Orobanche and Phelipanche, commonly known as broomrape, are dicotyledonous holoparasitic flowering plants that cause heavy economic losses in a wide variety of plant species. Breeding for Orobanche resistance is still one of the most effective management strategies for this weed. However, previous efforts to find broomrape-resistant tomato (Solanum lycopersicon) genotypes have been unsuccessful. Here, we report on the isolation and characterization of a fast-neutron-mutagenized M-82 tomato mutant, Sl-ORT1. The Sl-ORT1 mutant showed resistance to Phelipanche aegyptiaca as compared to cultivar M-82; segregation analysis suggested a single recessive ort1 allele. Sl-ORT1 broomrape resistance was reflected in a lower number of broomrapes per plant, reduced P. aegyptiaca fresh weight per plant, and the absence of broomrape’s negative effect on plant host growth and yield. Sl-ORT1 was shown to be resistant to high concentrations of P. aegyptiaca seeds, and to another three broomrape species: Phelipanche ramosa, Orobanche cernua, and Orobanche crenata. Grafting experiments demonstrated that roots, rather than shoots, are necessary for Sl-ORT1 broomrape resistance. In addition, Sl-ORT1 was shown to be resistant to broomrape under field conditions. Since yield parameters are slightly affected by the mutation, this resistance gene should be introduced into tomato varieties with different genetic backgrounds; this newly identified Orobanche-resistant mutant may be further utilized in breeding programs for Orobanche resistance.  相似文献

The genetics of resistance of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) to broomrape (Orobanche crenata Forsk.) was studied for two years by using the P1, P2, F1, BC1, BC2, F2 F3, and F4 generations obtained from crosses between resistant and susceptible lines. Resistant lines were selected by screening a world collection m a naturally infested plot. Resistance was tested both under field and greenhouse conditions. The best index to measure resistance was the number of emerged broomrapes per host plant. The results fit the additive-dominance model. The main component of the variation was additivity; dominance and interaction effects seemed to depend on the environment. When dominance is expressed, a low number is dominant over a high number of broomrapes per host plant.  相似文献

Three pot experiments were earned our to investigate the variation among geographic accessions of Orobanche crenata Forsk. in their ability to attack different stocks of Vicia faba L. Orobanche accessions were quite different in their influence on the performance of genetic lines of the host. However, host parasite relationships appeared to be dependent upon environmental conditions. The usefulness or host genotypes for differentiating between parasite accessions was rather limited. The number of Orobanche shoots per host plant does not appear 10 be a precise indicator of host tolerance although it has been frequently used for this purpose.  相似文献

Summary Twenty five tomato cultivars and one accession of wild tomato were evaluated for their resistance to branched broomrape (Orobanche ramosa) infestation. Tomato cultivars were found different in their resistance to Orobanche based on different growth parameters. Total Orobanche number, haustoria development and number of emerged Orobanche shoots were all different between tomato cultivars. Differences in the growth and fruit yield among tomato cultivars were also found in response to Orobanche infestation. Ranking tomato cultivars for Orobanche resistance indicates the existence of different resistance mechanisms in these cultivars. Relatively high to moderate levels of resistance were obtained in Tiny Tim, Acora, Castler, Pomodora, Orient, Red Alert and the accession LA 1478 of L. pimpinellifolium. The cultivar Tiny Tim showed the highest level of resistance for all measured parameters and in all experiments.  相似文献

Six populations of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) were developed through various selection schemes to examine the influence of selection In improving tolerance to Orobanche crenata (Forsk.) in local faba bean stocks. All populations trace their origin to 209 farmers’ seed lots that were collected from Egypt. The entries of each population were grown during the 1982/1983 season in the Orobanche nursery located at Giza in Egypt. Comparison among means of the selected, populations showed that more progress in improving Orobanche tolerance could be achieved from combined selection between and within lots. Between-lots selection was less efficient than single-plant selection. Results, of this study show that considerable progress could be achieved from selection for Orobanche tolerance in local faba bean germplasm. There was sufficient residual genetic variation in the selected populations to expect substantial progress from further selection for most tolerance traits.  相似文献

Orobanche crenata , Orobanche aegyptiaca and Orobanche foetida constitute serious threats to grain legumes in the Mediterranean Basin. Lentil can be severely infected by O. crenata . It can also be damaged although with less virulence by O. aegyptiaca , and can only be slightly infected by O. foetida . Resistance breeding is hampered by scarcity of proper sources of resistance in cultivated lentil and of a reliable and practical screening procedure. A germplasm collection of 23 wild Lens spp. accessions was screened for resistance to O. crenata under field conditions. A wide range of responses was observed, from complete resistance to susceptibility. The higher levels of resistance were observed in accessions of Lens ervoides , Lens odemensis and Lens orientalis . Resistance of selected accessions proved to be mainly because of early hampered tubercle formation, with no observed necrosis of established tubercles. No differences were observed in levels of induction of broomrape germination, but necrosis of broomrape radicles was significant in some cases, particularly in the L. odemensis–O. foetida interaction. Escape because of the reduced root biomass diminishing the chance of contact between host and parasite was also observed in L. odemensis .  相似文献

Little resistance against Mycosphaerella pinodes is available in pea. In this work 78 accessions of Pisum were screened for resistance to M. pinodes. Fourteen accessions showed a good level of resistance in seedlings under controlled conditions, and in mature plants in the field. The highest levels of resistance were found in P. fuivum, followed by P. sativum ssp. eiatius and P. sativum ssp. syriacum. Resistance of five selected accessions was effective against different isolates of M. pinodes originating from different countries. Resistant accessions reported in this paper have been successfully hybridized with field pea cultivars.  相似文献

Summary Seven and a half thousand wheat varieties, including over 2,000 durums, were screened for resistance to Septoria tritici under conditions of artificial inoculation in the field. From this screening, 460 varieties were selected on the basis of resistance and earliness and were subject to more detailed observation.Selected varieties were tested in the field with two replications under both natural and artificial epidemic conditions. The agreement between varietal scores in the two replications and under the two conditions was good; 91–94% of varieties showing consistent disease scores. The correlation coefficient between varietal scores for the natural epidemic and the artificial epidemic conditions was 0.63***.A number of the very early maturing varieties of T. aestivum showed good resistance as measured by pycnidial production but exhibited extensive leaf necrosis. This reaction was not observed in later varieties and in accessions of T. durum.Varieties of Triticum durum were typically more resistant than varieties of T. aestivum. Thirty-four varieties of T. aestivum and 266 varieties of t. durum showed a consistent expression of resistance. A list of these 34 accessions of T. aestivum and selected accessions of T. durum is provided, along with agronomic data.  相似文献

Racial evolution of sunflower broomrape (Orobanche cernua) has been very rapid in Spain during recent years, in which resistance has been overcome several times and there has been an important increase in areas infested with this parasitic angiosperm. In order to find resistance to a highly virulent population of sunflower broomrape that could be used directly in breeding programmes, three different sets of cultivated plant material composed of 429 entries were tested by artificial inoculation. All evaluated inbred lines from Moden, Canada, were fully susceptible. Out of the 240 P.I. accessions tested, only 10 segregated for resistance to broomrape, the rest being susceptible. From the 160 USDA breeding lines evaluated, 5% were resistant and 19% segregated for resistance to O. cernua. These lines traced back mainly to crosses of RHA 274 and RHA 801 with Russian, Turkish and Romanian hybrids. The origin of P.I. accessions that segregated for resistance were primarily derived from the former USSR and from Romania.  相似文献

Over 540 accessions of wild Lycopersicon species or their crosses with L. esculentum were screened for resistance in a series of trials. Forty-six accessions were selected for the final screening trial based on lower disease ratings in previous trials. Of these, L. hirsutum had the greatest number of resistant accessions, followed by L. esculentum and L. peruvianum. Twenty accessions were quantified for their levels of resistance based on leaf area infected, area under disease progress curve (AUDPC), and the degree of sporulation. There was a significant positive correlation between the AUDPC calculated from 20 accessions evaluated under growth room and field conditions. Five L. hirsutum accessions had no sporulation associated with leaf lesions, whereas L. esculentum accessions had an average of 1.6×104 conidia/cm2 of leaf tissue. There was significant positive correlation between the AUDPC values and the number of conidia per cm2 of leaf tissue.  相似文献

Late blight (LB), caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans, is one of the most devastating diseases of the cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) worldwide. Most commercial cultivars of tomato are susceptible to LB. Previously, three major LB resistance genes (Ph‐1, Ph‐2, Ph‐3) were identified and incorporated into a few commercial cultivars of tomato. Reduced effectiveness and potential breakdown of the resistance genes has necessitated identification, characterization and utilization of new sources of resistance. We evaluated the response of 67 accessions of the wild tomato species, S. pimpinellifolium to LB, under multiple field and greenhouse (GH) conditions and compared them with six control genotypes. Sixteen accessions were identified with strong LB resistance in both field and GH experiments. However, 12 accessions exhibited resistance similar to a control line which was homozygous for Ph‐2 + Ph‐3. Genotyping accessions with molecular markers for Ph‐2 and Ph‐3 were not conclusive, indicating that resistance in these accessions could be due to these or other resistance genes. Strong correlations were observed between field and GH disease response and between foliar and stem infection.  相似文献

Hessian fly is an important pest of wheat on the North American continent and the temperate Mediterranean drylands. Yield losses caused by this insect in Morocco are the heaviest in the Mediterranean region and are estimated to be 36% on average. Genetic resistance to Mediterranean Hessian fly biotypes has not been found in durum wheat, although large numbers of durum accessions were screened. Genes for resistance were found in common wheat; some of which are transferable to durum. However, there is a need to broaden the genetic base for resistance in durum wheat. The objective of this work was to introgress resistance from selected Triticum araraticum and T. carthlicum accessions using multiple backcross methodology. The experimental recipient durum wheat included numerous adapted and high‐yielding lines. Testing for Hessian fly resistance under controlled conditions and field yield data showed that this programme yields Hessian fly‐resistant durum lines with good yields and adaptation.  相似文献

Nineteen accessions of the tuber-bearing species Solanum berthaultii, S. chacoense, S. leptophyes, S. microdontum, S. sparsipilum, S. sucrense, S. venturii, S. vernei and S. verrucosum were tested for their resistance to late blight in two years of field experiments. Plants were artifically inoculated with zoospores of race 1.2.3.4.5.7.10.11 and the development of the disease was followed. Resistance ratings, calculated as the areas under the disease progress curves (ADPC), demonstrated a high resistance in all accessions except in S. sparsipilum, S. leptophyes and their interspecific hybrid. Segregations suggest that major genes for resistance are present in S. sucrense and S. venturii, and may also play a role in S. verrucosum. It is not yet certain wether the resistance of the other accessions is comparable to the partial and durable resistance of S. tuberosum cultivars like Pimpernel, as inheritance and mechanism have yet to be established. However, segregations suggesting the presence of single major genes with complete dominance were not found in these other accessions. Tuber initiation in the field occurred in only one accession, S. tuberosum ssp. andigena, and maturity of the clones was not related to their resistance. In the other accessions maturity types could not be assessed, as the clones require short day conditions for tuber initiation.  相似文献

A total of 240 kale, 38 cabbage and 126 winter cauliflower French landraces from the B. oleracea genepool of INRA were assessed for resistance to clubroot caused by Plasmodiophora brassicaeWoron. Two French isolates of the pathogen (K and SJ) were used in the experiments under controlled conditions. The reaction of the 126 cauliflower accessions to naturally occurring clubroot was also evaluated in field trials. Kales exhibited considerable variation for expression of disease resistance and high levels of resistance were found in several accessions. In this group, single resistant plants were observed in most of the morphological types and from quite different geographical origins. Cabbage accessions were moderately to highly susceptible to both isolates. All cauliflower populations proved to be highly susceptible to K isolate and moderately susceptible to SJ isolate. In field trials, cauliflowers were also severely infected. Two lines selected from a resistant kale population were highly resistant against a large range of pathotypes of the pathogen. These lines presented a sufficient level of resistance to be directly useful in the breeding program in order to develop cauliflower and broccoli hybrids resistant to clubroot. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary Seventeen unreplicated field trials over nine sites and four years were used to classifyPisum germplasm (P. sativum L. &P. fulvum Sibth. & Sm) as potential sources of resistance to the pea weevil,Bruchus pisorum (L.). The emergence of adult weevils from <10% of harvested seed was used as the selection criterion to indicate possible resistance. A total of 1900Pisum accessions were assessed using the field trials and 1754 of theP. sativum accessions were eliminated. However in the 18P. fulvum accessions screened, the level of infestation by pea weevil was always below the arbitrary resistance threshold selected. This suggests thatP. fulvum accessions could be a valuable source of resistance to the pea weevil.  相似文献

Broomrapes are weedy root parasitic plants that severely constraint faba bean production. After long and extensive breeding efforts made in several countries only moderately resistant cultivars are available to farmers, being their resistance based on a combination of avoidance and resistance mechanisms. In this work we characterize the resistance mechanism of two faba bean breeding lines selected for resistance to Orobanche crenata. Mini-rhizotron experiments showed that low induction of seed germination is a major component of resistance in these lines against O. crenata, O. foetida and P. aegyptiaca. This is confirmed by in vitro experiments with root exudates. The fact that low induction of germination is similarly operative against O. crenata, O. foetida and P. aegyptiaca reinforce the value of this resistance.  相似文献

The need to increase forage production for the growing livestock population in the Mediterranean region necessitates the evaluation of various promising forage species with respect to maximum herbage yield, optimum time for harvest and seed yield. Seven forage legumes, woolly pod vetch ( Vicia villosa subsp. dasycarpa accession 683), narbon vetch (V. narbonensis accession 67), common vetch ( V. sativa selections 2541, 2037, 2020), common chickling ( Lathyrus sativus selection 439) and ochrus chickling ( L. ochrus selection 104) were compared over two years with contrasting rainfall. In both years the entries were sown in November and their primary growths sampled periodically during growth. For each sample, phenology, total dry matter, leaf area index (LAI) and, at maturity, total dry matter, seed yield and harvest index, were recorded.
In both seasons, narbon vetch attained the highest dry matter and seed yields, and there was very limited variability in the maximum dry matter yield of the other entries. In general, the maximum dry matter occurred at 20–50 % podding in woolly pod vetch, 100 % podding in common vetch selection 2541 (local), narbon vetch and common chickling and at maturity in common vetch selection 2037, selection 2020 and ochrus chickling.
Throughout the vegetative to early flowering stages, woolly pod vetch had the highest dry matter yield and LAI. Possible uses of each species as animal feed are discussed.  相似文献

Spodoptera litura (Fabr.), the tobacco caterpillar, is a major defoliator on sunflower in the tropics. Genetic variability for resistance to S. litura is limited in the cultivar germplasm of sunflower. In the present investigation, 43 accessions of 17 wild Helianthus species of the annual and perennial habit groups were evaluated along with cultivated sunflower under field and no-choice conditions in the laboratory for resistance to this pest. Under field conditions, H. occidentalis and H. argophyllus were found to be immune with no leaf damage and few accessions of the species belonging to section Divaricati were found to be resistant. Laboratory bioassays against neonate, two and 4-day-old larvae confirmed resistance both in terms of high larval mortality and low larval weight gain in eight species viz., H. occidentalis, H. argophyllus, H. tuberosus, H. maximiliani, H. mollis, H. simulans, H. divaricatus and H. hirsutus. Intra-accessional variability was observed and accessions of few species showed varied reaction (resistant, partially resistant to susceptible) to the target pest. Field evaluation of 224 backcross derived inbred lines from five cross combinations involving diploid species under high natural pest incidence revealed low damage in plants derived from crosses involving H. argophyllus and H. petiolaris.  相似文献

Lentil production is limited by lack of moisture and unfavorable temperatures throughout its distribution. Waterlogging and salinity are only locally important. Progress has been made in breeding for tolerance to drought through selection for an appropriate phenology and increased water use efficiency and in breeding for winter hardiness through selection for cold tolerance. The diseases rust, vascular wilt, and Ascochyta blight, caused by Uromyces viciae-fabae, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lentis, and Ascochyta fabae f. sp. lentis, respectively, are the key fungal pathogens of lentil. Cultivars with resistance to rust and Ascochyta blight have been released in several countries and resistant sources to vascular wilt are being exploited. Sources of resistance to several other fungal and viral diseases of regional importance are known. In contrast, although the pea leaf weevil (Sitona spp.) and the parasitic weed broomrape (Orobanche spp.), and to a lesser extent the cyst nematode (Heterodera ciceri), are significant yield reducers of lentil, no sources of resistance to these biotic stresses have been found. Directions for future research in lentil on both biotic and abiotic stresses are discussed.  相似文献

A total of 752 faba bean accessions were screened under field conditions for resistance to Ascochyta fabae. Several methods of assessing disease development were compared for evaluating the resistance of these accessions. Thirty‐four accessions displayed low disease severity ratings. In 15 of them, lesions were restricted in size and number, whereas in the remaining 19, lesions were well developed but scarce. These lines could have been discarded if screening had depended only on scales based on lesion type, which shows the need to complement such scores with disease severity or to use a simplified scale that integrates both lesion type and the amount of damage.  相似文献
