We tested the hypothesis that expression of sexual behavior in bulls is affected by the manner in which they are exposed to unrestrained, sexually receptive females. Twelve Angus bulls were used in a crossover design involving two treatments, each tested four times for a total of eight tests for each bull. Sexual interactions were quantified for each of four, 30-min periods under the following treatments: 1) exposure to each of four estrual females in sequence (SEQ); or 2) exposure to four estrual females as a group (GRP). Bulls were blocked into three testing groups, the order of which was stratified across eight test days. The order in which bulls were tested on a particular day had no effect on bulls' expression of mount interactions, or flehmen responses, suggesting that each group of bulls had similar sexual motivation at the beginning of each test. However, the bull testing order x treatment x time interaction influenced mounting interval (P = 0.08), copulation frequency (P <0.05), and copulation success ratio (P <0.05). When bulls were in GRP and tested first on test days, more (P <0.05) copulations were distributed to the first three females encountered compared with either the fourth female (P <0.05) or to each of the other females in SEQ (P <0.05). During later tests, other bulls in GRP were not able to copulate as frequently (P <0.05) with each female, displayed lower (P <0.05) copulation success ratios, and were allowed copulations by fewer (P <0.05) females during each 30-min test. When bulls were in SEQ, they displayed similar numbers of copulations regardless of the order in which they were tested, and had stable mounting intervals; however, copulation success ratio decreased (P <0.05) more rapidly during subsequent tests. Flehmen responses were initially displayed more frequently (P <0.05) when bulls were in GRP, but this effect diminished during subsequent 30-min tests. In conclusion, exposure of bulls to GRP induced greater sexual responsiveness than SEQ; however, this effect was due to enhanced sexual activity during the early stages of sexual encounters and with females that were not recently mated. Interestingly, bulls seem to repeatedly copulate with each individual female until, apparently, female sexual receptivity became attenuated. Thereafter, recently mated females allowed fewer episodes of repeated copulations, but they did not completely cease copulating with novel bulls.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of natural mating stimuli on serum concentrations of LH, testosterone (T) and estradiol-17 beta (E2) in beef bulls. Twenty sexually experienced, yearling beef bulls were bled every 15 min during a 9-h period, 4 h before and 5 h after exposure to estrual females. For exposure, each bull was placed individually in an isolated pen with two restrained estrual heifers for 10 min or until one service was achieved. Timing and number of all behavioral events, including flehmen responses, abortive mounts and services, were recorded for each bull by two independent observers. Of the 20 bulls, 9 bulls mounted and were removed immediately after achieving a service, 8 bulls mounted without achieving a service and 3 bulls exhibited no interest during exposure. Twelve bulls achieved fewer than three and eight bulls achieved three or more flehmen responses during exposure. Postexposure responses in LH, T and E2 were not consistently correlated with number of mounts or presence or absence of a service. However, postexposure LH and T, but not E2, responses were highly correlated with number of flehmen responses achieved (r = .40 to .66; P = .08 to .001). In bulls that achieved three or more flehmen responses, serum LH increased within 30 min after exposure (P = .02) and serum T was increased dramatically within 1 h after exposure (P less than .01), compared with preexposure hormone concentrations, regardless of the number of mounts and regardless of the presence or absence of a service. Natural mating stimuli had no effect on serum E2, and mounting activity alone and mounting that culminated in a service did not necessarily result in increased LH or T in beef bulls. However, number of flehmen responses achieved during exposure to females dramatically influenced postexposure serum LH and T concentrations in beef bulls.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate peripheral concentrations of cortisol (C), growth hormone (GH), and testosterone (T) in bulls and boars during mating and to correlate mating behaviors with endocrine secretion in the presence of an estrous female. In Exp. 1, six sexually inexperienced mature bulls were bled every 15 min for 2 h before and 2 h after a 30-min exposure to a single, restrained, estrous cow; sampling occurred every 5 min during exposure. In Exp. 2, six sexually experienced boars were bled similarly before and after exposure to a sow and every 5 min during a 15-min exposure to a freely moving, estrous sow. Behavioral events recorded during exposure to a female included the following: flehmen responses (bulls only), mounts, penis extensions, intromissions, ejaculations, and time to first mount and first ejaculation. Of the six bulls, four completed at least one service (intromission + ejaculation), and three of six mounted the estrous cow eight or more times. Completion of one or more services resulted in significant elevations in serum C and GH concentrations, but not T concentrations, during the exposure period. Bulls mounting eight or more times also experienced significant elevations in C concentrations during exposure. Three of six boars completed at least one service. Servicing and mounting the sow fewer than five times were both associated with significant elevations in serum C concentrations. Serum concentrations of T were also elevated as a result of exposure to an estrous sow. Collectively, these data support the suggestion that specific events during natural mating activity can alter endocrine secretions of C and GH in bulls and C and T in boars.  相似文献

We investigated the use of an orally active progestin (melengestrol acetate; MGA) to suppress reproductive activity in yearling beef bulls. Twenty-four crossbred bull calves were given a daily dose of 0, 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 mg MGA for 99 d. Pulsatile patterns of LH and concentrations of testosterone and MGA were characterized on d 8, 36, 63, and 92 of the experiment. Numbers of aborted mounts, mounts with intromission, total mounts, and flehmen responses were assessed on d 15, 43, 71, and 99. Plasma concentrations of MGA were proportional to dose of MGA. Melengestrol acetate did not consistently affect mounting behavior in a dose-related manner, but, on d 99, number of total mounts for MGA-treated bulls was lower (P = 0.07) than that for control bulls. On d 15, MGA suppressed (P = 0.07) numbers of flehmen responses in a dose-dependent manner, but this effect was not sustained throughout the experiment. On d 8, concentrations of testosterone in control bulls were higher (P = 0.02) than in MGA-treated bulls, but this effect was not observed at other time periods. Overall, MGA caused slight decreases in mean concentrations of LH (P = 0.09) and LH pulse frequency (P = 0.06). Scrotal circumference was not affected by MGA. None of the behavioral traits was correlated with mean concentrations of LH or LH pulse frequency. Mounting activity was not correlated with testosterone concentrations, but number of flehmen responses was positively correlated with testosterone concentrations (P = 0.01). These results fail to support the hypothesis that progestins impair male sexual behavior or fertility in males.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine how steroid milieus and pregnancy affect sexual behavior. Experiment 1 was arranged as a Latin square with five ovariectomized cows and five steroid milieus: no steroid (N); progesterone (P4); estradiol benzoate (EB); P4 + EB; and P4 followed by EB (P4:EB). Progesterone was administered via pessary (2 g of P4) for 5 d and EB was injected (1 mg i.m.) on the day before a test day. On a test day, cows were exposed for four 30-min periods, twice each with a tied or a loose estrual test cow (prepared using P4:EB). Sexual behaviors recorded were attempted mounts, successful mounts, front mounts, stands, head butts, chin rests, and vulvar sniffs. Cows exhibited more (P less than .05) sexual behavior during periods with the loose estrual test cow than with the tied estrual test cow. Cows receiving P4 alone ranked lowest among treatments for each behavior, whereas cows receiving EB or P4:EB ranked highest or second-highest. Progesterone prevented stands in cows given P4 + EB, but these cows displayed mounting behaviors similar to those of cows given EB and P4:EB. Cows given P4 + EB were similar to those given N for most behaviors. In Exp. 2, 118 intact, lactating cows were observed in groups of four or five for mounting of estrual test cows during 24, 30-min observation periods on 8 d over 2 yr. The design was an incomplete block with physiological state, parity, estradiol, progesterone, and a calculated estrogen:progesterone ratio included in the model. Each block included one or two cows at 23 +/- .8 d after insemination, divided retrospectively into one pregnant and two non-pregnant groups (low [less than 1 ng/mL] vs high progesterone), and other cows at 89 +/- 1.0, 152 +/- 1.2, and 234 +/- 1.7 d of gestation (six physiological groups). Most cows were observed once, but 27 cows were included twice during 2 yr. Only 60% of the 118 cows made attempted or successful mounts even though estrual test cows were always receptive. Physiological state was not associated with amount of mounting because very active (greater than or equal to five attempts) and inactive cows were represented in all physiological groups. The estrogen:progesterone ratio on test day accounted for small, but significant, variation in mounting behavior. A study was conducted to determine the effect of serving capacity (SC) on sexual behavior of yearling bulls during single- and double-sire pasture matings. Approximately 60 crossbred virgin bulls were subjected to 3 SC tests, and 20 bulls were selected that were similar in age, BW, testes size and semen quality. Ten bulls were high SC (greater than or equal to 3 services/test) and 10 bulls were low SC (less than or equal to 2 services/test). Competitive order among the 20 bulls also was determined. Single-sire tests were conducted with 15 intact estrual heifers and 1 bull in a pasture for 6 h. Double-sire tests were conducted with 30 estrus-induced, ovariectomized heifers and 1 high SC and 1 low SC bull of approximately equal competitive order for 6 h. Bulls in double-sire tests had more (P less than .007) mounts than those in single-sire tests. High SC bulls in double-sire tests served more heifers (P less than .04) and had more services (P less than .04) than any other SC group and test type. There was no difference (P greater than .10) in the number of mounts or services between high and low SC bulls in single-sire tests. High SC bulls had a greater (P less than .002) percentage of mounts that culminated in a service that did low SC bulls. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the interrelationships of the various sexual and aggressive behaviors exhibited by Hereford bulls in sexual performance (serving capacity) tests and to determine the extent to which these interrelationships change with age (maturity). Correlation matrices were constructed for the frequencies of sexual and aggressive behaviors exhibited by two groups of 13 and 14 bulls, respectively, during 120-min tests with females when the bulls were 12, 18, and 24 mo of age. The frequencies of selected sexual behaviors recorded during individual tests at 18, 21, and 24 mo were factor-analyzed using a principle components analysis. Also, a comparison was made of the length of the refractory periods following various sexual behaviors at 12 and 24 mo of age. Bulls varied greatly in the way they responded to sexual stimuli. Few sexual behaviors were intercorrelated and the factor analysis of selected sexual behaviors was inconclusive. Frequencies of aggressive behaviors were more highly correlated. Age (maturation) did not affect the interrelationship of the sexual behaviors recorded. Aggressive behavior variables were more highly correlated at 12 mo than at 18 or 24 mo of age. The average length of the refractory period following ejaculation was longer (112 s; P less than .05) than the refractory period following mounts without ejaculation (50 s), and the latter had a longer (P less than .05) refractory period than mount attempts, mount intentions and head throws (26 to 38 s).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Eighteen sexually experienced Hereford bulls were exposed individually to a pair of restrained hormone-induced estrous and nonestrous females to determine mating preferences in the context of serving capacity testing. No evidence was obtained to support the hypothesis that restrained estrous females are more attractive to bulls than restrained nonestrous females. Estrous and nonestrous females received similar numbers of mount intentions, mount attempts, mounts without ejaculations and ejaculations during the 20-min tests. Time spent with estrous and nonestrous females and latencies to leave initially chosen estrous and nonestrous females to investigate the alternative female also were similar. Bulls interacted more with the females that they contacted first, regardless of estrous condition. A female position effect was noted. We conclude that restrained nonestrous females are as effective as restrained estrous females in assessing the serving capacity of Hereford bulls.  相似文献

The moxidectin (MXD) is an antiparasitic drug used in domestic animals. The mechanism of action, in mammals, involves GABA, a neurotransmitter with an important role in the sexual behavior control. Presently, the effects of 0.2 mg/kg therapeutic dose were studied on sexual behavior, sexual motivation, penile erection and central GABA levels. Sexual behavior results showed increased latencies to the first mount and intromission as well as in inter-intromission interval; a reduction in total mounts was detected on the drug post-treatment. No difference was observed between sexual motivation of control and experimental animals. MXD treatment reduced penile erection and hypothalamic GABA levels. The results suggest that MXD reduced sexual behavior and penile erection by an action on the hypothalamic GABA system. Probably, the lack of effects in the motivational test and the increased mount and intromission latencies as well as decreased total mounts could be explained as a consequence of reduced male rat erection process.  相似文献

The objective of this investigation was to determine the extent to which the sexual performance of adult bulls (18 to 24 mo of age) can be predicted by prepuberal sexual behaviors. Tests were administered to 121 polled Hereford bulls to determine whether adult sexual performance (especially serving capacity or ejaculation rate) was related to 1) whether or not the subjects mounted estrous females at 6 mo of age, 2) the age at which the bulls attained their first ejaculation, 3) the frequency of sexual behaviors exhibited in heterosexual interactions and 4) the frequency of male-male mounting exhibited in all-male groups. None of the above measures reliably predicted adult serving capacity. Prepuberal interest in mounting other males and estrous females and the age at which ejaculatory competence was attained bore little relationship to serving capacity at 18 to 24 mo. Individual differences in rate of ejaculation were consistent from one age to another only after the bulls had reached 18 mo. We concluded that the sexual behaviors of prepuberal beef bulls were of limited usefulness in predicting adult sexual performance.  相似文献

Eighty crossbred, virgin, yearling beef bulls were subjected to three serving capacity (SC) tests. Ten low SC (LSC) and 10 high SC (HSC) bulls similar in weight (avg wt = 452 kg), testicular size and seminal traits but differing in average services were selected. Objectives were to evaluate the mating behavior and fertility of LSC and HSC bulls at pasture when exposed to an average and a heavy mating load and to determine the effect of sexual activity on body weight and testicular characteristics. One LSC and one HSC bull per block were exposed single-sire to 25 naturally cyclic (N) cows for 3 d and to 9 estrus-synchronized (S) cows for 1 d in a randomized complete block design consisting of 10, 4-d blocks. Bulls were fitted with pedometers to record distance travelled. Behavioral data were collected by periodic visual observation. During the N cow treatment, LSC bulls had fewer (P less than .05) services per cow, total services and a higher mount to service ratio than HSC bulls. During the S cow treatment, LSC bulls showed increased sexual activity, though they achieved fewer (P less than .09) services per cow. Pregnancy rates for LSC and HSC bulls did not differ (P greater than .20) and across SC groups averaged 53.6% for N cows and 31.9% for S cows. Distance travelled also was similar (P greater than .20) between SC groups for both treatments. Sexual activity during pasture exposure had no effect (P greater than .20) on testicular characteristics but resulted in an average decline in body weight of 25.7 kg across SC groups during the 4-d period. Post-exposure SC tests found that LSC bulls had increased (P less than .05) services, decreased mounts and mount to service ratio compared to pre-exposure measurements, but LSC were still lower (P = .06) than HSC bulls for average services. These results suggest that LSC virgin, yearling bulls should be offered sexual experience and retested before their inherent SC can be determined.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of short-term (6 wk) individual housing on the sexual interest (libido) of sexually experienced bulls. Twenty-two Hereford bulls reared with both males and females (BMF) or in all-male groups (BM) and approximately 21 mo of age were given free access for 40 min to five restrained females in hormonally-induced estrus and restricted access for 30 min to a single enclosed estrous female on two separate occasions. Free-access tests were administered to bulls in groups of five or six individuals, whereas bulls were tested individually in restricted-access tests. After testing, half the animals were housed individually (physically isolated from conspecifics) and half remained in group housing for a 6-wk period. Libido tests were administered again at the end of the treatment period and 2 wk after reinstatement of group housing for the experimental subjects. Individually housed bulls exhibited fewer mounts (P less than .001) and spent less time with females (P less than .01) in tests administered during physical isolation than before or after treatment. Individual housing did not affect BMF and BM bulls differentially. In conclusion, short-term individual housing temporarily reduced libido of beef bulls.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that mounting and chemoinvestigatory behaviors are testosterone-dependent in bulls. Eighteen bulls were divided into three treatment groups: intact (I), castrated (C) and castrated+testosterone (T). Sexual behaviors of all bulls were tested with an unrestrained receptive female 1 week prior to and weekly for 4 weeks after castration. Mounts with intromissions, aborted mounts and flehmen responses were quantified for each test period. In addition, patterns of LH and testosterone secretion were assessed at these times. Neither mounts with intromissions nor aborted mounts were affected by treatment. In contrast, numbers of flehmen responses were lower in C bulls than in the other groups following castration. Before castration, concentrations of LH were not different among groups and LH pulse frequency was approximately one pulse per hour. Castration resulted in a 2-fold increase in mean concentrations of LH and a 6-fold increase in LH pulse frequency. Neither mean concentration of LH nor LH pulse frequency changed in I or T bulls. The data fail to support the hypothesis that mounting behavior is T-dependent, but supports the hypothesis that this steroid hormone regulates flehmen behavior in sexually experienced bulls.  相似文献

Development of sexual and aggressive behaviors in Hereford bulls   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The purpose of this study was to describe maturation-related changes in the sexual and aggressive behaviors of Hereford bulls. Two groups of 13 and 14 bulls, respectively, were tested for sexual and aggressive behaviors every 3 mo from 3 to 24 mo of age. At 3 and 6 mo of age, the bulls were exposed, as groups, to two estrous females, whereas at 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24 mo these bulls were tested under each of the following several treatment conditions: 1) individual tests (single males were exposed to single females), 2) small-group tests (three or four bulls:three females), 3) large-group tests (13 or 14 bulls:3 females), and 4) male-only tests (13 or 14 bulls were placed in the test arena in the absence of females). Most bulls consistently mounted females by 9 mo of age. Twenty-one of the 27 bulls (78%) attained their first ejaculation at either 12 or 15 mo of age. The frequency of mounting without ejaculation was greatest in large-group tests at 12 mo of age, and ejaculation frequency peaked at 18 mo. The incidence of male-male mounting in large-group tests (with females) did not appreciably change from 3 to 24 mo, whereas male-male mounting in male-only tests was greatest at 9 and 24 mo. We conclude that sexual performance data obtained in serving capacity tests administered to yearling bulls before 18 mo of age may underestimate the mating potential of certain individuals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the sexual performance of rams that differed in age (maturation) and sexual experience. Twenty-four ram lambs (8 mo of age) and 21 rams (20 mo of age) were individually exposed to four females in hormonally induced estrus for 30 min on five occasions, 7 d apart. Half (12) the ram lambs and nine of the yearlings were sexually naive at the start of testing (had been denied access to females since weaning); the remaining males were sexually experienced. The sexual performance of the virgin rams was poorer during the initial exposure to females than in subsequent tests, whereas the sexual behavior of the sexually experienced males did not change over the days of testing. Sexually naive ram lambs and rams exhibited an improvement in sexual performance between Tests 1 and 2; during Test 3 to 5 the sexual performance (ejaculations per test) of sexually naive and experienced rams was similar. The only effects of age (maturation) on sexual performance during the last three test days were a higher frequency of mounts without ejaculation plus mount attempts (P less than .03) and a greater number of mount interactions per ejaculation (P less than .02) by ram lambs. In conclusion, one or two relatively brief exposures to estrous females can bring the sexual performance of virgin rams up to levels comparable to that of experienced males. Also, ram lambs in good condition exhibit acceptable levels of sexual performance.  相似文献

Postweaning growth, sexual development, libido, and carcass data were collected from two consecutive calf crops using 31 Brahman x Angus (B x A), 41 Senepol x Angus (S x A), and 38 Tuli x Angus (T x A) F1 bulls. Following weaning (by mid-September) and preconditioning, at the start of the study (late September) bulls were fed concentrate (three times each week at a rate equivalent to 4.5 kg/d) on bahiagrass pasture for approximately 250 d. At the start of the study and at 28-d intervals, BW, hip height, and scrotal circumference (SC) were measured. Concurrently at 28-d intervals, when the SC of a bull was > or = 23 cm, semen collection was attempted using electroejaculation. Ejaculates were evaluated for presence of first spermatozoa (FS), 50 x 10(6) sperm with at least 10% motility (PU), and 500 x 10(6) sperm with at least 50% motility (PP). After all bulls reached PP they were subjected to two libido tests. Carcass data were collected on all bulls (n = 110) and Warner-Bratzler shear (WBS) force values were assessed on a subset (n = 80). For both years, B x A bulls were heavier (P < 0.05) and taller (P < 0.05) than S x A and T x A bulls at the start and end of the study. However, breed type did not influence (P > 0.10) gain in BW or hip height during the study. Scrotal circumference of T x A bulls was larger (P < 0.05) than that of B x A or S x A bulls at the start of the study, but there was no effect (P > 0.10) of breed type by the end of the study. At PU and PP, B x A bulls were older (P < 0.05), heavier (P < 0.05), and taller (P < 0.05) and had larger (P < 0.05) SC than S x A and T x A bulls. Tuli x Angus bulls were younger (P < 0.05) than S x A bulls at PU and PP but had similar SC. Libido scores tended (P < 0.10) to be lower for B x A than for S x A and T x A bulls. Breed type affected (P < 0.05) carcass traits; B x A bulls had the heaviest (P < 0.05) hot carcass weight, greatest (P < 0.05) dressing percentage, larger (P < 0.05) longissimus muscle area than S x A bulls, and higher (P < 0.05) USDA yield grade than T x A bulls but greatest (P < 0.05) WBS force values. Breed type did not affect (P > 0.10) USDA quality grade. In conclusion, tropically adapted F1 bulls produced from Senepol (Bos taurus) and Tuli (Sanga) sires bred to Angus cows in Florida had lighter BW, shorter hip heights, and smaller carcasses than those from Brahman sires but reached puberty earlier and had higher libido scores and lower WBS force values.  相似文献

Behaviour was measured in reproductively experienced rams from three crossbred strains and two pure breeds (Suffolk and Finnish Landrace) in an attempt to develop a method for rapid screening of sexually aggressive rams and to measure breed differences in sexual activity. A set sequential pattern of activity need not occur in sexually experienced rams, and components of their sexual behaviour may be influenced by the estrual status of the ewe. The data indicate that the number of attempted mounts is an acceptable selection tool, with a mount following a short period of investigation most likely to be followed by coitus. Two sequential ten minute periods are sufficient for rapid screening of rams for short-term sexual activity levels.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to determine the relative importance of olfaction and visual observation of heifer mounting behavior to the detection of estrus by bulls. An observation pen was designed to allow the evaluation of the preference of five sexually experienced bulls under three sets of stimuli. The observation pen was 4 m x 17 m with a smaller enclosure (2 m x 4 m) at each end that housed either a pair of heifers in diestrus (D), a pair of heifers in estrus that were allowed to mount one another (EM), or a pair of heifers in estrus that were separated by an aluminum panel to prevent mounting behavior (E). The preference of bulls was determined between EM heifers compared to D heifers, EM heifers compared to E heifers, and E heifers compared to D heifers. Each bull was individually allowed 5 min inside the observation pen to demonstrate its preference. Preference was defined as the total time that bulls spent within 2.5 m of either pair of heifers. Each bull was subjected to 10 observation periods of each set of stimuli during a 4-mo period. Bulls preferred to be near EM heifers compared with either E or D heifers (P less than .05). However, the bulls demonstrated no preference (P greater than .05) for E heifers compared with D heifers. These data indicate that when physical contact is denied, bulls use visual observation of female homosexual behavior as the primary indicator of estrus and that olfaction alone provides insufficient stimuli for bulls to indicate preference toward heifers in estrus compared with heifers in diestrus.  相似文献

The effect of management of the female stimulus during semen collection and its association with libido re-establishment and the semen characteristics of sexually mature goats was evaluated. Eight 2-yr-old bucks were individually subjected to 12 weekly trials in which one of the following three treatments was applied alternately. In treatment one, each male performed two ejaculations on an estrus-induced, restrained doe and semen was collected with an artificial vagina (AV). In treatment two, males were collected as in the former treatment, but a different doe served as the stimulus female for the second ejaculation. In treatment three, two restrained does were present while collecting each buck, allowing males to choose which female to mount and serve in each of the two collections. Number of mounts before first ejaculation and reaction times (period from introduction of the ram to the test arena to his first ejaculation) were similar among treatments (P > 0.05). A significant (P < 0.05) decrease was found for number of mounts performed before achieving the second ejaculation and for latency between ejaculations in the third treatment. No differences (P > 0.05) were found for semen volume (0.8+/-0.03, 1.0+/-0.03, and 0.9+/-0.02 mL) or sperm concentration (4.4+/-0.15, 4.6+/-0.13, and 4.4+/-0.86 spermatozoa/mL) among the three treatments or between the first and second collection. However, a trend to decrease volume and concentration was observed. It was concluded that the simultaneous presence of two females while bucks are collected reduced the number of mounts performed before the second ejaculation and the latency between ejaculations.  相似文献

The purpose of the following study was to determine the effects of group size and the male-to-female ratio on the sexual and aggressive behaviors of bulls in the context of serving capacity tests. Tests were administered to two groups of 13 and 14 polled Hereford bulls, respectively, under four test conditions in which the number of bulls and the ratio of males to females was varied. The test conditions were as follows: 1) individual tests (single males were exposed to single females), 2) small-group tests (three or four bulls:three females), 3) large-group tests (13 or 14 bulls:3 females), and 4) male-only test (13 or 14 bulls were placed in the test area in the absence of females). In addition, the sexual performance of 44 Hereford and 12 Angus bulls was compared when competing (small-group tests) vs not competing (individual tests) for females. Ejaculation rate (serving capacity) was similar in individual and small-group tests in which a male-to-female ratio of approximately 1:1 was maintained. Increasing the male-to-female ratio to approximately 4.5:1 enhanced levels of aggression and reduced overall sexual performance. Angus bulls were more aggressive than their Hereford counterparts when competing for females and exhibited lower (P less than .05) ejaculation rates in small-group tests than when evaluated individually. We concluded that the sexual performance of polled Hereford bulls can be reliably evaluated when tested in small groups as long as a 1:1 male-to-female ratio is approximated.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
