Five newborn grade horned or polled Hereford calves in Ontario exhibited the clinical signs characteristic of hereditary neuraxial edema, namely, inability to rise, and hyperesthesia with extensor spasms upon tactile or auditory stimulation. Histologically, there was widespread spongy vacuolation in both white and gray matter in the brains of all five calves, especially in the midbrain, brain stem, and cerebellum. Amino acid analysis of formalin-fixed cerebral tissue of three calves demonstrated an amino acid composition consistent with a diagnosis of branched chain keto acid decarboxylase deficiency. This condition has been recently reported in Hereford calves in Australia; it is characterized by the delayed onset of neurological signs and severe lesions of status spongiosus, and has been considered analogous to maple syrup urine disease of children.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate cases of coat-colour dilution and hypotrichosis in a group of Hereford x Friesian crossbred calves, and to define the underlying molecular genetics of the disorder. METHODS: The investigation was predicated on the hypothesis that this disorder was similar to a known dominantly inherited disorder of calves of black breeds crossed with Simmental cattle, for which there were candidate gene mutations. Sequence analyses of PCR amplicons from exon 1 and exon 11 of the premelanosome protein 17 gene (PMel17) were carried out. Restriction enzyme digestions of amplicons were followed using electrophoresis of digested fragments. RESULTS: It was shown that an affected calf and its Hereford sire were heterozygous for a three-base deletion in exon 1 of the PMel17 gene. These two animals were also heterozygous for a second mutation in exon 11 of the PMel17 gene. Four other related animals were likewise heterozygous for both mutations in the sire's herd of origin. CONCLUSIONS: Coat-colour dilution and hypotrichosis in Hereford crossbred calves in New Zealand is the same genetic disorder as that previously described in Simmental crossbred calves, and is linked to mutations in the PMel17 gene.  相似文献

Breeds of larger mature size tend to grow more rapidly and be older when attaining a given level of fatness. Hereford, Limousin, and Piedmontese are of approximately equal mature size and yet may vary in body composition at a given degree of maturity. However, direct comparisons among these three breeds were not found. Therefore, the objective of this research was to compare Hereford, Limousin, and Piedmontese progenies for economically important traits. Crossbred cows were bred to Hereford (n = 23), Limousin (n = 24), or Piedmontese (n = 24) sires. Male calves were either left intact or castrated at approximately 2 mo of age. Calves remained with their dams until weaning at an average age of 179 d. Male calves were then individually fed a growing ration until they reached 386 kg and then fed a finishing ration either 90 or 132 d. They were then slaughtered at a commercial abattoir and carcass data were collected. Female calves were group-fed and used to examine nutritional effects on age at puberty. Data were analyzed using REML and linear contrasts among the breed-of-sire effects evaluated. Herefordsired calves had shorter gestation periods and weighed less at birth than either Limousin- or Piedmontese-sired calves. Calving difficulty of Hereford- and Limousin-sired calves was less than that of Piedmontese-sired calves. Limousin-sired calves tended to grow more rapidly than Hereford-sired calves. By the finishing phase, Limousin- and Hereford-sired calves had greater average daily gains than Piedmontese-sired calves. Differences in dry matter intake among breeds of sire were relatively small. Differences in carcass weight, longissimus muscle area, fat depth, and percentage kidney, pelvic, and heart fat resulted in a clear stratification of USDA yield grade between breeds of sire. Differences in percentage primal cuts were similar to those for USDA yield grade. Hereford-sired calves had more marbling than progeny of Limousin or Piedmontese sires. However, the force necessary to shear cores from steaks of Piedmontese-sired calves was less than for progeny of Limousin or Hereford sires. Hereford- and Piedmontese-sired heifers were younger at puberty than Limousin-sired heifers. Within breeds of similar mature size and growth rate, ample variation exists in age at puberty and body composition at an approximately equal degree of maturity.  相似文献

Mature dams representing Hereford, Red Poll, F1 Hereford x Red Poll, F1 Red Poll x Hereford, F1 Angus x Hereford, F1 Angus x Charolais, F1 Brahman x Hereford and F1 Brahman x Angus breed types were evaluated. All cows were bred to Limousin sires to produce two-way or three-way-cross progeny. Mature Brahman x Hereford dams produced a higher (P less than .05) percentage of live calves than Herefords, but dam breed differences in percentage of calves weaned relative to the number of cows exposed for mating were not statistically significant. Progeny of Angus x Charolais and Red Poll dams were outstanding in weaning weight, but Hereford and Brahman-cross calves were below average. Planned comparisons showed that Angus x Charolais calves were heavier (P less than .01) at weaning than Hereford (23.0 +/- 3.8 kg) or Angus x Hereford (9.6 +/- 3.2 kg) progeny. Mature Angus x Hereford mothers weaned heavier calves than did Brahman x Herefords (7.4 +/- 3.2 kg, P less than .05) or Brahman x Angus (10.9 +/- 3.0 kg, P less than .01). Analysis of the Hereford-Red Poll diallel showed evidence of maternal heterosis in calf weaning weight (4.0 +/- 2.6 kg, P less than .05), but there was no difference in the percentage of calves weaned by crossbred vs straightbred dams.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The clinical, pathological and biochemical findings of a study of 30 Poll Hereford, Hereford, Poll Hereford cross or Hereford cross calves affected with branched chain ketoacid dehydrogenase (BCKAD) complex deficiency or maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) are presented. In breeding studies, 6 of 21 calves from obligate heterozygote matings were affected with MSUD, suggesting the disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Calves were clinically affected from birth, but there were variations in the subsequent course of progressive deterioration of central nervous system function. Concentrations of the branched chain amino acids and keto acids were elevated in pre-suckle plasma and cerebellar water content was higher in affected calves. Activity of BCKAD complex was minimal in fibroblasts cultured from an affected calf. Spongiform encephalopathy and elevated ratios of the branched to straight chain amino acids in formalin fixed cerebral tissue were found in a stillborn foetus and a 3-month-old Hereford calf. These findings suggest the disease occurs prenatally and that a delayed form may exist.  相似文献

Male and female Hereford and Hereford cross beef calves between 2.5 and 4.5 months of age were implanted with 36 mg zeranol, 24 mg oestradiol 17 beta or left untreated, and then weighed every 4 to 5 weeks. Calves treated with zeranol or oestradiol 17 beta gained 9.6 kg (8.2%) and 12.9 kg (11.0%) more weight respectively than untreated calves. Steer calves gained more weight than heifer calves. There was no response to either growth promotant in heifers or in zeranol-treated steers beyond 35 days after implantation, and the only significant further gains in the next 31 days were made by steers treated with oestradiol 17 beta. After this time growth of treated and control calves was similar. The lack of a continued response to the growth promotants was not associated with significantly lower growth rates in any weighing interval.  相似文献

Data were 876 birth records and 727 weaning records of straightbred and F3 crossbred calves produced in the third generation of a five-breed diallel. Among straightbreds at birth, Holstein calves were heaviest and widest at the shoulders and hips. Jersey calves were lightest and narrowest at the hips, and Brahman calves were narrowest at the shoulders. Holstein crosses tended to be larger at birth than crosses among other breeds. Among straightbreds at weaning, Holstein calves were heaviest and tallest, and Hereford calves were lightest and shortest. Angus calves had the highest survival to weaning rate, and Holstein calves had the lowest survival rate. Among crossbred calves, Holstein crosses tended to be larger at weaning. Estimates of average heterosis retained for birth characters were not significant. Significant breed mean heterosis retention was observed for birth weight, shoulder width, and hip width of Hereford calves and for shoulder width and hip width of Holstein calves. Estimates of average heterosis retained for weaning weight and height were 6.1 kg (P less than .01) and 1.02 cm (P less than .05), respectively. In general, estimates of specific and average heterosis retained for survival to weaning were nonsignificant. Significant breed mean heterosis was observed for weaning weight and height of Brahman, Hereford, and Holstein calves and for survival to weaning of Hereford, Holstein, and Jersey calves.  相似文献

Reproductive traits and preweaning growth of progeny from young Hereford, Red Poll, Hereford X Red Poll, Red Poll X Hereford, Angus X Hereford, Angus X Charolais, Brahman X Hereford and Brahman X Angus dams were evaluated. First-calf heifers were mated with Red Angus bulls; Santa Gertrudis sires were used for each cow's second and third breeding season. Herefords, Red Polls and Hereford-Red Poll crosses were below average in percentage of calves weaned, whereas Angus-sired and Brahman-sired dams exceeded the overall mean. Angus X Charolais (P less than .10), Brahman X Hereford (P less than .01) and Brahman X Angus (P less than .10) dams weaned a higher percentage of calves than straightbred Herefords. None of these breed types differed from young Angus X Hereford females in reproductive performance. Angus X Charolais calves ranked highest in 180-d calf weight, exceeding progeny from both Hereford (P less than .01) and Angus X Hereford (P less than .10) dams. Brahman X Hereford dams weaned heavier (P less than .05) calves than Herefords, but their progeny did not differ at weaning from those reared by Angus X Herefords. Calves from Brahman X Angus dams weighed 12.7 kg less (P less than .01) than Angus X Hereford progeny. The effect of tick infestation of Hereford, Bonsmara and Nguni cows on the weaning masses of their calves in a dipping versus non-dipping situation was investigated. Breed had a major effect on the level of tick infestation, Herefords being most susceptible and Ngunis least. The productivity of Nguni cows, as measured by the weaning masses of their calves was also least affected. The effect of infestation on the productivity of Hereford cows was the greatest and that on the Bonsmara cows was intermediate. It was estimated that each engorged female tick (predominantly Boophilus decoloratus) caused a reduction of 8.9 g, 8.0 g and 8.6 g in the weaning masses of calves from Hereford, Bonsmara and Nguni cows respectively. The effect of infestation on the productivity of the Nguni cows was nevertheless small because a limited number of ticks fed to maturity on this breed due to its natural resistance.  相似文献

Hereford calves were infested with Psoroptes ovis. Hemograms were evaluated weekly for 7 weeks during progressively extensive dermatitis and compared to uninfested control calves. Calves were treated with ivermectin and weekly hemograms were compared for 4 weeks during regression of clinical disease. They developed extensive dermatitis and marked decreases in total white blood cells, neutrophils, and lymphocytes. Infested calves also had moderate anemia, increased plasma proteins, and increased plasma fibrinogen. Some calves developed marked eosinophilia. Within 1 week after ivermectin treatment, nearly all hematologic parameters returned or began to return to normal values, even though scabs remained on the calves at 4 weeks. Peak eosinophilia in calves which responded occurred 1 to 2 weeks after treatment. The findings indicate that most of the hematologic changes occurring with psoroptic scabies in cattle are associated with living mites and not with toxic substances in the scab on the skin surface.  相似文献

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is one of the most economically important diseases in preweaned calves. This study examined the health records of 45,497 calves over a 20-yr period to determine environmental and genetic factors influencing the incidence of IBK. Three data sets were analyzed with an animal model. The first data set (n = 41,986) evaluated environmental factors and genetic differences among nine purebred (Angus, Braunvieh, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Pinzgauer, Red Poll, and Simmental) and three composite breeds (MARC I, MARC II, and MARC III). Weaning weights of calves diagnosed with IBK were 8.9 kg lighter (P < 0.05) than weights of healthy calves. Incidence of IBK was related to age of the calf and the seasonal life cycle of the face fly (Musca autumnalis). Incidence of IBK increased in the spring (June), peaked during the summer months (July to September), and then decreased in the fall. Herefords were the most susceptible breed (P < 0.05) compared with all other purebreds and composites. Estimates of direct heritability for the incidence of IBK were generally low and ranged from 0.00 to 0.28 by breed. The maternal permanent environmental and genetic effects of the dam on the incidence of IBK were not significant for most breeds. The second data set (n = 9,606) was used to estimate heterosis for the incidence of IBK from a Hereford and Angus diallel design. The heterosis effect for the incidence of IBK in reciprocal Hereford/Angus crossbred calves was slightly negative (P = 0.12) but not large. The higher incidence of IBK in Angus x Hereford calves compared with Hereford x Angus calves (13.3 vs. 8.9%) suggests a maternal effect related to the incidence of IBK. Incidence of IBK in crossbred calves sired by tropically adapted breeds (Brahma, Boran, Tuli) compared with purebred and crossbred Bos taurus types was investigated in the third data set (n = 2,622). Crossbred calves sired by tropically adapted breeds had a lower incidence of IBK than most Bos taurus types (P < 0.05), but they were not different than either reciprocal crosses of Hereford and Angus or purebred Angus calves. Response to selection for decreasing the incidence of IBK is likely to be slow because of low heritability and low incidence in most breeds. Significant breed differences for incidence of IBK may be important to some producers and management systems.  相似文献

Thirty-four newborn polled Hereford and polled Hereford cross calves affected with a condition previously described as neuraxial oedema and six normal calves were examined. None of the affected calves were seen to stand after birth and when first examined the calves were in lateral recumbency, with extension and crossing of the hindlimbs. All the affected calves were bright and alert, could lift their heads and apparently could see and hear. When the calves were encouraged to stand spontaneous and stimulus-responsive myoclonic extensor spasms, with whole body rigidity, were consistently observed. Thirty-two of the affected calves had macroscopic lesions in the coxae. No significant pathological or biochemical lesions were observed in the central nervous system of any of the calves. The water content of the cerebellum did not differ between normal and affected calves. As oedema of the central nervous system is not a feature of this condition it is more appropriate to describe it as inherited congenital myoclonus.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate direct and maternal genetic parameters for calving difficulty score, stillbirth, and birth weight at first and later parities for Charolais and Hereford cattle in Sweden. Calving traits have long been recorded for pure-bred beef cattle in Sweden, but only birth weight has been used in the selection in order to avoid calving difficulties. Linear animal model analyses included records on birth weight for 60,309 Charolais and 30,789 Hereford calves born from 1980 to 1999, and calving traits for 74,538 Charolais and 37,077 Hereford calves born from 1980 to 2001. The frequencies of difficult calvings and stillbirths were approximately 6% at first and 1 to 2% at later parities for both breeds. Fewer than half the stillborn calves were born from difficult calvings. Heritabilities estimated for birth weight in different univariate and bivariate analyses for Charolais and Hereford calves born at first and later parities ranged from 0.44 to 0.51 for direct effects and 0.06 to 0.15 for maternal effects. Heritabilities on the observable scale for calving difficulty score of Charolais and Hereford, scored in three classes, ranged from 0.11 to 0.16 for direct and 0.07 to 0.12 for maternal effects at first parity, and lower at later parities. All estimated heritabilities for stillbirth were very low (0.002 to 0.016 on the observable scale). Direct-maternal genetic correlations were negative, with few exceptions. Genetic correlations between the traits and between parities within traits were generally moderate to high and positive. Calving difficulty score should be included in the genetic evaluation of beef breeds in Sweden, whereas progeny groups in Swedish beef populations are too small for stillbirth to be considered directly.  相似文献

Congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia (CDA) is a heterogeneous group of rare genetic disorders that in humans is characterised by ineffective haematopoiesis with morphological abnormalities in erythroid precursor cells and secondary iron overload. In the 1990s, a syndrome of CDA with dyskeratosis and progressive alopecia was reported in Poll Hereford calves in Canada and the USA. We report the clinical and pathological findings in two Poll Hereford calves with this syndrome from separate properties in South Australia. The animals had a variably severe anaemia, associated with abnormal nucleated red blood cells in peripheral blood, and large numbers of rubricytes and metarubricytes with a characteristic nuclear ultrastructure in the bone marrow. Both calves were born with a wiry hair coat and a progressively ‘dirty‐faced’ appearance associated with hyperkeratosis and dyskeratosis (apoptosis).  相似文献

Birth, weaning, feedlot and carcass traits were evaluated on 1,181 calves sired by Charolais and Limousin bulls out of eight crossbred dam groups (Hereford X Angus, Angus X Hereford, Simmental X Angus, Simmental X Hereford, Brown Swiss X Angus, Brown Swiss X Hereford, Jersey X Angus, Jersey X Hereford). Calves were born in the spring over a 4-yr period during which dams ranged from 3 to 8 yr of age. Charolais-cross calves were 2.7 kg heavier (P less than .01) at birth and had a 9.9% higher (P less than .01) incidence of difficult calvings and 4.6% greater (P less than .05) preweaning death loss than did Limousin crosses. Charolais-sired calves out-gained Limousin-sired calves by 31 g/d (P less than .01) from birth to weaning and were 9 kg heavier (P less than .01) at weaning. After weaning, calves were self-fed a finishing diet and slaughtered as each animal attained an estimated carcass grade of low Choice. Charolais-cross calves gained 60 g/d faster (P less than .01) than Limousin crosses, were fed 6.8 fewer d and were 17.3 kg heavier (P less than .01) at slaughter. Feed efficiency was similar for both sire breeds. On a grade-equivalent basis, Charolais crosses produced 7 kg heavier (P less than .01) carcass and had 22 g more carcass weight per day of age (P less than .01). Charolais crosses had slightly less internal and external fat. Dressing percentage was higher for Limousin cross calves (64.6 vs 63.9%, P less than .01). Longissimus muscle area and carcass cutability were similar for crosses of both sire breeds.  相似文献

The injection of iron-dextran into beef calves at an early age immediately increased values for erythrocyte (RBC) numbers, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), even though the calves were not anemic. There were no significant differences in average daily gain (ADG) from birth through 15 wk between those that were injected and those that were not injected. Hereford calves had lower values for PCV, Hb, MCH and MCV than Angus and crossbred calves, and both Hereford and Angus calves had lesser body weight and slower ADG than crossbred calves. Serum iron (Fe) concentrations were higher in calves born in the spring and pastured in the summer than in calves born in late summer and fall and pastured in the fall. The serum Fe concentration of calves at first sampling (during first week of life) was positively correlated with their weight at that and subsequent times to 15 wk. Mean corpuscular volume and MCH in cows before calving were positively correlated with the MCV and MCH in their calves at first sampling. Serum Fe concentration in cows before calving was negatively correlated with the ADG of their calves through 15 wk.  相似文献

Females representing Hereford, Red Poll, F1 Hereford x Red Poll, F1 Red Poll x Hereford, F1 Angus x Hereford, F1 Angus x Charolais, F1 Brahman x Hereford, and F1 Brahman x Angus breed types were evaluated from birth until 10 yr of age. Of 308 females born alive, 35.7% died or were culled because of injury, serious illness, or reproductive failure. Breed types differed (P less than .01) in total number of mating seasons per cow and total number of progeny born and weaned. Values for lifetime total number of calves weaned were as follows: Hereford, 4.54; Red Poll, 5.45; Hereford x Red Poll, 4.45; Red Poll x Hereford, 5.49; Angus x Hereford, 5.98; Angus x Charolais, 5.57; Brahman x Hereford, 6.96; and Brahman x Angus, 6.22. Brahman crosses (P less than .01) and Angus x Charolais (P less than .10) exceeded Hereford dams in lifetime total number of calves weaned but did not differ from Angus x Herefords. Analysis of the Hereford-Red Poll diallel showed no evidence of heterosis in life span traits. Results indicate that breed type was a major source of variation in reproductive life span of beef-type females. F1 Bos indicus crosses and Angus x Herefords were outstanding in longevity.  相似文献

Beef cattle health and performance records of 3637 calves from inbred and outbred populations were evaluated to determine the effect of scours on weaning BW (WW). Animals were maintained under similar environmental conditions at the Northern Agricultural Research Center near Havre, Montana. Inbred animals were linebred Hereford cattle with an average inbreeding coefficient of 0.20. Outbred animals were Hereford, Angus × Hereford, Simmental × Hereford crosses and backcrosses, and Tarentaise × Hereford crosses and backcrosses. Weaning BW was analyzed by least squares ANOVA. Model included year, age of dam, line (inbred or outbred), scours, and date of birth as a covariate. When zero WW were included for calves that died of scours (1%), all main effects were important. The least squares mean WW were 208 and 217 kg for scouring and non-scouring groups, respectively. Interactions between year × age of dam (P < 0.01) and year × line (P < 0.01) were detected. Incidence of scours was analyzed by the CATMOD procedure of SAS. The model included year, age of dam, and line (inbred or outbred). All main effects were important (P < 0.01). Incidence of scours ranged from 13% in 1982 to 64% in 1991. Incidence of scours was greatest in calves born to 2-yr-old dams with probabilities of 47% and 33% in inbred and outbred dams, respectively. These results indicate that scours negatively influenced WW. Incidence of scours was greater in calves born to younger dams and for inbred cattle.  相似文献

Three sets of blood samples were obtained from beef calves of two experimental populations and assayed for various immunological measurements. The first set of samples was taken between 24 and 48 h after birth and quantified for IgG1 concentration. A second set was taken immediately prior to vaccination for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV; at an average age of 164 d) and a third set taken 60 d post-vaccination. These later samples were quantified for antibodies specific to IBRV. Level of complement C3 was also quantified in the samples taken immediately prior to vaccination. Three hundred sixty-seven calves were from four Hereford lines; three lines were previously selected for growth traits and the fourth was a randomly selected control line. There were no consistent differences in immune traits among these lines. The second group of 165 animals were Angus, Hereford and Red Poll calves. While Angus calves had a higher mean IgG1 concentration at 24 to 48 h of age than Hereford or Red Poll calves, no differences among breeds were found for the other immune traits measured. Calves from older dams (greater than 3 yr old) tended to have higher mean IgG1 concentrations, pre-vaccination IBRV antibody titers and complement C3 levels than calves from 2- and 3-yr-old cows. However, these calves had lower 60-d post-vaccination IBRV titers than calves from the younger cows (P less than .05). OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of breed and oral vitamin E supplementation during late gestation on serum vitamin E and IgG concentrations in beef cows that calved in late winter and late summer and in neonatal calves. ANIMALS: 73 Angus and 43 Hereford primiparous and multiparous cows and their calves. PROCEDURE: Cows in groups that were homogeneous regarding breed and age distribution were randomly allotted to groups that were orally supplemented (n = 59) or not supplemented (57) with vitamin E beginning 30 days prior to onset of 65-day calving seasons. Supplemental vitamin E was provided in a vitamin-mineral mix offered free-choice until parturition. RESULTS: Cows that calved in late winter and were supplemented orally with vitamin E had higher serum vitamin E concentrations at calving and after calving than did unsupplemented cows; differences between groups before calving were not significant. Calves from supplemented multiparous cows had higher vitamin E concentrations than did calves from unsupplemented cows. Winter-born calves from supplemented Hereford cows had heavier 205-day adjusted weaning weights than did winter-born calves from unsupplemented Hereford cows. Supplementation did not affect vitamin E or IgG concentrations in the herd that calved in late summer and did not affect calf growth. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Oral vitamin E supplementation during late gestation may be economically beneficial in certain cow-calf operations in which late-gestation cows are consuming stored forages.  相似文献
