The purpose of this study was to develop models for estimating yields of lumber grades and by-products of individual Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees using stem and crown dimensions as explanatory variables. Two separate data sets were used: (1) one simulated by the process-based growth model, PipeQual, which provides information about stem form and branch properties. The model was used to predict the 3D structure of Scots pine stems from thinning regimes of varying intensity and rotation periods and (2) an empirical data set with detailed 3D measurements of stem structure. The stems were sawn using the WoodCim sawing simulator and the yields and grades of the individual sawn pieces, as well as by-products, were recorded. The sawn timber was classified on A, B, C and D-grades for side and centre boards separately (Nordic Timber grading). By-products were pulpwood, sawmill chips, sawdust and bark.  相似文献

Abstract

Acetic–fatty esters of Scots pine sawdust (SPS) were obtained by reaction of SPS with mixtures containing acetic–fatty anhydrides and no solvent or catalyst. Such mixtures were synthesized by reaction between a carboxylic acid and acetic anhydride. The global reaction of acetic anhydride and a fatty acid yields at equilibrium a mixture of five compounds: acetic–fatty anhydride, acetic anhydride, fatty acid, acetic acid and fatty anhydride. The influence of temperature, molar ratio, reaction time and length of the fatty chain on the esterification and on the ratio of grafted acetyl/fatty acyl was investigated. Static contact angles (CAs) with water were measured over 5 min. CA values were dependent on the fatty acyl content and independent of the acetyl content. The minimum ester content of the oleoyl group required to obtain permanent water repellency was 25 mmol kg?1. Water vapour adsorption measurements indicated that in contrast to water repellency, hydrophobicity to water vapour was correlated with the total mass acyl content.  相似文献

This research investigates wood defects, particularly the formation of surface cracks, during the production of thermally modified wood and its exposure to cyclic moisture changes. Boards of Norway spruce and Scots pine originating from different steps within the production of ThermoWood® were collected and wood defects were investigated at macroscopic and microscopic scale. Subsequently, the wood was exposed to capillary wetting cycles to record its sensitivity towards cracking. After the modification process, typical anatomical defects of conventional kiln-drying became more frequent and severe, with the magnitude being to some extent depending on the presence of defects in the raw material. At microscopic scale, damages to ray parenchyma and epithelial cells as well as longitudinal cracks within the cell walls of earlywood tracheids were evident in thermally modified wood. Despite a lower water uptake and higher dimensional stability, thermally modified wood was more sensitive to surface cracking during wetting cycles than unmodified wood, i.e. at the outside face of outer boards (near bark). For limiting surface cracking of thermally modified wood during service life, the use of high-quality raw material, the exposure of the inside face of the boards (near pith) and the application of a surface coating are considered beneficial.  相似文献

Mistletoe infection results in substantial growth losses in mistletoe‐infected forests. This study reports and evaluates the results of retrospective analyses of radial growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in relation to the level of infection of pine mistletoe (Viscum album ssp. austriacum). A total of 43 Scots pine trees were destructively sampled from different sites. Of these trees, 14 were uninfected and 29 were infected. Infection classes were determined using six‐class dwarf mistletoe rating system (DMRS). All needle and mistletoe biomass were removed completely and weighed for each sampled tree. Subsamples from needles and all mistletoe biomass were taken to the laboratory for oven‐dried weight determinations. Five‐cm‐thick wood discs were cut from the stem at the breast height (1.3 m) to determine annual basal area increment for the last 25 years. In addition to DMRS, new infection classes were created using mistletoe‐to‐needle biomass (MB/NB) ratio. The results showed that the radial growth losses could be as much as 41% to 64% at different infection levels. The rate of growth loss in relation to DMRS and MB/NB ratio was similar, but with a larger variability in DMRS values. The results showed that both DMRS rating and MB/NB ratio seem to be important for quantifying growth loss on Scots pine trees infected with mistletoe. The results of this study can also be invaluable in modelling the effects of mistletoe on the growth of Scots pine trees.  相似文献

Knot properties have a profound influence on the suitability of wood for many wood products leading to significant value differences between different quality grades. It would therefore be rather advantageous to maximise the volume of good quality timber attained from the logs. The objective of this study was to assess how well A-quality lumber of Scots pine derived from log tomography features can be predicted with characteristics measured prior to or concurrently with the logging operation. The study is based on field experiments and X-ray scanning of 204 stems from southern Finland in 2014. We employed mixed logistic regression techniques to model the relationship between the main stem characteristics and probability of A-quality lumber. From the tree characteristics that can be measured or detected from standing trees, the height from the ground level to the lowest dead branch was found to be the best predictor of A-quality lumber. From the characteristics that could, at least in theory, be detected and measured at the moment of harvest, early growth rate and size of tree were found to be the best combination for predicting the probability of A-class quality.  相似文献

Abstract

Wood ash treatment can probably increase forest productivity on low fertility sites. However, the resulting effect on the carbohydrate concentration as the main carbon and energy reserve in trees is little studied. In 2000, a square of 0.1 ha sandy soil below a 19-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) plantation was treated with raw fly ash (0.5 kg.m-2); untreated square was used as control. One year after the treatment, carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, sucrose, maltodextrins, starch and excess bound fructose) were analyzed enzymatically from current-year and one-year-old needles. The ratio K/N in needles suggested an improved balance between these elements in treated trees, in which the K concentration was higher. The largest relative differences (50% of control) were observed in glucose and fructose in summer. The squares did not differ in the concentration of the accumulated carbohydrate reserves in needles during low temperature stress in winter and before the growth of new shoots in spring. During the vegetation period decreased levels of soluble carbohydrates and starch were observed (max 70% of the control value around 100 mg total carbohydrates g-1 dry mass). Because the experiment was designed without true replicates, reasons for the observed differences require further study.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the effect and importance of the feeding of the pine top weevil (Pissodes piniphilus) on the germination of Endocronartium pini (syn. Peridermium pini) in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), and thus to establish the possibility of the E. pini infection via insect woundings. Germination tests were therefore carried out on current and previous year needle and phloem extracts. Elucidation of the importance of pathogen infection for the insect's feeding preference was also required; for this purpose feeding preference tests were carried out with healthy and infected pine branches using the pine top weevil as a test insect. Weevil feeding increased the germination of E. pini aeciospores on pine extracts. Germination on previous year annual-shoot extracts was lower than that on current year annual-shoot extracts. The advance of the growing season increased this trend, but weevil feeding increased germination on extracts from older annual shoots to the levels found on extracts from current annual shoots. Spores germinated equally well on needle extracts and on phloem extracts. The weevils ate more often on infected branches than on healthy branches. E. pini infections may occur via woundings on branches and weevil feeding may facilitate this.  相似文献

It is indisputable that cambium maturity contributes to the basic density of wood. It is shown that in the case of two independent Scots pine materials collected from Eastern Finland, the basic density depends solely on cambium age, while distance from the tree pith makes no contribution at all. It is also shown that the basic density is independent of growth rate, even if it is negatively correlated with annual ring width.  相似文献

Scots pine is a highly diverse species, extended across Europe from Scandinavia to Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. It is also a valuable species, used in many commercial monoculture plantations in Great Britain and particularly in Scotland. Because of the diversity of growing environments and its commercial importance, it is necessary to identify the combination of significant factors affecting the observed variability of growth. Temperature, mainly during the growing season, is quite commonly considered as the most important factor in knowledge-based or empirical models. However, in highly oceanic climates like that of Scotland, the impact of temperature may have a less significant impact on growth. Here we argue that other factors, such as incoming winter solar radiation, frost, drought and management also have a significant effect on the growth of Scots pine. In addition, we argue that the already developed Ecological Site Classification knowledge-based model, used as a forest management tool in Great Britain, should be updated to incorporate our findings. Furthermore, we discuss the need to include management impact and possibly more physiological based components in its growth modelling routines, as these would allow the introduction of the effect of winter solar radiation.  相似文献

Effects of the timing of soil thawing in the spring on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were studied under controlled laboratory conditions. Sixteen 6-year-old saplings were lifted from the field, replanted in containers and placed in four treatments in controlled environment (CE) chambers with four replicate saplings per chamber. The saplings were held in the CE chambers during one simulated winter and one simulated growing season. The soil was frozen to -2 degrees C during a second simulated winter in the CE chambers, and the soil thawing treatments began at the end of the second simulated winter. Soil thawing began at various times before (no delay in thawing) and after (delay in thawing) chamber air conditions were changed from simulated winter to simulated summer. Delayed soil thawing subjected saplings to stress, with the severity of stress depending on the length of the delay in thawing. If there was no delay or only a short delay in soil thawing, stress was minor and reversible. A 2-week delay in soil thawing led to death of the saplings. Stress was apparent as decreases in the variable to maximal chlorophyll fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm), chlorophyll a/b ratio and needle water potential. In needles of stressed saplings, apoplastic electrical resistance first decreased and then increased and there were anomalies in the electrical impedance spectra of the stems. Stress from the soil thawing treatments affected both root and shoot growth.  相似文献

Comparative analyses were conducted on the nutrient element content and returning amount of main fractional compositions of litter in Korean pine (KP), Mongolian Scots pine (MSP) and Dahurian larch (DL) plantations in Laoshan Plantation Experiment Station of Maoershan Experiment Forest Farm of Northeast Forestry University. The results are as follows: (1) The nutrient element content and returning amount in litter varies among different fractional compositions and tree species, the total returning amount of all nutrient elements and the returning amount of K, Ca, Mg, N and P are DL > MSP > KP, the returning amount of Cu is DL > KP > MSP, the returning amount of Fe and Mn are MSP > DL > KP; (2) To KP and DL plantations, the main nutrient element returned is dead needles; dead branches, bark scales and dead cones account for a little proportion; whereas to MSP plantation, besides dead needles, dead branches and bark scales also play an important role in the return of nutrient elements; (3) A little deal of dead leaves can provided a great deal of returning amount of nutrient elements.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the pine-top weevil (Pissodes piniphilus) could be a vector of resin-top disease caused by Endocronartium pini. The association of this weevil with trees and stands infected with the fungus was studied. The number of pupal chambers around cankers and in trapping bolts indicated an association. Mobility studies with flight traps and sticky rings, however, gave inconclusive results as to the possible role of the weevil as vector of the disease.  相似文献

One‐year‐old container‐grown seedlings were planted in spring on clear cut areas: the Norway spruce (Picea abies) on a moist upland site (Myrtillus‐type) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) on a dryish upland site (Vaccinium‐type). While still in the nursery, half of the seedlings of each species had been inoculated during the previous summer, with a uninucleate Rhizoctonia sp., a root dieback fungus. At outplanting all the seedlings appeared healthy and had a normal apical bud, although the height of the inoculated seedlings was less than that of the uninoculated control seedlings. At the end of the first growing season after planting, the mortality of inoculated Scots pine and Norway spruce seedlings was 25 and 69%, respectively. After two growing seasons the mortality of inoculated seedlings had increased to 38% for Scots pine and 93% for Norway spruce. The mortality of control seedlings after two growing seasons in the forest was 2% for Scots pine and 13% for Norway spruce. After outplanting the annual growth of inoculated seedlings was poor compared with the growth of control seedlings. These results show that, although Rhizoctonia‐affected seedlings are alive and green in the nursery, the disease subsequently affects both their survival and growth in the forest.  相似文献

An investigation was carried out to compare the water balance of Scots pine in Flanders growing on soils with contrasted water availability. Based on sap flow measurements transpiration of Scots pine was determined for two small plots on cover sands resting on a clayey substratum of varying depths (shallow and deep). Soil water content (SWC) was relatively low (0.12–0.21 m3 m−3) in the upper topsoil (0–0.75 m) in both plots. However, it was always higher in the shallow plot (by 3–27%) than in the deep plot. The difference between SWC in both plots was more pronounced in the deeper soil layers (0.75–1.5 m). Sap flow was measured in seven sample pine trees on each plot from May to October 2000 using the heat field deformation (HFD) method. Transpiration of the individual trees in the deep plot was 22% lower than in trees in the shallow plot. The difference decreased to 15% after scaling up to the stand level due to a higher density of trees growing in the deep plot. It was hypothesized that higher water uptake in the shallow plot was possibly caused by structural differences between the root systems of trees growing in plots with variable soil texture. The sapwood in shallow-plot trees was 1 cm less deep than in trees growing in the deep plot (as measured by biometric and sap flow pattern methods). Sap flow radial patterns suggested a higher involvement of sinker roots for water uptake in the deep clayey substratum plot. This was in agreement with higher activity of the inner xylem in trees on the deep plot under higher evaporative demands. However, the fraction of the inner xylem to the whole-tree water supply was nearly three-fold lower than the outer xylem, which appeared to provide water presumably from the superficial roots. The fraction of these roots, estimated according to sap flow radial patterns, was around 10% higher in trees on the shallow plot. This caused 30% higher sap flow in the stem outer xylem there. Transpiration of the pine stands was limited under high evaporative demands in both plots by the low availability of soil water. The limitation was greater in the deep plot and persisted throughout the whole growing season.  相似文献
