 d did not affect pork quality of either older, slower growing pigs or younger, faster growing pigs.  相似文献
