Effects of aglepristone, a progesterone receptor antagonist, in a dog with a vaginal fibroma

A 12-year-old, entire, nulliparous crossbreed female dog was presented with a history of vulval bleeding, bulging of the perineum and faecal tenesmus. A firm, non-painful perineal mass, measuring 9.11x5.4 cm, with erythema was detected. Abdominal radiography showed compression and elevation of the rectal ampulla. A dose of 10 mg/kg aglepristone was administered subcutaneously on days 1, 2, 8, 15, 28 and 35. An incision biopsy was taken on day 15 and immunohistochemical analysis showed that the majority of neoplastic cells expressed progesterone receptors. Both the cutaneous erythema and the faecal tenesmus had resolved by day 28. A 50 per cent reduction in size was observed by day 60 (surgical excision). This study shows that benign tumours of the vagina of the dog that contain progesterone receptors can be reduced in size in a palliative or neoadjuvant setting using the progesterone receptor antagonist aglepristone.     

Effects of vincristine treatment on semen quality in a dog with a transmissible venereal tumour

The effect of vincristine treatment on semen parameters in a male boxer with a genital transmissible venereal tumour are described. The dog was treated with vincristine intravenously at 0.5 to 0.7 mg/m2 body surface area per week for six weeks until complete regression of the tumour occurred. Semen samples were collected before each application and then at weeks 10, 12, 17, 21 and 23 after the start of therapy. There were no alterations in libido or in testicular size and consistency either during or after treatment. Total sperm count decreased to abnormally low values during weeks 4 and 5, and then began to increase up to pretreatment values. No significant alterations in the other semen parameters were found during the study period.     

Effects of exercise and human contact on animal welfare in a dog shelter

The aim of the study is to investigate the reduction of stress in dogs in municipal shelters through easy-to-implement activities, ie, 25-minute sessions of exercise and human contact, that do not require a significant investment in terms of funding, staff or time. The results demonstrate that the dogs taking part in these sessions have lower salivary cortisol levels (F=121.42; P<0.05) and achieve better scores on a behaviour test (t(17)=4.27; P=0.001). It can therefore be affirmed that the exercise and human contact protocol proposed in the present study diminishes stress and improves the welfare of dogs housed in shelters.     

Protothecosis in a dog

A case of a disseminated algal infection is reported in a young rough-coated collie dog with progressive neurologic deficits, blindness, and hemorrhagic diarrhea. Prototheca zopfii organisms were cultured from feces, urine, and blood. At necropsy, granulomas containing typical organisms were identified within the proximal colon, heart, kidneys, and eyes.     

Hypocalcemia in a dog

A case of hypocalcemia was presented with a concurrent hyperphosphatemia. Normal renal function tests excluded primary renal insufficiency. The diet was thought to contain a normal ratio of calcium and phosphorus and, therefore, nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism was not considered. The radiographs showed normal bone density and the dog was not lame. Concentrations of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone were measured in an attempt to classify the etiology. The dog was successfully managed with calcium supplementation and vitamin D(3) or oral calcium alone.     

Phycomycosis in a dog

SUMMARY A case of phycomycosis, with skin lesions, in a dog is reported. Hyphomyces destruens (Pythium gracile) was identified from aspirate collected from a regional lymph node, and characteristic hyphae were seen in stained sections of a biopsy specimen of affected skin. Incidence, pathogenesis and therapy are discussed.
