A method has been developed for the chemical etching of fission tracks in polyfluoro plastics. The formation of fine holes several tens of nanometers in diameter in polyvinylidene fluoride films, bombarded by fission fragments in oxygen and etched in 5-normal sodium hydroxide solution at 85 degrees C, was confirmed by electron microscopy. 相似文献

The distribution of enriched uranium on individual hydroxyapatite crystals after an exchange reaction has been investigated by means of thermal neutron irradiation followed by electron microscopic analysis of fission fragment tracks in plastic support films. One uranyl ion for every two to three surface calcium ions became associated with the mineral but in a nonuniform distribution that strongly favors crystal end regions. 相似文献

Calcite crystals extracted from marrow cavities of bones found in hominid-bearing breccias from Makapansgat and Swartkrans were studied for fossil tracks. The absence of the expected numbers of tracks in these and in calcites from Beds I and II, Olduvai Gorge, combined with the results of laboratory heating experiments, indicates that track annealing has occurred at ambient temperatures and precludes the widespread use of calcite for fission track dating. 相似文献

Tracks attributed to the spontaneous fission of plutonium-244 and of uranium-238 were detected in a large whitlockite crystal in the lunar breccia 14321 from the Fra Mauro formation. For a track-retention age of 3.95 x 10(9) years the number of plutonium tracks relative to the number of uranium tracks is 0.51 +/- 0.15, provided that the rock was not heavily neutron-irradiated 3.95 X 10(9) years ago. 相似文献

We have found evidence, in the form of fissiogenic xenon isotopes, for in situ decay of 244Pu in individual 4.1- to 4.2-billion-year-old zircons from the Jack Hills region of Western Australia. Because of its short half-life, 82 million years, 244Pu was extinct within 600 million years of Earth's formation. Detrital zircons are the only known relics to have survived from this period, and a study of their Pu geochemistry will allow us to date ancient metamorphic events and determine the terrestrial Pu/U ratio for comparison with the solar ratio. 相似文献

Nuclear tracks have been identified in interplanetary dust particles (IDP's) collected from the stratosphere. The presence of tracks unambiguously confirms the extraterrestrial nature of IDP's, and the high track densities (10(10) to 10(11) per square centimeter) suggest an exposure age of approximately 10(4) years within the inner solar system. Tracks also provide an upper temperature limit for the heating of IDP's during atmospheric entry, thereby making it possible to distinguish between pristine and thermally modified micrometeorites. 相似文献

Recoils from alpha-particle decay of naturally occurring radioactive nuclides have energies between 70 and 169 kiloelectron volts. It is shown that these alpha recoils register tracks in mica, observable as etch pits, with an efficiency of about 80 percent. When the recoil energy is degraded to 40 kiloelectron volts the efficiency drops to 50 percent. But, since the decay of each thorium or uranium impurity atom in natural mica is followed by a cascade of six or eight alpha particles, the overall registration efficiency must be very nearly 100 percent. 相似文献

The flapping flight of animals generates an aerodynamic footprint as a time-varying vortex wake in which the rate of momentum change represents the aerodynamic force. We showed that the wakes of a small bat species differ from those of birds in some important respects. In our bats, each wing generated its own vortex loop. Also, at moderate and high flight speeds, the circulation on the outer (hand) wing and the arm wing differed in sign during the upstroke, resulting in negative lift on the hand wing and positive lift on the arm wing. Our interpretations of the unsteady aerodynamic performance and function of membranous-winged, flapping flight should change modeling strategies for the study of equivalent natural and engineered flying devices. 相似文献

Counts of tracks from heavy cosmic-ray nuclei in helmets from Apollo missions 8 and 12 show variations caused by solar modulation of the galactic cosmic-ray flux. An innovative ultrasensitive technique was used for lead isotopic analysis of individual zircons extracted from granite core samples at depths of 960, 2170, 2900, 3930, and 4310 meters. The results show that lead, a relatively mobile element compared to the nuclear waste-related actinides uranium and thorium, has been highly retained at elevated temperatures (105 degrees to 313 degrees C) under conditions relevant to the burial of synthetic rock waste containers in deep granite holes. 相似文献
