During a 2 1/2-year period 209 dogs with 218 malignant tumours were examined for skeletal metastases. There were 77 malignant tumours without visceral or skeletal metastases. Twenty-four (17%) of the 141 tumours with visceral metastases also had skeletal metastases. Ninety-eight of these tumours were of epithelial origin, and of these 21 (21.4%) had skeletal metastases. In 14 dogs, more than one bone had a metastatic tumour. The humerus, femur and vertebral column were most frequently involved. The lung was the most frequent site of metastatic tumours; then, in order, the liver, kidney and skeleton. The incidence of primary and secondary bone tumours was similar. Metastatic bone disease in the dog is far more common than is generally realized.  相似文献

Canine mammary tumours (CMTs) are a very heterogeneous group of neoplasms with variable prognosis. Their aggressiveness is mainly due to their ability to invade locally and to metastasize. The degradation of extracellular matrix components is an important determinant of the invasive phenotype. The aims of this study were to analyse by immunohistochemistry and double immunofluorescence the expression of metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP-2) in eight normal canine mammary glands and 118 CMTs (24 benign, 94 malignant) and to investigate relationships with metastatic disease and survival.MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expression was higher in malignant tumours than in normal canine mammary tissue and benign tumours. The main difference between benign and malignant CMTs was the pattern of expression of both molecules: benign tumours presented TIMP-2 and MMP-2 immunoreactivity in the myoepithelial cells lining the basement membrane of tubuloalveolar structures, while malignant tumours showed mainly diffuse expression in neoplastic cells. In malignant tumours, increased TIMP-2 expression was significantly associated with the development of distant metastases, lower overall survival and lower disease-free survival. MMP-2 expression was not significantly associated to any of these parameters. These results suggest that the immunohistochemical expression of TIMP-2 is a useful prognostic factor in CMTs.  相似文献

To explore the expression and clinical importance of the anti-oncogene phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) in canine mammary gland tumours, PTEN expression was compared in 50 cases of canine mammary tumour and four examples of normal mammary tissue using real-time quantitative PCR. PTEN expression was similar in benign mammary tumours and normal mammary tissues (P>0.05), but was lower in malignant tumours than in normal mammary tissues or benign mammary tumours (P<0.001). PTEN expression was also low in the lymph node metastases of malignant mammary tumours. The expression profile of PTEN in malignant mammary tumours compared to those without lymph node metastasis varied significantly. Low-level PETN expression might play an important role in carcinogenesis and the progression of canine mammary tumours, and PTEN protein detection might be useful in evaluating tumour development and prognosis.  相似文献

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Feline 'lung-digit syndrome' describes an unusual pattern of metastasis that is seen with various types of primary lung tumours, particularly bronchial and bronchioalveolar adenocarcinoma. Tumour metastases are found at atypical sites, notably the distal phalanges of the limbs; the weightbearing digits are most frequently affected, and multiple-digit and multiple-limb involvement is common. Often primary lung tumours in cats are not detected because of clinical signs referable to the primary tumour; rather, many cases present with signs referable to distant metastases. Other sites of metastases from feline primary lung tumours include the skin, eyes, skeletal muscle and bone, as well as multiple thoracic and abdominal organs. These lesions are thought to arise from direct arterial embolisation from the tumour. Indeed tumour embolisation to the aortic trifurcation is possible. PATIENT GROUP: Primary lung neoplasms are uncommon in the cat. Older animals are most affected (mean age at presentation 12 years, range 2-20 years). There is no apparent sex or breed predilection. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Feline lung-digit syndrome presents a diagnostic challenge. Typically there is swelling and reddening of the digit, purulent discharge from the nail bed, and dysplasia or fixed exsheathment of the associated nail. While these signs might be suggestive of infection, this could be secondary to a digital metastatic lesion, particularly in a middle-aged or elderly cat. Radiographic evidence of extensive bony lysis of the distal phalanx, which can be trans-articular to the second phalanx, raises the index of clinical suspicion for metastasis of a primary pulmonary tumour. Thoracic radiography is warranted prior to any surgery or digital amputation as the prognosis is generally grave for cats with this syndrome, with a mean survival time of only 58 days after presentation. EVIDENCE BASE: This article reviews the previous literature and case reports of feline lung-digit syndrome and feline primary pulmonary neoplasia in general, discussing the course of this disease and the varying clinical presentations associated with different sites of metastasis.  相似文献

Background: Although B-mode ultrasound is very sensitive for the detection of splenic lesions, its specificity is low. Contrast harmonic imaging is used successfully to differentiate benign from malignant liver lesions in humans and dogs.
Hypothesis: Contrast harmonic imaging could be useful to differentiate benign and malignant splenic lesions in dogs.
Animals: Sixty dogs (clinical patients) with splenic abnormalities detected during abdominal ultrasonography.
Methods: A prospective study was performed with a Philips ATL 5000 unit for contrast pulse inversion harmonic imaging (mechanical index: 0.08, contrast medium: SonoVue). Perfusion was assessed subjectively and quantitatively.
Results: Cytology or histology identified 27 benign (hyperplasia, extramedullary hematopoiesis, hematoma) and 29 malignant (hemangiosarcoma, malignant lymphoma, malignant histiocytosis, mesenchymal tumors without classification, mast cell tumors, and others) lesions and 4 normal spleens. Except for 1 benign nodule, extensive to moderate hypoechogenicity was only seen in malignant lesions during wash-in, at peak enhancement, and during wash-out ( P = .0001, odds ratios: 37.9 [95% CI 4.5–316.5], 66.4 [95% CI 8.0–551.1], and 36.9 [95% CI 4.4–308.4]). Although all but 1 benign lesion enhanced well and were mildly hypo-, iso-, or hyperechoic in comparison with the normal spleen during all blood pool phases, marked enhancement occurred both in benign as well as in malignant splenic lesions. Quantitative perfusion values did not differ significantly between benign and malignant lesions.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Moderate to extensive hypoechogenicity clearly identifies canine splenic malignant lesions. In nodules with marked enhancement, contrast harmonic ultrasound is of limited value and histology is needed.  相似文献

An ovarian teratoma in a 5-year-old bitch with a history of vaginal discharge was removed successfully by ovariohysterectomy. The mass was discovered on abdominal palpation and contained multiple mineralized densities that were visualized radiographically. Histologic examination of the mass confirmed the presence of tissues originating from multiple germ-cell layers, characteristic of a teratoma. Clinical findings in dogs with teratomas include abdominal distention, a palpable abdominal mass, and rarely, evidence of reproductive hormonal activity. These neoplasms are uncommon in the dog, and they may exhibit malignant tendencies, with metastasis developing in approximately 33% of the reported cases. Ovariohysterectomy is the preferred treatment for ovarian teratomas, and this procedure was curative in the dog of this report.  相似文献

Ability to noninvasively differentiate malignant from nonmalignant abdominal masses would aid clinical decision making. The aim of this retrospective, cross‐sectional study was to identify features in dual‐phase computed tomographic (CT) studies that could be used to distinguish malignant from nonmalignant hepatic and splenic masses in dogs. Medical records were searched for dogs that had an abdominal dual‐phase CT examination, a hepatic or splenic mass, and subsequent histopathologic diagnosis. Computed tomographic images for all included dogs were acquired prior to and <30 s (early phase) and >60 s (delayed phase) after intravenous contrast administration. Fifty‐two dogs with 55 masses were studied: 24 hepatic, including 14 (58%) malignant and 10 (42%) non‐malignant; 31 splenic, including 18 (58%) malignant and 13 (42%) nonmalignant. There was substantial overlap in the pre‐ and postcontrast CT features of malignant and nonmalignant hepatic and splenic masses. Regardless of histologic diagnosis, hepatic masses most frequently showed marked, generalized enhancement in early phase images that persisted in the delayed phase. Splenic hemangiosarcoma and nodular hyperplastic lesions most frequently showed marked, generalized enhancement in early phase images that persisted in delayed images whereas most splenic hematomas had slight enhancement in early phase images. All splenic hematomas and 77% of the hemangiosarcomas had contrast accumulation compatible with active hemorrhage. There were no other significant differences in quantitative or categorical CT data between malignant and nonmalignant hepatic or splenic masses. Dual‐phase CT of dogs with hepatic or splenic masses provides limited specific diagnostic information.  相似文献

Focal hepatic and splenic lesions in the dog are common, and approximately half of such lesions are malignant. Both incidentally discovered lesions and lesions in patients with known malignancies represent diagnostic dilemmas. Ultrasound often fails to characterize such lesions adequately. This uncertainty may result in unnecessary splenectomies and liver biopsies for benign lesions or noncurative surgery for advanced-stage malignancies. In humans, ultrasound largely has been supplanted by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the characterization of focal hepatic and splenic lesions. The inherently high soft tissue contrast of MRI allows the differentiation of benign from malignant hepatic and splenic lesions in the human patients. In this prospective study, 35 focal lesions of either the spleen (n = 8) or the liver (n = 27) were characterized by MRI in 23 dogs. Lesions were presumptively classified as malignant or benign on the basis of MRI findings. Imaging results then were correlated with histopathologic (29) or cytologic (6) evaluation of the lesions. The overall accuracy in differentiating malignant from benign lesions was 94% (33 of 35 lesions). The overall sensitivity and specificity were 100% (95% CI, 78-100%) and 90% (95% CI, 68-99%), respectively. MRI classified malignant hepatic lesions as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in all confirmed cases and correctly predicted the histologic grade of 5 HCC lesions. These results suggest that MRI is a useful modality for abdominal imaging in veterinary patients, and MRI accurately differentiated benign from malignant focal hepatic and splenic lesions in this sample of patients.  相似文献

A ureteral sarcoma was diagnosed in a nine-year-old Weimaraner dog with gross haematuria, severe unilateral hydronephrosis, and hydroureter. Treatment consisted of unilateral nephrectomy and ureterectomy. This case was compared with 14 other ureteral tumours reported in the veterinary literature. Only three previous reports concerned a malignant ureteral tumour. Urinary tract neoplasms mainly involve the bladder and the kidney, and more rarely the urethra. The purpose of this paper is to report a rare case of malignant ureteral tumour in a dog.  相似文献

An analysis was made of 17 cases of microscopically proven hepatic and splenic neoplasms, with the objective of describing the ultrasonographic findings and determining how interpretation of these findings contributed to the diagnosis and prognosis of these cases. The ultrasonographic appearance of these tumors ranged from focal, large (6 to 20 cm diameter) mixed hyperechoic/hypoechoic masses to multifocal (0.5 to 2.0 cm diameter) hypoechoic masses. The ultrasonographic appearance was not specific for the microscopic cell-type of the neoplasm. When the combined clinical, hematologic, serum chemical, and ultrasonographic findings were interpreted, neoplasia was always the primary consideration, but microscopic confirmation was mandatory. The uses of ultrasonography in these cases were: (1) to characterize the internal architecture of a mass identified radiographically, (2) to confirm the organ of origin of the mass, (3) to define the extent of disease in or around an affected organ, (4) to evaluate palpable abdominal mass(es) in the presence of poor abdominal radiographic contrast, and (5) to identify previously undetected or unsuspected metastases. Three interpretive errors were found, but only one would have influenced the prognosis for that specific patient.  相似文献

This study demonstrated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography for large-sized splenic hemangiosarcoma. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed the presence of a large-sized soft-tissue mass in the cranial abdomen. Computed tomography showed hypoattenuating mass. The mass was located in contact with liver, spleen and stomach, and the origin of the mass remained ambiguous. The mass was T2-hyperintense and T1-hypointense with mild contrast enhancement. MRI allowed a differentiation between large-sized tumor and neighboring normal structure, and the mass was consequently identified as arising from spleen. These results suggested that MRI might be a useful tool to visualize large-sized splenic tumors and improve the accuracy of diagnosis.  相似文献

The clinical and pathological findings of 28 cases (27 horses, 1 donkey) of equid sinonasal tumours examined at the Edinburgh Veterinary School are presented and include: seven cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC); five adenocarcinomas; three undifferentiated carcinomas; two adenomas; five fibro-osseous and bone tumours; and single cases of ameloblastoma, fibroma, fibrosarcoma, undifferentiated sarcoma, melanoma and lymphosarcoma. The median ages of animals affected with epithelial, and fibro-osseous/bone tumours were 14 and 4 years, respectively. Unilateral purulent or mucopurulent nasal discharge (81% of cases) and gross facial swellings (82% of cases) were the most common presenting signs with sinonasal tumours, with epistaxis recorded in just 23% of cases. Radiology and endoscopy were the most useful ancillary diagnostic techniques. The maxillary area was the most common site of tumour origin, and only three cases were definitively identified as originating in the nasal cavity. Four of the maxillary SCC lesions originated within the nasal cavities or maxillary sinuses, while two originated in the oral cavity. Fourteen of 15 carcinomas, but only two of the 13 remaining tumours, spread to other sites in the head. Only three cases of sinonasal tumour had lymph node metastases, and none had distant metastases. In the long term, surgical treatment with seven malignant tumours was unsuccessful (6 months median survival post-operatively), but was successful with four out of five benign tumours (no regrowth at a median of 4 years post-operatively).  相似文献

A retrospective study was undertaken to characterise the biological behaviour of splenic haemangiosarcoma (HSA) in dogs. Metastatic pattern data for 25 dogs with splenic HSA that were presented for clinical signs relating to splenic lesions (eg, abdominal mass and, or, haemoperitoneum) and had undergone necropsy were analysed. Six of 25 dogs with splenic HSA that were presented for abdominal mass/haemoperitoneum had right atrial HSA. Fifteen of 19 (79 per cent dogs) with splenic HSA associated with abdominal mass/hemoperitoneum without right atrial involvement had disease confined to the peritoneal cavity. The most common metastatic sites in these dogs were liver, omentum and mesentery. Extraperitoneal metastases were seen in four of 19 (21 per cent) dogs without right atrial involvement. Analysis of signalment data of dogs in this series and the literature revealed no differences between dogs with disease confined to the peritoneal cavity and dogs with extraperitoneal metastases. The subjectivity of primary site designation, importance of ante mortem identification of individuals with concurrent right atrial involvement, and need for more aggressive therapy directed at intraperitoneal metastases are discussed.  相似文献

The results of a retrospective survey of tumours and tumour-like lesions encountered in horses in a veterinary practice in south east Queensland between 1956 and 1978 are presented. Forty-two per cent of the lesions were examined histologically. The most commonly occurring neoplasms were the equine sarcoid, papilloma and squamous cell carcinoma of the eye and external genitalia. Neurofibroma was an important problem in the eyelid region. Intra-abdominal tumours were rarely encountered in this series.  相似文献

Current staging of canine mast cell tumours (MCTs) practiced by many veterinarians involves a minimum of lymph node (LN) assessment, abdominal ultrasound and thoracic radiography. Historically, some have advocated buffy coat and bone marrow evaluation. Two hundred and twenty dogs with MCT seen at a referral clinic were staged using LN palpation/cytology, thoracic radiography and abdominal ultrasound. The utility of each method was evaluated by considering prevalence of spread and future behaviour. At presentation, 30.9% of dogs had metastases to the local LN; 6.8% of all the dogs also had distant metastases. No dog had or developed distant metastasis in the absence of LN metastasis. No dog had convincing evidence of pulmonary metastasis. In this series, the local LN was sentinel to metastasis and in the absence of local LN metastasis, the utility of further staging was low. Thoracic radiography was not useful in the staging of canine MCT.  相似文献

A 9-year-old castrated male Portuguese water dog was presented following incomplete excision of a malignant melanoma at the left lip commissure by the referring veterinarian. Physical examination was otherwise unremarkable. The patient was staged using thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, and fine-needle aspirates of the mandibular lymph nodes and spleen. Given the absence of any definitive evidence of metastasis, the malignant melanoma was surgically completely removed. The dog then received four melanoma vaccine doses as an adjuvant therapy and remained clinically healthy for more than 3 months after the last immunization. However, 232 days after the initial discovery of the lip mass, the dog was euthanized due to deterioration and a poor prognosis based on the presence of lung metastases and neoplastic melanocytic pleural effusion. The latter has been rarely reported in dogs, despite the high prevalence of oral malignant melanomas and the tendency of these tumors to metastasize to the lungs.  相似文献

Non-angiomatous-non-lymphomatous sarcomas (NANLs) represent 23%–34% of canine primary splenic sarcomas. Splenic liposarcomas account for 2%–6% of NANLs but myxoid variants are rarely reported and information on their behaviour is fragmentary. An 8-year-old male crossbreed (case 1), a 12-year-old female French bulldog (case 2), and an 11-year-old crossbreed (case 3) underwent splenectomy after the detection of a splenic nodule. Histology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed. Bundles of spindle-to-polygonal cells containing occasional cytoplasmic oil-red-O positive vacuoles embedded in an Alcian blue-positive extracellular matrix were observed. Aggregates of round cells were detected in cases 1 and 3. All tumours were vimentin positive and actin, desmin, Factor VIII, and S100 negative. The TEM evidenced different maturational stages of adipose cells (lipoblasts, intermediate, and undifferentiated). All the cases developed hepatic metastases and were euthanized. Disease free interval was 2 months in cases 1 and 3, and 21 months in case 2. The presence of a neoplastic embolus in case 1 and areas of round cell differentiation in cases 1 and 3 represented the sole prognostic indices.  相似文献

Increased total alkaline phosphatase (TALP) activity in the serum, long noticed in canine mammary tumours among other neoplasms, has not been yet associated with malignancy, osseous transformation of neoplastic tissue or histopathological typing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to correlate this biochemical abnormality with the above-mentioned parameters, in 79 adult to elderly female dogs with mammary neoplasms, without evidence of metastatic or any other disease. Histopathology disclosed that 64 (81%) of these neoplasms were malignant and 15 (19%) benign, belonging to various histological types. Radiology and histopathology revealed the presence of osseous tissue in 18 (22.8%) cases. The malignant neoplasms were subsequently allocated into group A including 46 (74.2%) of epithelial origin and group B with 16 (25.8%) neoplasms of both epithelial and mesenchymal origin ('malignant mixed' tumours). In addition, their benign counterparts were divided into group C (adenomas, fibroadenomas) and group D (benign mixed tumours) that included seven (46.7%) and eight (53.3%) tumours, respectively. Almost 55% of the dogs with malignant and 47% with benign tumours had increased serum-TALP activity. However, no significant difference in serum-TALP activity was found between the dogs with malignant (mean +/- SE: 243.7 +/- 37.4 U/l) and benign (167.9 +/- 38.4 U/l) neoplasms, with (238.9 +/- 45.3 U/l) and without (226.5 +/- 38.3 U/l) osseous transformation, with (298.5 +/- 85.6 U/l) or without (201.2 +/- 30.5 U/l) myoepithelial cell proliferation and with different tumour size (T1/T2: 175.1 +/- 34.9 and T3: 254.5 +/- 42.5 U/l). In histopathological typing, the only difference noticed involved the malignant neoplasms of group A (190.5 +/- 25.5 U/l) compared with group B (378 +/- 124.6 U/l) dogs. The higher increase of serum-TALP activity in 'malignant mixed' tumours could not be attributed to osseous transformation or new ALP isoenzyme production by myoepithelial cells. Increased serum-TALP activity is of no apparent diagnostic (as to tumour type) or prognostic value.  相似文献

Eight cases of feline pancreatic adenocarcinoma and two cases of pancreatic adenoma were reviewed. The adenomas were incidental findings. Most cats with adenocarcinomas had anorexia (75%) and vomiting (63%), while 38% had abdominal pain, a palpable abdominal mass, and/or jaundice. Diagnostic abnormalities included leukocytosis, hyperglycemia, increased alanine aminotransferase activity, poor serosal detail on abdominal radiography, and an abdominal mass effect on ultrasonography. The majority of cats with carcinomas had metastases (mostly to liver, lung, and small intestine), and all were euthanized or died within 7 days of diagnosis. Clinically, feline pancreatic carcinoma may be difficult to distinguish from feline pancreatitis.  相似文献

This is the first report of a metallic foreign body in the spleen of a dog. The animal had abdominal discomfort with a tucked-up abdomen and occasional vomition. Radiography and ultrasonography were used to identify a splenic foreign body which was surgically removed through a ventral midline celiotomy. Migration of the foreign body through the stomach wall was suspected as the most likely cause.  相似文献
