Objective – To describe a case of gastrointestinal tract perforation, septic peritonitis and coagulopathy caused by ingestion of multiple magnets in a dog. Case Summary – An 8‐month‐old castrated male Rottweiler, weighing 30.5 kg was presented for evaluation of vomiting and weakness. Abdominal radiography and abdominal ultrasonographic examination identified a metallic foreign object within the gastric lumen, presence of free peritoneal gas, and peritoneal effusion. Septic peritonitis was diagnosed by abdominal fluid analysis. Exploratory celiotomy revealed the presence of an omental abscess, and gastric and colonic perforations. Four magnetic foreign objects were found within the lumen of the perforated stomach. Surgical management including removal of the magnets, abscess debridement and excision, perforation repair, and abdominal drainage combined with intensive medical therapy resulted in complete recovery of this dog. New or Unique Information Provided – This report describes in detail the case management of a dog that developed both gastric and colonic perforations and severe morbidity secondary to ingesting multiple magnets.  相似文献

A 16-month-old spayed female mixed breed dog was presented with a 1-week history of anorexia, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, and difficulty rising. Hematologic evaluation indicated a marked macrocytic hypo-chromic, markedly regenerative anemia. A metallic foreign object in the gastrointestinal tract was identified on abdominal radiographs. Serum zinc concentration was markedly increased.  相似文献

Lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis), an ornamental plant found in many urban settings, was believed responsible for the sudden collapse and death of a one-year-old mixed-breed dog. Postmortem examination revealed C majalis leaf fragments in the small intestine. The dog had gross and histologic lesions consistent with cardiac shock. Because C majalis contains cardiac glycosides that have digitalis-like activity, apparent C majalis intoxication was suspected in this dog on the basis of history, exposure to the plant, clinical signs of disease, postmortem lesions, and evidence of plant parts in the intestinal tract. A toxicologic assessment of excessive exposure to C majalis was based on the aforementioned criteria.  相似文献

This paper reports a case of spontaneous fire ant sting dermatitis in canine. The skin lesions consisted of nonfollicular, grouped pustules in the abdominal region. Several fire ants were found attached to the lesional skin. Histopathological findings included an intraepidermal neutrophilic pustule and predominantly neutrophilic interstitial dermatitis. An extensive area of collagen degeneration was also observed below the epidermal pustule. These clinical and histopathological findings are remarkable similar to those observed in fire ant stings in humans.  相似文献

A 5-year-old Shetland Sheepdog was presented with a history of weakness, ataxia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and occasional seizures. The dog had been treated for 6 months with prednisone for inflammatory bowel disease. A positive titer for Ehrlichia canis was detected 6 months before referral. The initial physical examination revealed a weak, laterally recumbent dog with pale mucous membranes. Neurologic examination revealed multiple neurologic deficits. A complete blood cell count (CBC) revealed normochromic, normocytic, nonregenerative anemia; lymphopenia; thrombocytopenia; and neutrophilic and monocytic leukocytosis. Urinalysis revealed proteinuria, with a specific gravity of 1.045. The dog was unresponsive to treatment and died. At necropsy, there was severe serofibrinous peritonitis and pleuritis, with randomly scattered dark brown necrotic foci present in multiple organs, including liver, spleen, kidney, and pancreatic lymph node. Histologically, there were extensive regions of parenchymal necrosis surrounded by neutrophils admixed with epithelioid macrophages, lymphocytes, and pigmented fungal organisms. Numerous brown, 2 to 6 microm in diameter, septate, branching hyphae, subsequently identified as Ochroconis gallopavum (formerly Dactylaria constricta var. gallopava), were observed.  相似文献

A four-year-old male, neutered Labrador retriever was presented with progressive left hindlimb lameness 10 months following total hip replacement. Radiography revealed changes consistent with infection and culture of joint fluid from the left coxofemoral joint revealed Achromobacter (Alcaligenes) xylosoxidans. The prosthesis was removed. Culture of the acetabular cup confirmed Achromobacter xylosoxidans. Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an uncommon but serious cause of nosocomial epidemics in hospitals for human beings. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of total hip prosthetic infection with Achromobacter xylosoxidans. Little is reported about its pathogenicity in human beings and the authors failed to retrieve any reports of its clinical significance in animals.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever was evaluated for progressive lameness of the left forelimb 21 months after being shot in the elbow with a lead bullet. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination findings were consistent with moderate osteoarthritis of the left elbow joint. Orthogonal radiographic views of the elbow revealed multiple metallic fragments in and around the joint space as well as signs of osteoarthritis. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The elbow joint was evaluated arthroscopically. A lead-based bullet fragment was seen in the lateral synovial compartment and removed in multiple pieces. Excess fibrin and synovium were removed, and microfractures were created in exposed subchondral bone to stimulate neovascularization and fibrocartilage formation. In a follow-up telephone conversation 4 months after surgery, the owner reported a marked improvement in the lameness. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Removal of lead intra-articular foreign bodies may be indicated even if the material is not believed to mechanically interfere with joint motion.  相似文献

Prevotella oralis, an obligate Gram-negative anaerobe, was shown to be the cause of meningitis in a two-year-old crossbreed dog. The dog had a six-week history of lethargy and neck pain. On presentation, the animal was reluctant to walk, had a stiff gait and neck pain on flexion. Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid documented a neutrophilic pleocytosis (7488 cells/microl) and the presence of occasional intracellular bacterial coccobacilli. The aetiological diagnosis was confirmed by routine aerobic and anaerobic culture, and identification of the isolates. This report also reviews the literature of the documented cases of bacterial meningitis in dogs.  相似文献

Endocarditis caused by Corynebacterium sp in a dog   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mitral valve bacterial endocarditis, caused by Corynebacterium sp, was diagnosed in a dog. The bacteria had characteristics unlike those commonly recognized for most species of Corynebacterium. The primary source of bacteremia was suspected to be a pilonidal cyst of the sacrum. The dog was treated with a first-generation cephalosporin for 6 weeks, and the pilonidal cyst was surgically removed. Physical examination 1 year after initial examination revealed no abnormalities other than a cardiac murmur. On echocardiographic examination 1 year after treatment, the vegetative lesion was still present; however, chamber dimensions had returned to normal. Wall thickness and contractility remained increased.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate 55 clinical cases of canine demodicosis and to compare the results of treatment using amitraz (solution), selamectin (spot-on), ivermectin (injection) and cythioate (oral tablets). Data from the 55 cases was collected and evaluated after clinical and microbiological examination. Treatment was selected depending on the severity of demodicosis and compliance of the owner. The cases were followed for 12 months and the status of the patients was grouped on two levels: recovered (58%), or relapsed (42%). Five dogs (9%) were euthanized. The disease was commonly diagnosed in purebred dogs. Demodicosis was more common in dogs under 2 years of age (65%), in males (64%), and in the short-haired breeds (75%). Demodicosis was generalized in 73% of cases, localised in 23% and affected the feet (pododemodicosis) in 4% of cases. Recovery was the highest in dogs between 1 and 2 years of age (73%), and in the localized cases (92%). Nonspecific treatment with glucocorticoids prior to the diagnosis lowered the rate of recovery (4%), but treatment with glucocorticoids for proven atopic dermatitis improved the rate of recovery (41%). All drugs (amitraz, selamectin, cythioate) administered for the localized form were effective (100% recovered). Recovery in generalized demodicosis was 60% using ivermectin, 55% using amitraz, 44% with the combination of amitraz and selamectin (two treatments with amitraz followed by selamectin), and 43% in cases where selamectin was used alone.

Objective – To describe a case of Dieffenbachia ingestion in a dog presented for dysphagia and airway obstruction successfully treated with a temporary tracheostomy and supportive care beyond that reported in the veterinary literature. Case Summary – An 8‐year‐old male neutered Labrador Retriever, weighing 30 kg, was presented with the complaint of choking and gagging. Abdominal radiographs showed that he had a distended stomach full of foreign material and a gastrotomy was performed. After receiving preanesthetic medication, the dog developed inspiratory stridor and during anesthetic induction, marked oropharyngeal swelling complicated tracheal intubation. During surgery a large amount of dog bedding and Dieffenbachia plant material was removed. Because of the severity of the oropharyngeal swelling, the dog required a temporary tracheostomy and treatment for an acute allergic reaction related to the Dieffenbachia ingestion. The patient was discharged after 6 days in the hospital and had no significant complications. New or Unique Information Provided – To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of successful treatment of an airway obstruction related to the toxicity of Dieffenbachia ingestion.  相似文献

Eumycotic mycetoma caused by Pseudallescheria boydii in a dog   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abdominal eumycotic mycetoma caused by Pseudallescheria boydii was diagnosed in a 3-year-old male Siberian Husky. The dog was examined because of weight loss and signs of depression. Initially, pyrexia was the only clinical finding. Antibiotic and corticosteroid treatment was ineffective. Two weeks later, the dog's appetite had decreased, it had vomited a few times, and the caudal portion of the abdomen was sensitive to palpation. Hematologic and serum biochemical abnormalities consisted of anemia, leukocytosis, hypoglycemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperglobulinemia, and high alkaline phosphatase activity. One week later, the dog's condition continued to worsen, and testicular swelling was observed. The dog was castrated. Microscopic examination of specimens obtained at surgery revealed pyogranulomatous periorchitis with mycetoma granules. Ketoconazole treatment was initiated and continued until the dog died one month later. Necropsy revealed multifocal duodenal ulcers, with transmural pyogranulomatous enteritis, pancreatitis, and peritonitis. This case is unique because the etiologic agent apparently entered via the intestinal tract rather than by contamination of an external wound.  相似文献

A case of mycotic endophthalmitis in the dog caused by Candida albicans is presented. The 3-year-old dog had a history of bloody diarrhea 3 months previously. The dog presented with acute signs of unilateral panuveitis. Aqueocentesis, vitreocentesis, and routine blood tests were performed but did not contribute to the diagnosis. The posterior segment could not be visualized because of flare and fibrin. On day 7 ultrasonography showed retinal separation which progressed to vitreous compartmentalization and abscessation by day 14. Three weeks after onset, glaucoma developed and enucleation was performed. Histology revealed the yeast Candida to be the causative agent. Post-enucleation serum Candida antibody titer was 1 : 640 (human threshold 1 : 120), as determined by agglutination test. A relapse of enteric signs 3 months later led to the diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic enteritis. An hematogenous route of infection is suspected.  相似文献

Abstract: A 4‐year‐old female spayed Bichon Frise dog that had been receiving cyclosporine A per os 3 times per week for 2 months to control allergic dermatitis developed lethargy, anorexia, fever, and multiple firm subcutaneous masses. Pyogranulomatous inflammation with branching nonseptate filamentous organisms approximately 2 μm in diameter, presumptively fungal organisms, was diagnosed by cytologic evaluation of fine‐needle aspirates from several masses. A partially acid‐fast actinomycete was cultured from 2 of the masses. The organism was identified as Nocardia abscessus (formerly Nocardia asteroides type 1) based on 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing of samples extracted from cultures and unstained cytologic smears. Immunosuppression caused by long‐term administration of cyclosporine A likely predisposed the dog to disseminated infection. To our knowledge, this is the first report of N. abscessus infection in a dog. This case demonstrates that N. abscessus may be mistaken for a fungal organism based on its cytologic appearance and underscores the importance of using molecular techniques for the diagnosis of suspected fungal diseases.  相似文献
