Rubber mats covering concrete slatted flooring are a developing market in dairy barns but remain rare in beef cattle facilities. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of covering slatted concrete floor with perforated rubber mats on behaviour and occurrence of skin and claw lesions in fattening bulls. The groups of six bulls each with a total average age of 9.8 months were kept over 1 year on either slatted concrete (CONCRETE PEN) or on slatted concrete covered completely (RUBBER PEN) or partially (CHOICE PEN) with perforated rubber mats. Every quarter-year, behaviour (preference of flooring, lying, aggression, mounting) was recorded. In two-weekly intervals the incidence of skin lesions was examined. At 12 and 18 months of age the rising time of the bulls was measured. At the beginning of the study and after slaughter claw dimensions were recorded. Bulls in the CHOICE PEN preferred (P<0.01) the rubber coated area throughout the experiment. Animals in the RUBBER and the CHOICE PENS showed more lying periods (P<0.01) and had a lesser incidence of skin lesions (P<0.01) compared to bulls in the CONCRETE PEN. Bulls in the CHOICE PEN needed less time for rising (2.7+/-0.3s) than bulls in the CONCRETE PEN (4.4+/-0.5s, P<0.01). Net claw growth differed significantly between all pens (RUBBER>CHOICE>CONCRETE; P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that rubber coated slatted flooring has a positive influence on the housing conditions of beef cattle. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of different levels of iodine supplementation on animal growth and the iodine content of food from beef cattle. In a dose–response experiment with 34 growing fattening bulls of the “German Holstein” breed, in the range from 223 to 550 kg body weight, three iodine dosages were tested. The animals were fed a corn silage/concentrate ration. Iodine concentration in the diet amounted to 0.79 (Group 1), 3.52 (Group 2) and 8.31(Group 3) mg I per kg dry matter (DM). After slaughtering, I was determined in blood, serum, plasma, thyroid, liver, kidneys and meat (M. longissimus dorsi, M. glutaeus medius) by ICP-MS. I-supplementation did not significantly influence DM intake, daily weight gain (1453 (1), 1419 (2) and 1343 (3) g; p > 0.05) or slaughtering performance, but the weight of the thyroid gland increased significantly with the highest I dosage (32 (1), 26 (2) and 42 (3) g animal− 1, p < 0.05). I-supplementation significantly increased I-concentration in muscle, liver, kidney and thyroid gland (p < 0.05). The contribution of beef food to I-intake of humans is relatively low, therefore there is no need to reduce the EU-upper limit (10 mg kg− 1 feed) for growing fattening cattle from the view of consumer safety. In view of animal health and performance more dose–response studies seem to be necessary. 相似文献

The effects of selenium (Se) supplementation and source on equine immune function have not been extensively studied. This study examined the effects of oral Se supplementation and Se source on aspects of innate and adaptive immunity in horses. Fifteen horses were assigned to 1 of 3 groups (5 horses/group): control, inorganic Se (sodium selenite), organic Se (Se yeast). Immune function tests performed included: lymphocyte proliferation in response to mitogen concanavalin A, neutrophil phagocytosis, antibody production after rabies vaccination, relative cytokine gene expression in stimulated lymphocytes [interferon gamma (IFNγ), interleukin (IL)-2, IL-5, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα)], and neutrophils (IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, TNFα). Plasma, red blood cell Se, and blood glutathione peroxidase activity were measured. Plasma and red blood cell Se were highest in horses in the organic Se group, compared with that of inorganic Se or control groups. Organic Se supplementation increased the relative lymphocyte expression of IL-5, compared with inorganic Se or no Se. Selenium supplementation increased relative neutrophil expression of IL-1 and IL-8. Other measures of immune function were unaffected. Dietary Se content and source appear to influence immune function in horses, including alterations in lymphocyte expression of IL-5, and neutrophil expression of IL-1 and IL-8. 相似文献

Understanding the reasons why animals of similar performances have different feed requirements is important to increase profits for cattle producers and to decrease the environmental footprint of beef cattle production. This study was carried out aiming to identify the associations between residual feed intake (RFI) and animal performance, nutrient digestibility, and blood metabolites related to energy balance of young Nellore bulls during the finishing period. Animals previously classified as low (n?=?13) and high RFI (n?=?12), with average initial body weight of 398 kg and age of 503 days were used. Cattle were fed a high energy diet and were slaughtered when rib fat thickness measured by ultrasound between the 12th and 13th ribs reached the minimum of 4 mm. A completely randomized design was adopted, being data analyzed with a mixed model that included the random effect of slaughter group, the fixed effect of RFI class, and linear effect of the covariate feedlot time. No differences were found (p?>?0.10) between RFI classes for performance, dry matter, and nutrients intake. However, dry (p?=?0.0911) and organic matter (p?=?0.0876) digestibility tended to be lower, and digestibility of neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (p?=?0.0017), and total digestible nutrients (p?=?0.0657) were lower for high RFI animals, indicating lesser capacity of food utilization. Difference between low and high RFI animals was also found for blood cortisol at the end of the trial (p?=?0.0044), having low RFI animals lower cortisol concentrations. Daily butyric acid doses of 0.5 g/kg body weight or 1.0 g/kg were intraruminally applied to 8 young fattening bulls together with regular feed rations, for 19 days, following an initial phase for adaptation. Indigestion phenomena were recordable from 30% of the animals, primarily on the early days of the experiment. Both doses produced sinusoidal beta-OH butyrate curves without major dose-dependent deviations. The concentrations of glucose and free fatty acids were indicative of temporary subclinical ketosis. Neither ASAT, ALAT, and gamma-glutamyltransferase nor bilirubin nor liver glycogen were indicative of liver damage. The lower dose of 0.5 g/kg was widely tolerated, but clearly discernible disorders developed in response to the higher dose of 1.0 g/kg of butyric acid. 相似文献

A daily dose of 1.0 g/kg body weight (b.w.) of butyric acid was intraruminally applied to 7 fattening bulls (360 kg in b.w. for 3 weeks. This caused slight clinical disorders, primarily in the form of reduced b.w. gain, but more strongly pronounced changes in beta-OH butyrate and in free fatty acids, with concentrations of these rising in the first experimental week, returning to normal in the 2, and rising again in the 3rd. Glucose concentrations went up during the experiment, but its diurnal curve then was, typically, inversed against beta-OH butyrate. Signs indicative of impaired liver function were not recordable. Minor stresses on the acid-base balance were visible towards the end of the experiment. 相似文献

Background
This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of DL-selenomethionine (DL-SeMet) supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant status, plasma selenium (Se) concentration, and immune function of weaning pigs. 216 weaning pigs were randomly allocated to 6 treatments with 6 replicates each according to a complete randomized block design. Each replicate had six pigs. Diet of group one was corn-soybean basal diet without any additional Se supplement. Group 2 was supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg of Se from sodium selenite. Groups 3-6 were supplemented with 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 mg/kg of Se from DL-SeMet, respectively. The trial lasted for 42 days.Results
Pigs supplemented with 0.3 and 0.7 mg/kg DL-SeMet obtained better feed gain ratio (P < 0.05). The best antioxidant ability (serum, liver, and muscle) was shown in 0.1-0.3 mg/kg DL-SeMet groups (P < 0.05). The plasma Se concentration increased as the dietary DL-SeMet level elevated. The immunity among groups was not affected.Conclusions
DL-SeMet supplementation in the diet significantly improved the growth performance, antioxidant ability and plasma Se content of weaning pigs. DL-SeMet can replace sodium selenite in the diet of weaning pigs. 相似文献9.

Effects of marginal selenium deficiency and winter protein supplementation on growth, reproduction and selenium status of beef cattle 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Seventy-two Hereford X Simmental cows, averaging 498 kg in body weight and 5.2 yr of age, were used in a 2-yr study to ascertain if selenium (Se)-vitamin E (E) injections and winter protein supplementation would affect growth, reproduction and health of beef cattle maintained year-round on feedstuffs marginally deficient in Se (.03 to .05 mg/kg). Cows received either no injection or a mixture of 30 mg Se (as sodium selenite) and 408 IU E injected subcutaneously beginning 3 to 4 mo prepartum and at 60-d intervals throughout the 2-yr period. Calves born to Se-E treated cows were injected with 5.5 mg Se and 75 IU E/100 kg body weight at 60-d intervals beginning at 1 mo of age. Calves were born between December 30 and February 20 and cows were bred between March 20 and May 20. Cattle grazed pasture (.05 mg Se/kg) that consisted of orchardgrass, bluegrass and white clover during the fall, spring and summer. During winter (December 15 to May 2), cattle were fed corn silage (.03 mg Se/kg) supplemented with either: no protein supplement (control), soybean meal or a urea-corn mixture. Cows and calves receiving Se-E had higher (P less than .01) whole blood glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and plasma Se concentrations than controls. Selenium-E injections reduced (P less than .05) calf death losses from 15.3% to 4.2% and slightly increased (P less than .10) adjusted calf weaning weights. The effects of continuous stray voltage were evaluated on growing-finishing pigs between the ages of 8 and 21 weeks. Seventy-two pigs were assigned to six blocks of 12 animals each. The following treatments were randomly distributed in each block according to a 2 x 3 factorial design: feeding level (restricted or ad libitum) and voltage level (0, 2 or 5 volts (V) as a difference of potential between feeder or drinker and the metallic floor). During daytime, stray voltage at 5 V decreased (p less than 0.05) the eating frequency in both feeding groups and the drinking frequency in restricted-fed pigs. The mean duration of drinking bouts and the total time spent at the drinker were also lower (p less than 0.05) in this last group during the hour following meal distribution. Daily feed intake and average daily gain were lower (p less than 0.05 and less than or equal to 0.08, respectively) in the 5 V group than in the 2 V and the control groups from 17 to 21 weeks of age. A retrospective study using analysis of plasma copper and zinc, and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase from 2 080 dairy and beef cow herds was conducted to evaluate the relationship between trace-element status and production, reproduction and health in cows and their calves. Classification of the herd status as deficient, marginal, low-adequate or high-adequate was based on the lower tercile of individual values. Odds ratios for each disorder in herds were calculated by multivariable stepwise logistic regression. Inadequate copper status was not associated with adult disorders, but was an important risk factor for poor calf performance or health. Selenium deficient status was associated with most studied disorders in cows, and both deficient and marginal herd status were strongly associated with poor health of calves, particularly with increased risks of myopathy and infectious diseases. Zinc insufficiency was strongly associated with low milk production and impaired locomotion in dairy herds, and was also associated with diarrhoea and poor growth in calves. Because a low-adequate status increased the risk of many disorders in adults and calves, we propose to classify herds as deficient and marginal when the lower terciles of plasma zinc concentration are below 12 and between 12 and 14 mumol/l respectively. 相似文献

本研究旨在评估母羊妊娠后期限饲对其肝脏功能及抗氧化性能的影响。试验选择平均体重为(52.82±2.72)kg的妊娠后期母羊(2~3胎次)36只,随机分为3组,每组6个重复,每个重复2头羊。各组分别饲喂对照组日粮(代谢能:0.68 MJ/kg代谢体重/d)、处理1组日粮(代谢能:0.17 MJ/kg代谢体重/d)、处理2组日粮(代谢能:0.34 MJ/kg代谢体重/d),试验从妊娠90 d持续至140 d。结果:处理1组母羊肝脏脂肪含量较对照组和处理2组显著提高了288.03%和282.48%(P<0.05)。与对照组相比,处理1组肝脏水分、灰分和蛋白质占比显著降低19.28%、44.32%和45.83%(P<0.05),但处理1组肝脏脂肪占比较对照组显著提高210.19%(P<0.05)。处理1组和处理2组血清非酯化脂肪酸含量较对照组分别提高199.94%和185.51%(P<0.05)。与对照组相比,处理1组血清β-羟丁酸和肝脏甘油三酯含量显著提高392.45%和329.55%(P<0.05)。处理1组肝脏超氧化物歧化酶、过氧化氢酶和总抗氧化力活性较对照组显著提高103.32%、83.36%和75.85%(P<0.05),同时处理1组丙二醛含量较对照组和处理2组显著提高54.52%和67.31%(P<0.05)。结论:妊娠后期限制母羊采食量会导致肝脏重量和蛋白质含量下降,同时引起肝脏脂肪的积累,肝脏抗氧化功能失衡。 相似文献

To determine the effect of repeated ketoprofen (K) administration to surgically castrated bulls on cortisol, acute-phase proteins, immune function, feed intake, growth and behavior, 50 Holstein x Friesian bulls (11 mo old; 300 +/- 3.3 kg) were assigned to one of five treatments: 1) untreated control (C); 2) surgical castration at 0 min (S); 3) S following an i.v. injection of 3 mg/kg of BW of K at -20 min (SK1); 4) S following 1.5 mg/kg of BW of K at -20 and 0 min (SK2); or 5) S following 1.5 mg/kg of BW of K at -20 and 0 min and 3 mg/kg of BW of K at 24 h (SK3). Castration acutely increased plasma cortisol concentrations in S- and K-treated animals compared with C, with no differences in peak and interval to peak cortisol responses among the castration groups. Overall, the integrated cortisol response was greater (P < 0.05) in the castrates than in C, whereas K treatments decreased (P < 0.05) this response compared with S alone, with no differences between K treatments. Plasma haptoglobin and fibrinogen concentrations were increased (P < 0.05) on d 3 in the castration groups compared with C as the result of tissue trauma induced by castration, whereas SK1 and SK2 had lower (P < 0.05) haptoglobin concentrations than S animals. On d 1, concanavalin A-induced interferon-gamma production was suppressed (P < 0.05) in S and SK3 compared with C, SK1, and SK2 animals. Overall from d 1 to 33, DMI were lower (P < 0.05) in S, SK1, and SK3 than in C animals. From d -1 to 35, ADG were lower (P < 0.05) in S, SK2, and SK3 compared with C animals. A higher (P < 0.05) incidence of standing postures and lower incidence of lying postures was observed in S compared with C during the first 6 h after treatment. However, the higher (P = 0.02) incidence of abnormal standing activities observed for S was reversed (P < 0.05) by the K treatments. In conclusion, surgical castration increased plasma cortisol and acute-phase proteins and decreased immune function, feed intake, and growth rate. Ketoprofen effectively reduced the cortisol response to castration, but there was no advantage in treating with two split doses of K (1.5 mg/kg of BW per dose). A repeated K dose 24 h after treatment (3 mg/kg of BW) had no influence on changes in acute-phase proteins and immune response. Systemic analgesia with K is an effective method for alleviating acute inflammatory stress associated with castration. 相似文献

Six Belgian Blue bulls (double-muscled type) and six Friesian bulls were offered a fattening diet for 34 weeks. Plasma samples were obtained once a week and also every 20 min over a 24 h period, 7 weeks before slaughter.No differences were observed between the breeds in plasma glucose, urea and free amino nitrogen concentrations, while creatinine was significantly higher in the Belgian Blue bulls. Tri-iodothyronin, tetra-iodothyronin, insulin-like growth factor 1, insulin and testosterone concentrations were higher in the Holstein group. In contrast, the Belgian Blue bulls appeared to produce more growth hormone. The slaughter weight, carcass weight, dressing percentage and proportion of lean meat were significantly higher in the Belgian Blue group. The characteristics of muscle mass (carcass weight, dressing percentage and proportion of lean meat) were positively correlated with creatinine and with the total peak area or peak amplitude of growth hormone. The insulin concentration was positively correlated with the proportion of adipose tissue in the carcass and negatively correlated with the proportion of muscle. There were no correlations between the carcass characteristics and insulin-like growth factor 1 or testosterone. The voluntary water intake was evaluated in 62 growing Holstein bulls (mean body weight range = 193 to 550 kg) during a whole fattening period. The diet was composed of corn silage and concentrates. Water was offered for ad libitum consumption. A total of 17,772 measurements of water intake were recorded over 282 days. The average daily water consumption was 18 kg/animal (S.D. = 6.7 kg). Applying a multiple regression analysis to the data set yielded the following equation: voluntary water intake (kg/day) = − 3.85 + 0.507 average ambient temperature (°C) + 1.494 dry matter intake (kg/day) − 0.141 roughage part of the diet (%) + 0.248 dry matter content of roughage (%) + 0.014 body weight (kg). The incorporation of the variables body weight gain, relative humidity, maximum ambient temperature, Na intake, and K intake into the equation did not increase the accuracy of the prediction. 相似文献

Effects of pre- or postpartum selenium supplementation on selenium status in beef cows and their calves 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effect of Se supplementation before or after calving on Se status in deficient cows and their calves was studied using 72 beef cows in two experiments. In Exp. 1, cows calving in February or March 1997 were supplemented orally for 15 d in late pregnancy with 13.0, 32.5, or 45.5 mg of Se/d as sodium selenite. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were measured in red blood cells (RBC) or plasma of cows and calves at d 15 and between d 17 and 88 after calving. In Exp. 2, cows calving in January 1997 were supplemented orally with .0, 13.0, or 32.5 mg of Se/d for 15 d postpartum, and calves were injected with 1.38 mg of Se when 2 d old and at an average age of 49 d. The GSH-Px activities were measured in 30-d-old calves and in cows and calves between d 77 and 115 after calving. In both experiments, Se supplementation resulted in adequate Se status for the dams. The increase in RBC GSH-Px activity was faster with 45.5 mg of Se/d, and GSH-Px activities remained high for up to 98 d after the end of supplementation. The improvement in Se status in calves as a result of maternal supplementation was greater in Exp. 1 than in Exp. 2, suggesting that the placental transfer of Se is more efficient than milk transfer. Prepartum oral Se supplementation of deficient beef cows with 13.0 mg of Se/d for 15 d allowed adequate Se status of dams and calves, and 45.5 mg of Se/d resulted in a faster improvement of Se status. Parenteral administration of 1.38 mg of Se to newborn calves did not sustain normal Se status in calves issued from deficient cows. 相似文献

将810只艾维茵肉雏鸡分成6组,分别饲以添加0(不添加蛋氨酸对照组)、2000mg/kg蛋氨酸(添加蛋氨酸对照组)和600、1300、2000、2700mg/kg甜菜碱的基础日粮共24d(1-24日龄)。期间,选择体重、体温和新城疫母源抗体相逝的13日龄母鸡72只(每组每重复4只),接种新城疫弱毒苗。结果表明:添加不同剂量甜菜碱均明显地促进免疫应答和减轻接种疫苗的体温反应,并随添加剂量的增加呈增强趋势,其中2000mg/kg剂量组效果最为显著,免疫后3、6d的新城疫的总抗体和6d的IgM抗体滴度较不添加蛋氨酸对照组分别升高54.17%(P<0.01)、28.76%(P<0.01)和44.94%(P<0.01),与添加蛋氨酸对照组基本一致;免疫后5、9、13h的体温,比不添加蛋氨酸对照组分别低0.55℃(P<0.01)、0.36℃(P<0.01)和0.21℃(P<0.05),比添加蛋氨酸对照组分别低0.41℃(P<0.01)、0.34℃(P<0.01)和0.17℃(P<0.05)。 相似文献
