Does the system work? After having been on a controlled heifer replacement program for 3 to 5 years, the entire herd will develop a short calving season resulting in more weaned calf weight per cow exposed to breeding. Wiltbank has reported on the advantage of feeding heifers for a selected target weight at breeding. Two groups of Brahman-cross heifers were fed to weigh 600 or 700 lbs at the beginning of the breeding season. They were pastured and fed similarly from breeding through weaning their first calves. The heifers that weighted 700 lb at breeding weaned 86 lb more calf per heifer exposed. They bred earlier and more became pregnant. The return above feed costs after 2 years breeding was $52 greater for the heavier heifers. Obviously, the benefits continue through subsequent calvings, emphasizing the importance of managing the replacement heifers for 3 years, through their second breeding and calving.  相似文献

The growth of Holstein heifers in the campesino dairy systems in the highlands of Mexico was evaluated in three feeding strategies. Thirty-three heifers from 11 farmers, grouped according to strategy, were weighed every 14 days for 28 weeks. The live weight change over each 14-day period was estimated by individually regressing live weight over period, taking the regression coefficient as an unbiased estimate of live weight change. Regression coefficients were analysed as a randomized design with feeding strategies as treatments. Strategies were as follows: S1: grazed or cut pasture all year, maize silage and maize straw in the dry season, and 1.0–1.5 kg concentrate/heifer per day. S2: maize straw in the dry season, cut pasture forage, grazing of native grass, weeds from maize fields, and 1.0–1.5 kg concentrate/heifer per day. S3: maize straw in the dry season, grazed native grasses and weeds in the rainy season. Live weight gains were: S1, 0.511 kg/heifer per day; S2, 0.271 kg/heifer per day; and S3, 0.252 kg/heifer per day. Despite the better gains in S1, they are 24% below recommendations, arriving to service at 20 months of age. Not rearing their replacements may be a better alternative for campesino farmers under current economic conditions.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to quantify the relationships between traits observed before the first breeding season and fertility of 946 Angus and 351 Simmental heifers and to use those traits to develop prediction equations for heifer fertility. Logistic regression methodology was used. Traits investigated were Julian birth date, age of the heifer's dam, birth weight, actual weaning and yearling weights, weaning and yearling weight ratios, 205-d weight, 365-d weight, and birth-weaning, weaning-yearling, and birth-yearling ADG and relative growth rate (RGR). In both breeds heifers that were younger at the start of the breeding season were less likely to conceive, but this effect was more important for Angus (logistic regression coefficient, b = -.032; P less than .01) than for Simmentals (b = -.015; P = .06). Weaning weight ratio was positively associated with heifer fertility (b = .025; P = .01 and b = .028, P = .04, respectively, for Angus and Simmental), whereas actual weaning weight was related curvilinearly to fertility of Angus heifers. The likelihood of conception was highest for Angus heifers weighing greater than or equal to 240 kg at weaning. The only postweaning trait associated with heifer fertility was weaning-yearling RGR. The likelihood of conception was highest for Angus heifers growing between .15 and .30% per day (P = .01), whereas fertility increased continuously (P = .04) for Simmental heifers as weaning-yearling RGR decreased. The maximum variations in fertility explained by models including all possible explanatory variables were 11.5 and 9.2% for Angus and Simmental, respectively. Results suggested that growth-related traits were relatively more important as a predictor of fertility for Simmental heifers and that age at the start of the breeding season was more important for Angus heifers. The combination of Julian birth date and weaning-yearling RGR produced the best models to predict heifer fertility for both breeds.  相似文献

Ninety crossbred beef heifers averaging 260 kg were blocked by weight and allotted randomly to 15 pens of six heifers each, with three replicates per treatment. The treatments were spayed heifers (S); intact heifers (I); S + Synovex-H7 (SH); I + Synovex-H (IH); and S + Synovex-S7 (SS). The heifers were spayed vaginally with a Willis instrument; intact heifers were rectally palpated for reproductive soundness. Heifers were fed a growing diet (55 d), re-implanted and subsequently fed a finishing ration (73 or 101 d). All heifers were observed for estrus daily at approximately 0600 and 2000 until d 69. A jugular vein blood sample was obtained from each heifer on d 48, 55, 62 and 69 for blood progesterone analysis. Results of blood progesterone analysis and reproductive tract examination indicated that two spayed heifers were incompletely spayed, a 96% success rate. The SH and SS heifers continued to exhibit estrous behavior despite being successfully spayed. Heifers implanted with Synovex-H had greater (P less than .01) ADG and were more efficient (P less than .03) than nonimplanted heifers. The SS heifers had greater ADG (P less than .05) during the finishing phase than SH heifers, but no advantage of SS over SH was apparent during the growing phase. The overall ADG response to implantation was fourfold greater (P less than .07) in the spayed heifers than in the intact heifers (32 vs 8%). Heifers implanted with Synovex-H had greater adjusted hot carcass weight (P less than .02) and ribeye area (P less than .002) than nonimplanted heifers. For adjusted live weight and ribeye area, the response to implantation was approximately threefold greater in the spayed heifer than the intact heifer. These results demonstrate that spaying and implanting heifers can increase rates and efficiency of gain even though behavioral estrus is not eliminated.  相似文献

Postweaning growth, sexual development and reproductive traits were evaluated over a 3-yr period on 201 spring-born and 180 fall-born crossbred heifers with 0, 1/4 or 1/2 Brahman breeding. The proportion of Brahman breeding X season of birth interaction was significant for five traits (average daily gain weaning to yearling, yearling condition score, percentage of heifers detected in estrus, prebreeding condition score and percentage of heifers that became pregnant) and was not significant for six traits (yearling weight, hip height and conformation score, age and weight at puberty and prebreeding weight. Among spring-born heifers, 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman heifers outgained (P less than .05) 0 Brahman heifers from weaning to yearling by 50 and 66 g/d, respectively; among fall-born heifers, 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman heifers outgained (P less than .05) 0 Brahman heifers by 41 and 104 g/d, respectively. Yearling weight of 1/2 Brahman heifers was 13 and 10 kg heavier (P less than .05), respectively, than 0 and 1/4 Brahman heifers. Yearling hip height of 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman heifers were 1.9 and 5.7 cm taller (P less than .05), respectively, than 0 Brahman heifers. Weight prior to the start of the breeding season were similar among crossbred heifer groups and spring-born heifers were 66 kg heavier (P less than .05) than fall-born heifers. The percentage of heifers that became pregnant was similar among spring-born crossbred heifer groups, whereas among fall-born heifer groups 1/4 and 1/2 Brahman heifers were 25.2 and 49.4 percentage points lower (P less than .05), respectively, than 0 Brahman heifers.  相似文献

Zeranol implants were administered to 250 crossbred heifer calves at 1, 6 or 9 mo of age to evaluate growth, reproduction and calving performance. Heifers were assigned to eight treatment groups with 25 animals per group. Two additional groups of 25 heifers each were used to study the effects of multiple implants at two levels of nutrition on heifer performance. Implants at 1 mo of age (branding) increased heifer weights at 6 mo of age (weaning) by 5 kg (P = .08). Heifers receiving a combination of two implants gained faster (P less than .05) from weaning to breeding (6 to 13 mo) than controls or heifers implanted three times. Implants at either 6 or 9 mo increased (P less than .05) precalving pelvic areas (247 vs 241 cm2 and 248 vs 240 cm2 over controls, respectively). Implants did not affect the percent of heifers reaching puberty prior to breeding season. Conception rates in 62 d of breeding were comparable for implanted and control heifers (93 vs 96%), with the exception of heifers receiving implants at both 1 and 6 mo of age (56%). Calf birth weight, dystocia score, cow rebreeding rate and calf weaning weight were not affected by implant treatments. Heifers that received three implants and were fed at a high nutritional level (gained .62 vs .49 kg/d for regular level after weaning) tended (P greater than .10) to reach puberty at a higher rate prior to breeding and to have a higher total conception rate than implanted heifers on the regular nutrition level.  相似文献

Yearling heifer growth data were obtained during 4 yr for 524 heifers allotted to either humid bermuda grass pastures (Overton) or semiarid rangeland (Uvalde). Each year, heifers were allotted on April 15 to four forage availability levels (400 to 2,800 kg of DM per 100 kg of BW at Uvalde and 80 to 260 kg of DM per 100 kg of BW at Overton) maintained by varying the stocking rate monthly until mid-October of each year. Forage availability and yearling heifer characteristics (weight, condition score, and height at hooks, taken on April 15) were treated as continuous variables in regression analyses. Final heifer weight, height, and condition responses to increased forage allowance were related to yearling phenotypes differently for the two locations. Generally, at Overton, forage availability influenced final characteristics to a greater extent than did yearling variables, whereas the trend was the opposite at Uvalde. At Uvalde, the yearling characteristic that had the largest effect on performance was height at hooks. Yearlings with large frames benefited from increased forage allowance by accumulating body fat at a faster rate than those with small frames. In contrast, at Overton, the yearling characteristic that had the largest effect on performance was condition. Fat heifers responded to increased forage availability to gain even greater advantages in fatness at the expense of potential growth in height and, thus, achieved early maturation. Yearling phenotypes were more broadly adapted to arrays of forage availability for humid, improved pastures than for semiarid rangeland.  相似文献

Changes in steer and heifer finishing performance impact the relative competitiveness of the beef industry. This study examined improvements in the finishing performance of steers and heifers from January 1990 to December 1998. Data were obtained from monthly issues of the Focus on Feedlots newsletter. Steer and heifer performance were measured using ADG, feed efficiency, the rate of technological change, and the rate of change in total feeding cost. The rate of technological change measured shifts in the production frontier for steers and heifers. The rate of change in total feeding cost measured shifts in the cost frontier. ADG improved 0.99% per year for steers and 0.96% per year for heifers. Feed efficiency improved 0.60% per year for steers and 0.72% per year for heifers. The rate of technological change averaged 0.58% per year for steers and 1.01% per year for heifers. The positive rates of technological change indicated that the rate of change in BW gain was greater than the rate of change in feed fed. Total feeding cost for heifers increased by 0.63% per year. For steers, the rate of change in total feeding costs was positive, but insignificant. The higher rate of cost increase for heifers was the result of relatively large increases in BW gain for heifers during the study.  相似文献

Reproductive performance and weaning weight of the first calf was determined in 221 Brahman crossbred heifers fed to weigh either 272 (TW1) or 318 kg (TW2) at the start of their first breeding season (target weight). Heifers were divided into light- (below average) and heavyweight (above average) groups on the basis of initial weight. Within each target weight, heifers were fed in three lots. One lot contained lightweight heifers, the second contained heavy heifers and the third was composed of one-half heavy- and one-half lightweight heifers. Heifers were fed for 200 d before the start of the first breeding season. More heifers in TW2 showed estrus and became pregnant in the first 20 d of the breeding season and more were pregnant at the end of the first breeding season. These same differences in reproductive performance were also noted the second year. Each heifer exposed in TW2 weaned 43.4 kg more calf than those in TW1. An average heifer in TW2 was fed 220 kg more corn and 100 kg less hay than a corresponding heifer in TW1. Estrus and pregnancy rate for lightweight heifers in TW1 and TW2 were not improved by sorting and feeding them separately.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine primiparous heifer performance following three different heifer development strategies that were the result of timed nutrient limitation. Two hundred eighty-two spring-born MARC III heifers were weaned at 203+/-1 d of age and 205+/-1 kg BW. The experiment was conducted on two calf crops with 120 heifers born in 1996 and 162 heifers born in 1997. Treatments consisted of different quantities of the same diet being offered for a 205-d period. Heifers in the HIGH treatment were offered 263 kcal ME/(BWkg)0.75 daily. Heifers in the MEDIUM treatment were offered 238 kcal ME/(BWkg)0.75 daily. Heifers in the LOW-HIGH treatment were offered 157 kcal ME/(BWkg)0.75 daily the first 83 d and 277 kcal ME/(BWkg)0.75 daily for the remainder of the 205 d. Treatments differed in total ME intake (P < 0.001); heifers on the HIGH treatment consumed 3,072+/-59 Mcal/heifer, those on the MEDIUM treatment consumed 2,854+/-21 Mcal/heifer, and those on the LOW-HIGH treatment consumed 2,652+/-19 Mcal/ heifer. At the beginning of breeding, heifers on the HIGH treatment were taller at the hips (P = 0.01) and weighed more (P < 0.001) than heifers in the other two treatments. The percentage of heifers that calved expressed as a fraction of the cows exposed did not differ among treatments (89.7%; P = 0.83). The age of heifer at parturition (P = 0.74) and the time from first bull exposure to calving (P = 0.38) did not differ among treatments. Birth weight of calves (P = 0.80) and the calves' weaning weight (P = 0.60) did not differ among the treatments. Calf survival rate on the LOW-HIGH treatment (73%) was lower than that on the moderate treatment (89%; P = 0.007) but did not differ from that on the HIGH treatment (81%; P = 0.26). The second-calf pregnancy rate (92.8%) for cows with a nursing calf at the start of breeding did not differ between treatments (P = 0.83). These findings suggest that as long as heifers are growing and meet a minimal BW before mating, patterns of growth may be altered in the post-weaning period without a decrease in the ability of the heifer to conceive or a decrease in calf growth potential. However, limit-feeding heifers may decrease first-calf survival. These alterations in postweaning gain through monitoring the amount of feed offered can be used to optimize feed resources.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate parameters required for genetic evaluation of Simmental carcass merit using carcass and live animal data. Carcass weight, fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, and marbling score were available from 5,750 steers and 1,504 heifers sired by Simmental bulls. Additionally, yearling ultrasound measurements of fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, and estimated percentage of intramuscular fat were available on Simmental bulls (n = 3,409) and heifers (n = 1,503). An extended pedigree was used to construct the relationship matrix (n = 23,968) linking bulls and heifers with ultrasound data to steers and heifers with carcass data. All data were obtained from the American Simmental Association. No animal had both ultrasound and carcass data. Using an animal model and treating corresponding ultrasound and carcass traits separately, genetic parameters were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood. Heritability estimates for carcass traits were 0.48 +/- 0.06, 0.35 +/- 0.05, 0.46 +/- 0.05, and 0.54 +/- 0.05 for carcass weight, fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, and marbling score, respectively. Heritability estimates for bull (heifer) ultrasound traits were 0.53 +/- 0.07 (0.69 +/- 0.09), 0.37 +/- 0.06 (0.51 +/- 0.09), and 0.47 +/- 0.06 (0.52 +/- 0.09) for fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, and intramuscular fat percentage, respectively. Heritability of weight at scan was 0.47 +/- 0.05. Using a bivariate weight model including scan weight of bulls and heifers with carcass weight of slaughter animals, a genetic correlation of 0.77 +/- 0.10 was obtained. Models for fat thickness, longissimus muscle area, and marbling score were each trivariate, including ultrasound measurements on yearling bulls and heifers, and corresponding carcass traits of slaughter animals. Genetic correlations of carcass fat thickness with bull and heifer ultrasound fat were 0.79 +/- 0.13 and 0.83 +/- 0.12, respectively. Genetic correlations of carcass longissimus muscle area with bull and heifer ultrasound longissimus muscle area were 0.80 +/- 0.11 and 0.54 +/- 0.12, respectively. Genetic correlations of carcass marbling score with bull and heifer ultrasound intramuscular fat percentage were 0.74 +/- 0.11 and 0.69 +/- 0.13, respectively. These results provide the parameter estimates necessary for genetic evaluation of Simmental carcass merit using both data from steer and heifer carcasses, and their ultrasound indicators on yearling bulls and heifers.  相似文献

Dairy replacement heifers given two strategic treatments with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg) three and eight weeks after turnout to spring pastures in northern USA had mean adjusted weight gains (62.3 kg) that were 62 per cent (P less than 0.02) greater than those of control heifers (38.5 kg) at the time of winter housing. Pasture infectivity was consistently higher in control pastures and there was a sixfold difference between treatment (56 L3/kg) and control (358 L3/kg) pastures by the time of winter housing on October 18. This study confirmed earlier studies in northern USA demonstrating the value of two strategic treatments in achieving significant increases in weight gains and hastening the time of first breeding by one to three months at a saving of $40 to $140 per heifer. It was concluded that this dosing strategy is a satisfactory method of parasite control for dairy replacement heifers in northern USA without undue selection for drug resistance.  相似文献

A 3-yr study was conducted with heifers (n = 170) whose dams were used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the effects of late gestation (LG) or early lactation (EL) dam nutrition on subsequent heifer growth and reproduction. In LG, cows received 0.45 kg/d of a 42% CP supplement (PS) or no supplement (NS) while grazing dormant Sandhills range. During EL, cows from each late gestational treatment were fed cool-season grass hay or grazed sub-irrigated meadow. Cows were managed as a single herd for the remainder of the year. Birth date and birth weight of heifer calves were not affected (P > 0.10) by dam nutrition. Meadow grazing and PS increased (P = 0.02; P = 0.07) heifer 205-d BW vs. feeding hay and NS, respectively. Weight at prebreeding and pregnancy diagnosis were greater (P < 0.04) for heifers from PS dams but were unaffected by EL nutrition (P > 0.10). There was no effect (P > 0.10) of LG or EL dam nutrition on age at puberty or the percentage of heifers cycling before breeding. There was no difference (P > 0.10) in pregnancy rates due to EL treatment. Pregnancy rates were greater (P = 0.05) for heifers from PS dams, and a greater proportion (P = 0.005) of heifers from PS dams calved in the first 21 d of the heifers' first calving season. Nutrition of the dams did not influence (P < 0.10) heifers' average calving date, calving difficulty, and calf birth weight during the initial calving season. Weight at the beginning of the second breeding season was greater (P = 0.005) for heifers from PS dams but was not affected by maternal nutrition during EL (P > 0.10). Dam nutrition did not affect (P > 0.10) heifer ADG or G:F ratio. Heifers from PS dams had greater DMI (P = 0.09) and residual feed intake (P = 0.07) than heifers from NS cows if their dams were fed hay during EL but not if their dams grazed meadows. Heifers born to PS cows were heavier at weaning, prebreeding, first pregnancy diagnosis, and before their second breeding season. Heifers from cows that grazed meadows during EL were heavier at weaning but not postweaning. Despite similar ages at puberty and similar proportions of heifers cycling before the breeding season, a greater proportion of heifers from PS dams calved in the first 21 d of the heifers' first calving season, and pregnancy rates were greater compared with heifers from NS dams. Collectively, these results provide evidence of a fetal programming effect on heifer postweaning BW and fertility.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to determine whether sexually experienced bulls would demonstrate a preference (using primarily olfaction) between a heifer in estrus and a heifer in diestrus (luteal phase) when physical contact was denied. In Exp. 1, a heifer in estrus and a heifer in diestrus (n = 18 pairs) were individually enclosed in opposite ends of a pen. During each period (n = 18), three bulls were individually introduced into the pen and allowed 5 min to demonstrate preference between the heifer in estrus and the heifer in diestrus. The total time that a bull spent within 2.5 m of either heifer was used to evaluate his preference. The total time that bulls spent adjacent to the heifer in estrus was not greater (P greater than .05) than the total time that bulls spent adjacent to the heifer in diestrus. In Exp. 2, five bulls were used and were evaluated using the same method as in Exp. 1. In addition, the number of flehmen reactions were recorded for each bull. Six heifers were ovariectomized and each heifer was induced into estrus with one of three doses of estradiol 17 beta (5, 10, and 20 mg) over the 5-wk treatment period. Estradiol 17 beta-treated heifers were always paired with a non-estradiol-treated (control) heifer. The goal of Exp. 2 was to determine whether heifers treated with pharmacological doses of estradiol 17 beta would be preferentially selected from non-estradiol-treated (control) heifers by bulls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Brucellosis vaccination and dehorning were examined for an association with bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection in heifers on a California dairy between April 1984 and June 1987. Between December 1985 and June 1986, weaned heifers were dehorned using the gouge method at the time of brucellosis vaccination. Using logistic regression, the estimated probability for a nondehorned heifer to seroconvert within three months after brucellosis vaccination (0.08) was significantly less than that for heifers dehorned after a noninfected heifer (0.46) or than that for heifers dehorned after an infected heifer (0.85) (p = 0.039 and p less than 0.001, respectively). To evaluate risk of transmission by brucellosis vaccination, which was usually done within one month postweaning, cumulative proportions of heifers remaining uninfected were computed among heifers that did not seroconvert three months after dehorning. Because results of a Cox model analysis indicated that groups of heifers were 6.6 times more at risk of becoming infected if placed in pens holding gouge-dehorned heifers (where prevalence varied between 50 and 70%) (p less than 0.001) than other groups placed in pens without gouge-dehorned heifers (where prevalence varied between 10 and 30%), cumulative proportions of heifers remaining uninfected were computed for each type of group. The cumulative proportion of heifers remaining uninfected from weaning to first calving was 0.60 for the high prevalence group and 0.96 for the low prevalence group. No change in slope of cumulative proportions was observed before and after one month postweaning, suggesting that brucellosis vaccination was not an effective means of transmission.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The objective of this project was to determine the genetic control of conception rate, or pregnancy percentage in Angus beef heifers. Producers from 6 herds in 5 states provided 3,144 heifer records that included breeding dates, breeding contemporary groups, service sires, and pregnancy check information. Two hundred fourteen sires of the heifers were represented; with 104 sires having less than 5 progeny, and 14 sires having greater than 50 progeny. These data were combined with performance and pedigree information, including actual and adjusted birth weights, weaning weights, and yearling weights, from the American Angus Association database. Heifer pregnancy rate varied from 75 to 95% between herds, and from 65 to 100% between sires, with an overall pregnancy rate of 93%, measured as the percentage of heifers pregnant at pregnancy check after the breeding season. Pregnancy was analyzed as a threshold trait with an underlying continuous distribution. A generalized linear animal model, using a relationship matrix, was fitted. This model included the fixed effects of contemporary group, age of dam, and first AI service sire, and the covariates of heifer age at the beginning of breeding, adjusted birth weight, adjusted weaning weight, and adjusted yearling weight. The relationship matrix included 4 generations of pedigree. The heritability of pregnancy and first-service conception rates on the underlying scale was 0.13 +/- 0.07 and 0.03 +/- 0.03, respectively. Estimated breeding values for pregnancy rate on the observed scale ranged from -0.02 to 0.05 for sires of heifers. Including growth traits with pregnancy rate as 2-trait analyses did not change the heritability of pregnancy rate. As expected for a reproductive trait, the heritability of pregnancy rate was low. Because of its low heritability, genetic improvement in fertility by selection on heifer pregnancy rate would be expected to be slow.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of prenatal testosterone treatment in combination with postnatal steroid implantation (Exp. 1) and to assess the effect of time of prenatal testosterone treatment in conjunction with postnatal steroid implantation (Exp. 2) on animal performance and carcass characteristics. In Exp. 1, seventy-six pregnant cows were assigned randomly to a control group or implanted with testosterone propionate (TP) silastic implants between d 40 and 80 of gestation. Half the heifer calves were selected randomly to be implanted with 200 mg TP plus 20 mg estradiol benzoate (EB); the other half of the steer calves were implanted with 200 mg progesterone plus 20 mg EB on d 1 and 85 of the feedlot trial. Daily gain of heifers was increased 10.4% (P less than .08) due to prenatal testosterone treatment (P) and 16.4% (P less than .05) by postnatal steroid implantation (I). Feed efficiency was 12.9% greater (P less than .05) due to P and 9.5% greater (P less than .05) due to I. Prenatal testosterone treatment decreased (P less than .05) kidney, pelvic and heart fat and final yield grade but increased (P less than .05) ribeye area of heifers. Heifers had greater (P less than .07) liver weights per unit of carcass weight due to P. In Exp. 2, one hundred seventy-four pregnant cows were assigned randomly to a control group or implanted with TP silastic implants on d 42, 63, 84 or 105 of gestation. Half the heifer and steer calves were selected randomly to be implanted on d 1 and 112 of the feedlot trial. Time of P caused a quadratic effect (P less than .08) on birth weight of heifers. There was a quadratic effect (P less than .05) of time of P on daily gain and final weight per day of age of heifers. Feed efficiency of heifers was improved (P less than .05) due to P. Postnatal steroid implantation increased (P less than .05) daily gain and feed efficiency of heifers by 9.6% and 8.6%, respectively. No changes were observed in growth performance of steers due to P. Results from these two trials suggest that the combination of prenatal testosterone treatment and postnatal testosterone and estradiol implantation produced an additive improvement of daily gain, feed efficiency and carcass merit of heifers.  相似文献

A heifer born to a cow experimentally infected with Brucella abortus strain 544 and reared in isolation from its birth was found infected. Antibodies appeared when it was 10 months old. The heifer calved normally. Brucella abortus of the same characteristics as strain 544 was recovered from a hygroma and from lymph nodes and udder. Five heifers out of 55 (about 10 per cent) born to infected dams and reared in isolation from their birth were found to be infected.  相似文献

Heifers treated with ivermectin at weaning have been reported to reach puberty at a younger age and lighter weight than untreated heifers. We tested the hypothesis that heifers administered ivermectin would respond with earlier follicular development and a greater LH response to a 1-mg estradiol-17beta challenge (E2C) than untreated heifers. Fall-born Angus heifers (n = 32) were randomly assigned on 284 +/- 9 d of age (215.5 +/- 20.8 kg) to receive ivermectin (IVR) or albendazole (ALB), IVR + ALB, or to remain as untreated controls (CONT). Each group (n = 8) was housed separately in adjacent pens throughout the trial and managed to gain .8 kg/heifer on a ration containing 13.2% CP, 58.8% TDN, and 49.9% DM. The CONT heifers received an additional 2.27 kg/heifer of corn silage and 1.59 kg/heifer of corn daily to maintain ADG at comparable levels. Individual body weight was recorded weekly, and nematode eggs per gram (EPG) of feces were measured every 21 d. Ultrasonography was performed on alternate days starting 2 wk prior to E2C to characterize follicular wave patterns. Follicles were separated into classes (C1 [3 to 5 mm], C2 [6 to 9 mm], and C3 [10 mm]) and sizes (largest [LF], second [SLF], third [TLF], and fourth largest follicles [FLF]). The sizes of the regressing dominant follicle 1 (DF1) and the progressing dominant follicle 2 (DF2) were also determined. Serum concentrations of LH were determined from hourly jugular blood samples collected 8 to 24 h after injection of E2C. The IVR + ALB treatment group had more C3 follicles than ALB and CONT (P < .07). The IVR-treated heifers had larger TLF than ALB and CONT (P < .04). The IVR- and IVR + ALB-treated heifers had larger FLF and DF2 than ALB and CONT (P < .1). Least squares means for DF2 were 9.5 +/- .5, 8.0 +/- .4, 9.5 +/- .3 and 8.3 +/- .3 mm, for IVR, ALB, IVR + ALB and CONT, respectively (P = .02 for treatment effect). The E2C-induced serum LH concentration did not differ with respect to treatment. We conclude that heifers administered IVR display increased follicular development, supporting our earlier investigations regarding reduced age at puberty in heifers treated with IVR near weaning.  相似文献
