Alcaligenes faecalis rhinotracheitis in Manitoba turkeys 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An outbreak of alcaligenes rhinotracheitis occurred on one premises housing five turkey flocks totaling 25,000 poults. Prominent findings were severe respiratory difficulty resulting from excess mucus in the nasopharynx, lachrimation, and tracheal collapse. Sinus and tracheal cultures consistently yielded Alcaligenes faecalis. An adenovirus was isolated and four flocks became positive for CELO virus by agar-gel-precipitin (AGP) tests. Mortality by flocks ranged from 4% to 48%. Treatment was unsuccessful and appeared to increase the mortality rate. The course of the disease was about 6 weeks, and recovered turkeys were marketed 1 week later than the usual date. 相似文献

Observations on Alcaligenes faecalis infection in turkeys 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Experiments were initiated to study the pathogenicity of 5 Alcaligenes faecalis isolates in specific-pathogen-free poults. The isolates were recovered from commercial flocks suffering from a respiratory disease. There were no differences between cultural or biochemical characteristics of the isolates, but differences in antibiotic sensitivity were detected. All 5 isolates were capable of initiating a respiratory disease in poults similar to that seen in the early stages of turkey coryza. The infection, clinical signs, and lesions were limited to the upper part of the respiratory tract, but there were substantial differences in the severity of disease initiated by different isolates. There were also differences in the persistence of infection in the host. Secondary infections in the tracheas and sinuses were higher in poults infected with A. faecalis. The disease observed in the experimentally infected birds was milder than in 4 naturally infected flocks that also had complicating Escherichia coli infections. There was no evidence of infection with infectious bursal disease virus in 4 naturally occurring outbreaks in Ohio. It is proposed that the term turkey coryza be used to describe the disease initiated by A. faecalis.

Hybrids produced from crossing Cornell K-strain white leghorn chickens and Line II Japanese quails were studied for susceptibility to infection with infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). Quail-chicken hybrids were infected successfully following inoculation with IBDV at 14, 21, or 52 days of age. In most cases, precipitating antibodies were detected in serum by 10 days postinoculation (PI). Although no clinical signs or gross lesions were evident in the bursa of Fabricius of hybrids, histologic changes in the bursa were detected upon microscopic examination using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Chickens were successfully infected also; they had gross and microscopic lesions in the bursa and produced precipitating antibodies. In addition, staining of bursal sections with low concentrations of peroxidase-conjugated concanavalin A revealed a rearrangement of a leukocyte cell type (probably macrophages) in infected chickens and hybrids. Japanese quails were refractory to infection; they showed no bursal changes and did not form precipitating antibodies. 相似文献

Two infectious bursal disease viruses (IBDVs)--a cell-culture-adapted chicken strain designated Edgar strain and a recent isolate from turkeys in Missouri--were used to assay sera from 10 Iowa turkey flocks collected between 1 and 16 weeks of age. The two viruses were serologically distinct in cross-neutralization tests. For all flocks, a similar serologic pattern was found consisting of (1) low maternal antibody titers to turkey IBDV and occasionally to Edgar strain IBDV between 1 and 3 weeks of age, (2) a period of very low or no detectable titers between 3 and 7 weeks of age, and (3) sharply rising high titers to turkey IBDV with low titers to Edgar IBDV beginning at 5 to 8 weeks of age. These findings indicate that infection with IBDV of the serotype represented in this study by the turkey isolate is common in Iowa turkey flocks, whereas infection with IBDV represented by Edgar strain is uncommon. Infection occurred between 3 and 7 weeks of age during the late brooding period or after birds had been moved to an intermediate growing facility. All flocks developed complicated respiratory disease with excessive mortality caused by Escherichia coli septicemia, typically between 3 and 6 weeks of age. Although there was a temporal relationship between IBDV infection and respiratory disease, the possible role of IBDV in the process is unknown. 相似文献

An infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) was isolated from 39-to-43-day-old commercial leghorn pullets suspected of having infectious bursal disease (IBD). These chickens had been vaccinated with a commercial live IBDV vaccine at 28 and 35 days of age. An isolate designated IN was recovered using specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chickens and the BGM-70 established cell line. Experimental studies using SPF chickens vaccinated with either inactivated vaccines made from the vaccine strain used in the problem flock or a standard-type vaccine indicated no protection against the IN isolate. However, two variants and another standard-type vaccine induced protection against the IN isolate. Cross-neutralization tests indicated that the IN isolate differed antigenically from commercial vaccine strains and was related to the variant IBDV strains recently isolated from broilers. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a variant IBDV recovered from commercial layer chickens in the United States. 相似文献

The serum levels of corticosterone, total calcium, inorganic phosphorus, protein, sodium, and potassium were determined for turkey poults from 1 to 42 days of age. Corticosterone levels were higher at days 10, 14, 21, and 28 in Alcaligenes faecalis-infected turkeys than in uninfected poults. The corticosterone responses in this study indicate that A. faecalis infection stimulates adrenal cortical function even in the very young poult, which ordinarily does not show adrenal cortical responsiveness to various environmental and physical stressors. No differences were observed between infected and uninfected turkey poults in other serum chemistries. 相似文献

Using the radiopharmaceutical 99mtechnetium-sulfur colloid, the tracheal mucus transport rate (TMTR) was measured in healthy unanesthetized turkeys and in turkeys infected with Bordetella avium. The TMTR of uninfected turkeys was 35.6 +/- 14.4 cm/min. The TMTR of B. avium-infected turkeys was normal on days 0 through 14 postexposure (PE), despite heavy bacterial colonization of the tracheal epithelium. On day 21 PE, the TMTR of B. avium-infected turkeys was significantly depressed (P less than or equal to 0.01) compared with that of control turkeys. Depressed transport was associated with extensive loss of ciliated epithelium from the tracheal mucosa and replacement of the normal mucosa by immature nonciliated epithelium or metaplastic squamous epithelium. 相似文献

An Alcaligenes faecalis isolate from turkeys: pathogenicity in selected avian and mammalian species 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An Alcaligenes faecalis isolate of known pathogenicity for turkeys was examined for adherence and cytotoxicity in tracheal organ cultures of turkeys, chickens, Japanese quail, guinea pigs, hamsters, and mice, and for colonization and pathogenicity in these 6 species. Adherence and colonization were detected by fluorescent antibody staining. Infected and noninfected tracheal rings were examined by phase-contrast microscopy for cytotoxicity (ciliostasis, blebing of the cell membrane, and sloughing of the ciliated epithelium). Alcaligenes faecalis adhered to the tracheal rings of all species examined. Cytotoxicity was apparent in the tracheal rings of turkeys, quail, and chickens. Cytotoxicity was not detected in tracheal rings from the mammalian species. Alcaligenes faecalis colonization of turbinates and tracheas of intact turkeys and quail was detected. Clinical signs of alcaligenes rhinotracheitis were observed and histopathologic characteristics of the disease were detected. Chickens, guinea pigs, hamsters, and mice were refractory to infection with this isolate of A faecalis. 相似文献

The prevalence of two infectious bursal disease (IBD) viruses--serotype 1, of chicken origin, and serotype 2, of turkey origin--was studied in California turkeys. Serum samples were collected from 15 turkey flocks representing nine counties. The virus-neutralization test was used. Overall, only 15% of 342 samples were positive for serotype 1, whereas 89% were positive for serotype 2. However, 12 out of 15 flocks had a least one sample positive for serotype 1, and 14 out of 15 flocks had at least one sample positive for serotype 2. Flocks with antibodies to serotype 1 had low geometric mean titers (GMTs) (1.5 to 8.8) and low-to-medium prevalence rates (5 to 53.3%). Flocks with antibodies to serotype 2 had high GMTs (36.8 to 2048) and high prevalence rates (60 to 100%). Results of this study lead us to question the efficacy of IBD vaccination in turkeys. 相似文献

Experimental infection of turkeys with infectious bursal disease virus and the effect on the immunocompetence of infected turkeys 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Turkeys of various ages were infected with strains of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). Pathological signs of infection were detected only in turkeys 1 day old when infected. No differences in antibody responses to IBDV or virus recovery were observed between turkeys of various ages at the time of infection. Cellular and humoral immune responses were suppressed following infection of day-old turkeys. The effects varied with virus strain. 相似文献

Serum samples from seven randomly selected Minnesota turkey flocks were tested for antibodies to infectious bursal disease virus serotype I (Lukert strain, isolated from chickens, and North Carolina strain, isolated from turkeys) using a virus-neutralization (VN) test. All flocks were found to have low antibody titers to both Lukert and North Carolina strains. Five out of the seven flocks had high VN titers to the Missouri strain, a serotype II virus isolated from turkeys. 相似文献

Following the infection of turkey poults with a field isolate of infectious bursal disease virus, antibody levels were examined and reisolation of the virus was attempted. After inoculation at 36 days of age, peak titres in both the inoculated and a contact-exposed group were obtained after 13 days. The titres fell slightly during the next week and then remained level until the experiment was terminated at 91 days of age. Virus was reisolated from faeces from day 3 until day 8 after inoculation in the inoculated group and from day 4 until day 9 in the contact-exposed group. In the inoculated group, virus was recovered from the bursae, spleens and intestines on both days 4 and 6 after inoculation, but the thymuses on day 6 only. No clinical signs were observed. 相似文献
