To explore the influence of the basic density on collapse-type shrinkage properties and to quantify the relationships of the
main anatomical features with shrinkage and collapse properties, all above-mentioned parameters were determined and analyzed
for three species of collapse-susceptible eucalypts, Eucalyptus urophylla, Eucalyptus grandis, and E. urophylla × E. grandis, planted in South China. The correlation coefficients were also determined and the corresponding regression equations were
established with the anatomical parameters measured by using multiple linear regression. The results indicated that: (1) basic
density was strongly positively linearly related to both unit tangential shrinkage (r = 0.970) and unit radial shrinkage (r = 0.959), weakly positively related to total shrinkage (r = 0.656 and 0.640 for tangential and radial, respectively), and weakly negatively related to residual collapse (r = 0.632 and 0.616 for tangential and radial, respectively). (2) The main factors affecting unit shrinkage were cell wall
proportion (WP), microfibril angle (MFA), and double fiber cell wall thickness (DWT); factors playing an important role in
total shrinkage were WP, ray parenchyma proportion (RP), and MFA, while RP had the highest effect on residual collapse (r = 0.949 and 0.860 for tangential and radial, respectively). (3) All corresponding regression models obtained were very suitable
for the evaluation of relationships between the anatomical parameters and unit shrinkage, total shrinkage, and residual collapse,
as measured using a moisture content of 28% as the fiber saturation point for all specimens. 相似文献

We studied radial and inter-progeny variations in the dimensions of the wood elements and specific gravity of 21 half sib progenies of Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh. The female parents of half sibprogenies were G48 and S7C13 clones. Variance ratio (F) test indicated that inter-progeny variations in the dimensions of wood elements andspecific gravity were significant for all wood traits while variations were significant for radial location for specific gravity only. Hierarchical cluster analysis was done by Squared Euclidean Distance for all of 21 progenies considering six wood traits. 21 progenies were grouped into 4 clusters. Cluster 1 was the largest cluster with 11 progenies, whereas cluster 3 had only one progeny. Selected progenies in clusters 3 (progeny 155,male) and 4 (progeny 108, 196, both female) were highly divergent from the other progenies so they were used in combinations as parents of hybrids to develop new clones with desired characters. Progeny 155 showed higher growth, fiber dimensions, and specific gravity, thus, should be used for the development of new clones. 相似文献

Collapse-type shrinkage is one of highly refractory drying defects in low-medium density plantation-grown eucalypt wood used as solid wood products. Basic density (BD), microfibril angle (MFA), double fibre cell wall thickness (DWT), proportion of ray parenchyma (RP), unit cell wall shrinkage, total shrinkage and residual collapse, which are associated with collapse-type shrinkage characteristics, were investigated by using simple regression method for three species of collapse-susceptible Eucalyptus urophyll, E. grandis and E.urophyllaxE.grandis, planted at Dong-Men Forest Farm in Guangxi autonomous region, China. The results indicated that : unit cell wall shrinkage had a extremely strong positive correlation with BD, moderately strong positive correlation with DWT, and a weakly or moderately negative correlation with RP and MFA; total shrinkage was positively correlated with BD, DWT and RP and negatively related to MFA, but not able to be predicted ideally by any examined factors alone owing to lower R^2 value (R^2≤0.5712); residual collapse was negatively correlated with BD and DWT, linearly positively correlated with MFA, and had strongly positive linear correlation with RP. It is concluded that BD can be used as single factor (R^2≥0.9412) to predicate unit cell wall shrinkage and RP is the relatively sound indicator for predicting residual collapse 相似文献

Variability of the compression properties of cork 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The variability of the compression properties of cork was determined after field sampling covering the main production area in Portugal (10 sites) with samples taken from 20 trees per site at the time of cork stripping. In all cases, cork showed compressive stress–strain curves typical for cellular materials, which are characterized by an approximately “elastic” region up to a 5 % strain, followed by a large plateau up to 70 % strain caused by progressive buckling of cell walls, and a steep stress increase for higher strains corresponding to cell collapse. The radial direction of compression offered higher strength. The Young’s moduli averaged 10.4 and 9.2 MPa for radial and non-radial directions, respectively, spreading from 3.5 to 22.5 MPa for the non-radial and 4.2 to 21.5 MPa for the radial directions. The geographical location of cork production was the major factor of variability. Density, annual growth ring width and chemical composition influenced compression. Cork samples with higher density showed overall larger resistance to compression. The energy absorbed per unit volume to achieve the maximal deformation with full densification of cork is higher when the average annual ring width is smaller. Cork samples with relatively higher suberin content required less stress for deformation. The results encompass the natural variability of cork and are the most extensive to characterize cork. They allow a better insight into the differences that may explain the variation in cork properties and strengthen its use either in the known applications, i.e. as a sealant, or in novel applications. 相似文献

Survival to prescribed fire of plantation-grown Corsican black pine in northern Portugal 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Context
The current fire regime threatens black pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) persistence in the Mediterranean Basin, which recommends larger-scale fuel treatments. Prescribed burning is an option for stand protection but its use in young stands (which are particularly at risk) is hindered by the scarce knowledge on post-fire tree survival.Aims
The objectives were to characterize bark thickness as a fire-resistance trait in P. nigra and to describe how post-fire tree survival responds to tree size and fire effects in a 16-year-old plantation. Methods
Bark thickness was related to diameter at breast height and height in the stem. Metrics describing tree size and stem and crown damage were measured 1?year after prescribed burning in 259 trees. Tree survival was modeled with logistic regression and Classification and Regression Tree analysis. Results
Bark thickness increased linearly with diameter at breast height (dbh) and decreased with height in the stem. Tree survival was primarily a function of crown injury. Stem damage was an influent factor in small trees. Conclusion
Due to thinner bark and lower tolerance to crown damage, young P. nigra trees are less fire-resistant than other Mediterranean pines, e.g., Pinus pinaster. Prescribed fire should not be attempted if dbh <10?cm. Mechanical clearing is the treatment of choice in young stands with a significant shrub layer. 相似文献6.

The effects of mulching with perforated black plastic, in combination with fertilization and induced mycorrhizal symbioses, on the growth of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) were studied in a plantation under intensive, short rotation management. Mulching effects on soil temperature were also examined in order to assess the potential influence of this treatment on temperature-dependent processes in soils affecting tree growth. Mulching significantly increased height and stem diameter growth of both species, attributable largely to improved water relations resulting from diminished soil surface evaporation and elimination of transpirational losses from competing vegetation. Mulching effects on soil temperature were insufficient to contribute substantially to the growth response exhibited by mulched trees. Multiple applications of urea-N promoted enhanced growth in both loblolly pine and yellow-poplar, an effect accentuated by mulching, but the field performance of trees inoculated in the nursery with selected mycorrhizal fungi was poor relative to that of the other treatments investigated. 相似文献

Shoot growth and dieback were compared among progenies of nursery-grown seedlings of Nothofagus obliqua belonging to seven progenies of the same provenance (Quila-Quina, Argentina). First-year shoots consisted of one growth unit (GU) and second-year shoots of one or two GUs. The probability of development of two GU was similar for all progenies. Progenies were different in terms of shoot size, terminal bud abscission, the extent of shoot dieback after shoot extension and the node of origin of the relay shoot on the first shoot. Plants with a second-year shoot consisting of two GUs had a thicker stem and more nodes than those with single-GU shoots. The selection of N. obliqua seed trees based on architectural traits suitable for forestry development at specific sites must contemplate variability among progenies and their probabilities of successful development under different conditions. 相似文献

There has been an increase in wild cherry cultivation over recent decades, revealing a need for improvements in planting material
to be used for the production of high quality timber. To date, trial tests have been carried out mainly on growth and tree
architectural traits, while no investigations have focused on wood properties. The present study investigated the variability
of the growth traits and the physical and mechanical properties of wild cherry wood, both within the tree, within and among
clones and between sites. The aims of the study are to provide useful information on the genetics of wood traits in valuable
hardwoods and to discuss how within-tree variation can affect early selection of genotypes. The results suggest that site
was the most important source of variation in growth traits and in the proportion of heartwood, although differences among
clones were highly significant. The number of sapwood rings was very homogeneous both between sites and among clones. Concerning
the wood traits, most variation was detected within the tree, rather than within or among clones or between sites. Within
tree variability seems to be mainly due to heartwood/sapwood presence. However, since there is a high correlation between
heartwood and sapwood properties, a quite efficient selection made on the basis of sapwood should provide an efficient means
of selecting heartwood traits. 相似文献

Summary This paper deals with the relationships among the physical, anatomical and psychological properties of wood surfaces which play an important role in end-uses. Visual and tactile impressions of wood surfaces are partially governed by the surface profile, and were expressed in terms of roughness values. Sensory warmth of wood surfaces and thermal behavior at the hand/wood interface were measured when the surface was brought into contact with a hand. The warmth is highly correlated to the thermal conductivity of wood and to heat flow rate across the hand/wood interface. Resilience of balls with various rigidities impacting on wood surfaces was investigated in relation to hardness. It is suggested that hardness and resilience are governed by different mechanisms. This paper was presented at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Forest Products Research Society, 1983, Norfolk, Va., USA 相似文献

Seasonal patterns of radial root growth and starch dynamics in plantation-grown Sitka spruce trees of different ages 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Seasonal patterns of radial root growth within 1 m of tree stems were examined in Scottish plantations of Sitka spruce trees aged 9, 15 and 20 years. Results were compared with parallel measurements of shoot extension, radial growth of stems and amounts of starch stored in tissues external to root wood. Youngest trees produced the largest annual increments in root cross-sectional area and numbers of new cells along radial files of tracheids. Irrespective of tree age, new cells were present in roots before bud burst and the onset of radial growth occurred progressively later with increasing distances from the stems. At ages 15 and 20, both stem cross-sectional area and radial root growth up to 0.5 m from the stem base had a minor peak of activity preceding and a major peak following shoot elongation. Further than 0.5 m from the stem, root growth was frequently restricted to the period following shoot extension. Starch storage in the roots reached a maximum in April and May, which was greatest for 9-year-old trees and least for 20-year-old trees. At all ages, radial root growth in early spring occurred concurrently with increased starch storage. Later in the season starch reserves declined rapidly during the period of shoot elongation and root growth occurred whilst reserves were low. At all ages for positions on the root at the base of the stem and 0.25 m from it, starch depletion, at its maximum rate during June, accounted for less than the measured increment of root wood growth at that point. This indicates a substantial translocation of substrates to these zones during growth. At the same time, the reduction in starch concentrations at more distal points from the stem far exceeded that required for local root thickening. 相似文献

Microenvironmental heterogeneity of soil physical properties in 0–20 cm and 20–40 cm soil layers in a broad-leaved Pinus koraiensis forest gap in Xiao Xing’anling Mountains were analyzed by geostatistical method. The results show that the amount of soil
water, saturation water capacity, capillary water capacity and porosity in the top layer were greater than those in the lower
layer, except for bulk density, where the opposite applied. Soil physical properties in the top soil layer had relatively
higher ranges and coefficients of variation. The total and auto correlation spatial heterogeneity of soil physical properties
in the top layer were larger than those in the lower layer. The soil water had a strong anisotropic structure in an easterly
and northerly direction, but porosity shows isotropy in the same directions. With increasing spatial distance, the other three
physical factors exhibited anisotropic structures. The mutual effect between semi-variograms of soil physical properties in
the top layer within the spatial autocorrelation range was not significant. For spatial distribution of physical properties
within different layers, the patches at the middle and lower ranks in the forest gap dominated. Patches at higher rank were
only distributed in the 0–20 cm soil layer and were located north of the forest gap center.

Acetylation of wood was carried out in acetic anhydride only, acetic anhydride/xylene 1:1 (v/v), and acetic anhydride/pyridine 4:1 (v/v) solutions. The antishrink efficiency (ASE), hygroscopic properties, vibrational properties, and bending strength were compared among the three reaction solutions. The ASE was a simple function of weight gain (WG); the equilibrium moisture content at a given WG differed among the reaction solutions. Based on this fact and the results of repeated water soaking and oven-drying tests, it was found that the bulking effect was a major factor, and that decreased hygroscopicity contributes only slightly to the dimensional stabilization by acetylation. The difference in equilibrium moisture content among reaction solutions appears more significant in block samples than wood meal, probably due to the fiber-to-fiber bonds in the former. The tendencies for change in the specific Youngs modulus and the loss tangent differed among reaction solutions, whereas in the static bending test the difference was not marked.Part of this report was represented at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Gifu, April 2002 相似文献

In semiarid ecosystems plant cover plays an important role in the improvement of physical, chemical and biochemical soil properties.
With the aim of studying the influence of different plant species on soil properties, and establishing the relationships between
them, 160 soil samples from under four different plant species (Pinus halepensis, Quercus coccifera, Juniperus oxycedrus and Rosmarinus officinalis) were taken in a forest area of the province of Alicante (SE Spain). The following soil properties were analyzed in all soil
samples: organic carbon content, microbial biomass, soluble organic carbon, aggregate stability, basal respiration, and some
eco-physiological ratios. In addition, the near infrared spectra (NIR) of all soil samples were obtained to verify the similarities
or differences between soil samples under the four species. Some differences in parameters such as organic carbon content
or basal respiration were found mainly between the group of P. halepensis and Q. coccifera with respect to J. oxycedrus and R. officinalis. Despite this, the high organic carbon content found under the four plant species showed an influence on the rest of soil
properties. Moreover, using a discriminant analysis with factorial scores from NIR absorbance data did not result in a good
classification of samples in terms of the species, reflecting some similarities between them. Our results show that the high
contents observed in some parameters under the four species, and the lack of significant differences in most of them, prove
the important role of shrubland in semiarid conditions, it being capable of promoting good soil conditions. 相似文献

We studied the effects of nanoparticles of organo-silane(NOS) compounds in the size range of20–80 nm on physical and mechanical properties in medium density fiberboard, and used NOS at four consumption levels of 0,50,100,and 150 g kg-1dry wood fibers.Density of all treatments was kept constant at 0.67 g cm-3.The water-repellent property of organo-silane significantly reduced water absorption(WA) and thickness swelling but mechanical properties declined due to the reduced proportion of wood-fiber as organo-silane was added to the matrix:the compression ratio of MDF panels and the integrity among wood-fibers both declined, resulting in reduced mechanical properties. We recommend use of 50 g of NOS/kg wood-fiber to improve WA and thickness swelling while retaining acceptable mechanical properties. 相似文献
