The present study was conducted to evaluate superovulatory treatments in Awassi ewes by eCG and FSH. High number of unovulated
follicles (P < 0.05) was observed in ewes treated with eCG in non-breeding season. It could be concluded that using FSH to induce superovulation
in Awassi ewes is better than eCG. 相似文献

The present study compared the occurrence of oestrus behaviour and ovulation in response to the insertion of CIDR devices plus a classical treatment with equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG; single dose at CIDR removal) or alternative treatments with gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH, either in a single dose at 56 hr after CIDR removal, or in one dose at CIDR insertion and another dose at 56 hr after CIDR removal). The appearance of oestrus behaviour during reproductive season ranged between 84% and 95% and all females showing oestrus signs had subsequent ovulations. The response, during seasonal anoestrus, was similar in the group treated with eCG, but less than half of the females in the groups treated with GnRH showed oestrus signs in response to the treatment, although more than 80% of them showed resumption of ovulatory activity after the treatment. In conclusion, protocols based on GnRH administration offer similar yields to eCG-based protocols during the reproductive season but occurrence of oestrus in response to GnRH-based treatments is highly compromised during seasonal anoestrus. 相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to compare the effect of estrus induction by controlled internal drug release (CIDR) and intravaginal cream containing 500 mg progesterone (P cream) in ewes during the non-breeding season. In the first experiment, twenty-four ewes were randomly grouped for two treatments with the different intravaginal devices for 12 days: Group A was the CIDR group and Group B was the P cream group. Blood was collected from all treated ewes, and progesterone (P(4)), estradiol 17-beta (E(2)) and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were measured by enzyme immunoassay. In the second experiment, the conception rates from natural mating, estrus-detected AI (inseminated 12 h after estrus detection), or fixed-time AI (inseminated 42 h after removal of an intravaginal device) in 127 ewes treated with CIDR or P cream were compared. In Experiment 1, the rate of estrus induction and the time of estrus onset after device removal were 91.7% and 36.3 +/- 15.7 h in Group A, and 100% and 35.0 +/- 12.6 h in Group B, respectively. There were no significant differences between the devices. The mean plasma P(4) concentration in Group B was significantly (P < 0.01) lower than Group A between day -9 and day -1 (Day 0: the day of device removal). However, no significant differences were found in the mean E(2) concentrations of the two groups after treatment. The mean time of estrus onset in ewes with an observed LH surge and the time of LH surge after treatment were 23.3 +/- 8.7 h and 30.3 +/- 5.0 h for Group A and 27.6 +/- 6.5 and 26.3 +/- 8.0 h for Group B, respectively, and there were no significant differences. However, a significant difference (P < 0.05) was found in the mean time from the time of estrus onset to LH surge between Group A (6.4 +/- 6.7 h) and Group B (-1.3 +/- 4.1 h). In Experiment 2, the conception rates for natural mating, estrus-detected AI, and fixed-time AI were 55.0, 29.4, and 25.0% for Group A and 40.7, 25.0, and 42.1% for Group B, respectively, and there were no significant differences. These results suggest that the effect of induction of estrus and ovulation and the rate of conception after treatment were comparable to CIDR even though the plasma P(4) concentration of the P cream method tended to be low during the insertion period. 相似文献

The response to the ram effect and the use of progestagen priming was studied in postpartum suckling Corriedale ewes. Two
experiments were carried out during the non-breeding season. In experiment 1, the effectiveness of the ram effect to induce
fertile oestrus in postpartum ewes was determined. While no significant differences in the frequency of ewes in oestrus were
found, the overall conception rate was significantly higher in ewes that were weaned at least 6 months before the study started
(63.3%) than in 60–90 days postpartum ewes (45.3%, p < 0.01). In experiment 2, the influence of medroxyprogesterone acetate priming on the response to the ram effect in suckling
Corriedale ewes was determined. The frequency of ewes in oestrus and conception rate between ewes that remained unprimed and
6-days-primed ewes were similar. We conclude that it is possible to induce oestrus in postpartum suckling Corriedale ewes
using the ram effect during the non-breeding season and that the use of progestagen priming seems to be ineffective in improving
the response of postpartum ewes to the ram effect. 相似文献

Estradiol and progesterone may play a role in controlling leptin secretion by utilizing their receptors in adipocytes and the genomic mechanisms of the leptin gene. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of exogenous sex steroids on the blood leptin concentrations in ewes in the non-breeding season. Multiparous ewes were fed to maintenance level for their live weights. Blood samples were collected at 12-h intervals from Days -3 to -1 to determine the basal leptin levels (pre-injection period). From Day 0 to Day 5 (injection period), blood sampling continued at 12-h intervals, and the ewes were injected intramuscularly at 24-h intervals with oil, 50 mg progesterone in oil, 1 mg of estradiol in oil, or both steroids in oil. Leptin was measured using a sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay based on recombinant bovine leptin. Overall, plasma concentrations of leptin were not affected by any of the steroid treatments, and there were no differences in the value of leptin between the pre-injection and injection periods among the 4 groups. Therefore, the exogenous estrogen and progesterone used in this study do not have a strong effect on the blood leptin concentrations of ewes in the non-breeding season. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to compare three methods of estrus synchronization in ewes during the non-breeding season. Forty-two ewes were randomly grouped for three treatments with different intravaginal devices for 12 days: Group A) CIDR, Group B) Self-made P sponge, Group C) MAP (medroxyprogesterone acetate) cream sponge. Furthermore, all groups were divided into two treatments with (R) or without ram presence to examine the "ram effect". Blood was collected from all treated ewes, and progesterone (P(4)), estradiol 17-beta (E(2)) and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were measured by enzyme-immunoassay. All ewes showed estrus behavior between Day 0 to 3 after device removal, and the mean onset times of their estrus were 23.0, 33.0 and 21.0 h for Groups AR, BR and CR, respectively. On Day 5 as examined by laparoscopy, the ovulation rates (and number of ovulated ewes) were 1.45 (11/11), 1.25 (12/14) and 1.21 (14/14) for Groups A, B and C, respectively. In Group C, the time to LH surge was significantly (P<0.05) later (32.4 h) than those in Groups A (27.0 h) and B (25.5 h). Ram presence did not affect the number of ovulated ewes, ovulation rate or time to LH surge. The ram introduction group had significantly (P<0.05) lower E(2) concentrations during the period from 0 h to 36 h than the groups without ram presence. These results suggest that the self-made P sponge or MAP cream sponge was effective as well as CIDR, and ram introduction was not necessary, for induction of estrus and ovulation during the non-breeding season. 相似文献

One hundred eighty-nine Corriedale ewes were used during the non-breeding season to study the "ram effect" stimulus after priming with progestogens. Intravaginal sponges containing either medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP group, n = 49), fluorogestone acetate (FGA group, n = 49), or progesterone devices (CIDR group, n = 46) were inserted on Day-6 (Day 0 = introduction of the rams). Forty-five ewes were untreated and kept as a control group. On Day 0 the sponges were removed and rams provided with marking harnesses for oestrous detection were placed with the ewes. Onset of estrus was monitored until Day 25, and conception was determined by transrectal ultrasonography. Ewes came into heat during 4 periods: Days 0-3, 5-7, 17-20, and 21-23. The overall number of oestrus ewes were 29%, 53%, 35%, and 50% for the control, MAP, FGA, and CIDR groups, respectively (MAP and CIDR > control, p < 0.05). Control ewes presented oestrus only on Days 17-20 and 21-23. Oestrus in the progestogen-primed ewes was concentrated during Days 0-3 and 17-20, and some ewes came into oestrus on Days 5-7. There were no differences between different primings neither in oestrous response nor in conception rate. The conception rate from matings occurring on Days 0-3 was higher than on those occurring on Days 17-20. We conclude that MAP, FGA, and CIDR is equally effective in improving the response to the ram effect, and the pattern of oestrus in primed ewes was different than previously reported. 相似文献

Adult Suffolk ewes (n = 14) were treated on d 10 of the estrous cycle with anti-bovine luteinizing hormone (LH) antiserum. Control ewes (n = 10) were treated with normal horse serum. Estrous behavior and the number of corpora lutea and ovarian follicles were examined at the subsequent estrous cycle. Daily plasma concentrations of progesterone (P4), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol were determined before and after treatment. Ewes treated with antiserum had a higher (P less than .05) ovulation rate (2.7 +/- .2) than did controls (2.1 +/- .1). No differences were found in the numbers of large (greater than 5 mm) or small (less than 5 mm) follicles between treatment groups. Estrus was delayed (P less than .025) approximately .6 d/in ewes treated with antisera. Immunoreactive FSH increased (P less than .05) within 1 d after treatment and remained higher than the controls for 5 d. Peak estradiol concentrations occurred on d 17 for treated ewes compared with peak concentrations on d 15 or 16 for control ewes. The P4 concentrations were generally less (P less than .025) in treated ewes throughout the luteal phase of the treatment cycle. These data demonstrate that ovulation rate is increased in ewes treated with LH antiserum. The marked increase in plasma FSH suggests a possible mechanism whereby ovulation rate is enhanced. 相似文献

The effect of GnRH administration on superovulatory response of ewes treated with equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) in
breeding and nonbreeding seasons and the contribution of laparoscopic insemination to the improvement of fertilization and
embryo recovery were investigated. Twenty-four nonpregnant Awassi ewes of 3–4 years of age were randomly allocated into two
groups (n = 12). Each ewe was treated with a progesterone impregnated intravaginal sponge for 12 days. The following superovulation
treatment was used: ewes of group 1 received 1,200 IU of eCG once as an intramuscular injection 48 h prior to sponge withdrawal;
ewes of group 2 also received 1,200 IU of eCG once as an intramuscular injection, 48 h prior to sponge withdrawal and after
24 h of sponge removal. Ewes were injected with 80 μg of GnRH. Ewes of groups 1 and 2 were further subdivided into four equal
groups (n = 6). Subgroups A and C (superovulated with eCG and eCG plus GnRH, respectively) were mated naturally at least two times
with Awassi rams of proven fertility at 8-h intervals. Subgroups B and D (same as A and C) had intrauterine insemination at
44–46 h after sponge removal, under laparoscopic visualization of uterine horns, depositing 1 ml of diluted semen containing
100 × 106 motile sperm in the distal portion of each uterine horn. Ovarian response was assessed by determining the number of corpora lutea by laparoscopy at day 6 after mating. Embryo recovery was performed by using a semi-laparoscopic flushing procedure in both
uterine horns. Results of the present study showed that ewes treated in breeding season with eCG plus GnRH has a higher number
(P < 0.05) of corpora lutea than eCG alone as 7.33 ± 0.54 and 4.33 ± 0.39, respectively. There was no significant difference in the number of corpora lutea in nonbreeding season when ewes treated with eCG and eCG plus GnRH. The number of unovulated follicles was significantly
higher (P < 0.05) in eCG treated ewes than in ewes treated with eCG plus GnRH, both in the breeding and nonbreeding seasons. The number
of recovered embryos from ewes treated with eCG plus GnRH and eCG differ significantly (P < 0.05) as 4.32 ± 0.56 and 1.06 ± 0.26, respectively, in the breeding seasons. No significant difference was observed when
these hormones used for superovulation in the nonbreeding season. A higher number of unfertilized ova (P < 0.05) was observed in ewes when naturally inseminated than in ewes inseminated using the intrauterine laparoscopic technique.
Higher rate of embryo recovery (P < 0.05) was achieved when ewes were inseminated via intrauterine (4.66 ± 0.66) compared with ewes naturally mated (2.16 ± 0.74).
The fertilization rate in ewes inseminated intrauterine using laparoscopic techniques and naturally mated were 91.5% and 44.8%,
respectively. Fertilization failure in ewes inseminated intrauterine using laparoscopic techniques and naturally mated were
8.4% and 55.2%, respectively. It could be concluded that administration of GnRH 24 h after sponge removal increased ovulation
rate of Awassi ewes treated with eCG for superovulation in the breeding season. The use of eCG to induce superovulation in
Awassi ewes combined with laparoscopic intrauterine insemination increases the fertilization rate. 相似文献

Ovariectomized (OVX) ewes were injected with 5 ml of either bovine serum, charcoalextracted bovine follicular fluid (FF), or whole bovine FF. Five hours after this pretreatment, ewes on each pretreatment were injected with either 0, 1, or 5 μg of GnRH. Ewes that were pretreated with either type of FF had decreased concentrations of FSH regardless of dose of GnRH when compared to ewes pretreated with bovine serum. There was no effect of charcoal extraction. There were no differences among the pretreatment groups in LH response to GnRH. In a second experiment, OVX ewes were pretreated (4 ml) with either bovine serum or bovine FF 5 hr prior to GnRH or with bovine FF 42, 30 and 18 hr prior to GnRH. Ewes were injected with either 0 or 5 μg of GnRH. Pretreatment with FF for 5 or 42 hr prior to GnRH resulted in significantly decreased concentrations of FSH both at the time of GnRH treatment and during the following 2 hr. Concentrations of LH did not differ among pretreatment groups. In a third experiment, OVX ewes were pretreated with either bovine serum or bovine FF 30, 18 and 5 hr prior to GnRH. Ewes were injected with either 0, 5 or 50 μg of GnRH. Pretreatment with FF resulted in decreased concentrations of FSH both at the time of GnRH treatment and during the following 2 hr. Concentrations of LH were also decreased at the time of GnRH treatment. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate reproductive characteristics of stallions at a tropical zone in the breeding and non-breeding seasons. The following parameters were assessed: testicular volume; semen quality; and serum concentrations of LH, FSH, and testosterone; in addition to the percentages of germ cells and proportions of germ cells/Sertoli cells by testicular cytology in stallions. Semen was collected from eight adult stallions twice a week during a 12-week period in both seasons (6?weeks before and 6?weeks after the summer and winter solstices). Jugular blood samples were collected periodically for hormone analysis by radioimmunoassay during the same periods. Testicular measures and cytological samples were taken at the end of each period. Mean concentration of testosterone was significantly higher (P?=?0.04) during the breeding season and the proportion of Sertoli cells/100 germ cells in cytological smears was significantly lower during the breeding season (P?=?0.0001). Effects of season were not significant either for testicular volume or for any semen parameter (P?>?0.05). Seasonal changes in the mean concentrations of LH and FSH were not observed (P?>?0.05). There were also no significant differences in the mean percentages of germ cell types between both seasons (P?>?0.05). Lack of seasonal differences in the testicular volume and semen parameters of tropical stallions are probably due to the small variation in duration of natural light between the observed periods, slightly under 3?h. 相似文献

The effect of season (S), lamb rearing system (RT) and grain supplementation (GS) on post‐partum fertility in Katahdin ewes and growth in Katahdin lambs was evaluated. Katahdin ewes were bred to lamb in fall (n = 36) or spring (n = 56) and at approximately 2.5 months post‐partum were randomly assigned to be permanently separated or to continue to suckle their lambs for an additional 3 months. All ewes were joined with rams following treatment to synchronize oestrus. Weaned (W, n = 84) and continuously suckled lambs (CSK, n = 88) were fed forage only (n = 84; hay and pasture for fall‐ and spring‐born lambs respectively) or were supplemented (n = 88; 18% crude protein ration ad libitum) and all weighed biweekly. Ewes rebred in the fall had a shorter ram introduction to lambing interval (p < 0.05), higher prolificacy (p = 0.001) and higher lambing rates (p = 0.02); however, the proportion of ewes lambing was not affected by season. The first service lambing rate was lower in ewes continuously suckling lambs in the spring, but not in the fall breeding season (S × RT, p = 0.03). Lambs that continuously suckled their dams and were supplemented grew quicker and gained more (p < 0.001) than their weaned and unsupplemented counterparts. The effect of CSK on growth rate of lambs was greater in the spring (RT × S; p = 0.05), and the effect of supplementation on growth rate of lambs was greater in the fall (GS × S; p < 0.0001). In conclusion, Katahdin lambs achieved higher weight gains from continuous suckling and grain supplementation. Moreover, Katahdin ewes are capable of early rebreeding post‐partum while suckling their lambs, which makes them suited for use in accelerated lambing programmes. 相似文献

Pregnancy in out-of-breeding season in ewes increases the economical goals. Synchronization of estrus and ovulation is essential
for above program. The aims of this study using implant norgestomet with or without Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin (PMSG)
were to evaluate the serum progesterone (P4) concentration changes: the conception rate and estimation of the lambing rate
and litter size. In total, 80 non-cycling multiparous Iranian Kurdish breed fat-tailed ewes with <0/5 ng/ml P4 were used in
April and May 2008 in the suburb of Mashhad, Iran. The animals were randomly divided into three groups: a control group (n = 30) without hormonal treatment, another group (n = 25) received 3 mg of norgestomet implant placed subcutaneously in the convex surface of the ear for 9 days, and the third
group (n = 25) treated with 3 mg of norgestomet implant for 9 days with an IM injection of 500 IU PMSG at implant removal. The progesterone
of treatment and control groups were measured on days 4, 9, and 13 after removal of the norgestomet using radioimmunoassay.
Every five ewes were exposed to one ram after 24 h of norgestomet removal in treatment and control groups, simultaneously.
The pregnancy was examined after 25 days of ram removal using ultrasonography. Progesterone concentration was significantly
higher in treatment groups on 9 and 13 days after norgestomet removal (P < 0.05). The pregnancy rate in the control, non-PMSG, and PMSG treatments groups were 17%, 52%, and 72%, respectively. The
rates of single and twin pregnancy in the non-PMSG treatment group were 69% and 31%, respectively. These rates in norgestomet
and PMSG treatment group were 50% and 39%, respectively. Triplet pregnancy (11%) was observed only in the PMSG treatment group.
It was concluded that using implant norgestomet especially accompanied with PMSG can increase and improve the fertilization
rate of ewe in the out-of-breeding season program. 相似文献

Two experiments were performed to determine the endocrine and ovarian changes in medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP)-primed ewes after ram introduction. Experiment 1 was performed during the mid-breeding season with 71 ewes primed with an intravaginal MAP sponge for 12 days. While the control (C) ewes (n = 35) were in permanent contact with rams, the ram effect (RE) ewes (n = 36) were isolated for 34 days prior to contact with rams. At sponge withdrawal, all ewes were joined with eight sexually experienced marking Corriedale rams and estrus was recorded over the next 4 days. The ovaries were observed by laparoscopy 4-6 days after estrus. Four weeks later, pregnancy was determined by transrectal ultrasonography. In eight ewes from each group, ovaries were ultrasonographically scanned; FSH, LH, and estradiol-17beta were measured every 12 hours until ovulation or 96 hours after estrus. The response to the rams was not affected by the fact that ewes had been kept or not in close contact with males before teasing. No differences were found in FSH, LH, estradiol-17beta concentrations, growth of the ovulatory follicle, onset of estrus, ovulation rate, or pregnancy rate. Experiment 2 was performed with 14 ewes during the nonbreeding season. Ewes were isolated from rams for 1 month, and received a 6-day MAP priming. Ovaries were ultrasonographically scanned every 12 hours, and FSH, LH, estradiol-17beta, and progesterone were measured. Ewes that ovulated and came into estrus had higher FSH and estradiol-17beta levels before introduction of the rams than did ewes that had a silent ovulation. The endocrine pattern of the induced follicular phase of ewes that came into estrus was more similar to a normal follicular phase, than in ewes that had a silent ovulation. The follicle that finally ovulated tended to emerge earlier and in a more synchronized fashion in those ewes that did come into estrus. All ewes that ovulated had an LH surge and reached higher maximum FSH levels than ewes that did not ovulate, none of which had an LH surge. We conclude that (a) the effect of ram introduction in cyclic ewes treated with MAP may vary depending on the time of the breeding season at which teasing is performed; (b) patterns of FSH, and estradiol-17beta concentrations, as indicators of activity of the reproductive axis, may be used to classify depth of anestrus; and (c) the endocrine pattern of the induced follicular phase, which is related to the depth of anestrus, may be reflected in the behavioral responses to MAP priming and the ram effect. 相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate relative resistance of Dorper crossbred (DO), Katahdin (KA), St. Croix (SC), and Hampshire (HA) ewes to natural and experimental gastro-intestinal (GI) nematode infection over a 20-month period. The objective of Experiment 1 was to evaluate breeds for resistance to infection acquired naturally from mixed grass pastures. In Year 1 (May-December 2000) de-worming of ewes occurred during wet, hot conditions in July and during late pregnancy in December. In Year 2 (January-December 2001), ewes were de-wormed after fecal egg count (FEC) for a breed group rose above 1000 eggs per gram (epg) or after blood packed cell volume (PCV) of an individual ewe fell below 20. FEC was determined every 28 days and PCV every 14-28 days. In both the years, ewes were pastured together, except during the 28-days breeding periods, on tall fescue, bermudagrass, or ryegrass, and rotated among pastures dependent on forage availability. Ewes were in good or excellent condition (body condition score of 3-4 out of 5) throughout the study. The objective of Experiment 2 was to evaluate the breeds for relative resistance to an experimental infection with Haemonchus contortus infective larvae. Both PCV and FEC were determined every 7 days from 14 to 42 days after inoculation with 30000 infective larvae per ewe. In Experiment 1, Year 1, FEC was slightly greater and PCV was lower from July to September in DO ewes (breed x time, P<0.001). In Year 2, de-worming occurred 14 days later in DO ewes compared with other breed types. Otherwise PCV and FEC were similar among the hair breeds and higher and lower, respectively, compared with HA ewes (breed x time, P<0.001). In Experiment 2, FEC and PCV were similar among hair breeds; FEC was lower and PCV higher in hair breeds compared with that of HA ewes (P<0.01). Relative resistance of mature Dorper crossbred ewes was comparable to that of Katahdin and St. Croix ewes and superior to that of Hampshire ewes. 相似文献

The reproductive performance of postpartum Santa Inês (SI) and Morada Nova (MN) ewes treated with insulin or progesterone hormones in association with ram effect was evaluated. Ewes from SI (n = 69) and MN (n = 69) breeds were randomly allocated to three groups of each breed (T1—ram effect only; T2—ram effect + insulin; T3—ram effect + progesterone). Progesterone concentrations (ηg/ml; mean ± SD) before and after introduction of rams (n = 6) were 0.51 ± 0.22 and 3.78 ± 0.68 (T1), 0.65 ± 0.21 and 3.77 ± 0.78 (T2) and 0.52 ± 0.21 and 3.84 ± 0.84 (T3) in SI ewes and 0.74 ± 0.19 and 3.71 ± 0.56 (T1), 0.70 ± 0.21 and 3.79 ± 0.75 (T2) and 0.81 ± 0.14 and 3.87 ± 0.80 (T3) in MN ewes, respectively. Thus, lower progesterone concentrations were found before the introduction of rams (p < .05). After the introduction of rams, preovulatory peaks of LH (ηg/ml) occurred at 28 (T1), 44 (T2) and 48 (T3) hr in SI ewes and at 64 (T1), 40 (T2) and 44 (T3) hr in MN ewes. The mean number of ovulations was similar between groups (p > .05), was 1.3 ± 0.51 (T1), 1.5 ± 0.54 (T2) and 1.6 ± 0.51 (T3) in SI ewes and 1.3 ± 0.51 (T1), 1.6 ± 0.51 (T2) and 1.6 ± 0.51 (T3) in MN ewes. In conclusion, the ram effect alone is effective at inducing and synchronizing oestrus in sheep under postpartum anoestrus, irrespective of hormone treatments. 相似文献
