In 72 (46%) of 155 gilts discarded for genetic reasons after performance testing and housed under fattening conditions no heat could have been detected during the first 30 days. The gilts were assigned alternatingly to a control group and four different treatments of delayed puberty. The induction of puberty was carried out by injections of 1000 iu PMSG, 400 iu HCG and 2 mg oestradiol benzoate, 400 iu PMSG and 200 iu HCG and 800 iu PMSG and 400 iu HCG. If there was no estrus gilts were slaughtered 12 days later for examination of the ovaries. Those coming into estrus were slaughtered 8 days after disappearance of estrus. Estrus could be induced in 69 to 94% of the gilts, whereas 40% of the untreated showed estrus signs. After treatment with PMSG and HCG in 40 and 87% of the gilts cysts were found whereas none of the untreated and 26 and 29% of those treated with PMSG und HCG + oestradiol benzoate revealed ovarian cysts. In addition, those gilts that had come into estrus during the first 30 days were given injections of either 1000 iu PMSG or 800 iu PMSG and 400 iu HCG. The injections were made either on the 5th, 10th or 15th day of cycle. In both latter groups significantly more gilts showed standing heat than after treatment at cycle day 5. The results of inspection of the ovaries at slaughter and steroid hormones could not be assigned to a defined stage of the physiological ovarian cycle.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Three experiments, using a total of 132 pre-pubertal gilts, were carried out to investigate the influence of contact with oestrous female pigs on the attainment of puberty by gilts. Experiment 1 compared the effect of removing the gilts from their groups as they reached puberty in response to exposure to a boar, with leaving the gilts in their groups for five to 15 days after puberty or five to 15 days after second oestrus. All the groups exposed to boars reached puberty significantly earlier than controls (P less than 0.05) but there was no difference between these groups in their mean age at puberty. However, the synchrony of puberty was significantly greater among the gilts which remained in their groups after puberty (P less than 0.01) or second oestrus (P less than 0.001) than among the gilts which were removed at puberty. Experiment 2 investigated the influence of housing pre-pubertal gilts with penmates induced into puberty with injections of oestradiol benzoate. Puberty was significantly advanced by the presence of penmates regularly exhibiting oestrous periods. Experiment 3 compared the effect of daily exposure to an anoestrous ovariectomised sow, an oestrous ovariectomised sow or a boar, on the attainment of puberty by gilts. Sixty-four crossbred gilts were used to study the effect of mating at the first oestrus period following puberty. Puberty was induced at different ages by the introduction of the gilts to boars at either 160 or 200 days of age. Mating was delayed until second oestrus, when the mean age of the two groups was 197.8 and 237.2 days respectively. The difference of 39.4 ± 5.14 days was significant (P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the number of weight of pigs born or reared in any of the first five parities. Thirty four sows (seventeen from each treatment) completed five parities. The gilts mated at 237 days of age consumed 159 ± 38 kg (P < 0.01) more food between 160 days of age and weaning their fifth litters. The gilts mated at the younger age consumed 6.2% less food per unit of weaner liveweight over the five litters. Initial differences in liveweight between the two groups had disappeared by the middle of the second pregnancy.  相似文献

Two gilts, non-affected members of a litter which had been affected with thrombocytopenic purpura were mated to a boar which was an affected member of the same litter. During pregnancy the gilts were injected with pure thrombocyte suspensions from the boar. Antibodies to the boar's thrombocytes were demonstrated in the sera of both gilts and also in samples of their colostrum at each parturition. The piglets produced from these matings had normal thrombocyte counts at birth but a proportion of them developed thrombocytopenia and purpura similar to that seen in natural cases within a few hours of receiving colostrum. However, despite the fact that this condition was observed in three litters from each of the gilts, a secondary thrombocytopenia at 10 to 14 days of age, characteristic of the naturally occurring condition, was only observed in two piglets in one litter.  相似文献

One-hundred-and-twenty large white X landrace gilts were allocated at random to one of three treatment groups. Treatment A gilts were given an orally active progestogen, allyltrenbolone (Regumate; Hoechst UK) once daily for 18 days from 185 days of age. Treatment B gilts were given a subcutaneous injection of gonadotrophins (400 iu pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin, 200 iu human chorionic gonadotrophin). (PG600; Intervet Laboratories) at 203 days of age. Treatment C gilts received no exogenous hormones. All the gilts were housed in groups of 10 from 153 days of age, and up to 203 days of age were isolated from boars. From 203 days each group of 10 gilts was subdivided into two groups of five, a boar was accommodated in a pen adjacent to each group of five and daily contact with it was allowed for one hour. Eight gilts in treatment A, five gilts in treatment B and seven gilts in treatment C failed to exhibit oestrus before 233 days of age (P greater than 0.05). The intervals from exposure to the boar to the onset of oestrus for treatments A, B and C were 8.5, 5.5 and 11.0 days respectively (P less than 0.001). Gonadotrophin treatment significantly reduced the time taken by gilts to show oestrus and the variability within the group was significantly less than that in the other two groups. Three studies were conducted to examine the role of progesterone in stimulating sexual receptivity in estrogen-treated, ovariectomized gilts. Progesterone was administered either before, simultaneously with, or 48 h after estrogen. In each study, gilts were treated with either a suboptimal or an optimal dosage of estradiol benzoate (EB). Progesterone treatment (600 micrograms/kg BW-1 X injection-1) on alternate days for a total of four injections produced serum concentrations of progesterone that were maximal at 9.4 ng/ml and remained greater than 1 ng/ml for 15 d. Estradiol benzoate was administered 22 d after the first of these progesterone injections. When progesterone was administered concurrently with or 48 h after EB, the dosage was 100 micrograms/kg BW and produced a maximal serum progesterone concentration of 1.8 ng/ml 4 h after treatment. Gilts were placed in an evaluation pen with a boar for 5 min on d 3 and 4 after EB treatment. Traits of interest were total number of mounts by the boar, mounts before the gilt showed the immobilization response, proportion of gilts that showed the immobilization response, and latency from entry of the gilt into the evaluation pen until the immobilization response. In none of the three studies did progesterone improve any of the traits of interest. In each study the immobilization response was observed in a higher proportion of gilts treated with the optimal than in those treated with the suboptimal dosage of EB. The goal of this study was to determine the ability of the Hanover gilt model to assess in vivo fertilizing capacity of preserved sperm and to consider whether any modifications to this model were needed. This model evaluates the fertilizing capacity of semen based on the fertilization rate, the rate of normal embryos and the accessory sperm count of 3–5‐day embryos. Its distinguishing characteristics are the use of one‐time insemination of sperm in reduced numbers, of spontaneously ovulating gilts and of ovulation detection through ultrasound examination of ovaries. Reduced sperm numbers allow for an accurate evaluation of the fertilizing potential of different semen treatments, thereby avoiding the compensatory effect of doses calibrated to maximize fertility. The model's usefulness was assessed in a trial run designed to compare the fertilizing capacity of liquid boar semen diluted into two different extenders. The diluent, the boar and the backflow, had no significant effect on any of the parameters studied. Gilts inseminated less than 24 h before ovulation had a significantly higher (p < 0.01) fertilization rate and accessory sperm cell count (p < 0.05) than those inseminated more than 24 h before ovulation. Very good/good embryos from homogeneous litters (only very good/good embryos were present) had a significantly higher (p < 0.01) accessory sperm count than those from heterogeneous litters (at least one embryo was of a different quality and/or oocytes were present). Both very good/good and degenerated/retarded embryos from heterogeneous litters had low accessory sperm numbers. This suggests that accessory sperm count is significantly related to the quality of the litter, but not to the quality of the embryo within gilts. It can be concluded that the Hanover gilt model is sensitive enough to show fertility differences (in this study, those associated with in vivo ageing of semen), while using relatively few gilts and little time.  相似文献

Boar exposure has been used for estrus induction of prepubertal gilts, but has limited effect on estrus synchronization within 7 d of introduction. In contrast, PG600 (400 IU of PMSG and 200 IU of hCG; Intervet, Millsboro, DE) is effective for induction of synchronized estrus, but the response is often variable. It is unknown whether boar exposure before PG600 administration might improve the efficiency of estrus induction of prepubertal gilts. In Exp. 1, physical or fence-line boar contact for 19 d was evaluated for inducing puberty in gilts before administration of i.m. PG600. Exp. 2 investigated whether 4-d boar exposure and gilt age influenced response to PG600. In Exp. 1, 150-d-old prepubertal gilts were randomly allotted to receive fence-line (n = 27, FBE) or physical (n = 29, PBE) boar exposure. Gilts were provided exposure to a mature boar for 30 min daily. All gilts received PG600 at 169 d of age. Estrous detection continued for 20 d after injection. In Exp. 2, prepubertal gilts were allotted by age group (160 or 180 d) to receive no boar exposure (NBE) or 4 d of fence-line boar exposure (BE) for 30 min daily before receiving PG600 either i.m. or s.c. Following PG600 administration, detection for estrus occurred twice-daily using fence-line boar exposure for 7 d. Results of Exp. 1 indicated no differences between FBE and PBE on estrus (77%), age at puberty (170 d), interval from PG600 to estrus (4 d), gilts ovulating (67%), or ovulation rate (12 corpora lutea, CL). Results from Exp. 2 indicated no effect of age group on estrus (55%) and days from PG600 to estrus (4 d). A greater (P < 0.05) proportion of BE gilts expressed estrus (65 vs. 47%), had a shorter (P < 0.05) interval from PG600 to estrus (3.6 vs. 4.3 d), and had decreased (P < 0.05) age at estrus (174 vs. 189 d) compared with NBE. Ovulation rate was greater (P < 0.05) in the BE group for the 180-d-old gilts (12.7 vs. 11.9 CL) compared with the NBE group. However, age group had no effect on ovulation (77%) or ovulation rate (12 CL). Collectively, these results indicate that physical boar contact may not be necessary when used in conjunction with PG600 to induce early puberty. The administration of PG600 to 180-d-old gilts in conjunction with 4 d prior fence-line boar exposure may improve induction of estrus, ovulation, and decrease age at puberty.  相似文献

In the late fall and winter of 1982 to 1983, 112 crossbred gilts were used in a factorially arranged experiment to determine the effect of confinement on the age at which a gilt reaches first estrus (puberty). Two environments (confinement and non-confinement) and three ages at movement to non-confinement (100, 140, and 180 d) were studied. No differences were detected (P greater than .05) between confinement and non-confinement in the proportions of gilts reaching puberty by 210 d of age. Gilts were older at puberty (P less than .05) in confinement than in non-confinement (192.0 vs 187.7 d) and had a longer interval (P less than .05) from first boar contact to first estrus (12.1 vs 7.8 d). Age at puberty (192.1 vs 187.0 vs 190.5 d) and the proportion reaching puberty (56.4 vs 45.7 vs 65.8%) were not different (P greater than .05) between age-of-movement groups. However, a higher (P less than .05) proportion of the non-confinement gilts reached puberty within 10 d after the beginning of boar exposure than confinement (44.6 vs 26.8%). Moving gilts from confinement to non-confinement (pasture) at 180 d appeared to be the most effective method tested for inducing puberty in gilts.  相似文献

The effect of adrenal function and flumethasone (FM, a synthetic glucocorticoid) on induction of puberty in crossbred gilts raised in confinement was examined in two experiments. In Exp. 1, gilts were adrenalectomized (Adx) or subjected to sham adrenalectomy (Sham) between 140 and 160 d of age. Twenty days later indwelling jugular catheters were implanted in Adx, Sham and another group of intact gilts designated as Controls, and the gilts were moved from confinement to outdoor pens and checked daily for estrus with a mature boar. Fewer (P less than .05) Adx (1/11) than Sham (9/14) gilts showed estrus and ovulated by 205 d of age. Response of Control gilts (6/14) was not different from the other groups. Although Adx gilts received 40 mg cortisone acetate and 10 mg deoxycorticosterone acetate daily throughout the experiment, mean plasma glucocorticoids were lower (P less than .05) in Adx (24 +/- 4.7 ng/ml) than in either Sham (47 +/- 8.1 ng/ml) or Control (44 +/- 6.1 ng/ml) gilts. Experiment 2 was conducted to determine whether FM given to Adx gilts immediately after surgery could have inhibited estrus and ovulation. Intact gilts received a total of 27.5 (FM1) or 17.5 (FM2) mg FM over 4 d between 150 and 160 d of age before relocation and boar exposure 20 d later. Control gilts received no injections. Nine of 13 FM-treated but none of the Control gilts showed estrus. It is concluded from these results that the adrenal glands may facilitate the onset of puberty in gilts through increases in glucocorticoid production, but that this is not required for puberty to occur.  相似文献

Puberty, cycling, ovulation, conception and embryo survival were determined for gilts managed by a specific regimen in confinement. At weights of 70 to 80, 91 to 100 and 109 to 116 kg (groups A, B, C, respectively) gilts were (1) moved from rearing pens to pens in a separate broodstock building, (2) housed in groups of eight to 10 with unfamiliar penmates and (3) exposed to boar presence in an adjoining pen. Groups A and B were mated at third estrus; group C was mated at first estrus. For the three groups 76, 79 and 79%, respectively, of allotted gilts mated; of these 21, 13 and 11%, respectively, showed estrus again and were remated. Ten, 10 and 11%, respectively, were not pregnant when slaughtered at 25 to 28 d of postmating. Average days on experiment to first estrus were 14, 15 and 16 for groups A, B and C; mean interval between estrous periods was 21 d. Ovulations (13.3, 12.9 and 12.6) and live embryos (11.6, 11.1 and 10.7, respectively) did not differ significantly among groups. To determine whether recombinant porcine somatotropin (rpST) alters reproduction, 40 crossbred gilts weighing 59.1 +/- .5 kg at 125 +/- 1 d of age were assigned randomly to an experiment arranged as a 2 x 2 factorial. Eight gilts were given daily injections of diluent until they reached 104 kg BW (DW), and eight received diluent injections until puberty (DP). Twelve gilts were given rpST (4 mg/d) until 104 kg BW (PW) and 12 were given rpST injections until puberty (PP). All gilts were individually fed on an ad libitum basis an 18% CP corn-soybean meal diet (1.2% lysine and 3.1 Mcal/kg of ME). Beginning at 5 mo of age, gilts were exposed 20 min daily to mature boars. Serum concentrations of progesterone were measured weekly from 5 to 8 mo of age to verify age of puberty. Gilts observed in pubertal estrus were mated to two different boars 10 h apart. At 47 +/- 1 d of gestation, gilts were slaughtered to assess fetal development. After 60 d of treatment, serum LH and FSH profiles were determined in blood samples drawn at 20-min intervals for 4 h from eight diluent- and eight rpST-treated gilts fitted with indwelling jugular catheters. By 28 d, feed intake, feed/gain, and blood urea nitrogen were decreased (P less than .005) by rpST. Six series of experiments, involving 72 gilts in groups of 4 were carried out to investigate the effects of transportation, vibration and noise, and proximity of sexually mature adult breeding stock on attainment of first estrus in gilts of different ages. The animals grew normally during the periods of observation. Gilts aged 120 days (n = 12) at the start of the observations did not display estrus in response to exposure to vibration and noise or a 2 hr road journey. Similarly aged groups housed near adult breeding stock, but not exposed to vibration and noise, displayed estrus during the first 30 days of observation. All gilts aged 140 days (n = 12) displayed estrus within 5 days of being housed adjacent to adult breeding stock. Others, not housed near adult stock, but exposed to vibration and noise, or a road journey, did not consistently display estrus. When the observations were repeated on gilts aged 160 days (n = 12), the observations were similar. It was concluded that proximity of adult breeding stock and not transportation per se was the critical factor in inducing estrus behavior in normally growing gilts.  相似文献

One-hundred crossbred gilts were used in an experiment that was designed to examine the effects of duration of boar exposure on the proportion of gilts reaching first estrus. Two replicates (summer and fall) of 50 gilts each were randomly assigned, within litter, to one of the following treatments: 1) 30 min of daily boar exposure, 2) 15 min of daily boar exposure, 3) 5 min of daily boar exposure, 4) continuous fence-line boar exposure, plus walked to a neutral pen and exposed to a different boar for 10 to 15 min daily, or 5) continuous fence-line boar exposure. Boar exposure lasted for 30 d. The percentage of gilts exhibiting first estrus by 210 d of age ranged from a high of 65.0 for treatment 4 to a low of 10.0 for treatment 5. Treatments 1, 3 and 4 were greater than treatment 5 (P less than .05), but not different from treatment 2. There were no differences in average age at first estrus. Treatment means for days to puberty after boar exposure were not different (P greater than .05). However, a significant treatment X season interaction occurred. This interaction appears to suggest seasonal trends. These results indicate that treatments 1 and 4 (30 min daily and continuous fence-line boar exposure plus 10 to 15 min, respectively) were the most effective methods tested for the induction of first estrus.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the influence of growth rate and onset of boar contact on age at first observed estrus of the replacement gilts raised in Thailand. In total, 766 gilts were measured for body weight and backfat thickness prior to insemination. Body weight was further calculated for growth rate. Estrus detection was performed twice a day by back pressure test with an existence of mature boars with high libido. The first date of boar exposure and that of first observed estrus were individually recorded. Due to growth rate, they were classified into three groups: high (>700 g/day), moderate (600–700 g/day), and low (<600 g/day). According to onset of boar contact, the gilts were grouped into two categories: early (<150 days) and late (≥150 days). The results revealed that the gilts expressed first observed estrus, averagely, at age 205.1?±?34.1 days, had a growth rate of 615.5?±?57.6 g/day, and first contact with boars at 160.7?±?19.9 days of age. The gilts with low growth rate expressed first estrus later than those with moderate (208.6?±?2.0 vs 198.0?±?3.2 days, P?=?0.033) and high growth rate (208.6?±?2.0 vs 193.9?±?6.7 days, P?=?0.005) groups. Together with the influence of boar exposure, the gilts contacted boar earlier with high growth rate showed first estrus at age 180.3?±?10.1 days, whereas those with later boar contact with low growth rate showed first estrus at age 197.9?±?3.2 days. In summary, the replacement gilts should have high growth rate and contact boar early to attain puberty faster and possess decent subsequent reproductive performance.  相似文献

Age of gilts at first mating (AFM) is a factor associated with reproductive performance of female pigs. The objectives of the present study were to compare AFM and reproductive performance across parity between three herd groups based on a productivity measurement and to determine lifetime performance by AFM and the herd groups. The female data included 38,212 mated gilts entered between 2001 and 2003, and the herd data included mean measurements from 2001 to 2006 in 101 herds. The average female inventory of the 101 herds was 370.2 females. Females were categorized into five groups: AFM 188-208, 209-229, 230-250, 251-271 or 272-365 days. Three herd groups were formed on the basis of the upper and lower 25th percentiles of pigs weaned per mated female over six years: high-, intermediate- and low-performing herds. Multilevel mixed-effects models were performed to analyze comparisons. The AFMs (± SEM) in the high-, intermediate- and low-performing herds were 239.5 ± 0.22, 247.4 ± 0.21 and 256.7 ± 0.35 days, respectively. As the AFM increased from 209-229 to 272-365 days, annualized lifetime pigs born alive (PBA) decreased from 18.2 to 15.3 pigs, and the number of parities at removal decreased from 4.8 to 4.1 (P<0.05). In parity 1, females with an AFM of 209-229 days had fewer PBA, but had a lower culling risk and shorter weaning-to-first mating interval than those with an AFM of 251-271 days (P<0.05). In conclusion, we recommend management practices such as boar exposure to hasten puberty in gilts and decrease AFM.  相似文献

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an RNA virus in the order Nidovirales, family Arteriviridae, genus Arterivirus. The virus induces a prolonged viremia, replicates in macrophages, and produces persistent infection. The purpose of this study was to determine if PRRSV could persist for 90 d or more in a large population of breeding-age gilts housed under environmental conditions typical of commercial swine production and to determine if experimentally infected gilts could shed virus to naïve sentinel gilts beyond 90 d postinfection. Using the intranasal route, we inoculated 120 PRRSV-naïve gilts, 4 mo of age, with 5 mL of cell culture fluid containing a total dose of 102.4 TCID50 of a field isolate (MN-30100) of PRRSV. The index gilts were organized into 3 groups (A, B, and C), 40 gilts per group. To assess the dynamics of the experimental infection, a monitor group of 30 index gilts was blood-tested on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 postinfection. PRRSV viremia was detected with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on days 3, 7, and 14 and by virus isolation (VI) on days 7 and 14. PRRSV antibodies were detected from day 14 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). To assess shedding, 30 PRRSV-naïve sentinel gilts were commingled with the index gilts on day 90 postinfection and tested by PCR, VI, and ELISA every 15 d until 180 d postinfection; all samples were negative. To assess persistence, 40 index and 10 sentinel gilts were slaughtered at 120 (group A), 150 (group B), or 180 (group C) d postinfection. Evidence of PRRSV was not detected by PCR or VI in any tissue samples from the 120 index gilts. These results indicate that persistence and shedding of PRRSV are of short duration in breeding-age gilts.  相似文献

Establishing immunological memory in female piglets at a young age with PRCV was effective in inducing a secondary immune response to a limiting dose of virulent TGEV given orally 13-18 days prior to farrowing. Subsequently, because of passive antibody transfer, the offspring of these primed gilts were more efficient in surviving a lethal TGEV challenge. An average survival rate of 89% occurred in 6 litters of piglets from primed gilts that were boosted with 2.8 x 10(6) plaque forming units (PFU) of TGEV whereas 76% of the piglets survived in three litters that suckled primed gilts boosted with 3.0 x 10(5)PFU of TGEV. Non-primed gilts given identical pre-farrowing doses of TGEV had litter survival rates of 63 and 55%, respectively. Moreover, both groups of litters from primed gilts suffered less clinical illness (as measured by the extent of weight loss post-challenge) than control litters. Priming of the piglets as neonates and boosting the pregnant gilts produced an anamnestic systemic immune response and correspondingly higher milk titers in the primed gilts compared to control animals. Thus, priming piglets with PRCV was beneficial in providing resistance to TGEV and could be incorporated into a vaccine strategy that yields better protection against TGEV.  相似文献

Oestrous synchronization involves synchronization of ovarian follicular turnover, new wave emergence, and finally induction of ovulation. The final step can be synchronized by the parenteral administration of either GnRH or oestradiol benzoate. This study investigated corpus luteum and follicular emergence after ovulation had been induced by the administration of either GnRH or oestradiol benzoate. The injection of oestradiol benzoate may have delayed the emergence of the first follicular wave subsequent to the induced ovulation; administration of oestradiol benzoate or GnRH lowered the progesterone rise so that the maximum dioestrous concentration of progesterone on Day 9 was lower when cows were treated during pro-oestrus compared to the spontaneously ovulating controls. One implication of findings from the present study is that induction of ovulation with either oestradiol benzoate or GnRH, administered 24 or 36 h after withdrawal of the CIDR device, respectively, may lower fertility. Future studies must identify the timing of administration relative to the time of CIDR device withdrawal and the optimum concentration of oestradiol benzoate or GnRH that would not have untoward effects on the development of the corpus lutea, particularly within the first week of dioestrus.  相似文献

Two groups of twelve gilts each kept on platforms were synchronised in two passes over 20 days, using 100 mg Suisynchron per animal and die followed by PMS treatment (1,000 I.U. Intergonan) and HCG treatment (250 I.U.). Complement fixation occurred five days after the first hormone application and was followed twelve to 15 days later by another phase of treatment, using Gravigonan (250 I.U. follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), 500 I.U. HCG, 1 mg oestradiol benzoate in 10 ml serum of swine). Blood samples were continuously drawn during the various phases of treatment and cycle from the above animals as well as from 20 gilts synchronised in the above way and from another 20 untreated gilts. Protein-fixed iodine and copper levels were assessed from those samples. The protein-fixed iodine and copper levels of the blood were significantly reduced (P less than 0.01) by synchronisation, using Suisynchron. None of the two parameters was particularly affected by PMS and HCG treatments. Blood-borne protein-fixed iodine and copper was increased by administration of gonabione. Both parameters went up further during full oestrus at which date they were higher in untreated animals than in synchronised. (Protein-fixed iodine: 3.50/226micrograms/100 ml; P less than 0.01; copper: 0.283/0.234 mg/100 ml; P less than 0.01).  相似文献
