A review of the literature is presented on the strains of Mycoplasma isolated from the bovine genital tract and their relationship to infertility. Although Mycoplasmas have frequently been isolated from the genital organs of bulls, no typical clinical symptoms have been observed and no detrimental effects on spermatozoa have been shown. Mycoplasmas can be transmitted to cows by artificial insemination. In contrast to bulls, Mycoplasmas have been described as causing inflammatory changes such as cervicitir, endometritis and salpingitis in cows. Salpingitis, which may lead to obstruction of the oviduct, has the most serious consequences of later infertility. The author's own observations on the occurrence of Mycoplasmas in the herds in one area are briefly described. Prophylactic and therapeutic measures against genital Mycoplasma infections in cattle are also given.  相似文献

Natural venereal infection of heifers with IBR virus resulted in vulvovaginal lesions in 9 of 12 heifers at 3 weeks after introducttion to bulls, and virus was isolated from 5 of the 9 affected animals. The infection was not associated with any effect on conception. Experimental nasal and conjunctival infection of 18 heifers pregnant for 3, 5 or 7 months with a genital strain of IBR virus caused mild rhinitis or conjunctivitis in all inoculated animals and virus was recovered from 14 animals at 8 days after inoculation. No effects on pregnancy were recorded.  相似文献

Six Zebu bulls aged between 31 and 34 months exhibiting good libido were used to study sequential testicular and epididymal damage in Trypanosoma vivax infection. Three bulls were infected with T. vivax, while the other three served as controls. All infected bulls became parasitaemic by day 5 post-infection and developed clinical trypanosomosis with rapidly developing anaemia. Representative bulls, one from each of the infected and control groups, were sacrificed on days 14, 28 and 56 post-infection. Testes and epididymides from these animals were studied histopathologically after processing and staining with haematoxylin and eosin (H and E). Testicular degeneration developed in all the infected bulls characterized by depletion of spermatogenic cells and destruction of interstitial tissue. The most severe testicular degeneration occurred in the bull that was sacrificed 56 days post-infection. Epididymal sperm reserves were 36%, 4% and 0%, respectively, in infected bulls that were sacrificed on days 14, 28 and 56 post-infection. The 0% epididymal sperm reserve may suggest complete cessation of spermatogenesis. It was concluded from this study that T. vivax infection of Zebu bulls could cause severe testicular and epididymal damage that may result in infertility or even sterility of the affected animals at early infection stages not previously thought.  相似文献

M. bovis or M. bovigenitalium species experimentally used in intrapreputial infection were re-isolated from 7 of 8 bulls. Clinically manifest diseases did not develop at all, though slight inflammatory lesions were recorded from the genital tract of 2 animals. Mycoplasma findings are discussed together with results obtained from spermatological and hematological investigations.  相似文献

Effects of zeranol on scrotal circumference, serving ability, semen characteristics, and postmortem measurements of the genital organs were determined in beef bulls from 9 to 20 months of age. Group 1 (n = 5) served as a nonimplanted control group. Group 2A (n = 5) was implanted with 36 mg of zeranol at birth and at 3 and 6 months of age. Group 2B (n = 5) was implanted with 36 mg of zeranol every 3 months from birth through 18 months of age. Scrotal circumference was adversely affected by zeranol in groups 2A and 2B, but values approached those of group 1 with increasing age. Serving ability was also affected adversely but tended to recover with increasing age. Semen quality was low in groups 2A and 2B and did not improve with increasing age. There was no difference in testicular weight, vesicular gland weight, and penis length among groups when bulls were slaughtered at 20 months of age. Epididymal weight was greater in group-2B bulls and was most likely a consequence of epididymal lesions. Histologic examination of the genital organs revealed that zeranol induced adenomyosis and sperm granulomas in the caudae epididymidis and markedly altered the structure of the sexual accessory glands of bulls in groups 2A and 2B. Alterations in the vesicular glands were characterized by reduced alveolar development and an increase in connective tissue. Low epithelium associated with focal areas of squamous metaplasia were common in the prostate of groups 2A and 2B bulls. Lesions in the bulbourethral glands were characterized by low glandular epithelium, focal areas of squamous metaplasia, cystic collecting ducts, and an increase in connective tissue. Groups 2A and 2B had more abnormal seminiferous tubules than did group 1. Lesions in groups 2A and 2B may have been direct effects of zeranol or may have resulted from reduced testosterone secretion.  相似文献

The genitalia from 34 bulls were examined for the presence of Brucella lesions using histological, bacteriological and serological methods. Tissue fluids extracted from the various genital organs and the serums were examined using the serum agglutination test (SAT), the Rose Bengal plate agglutination test (RBPT), the complement fixation test (CFT) and the indirect haemagglutination test (IHLT) for the presence of Brucella antibody. Titres to one or more of these tests were found in 17 bulls and B. abortus was cultured from 5 of these. The testing of tissue fluids from genital organs did not increase the number of serologically positive animals.  相似文献

Experimental infection of the reproductive tracts of heifers and bulls with Tetratrichomonas sp. isolated from preputial smegma of virgin bulls was attempted. Nine heifers and four bulls were challenged by inoculation of 7 x 10(6) Tetratrichomonas sp. into the vaginal lumen and preputial cavity, respectively. Vaginal mucus and preputial smegma samples were collected and cultured for Tetratrichomonas sp. Heifers were slaughtered in groups of three at 2, 9 and 21 days after inoculation. Two heifers and two bulls infected with Tritrichomonas foetus and two uninfected heifers were used as controls for the model infection. Tetratrichomonas sp. were only isolated in vaginal mucus of 7/9 inoculated heifers at 6h post-inoculation, and genital secretions taken at slaughter time from vagina, uterus and oviduct were cultural negative. Bulls challenged with Tetratrichomonas sp. remained cultural negative. Since Tetratrichomonas sp. survived only a few hours in the female genitalia and did not survive in the male genitalia after experimental challenge, Tetratrichomonas sp. did not colonize the genital tract. These were likely trichomonads from the digestive tract. Collection of clean samples without fecal contamination from the reproductive tract is proposed as a measure to avoid Tetratrichomonas sp. transitory genital infection.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clearance, antibody responses, potential shedding, and histologic lesions in reproductive tissues of adult bison bulls after vaccination with Brucella abortus strain RB51. ANIMALS: 61 two- and 3-year-old bison bulls. PROCEDURE: 12 bison bulls were vaccinated s.c. with B abortus strain RB51, 3 were inoculated s.c. with 0.15 M NaCl, and antibody responses were evaluated. Various specimens were obtained to evaluate bacterial shedding. Four vaccinates and 1 control were necropsied 10, 20, and 30 weeks after vaccination. In a separate experiment, bison bulls were vaccinated s.c. with 0.15 M NaCl, or by hand or ballistically with strain RB51. Antibody responses were monitored 6 weeks after vaccination and during necropsy 13 weeks after vaccination. Tissue specimens obtained during necropsy from both studies were evaluated bacteriologically and histologically. RESULTS: Strain RB51 was recovered at various times from semen of 3 of 12 vaccinated bison bulls in experiment 1. During necropsy, strain RB51 was recovered 10 and 20, but not 30, weeks after vaccination. In experiment 2, strain RB51 was recovered from lymphoid tissues of hand- and ballistic-vaccinated bison bulls during necropsy. In both experiments, microscopic lesions in testes, epididymis, and seminal vesicles were minimal and did not differ between strain RB51-vaccinated and saline-inoculated bison bulls. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Strain RB51 does not induce relevant inflammatory lesions in reproductive tissues of adult bison bulls. Shedding of strain RB51 in semen may be transient in some bison bulls; however, the importance of this observation is unknown.  相似文献

Seven yearling bulls were treated with stressful exercise and intrabronchial Pasteurella haemolytica A1. Group 1 bulls (nos. 1–4) underwent treadmill exercise and, 24 days later, intrabronchial instillation of P. haemolytica A1. Group 2 bulls (nos. 5–7) underwent treadmill exercise, followed 30 min later by intrabronchial P. haemolytica A1. Blood lactic acid values were raised (p<0.05) by treadmill exercise only, but plasma cortisol was raised (p<0.05) by treadmill exercise and by P. haemolytica A1 infection. Neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) differed from control values 24 h after treadmill exercise, and 1 h and 4 h after P. haemolytica A1 infection.Respiratory disease was more severe and the gross lung lesions were larger in group 2 bulls than in group 1 bulls. P. haemolytica A1 was recovered from the livers, spleens and mesenteric lymph nodes of group 2 but not group 1 bulls, suggesting that group 2 bulls had experienced bacteraemia. Decreased neutrophils in BAL fluid from group 2 bulls at 1 h and 4 h after infection suggests that exercise transiently inhibited neutrophil egress from the blood to the alveoli; BAL neutrophils peaked at 1 h and 4 h after infection in group 1 bulls but declined at 24 h. Rams inoculated intravenously with Trypanosoma brucei developed scrotal oedema and a nonsuppurative granulomatous periorchitis resulting in testicular degeneration, atrophy, calcification and sclerosis. The tunica vaginalis was the seat of an intense granulomatous inflammation and focal necrosis, which extended to the epididymis and spermatic cord. Lesions in the seminal vesicles were suggestive of diminished testosterone production even though Leydig cells were discernible in the sclerotic testicular intertubular tissue. In areas where there was inflammation or focal necrosis, there was also extravascular localisation of trypanosomes. It is suggested that genital lesions in human sleeping sickness may have a similar pathogenetic mechanism involving tissue localisation of the trypanosomes and associated inflammatory and degenerative changes.  相似文献

The objectives of this work were to determine the site of persistence of lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) in bulls shedding the virus in semen for a period longer than 28 days, to determine if the virus is present in all fractions of semen and to study lesions that developed in the genital tract. Six serologically negative postpubertal bulls were experimentally infected with a virulent field isolate of LSDV. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed on sheath washes, vesicular fluid, supernatant and cell‐rich fractions of semen from day 10 to day 26 postinfection (p.i.). Bulls that were positive by PCR on the whole semen sample collected on day 28 p.i. were slaughtered and tissue samples from their genital tracts submitted for histopathological evaluation, immunoperoxidase staining, virus isolation and PCR. Two of the bulls developed severe lumpy skin disease (LSD) and were found to be shedding viral DNA in their semen on day 28 p.i. Viral DNA was identified in all semen fractions from all bulls, but mostly from the cell‐rich fraction and from the severely affected bulls. The PCR assay was positive on postmortem samples of testes and epididymides from the two severely affected bulls. Virus could be recovered from the testes of these two bulls and from the epididymis of one of them. Immunoperoxidase staining was positive for LSDV staining in sections of testes and epididymides exhibiting necrosis. This study suggests that the testis and epididymis are sites of persistence of LSDV in bulls shedding virus in semen for prolonged periods and revealed that viral DNA is present in all fractions of the ejaculate.  相似文献

Bovine IgG and albumin concentrations were determined from serum and semen of 59 bulls that were divided into 4 groups: 35 non-infected bulls (Group 1); 10 with vesiculitis due to Corynebacterium pyogenes (Group 2); 10 bulls with orchitis due to Chlamydia psittaci (Group 3); and 4 bulls with infectious vesiculitis (Group 4) sampled both before and after antibiotic treatment. Serum IgG concentrations (25 mg/ml approximately) were similar in non-infected (Gp 1) and infected bulls (Gp 2,3,4) whereas serum albumin concentrations were greater in infected than in non-infected bulls (51 mg/ml vs.41 mg/ml; p < 0.01). By contrast, both semen IgG and albumin concentrations in infected bulls (0.47 and 0.54 mg/ml respectively) were significantly different from those of non-infected bulls (0.14 and 0.32 mg/ml; p<0.01). In addition, bulls with chlamydial orchitis had both semen (but not serum) IgG and albumin levels higher than those suffering from vesiculitis (p< 0.01). Antibiotic therapy led to recovery and simultaneously to decreased concentrations of semen IgG and albumin.These results strongly suggest a local IgG synthesis or selective diffusion after such genital infections and further indicate that semen IgG and albumin assays could be a new and valuable tool for diagnosis and evaluation of genital infections.  相似文献

Temporary contamination of the penis and prepuce with Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis and Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis biotype intermedius may occur when immunised bulls mate with infected heifers. However, 2 experiments showed that this contamination was not a significant cause of genital infection in susceptible heifers that subsequently mated with bulls.  相似文献

Samples for histological studies were taken from the genitalia of 14 bulls (five infected with Trypanosoma vivax, five with T. congolense and four uninfected control animals), slaughtered 12, 22 or 30 weeks post-infection. Infection with Y58 strain of T. vivax and strain 2295 of T. congolense caused various grades of lesions in the male reproductive organs, especially the testes and epididymides. T. congolense produced more severe degenerative changes than T. vivax. It is concluded that in long-standing cases, the result of trypanosome infection is either serious infertility or even sterility.  相似文献

Holando-Argentina calves (males and females) were experimentally infected with Tritrichomonas foetus var. Belfast (T. foetus) by introducing 10(7) protozoa into the preputial and vaginal cavities, in order to analyse the course of the immune response to infection. Samples of serum, vaginal mucus and preputial secretion were taken periodically and assayed by means of microagglutination of living protozoa. The serum antibody titre, which averaged 32 before infection and was equivalent to titres in a non-infected group, increased to 512 in the heifers 11 weeks later and to 128 in the bulls 4 months post-infection. Agglutinating antibodies were not detected in the preputial cavity, but heifers showed antibodies in the vaginal mucus and became trichomoniasis free after 4 months. Conversely, genital secretions from the bulls gave rise to positive cultures during the whole period of experimentation. The intradermal sensitivity was checked using a soluble antigen from T. foetus. The diameter of the papula increased up to three times in heifers, while in bulls the results were no different than those from the non-infected group. Serum antibodies were of the IgG2 subclass, while those isolated from vaginal mucus were characterized as IgG1, an opsonizing antibody. Heifers were refractory to challenge infection after 1 year. The poor immune response in bulls is consistent with their role as carriers of T. foetus.  相似文献

Antibody responses in serum and semen, and immunoglobulin containing cell (ICC) populations in the genitalia of bulls were compared after inoculating Brucella abortus strain 19 into the seminal vesicles of two bulls (ISV route) and into testes in two other bulls (IT route). Bulls seroconverted as early as 1 week post-infection (PI). Peak serum titres as determined by the serum agglutination test (SAT), complement fixation test (CFT) and ELISA occurred at PI weeks 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Highest titres were in IT inoculated bulls. Seminal antibodies against B. arbotus S19 were demonstrated from 2 weeks PI by both the SAT and the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and highest titres occurred at PI weeks 3 and 4. Examination of immunoglobulins (Ig) in semen, however, revealed no significant differences of Ig isotypes between infected and control animals at any examination time. When bulls were killed at 7 weeks PI, quantitation of ICC in genital sections stained by the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase method revealed an overwhelming predominance of IgG containing cells in inflamed organs. In all cases IgG1- and IgG2-containing cells were prevalent, and present in approximately equal numbers. IgA-containing cells were second in prevalence in inflamed tissues while IgM cells were always in low percentage. High prevalence of ICC in infected genitalia, associated with elevated specific seminal antibodies but not with increased seminal Ig indicates that most Ig remains localised in tissues and is not transferred into genital secretions.  相似文献

Painful lesions of the vertebral column may cause decreased libido in bulls. Radiographic evaluation of vertebral skeletal problems in mature bulls is limited because of high body mass. Two breeding bulls with signs of decreased libido and spermatozoa production were evaluated. Initial systemic medical treatment for the conditions had not focused on localized lesions and was unsuccessful. Nuclear scintigraphy was performed in both bulls to determine the location of vertebral column lesions and facilitate localized treatment. Localized medical treatment was successful and resulted in decreased signs of pain and increased spermatozoa production in both bulls.  相似文献

Six cows were inoculated into the mammary gland with eight mycoplasma strains isolated from the genital tract of bulls and two type strains. The milk of cows infected with Mycoplasma bovigenitalium strains isolated from the genital tracts of bulls showed a change in the appearance and contained large quantities of mycoplasmas and specific antibodies. The mastitis was most intense in about 9 days and began to subside in 17 days infection. The type strain of M. bovigenitalium PG11 failed to produce mastitis. On the other hand, the type strain of M. bovis PG45 produced severe mastitis after a 14-day latency period, with the infection spreading to the uninoculated quarters, causing atrophy of the mammary gland, and persisting till slaughter. The sera of all cows that developed mastitis after experimental infection contained high titres of specific antibodies. The two infecting mycoplasma species were recovered from the inner organs and mammary glands of these cows after slaughter.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different implanting schemes on serum testosterone and cortisol concentrations, and carcass traits of bulls and steers implanted with trenbolone acetate (TBA) and zeranol (Z). Twenty Polled Hereford bulls were randomly assigned to one of three treatments after birth. Five calves served as nonimplanted control bulls (NIB). Nine bulls were implanted (IB) with 140 mg of TBA and 36 mg of Z at about 1 mo of age and reimplanted with both compounds 10 wk later. When IB calves were about 21 wk of age, the TBA implant was removed and calves were reimplanted with Z every 10 wk until slaughter. Six calves were castrated at 3 wk of age and implanted (IS) with TBA and Z every 10 wk until slaughter. Blood samples from each animal were obtained at 14-d intervals beginning at 14 wk of age and serum cortisol (C) and testosterone (T) concentrations were determined. The NIB had higher C levels than IB or IS (P less than .05) during the preweaning period. During the finishing period, there were no differences in C concentrations between NIB and IB; however, IS had lower levels (P less than .05) than both bull treatments. Serum T concentrations began to increase about 12 wk later (42 vs 30 wk, respectively) in IB compared with NIB. Testicular size was smaller (P less than .05) in IB than in NIB. No differences (P greater than .05) were observed in carcass characteristics. Taste-panel scores were not different among treatments. In conclusion, implanting schemes using TBA and Z lowered serum levels of C and delayed puberty in bulls; however, they did not alter carcass characteristics or eating quality.  相似文献

Contents: Bulls, rams and he-goats masturbated partial a short time after a heavy sexual strain. The value of these semen seemed to correspond to physiological values. Young bulls started to masturbate in the age of 8 months and young he-goats in the age of 3½ months. The masturbation is to interpret in the development of behavior as an idle-action.
