Serum samples from 1120 layers from 56 flocks and 400 pullets from 20 flocks were tested by an indirect sandwich ELISA to investigate the prevalence of antibodies to Histomonas meleagridis in chickens kept in alternative husbandry systems. The overall prevalence of antibodies to H meleagridis in layers was 37.3 per cent, and positive birds were identified in 50 flocks. This was significantly higher than in pullets, where only 8.3 per cent of the birds tested positive. Optical density (OD) values obtained from pullet sera were much lower than the OD values from layers; however, positive birds were detected in half of the pullet flocks. In particular, all birds from an organic pullet flock were found to be positive, with high OD values. Overall, the highest prevalence of positive sera was obtained from birds kept in free-range flocks. Attempts to reisolate live histomonads from birds in 18 layer flocks were unsuccessful.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of beak trimming age on performance criteria, H-L ratio, antibody production, the percentage of spleen and liver and external appearance. The chicks (Barred Rock) were randomly divided into 4 beak-trimming groups (non-trimmed (control), a trim at 1 d (1D), at 10 d (10D) and at 10 wk (10W)), each of 132 chicks. There were 6 replicate cages at beak trimming groups at rearing period. At 18 wk of age a total of 144 pullets were transferred to the layer house, and the pullets were housed at 323 and 646 cm2/hen with 8 and 4 birds per cage in three-deck layer cages. There were a total of 24 replications with 12 replications equally divided between the high and low density cages, and the beak trimmed treatments were randomly and equally divided within each density. As a result of this experiment differences among groups in body weight in rearing phase were disappear in the laying phase. Low feather condition was found in untrimmed hens. H-L ratio in both pullet and laying phase was higher in hens of untrimmed groups. Cage area affected all examined parameters except that body weight, mortality rate, cracked, broken and unshell egg rates, shell breaking, shape index, shell thickness, meat-blood spot rates, spleen and liver percentages, throat injures and antibody production to SRBC.  相似文献

Synthetic methionine (SM) is routinely added to conventional pullet diets to allow for the formulation of balanced diets. Synthetic methionine, however, is not allowed in organic poultry diets. When SM is not used, diets must be formulated to higher CP levels to achieve the required level of methionine. This study compared inclusion of a commonly used organic corn in pullet starter, grower, and developer diets with a new non-genetically modified high methionine (HM) corn. There were no significant differences in BW gain. The average BW for the pullets on the control and HM corn diets was 1,349 and 1,386 g, respectively. Feed was controlled for most of the study; there were no significant differences in feed consumption or feed efficiency. The results of this study, therefore, indicate that this new HM corn variety is a suitable substitute for organically grown conventional corn varieties in organic pullet diets. The inclusion of HM corn eliminates the need for SM in pullet starter, grower, and developer diets fed to floor-reared Bovan Brown pullets.  相似文献

Feather pecking and cannibalism are still major problems in alternative systems for laying hens. Literature and practical experience indicate that unfavourable rearing conditions might be important risk factors for the occurrence of these behavioural disturbances during the laying period.Typical rearing conditions of laying hens from 50 rearing units in Germany and Austria are presented. Obvious risk factors during rearing for feather pecking and cannibalism during the laying period were found. Most flocks were kept under high stocking density (mean: 15 pullets per m' useable area) and some flocks had access to litter only after the second week of life or access to raised perches after the fourth week of life. Plumage condition of pullets and laying hens varied widely in non-beak-trimmed as well as in beak-trimmed flocks. The percentage of pullets with damaged plumage was higher in beak-trimmed than in non-beak-trimmed flocks (medians: 53 % versus 30 %, p = 0,022). In laying hens there was a higher percentage of hens with plumage damage in non-beak-trimmed flocks compared to beak-trimmed flocks (medians: 23 % versus 50 %, p = 0,007). Data analysis will be continued, especially with regard to particular risk factors.  相似文献

A commercially available inactivated Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) bacterin was administered to chickens on a multiple-age farm endemically infected with MG. A total of 3400 MG-free pullets were vaccinated with the MG bacterin at 19 weeks of age, and 4300 unvaccinated pullets served as controls. The vaccinated group became serologically positive by the rapid plate agglutination (RPA) test within 3 weeks, and the unvaccinated group became positive in 7 weeks. The hemagglutination-inhibition test responses were observed at approximately the same time as the RPA in both of the groups. Egg production and mortality through 50 weeks of age did not differ significantly between the two groups. MG was isolated from birds of the vaccinated and control groups near the termination of the study.  相似文献

Antibodies directed toward gram-negative core antigens (GNCAs) have been demonstrated in many mammalian species but to date are unexamined in any avian species. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with phenol-killed whole cell Escherichia coli J5 was used to assess the presence of serum antibodies directed toward GNCAs in chickens. The first experiment consisted of collecting blood samples from randomly selected hens at egg laying ranches in northern California. The ages ranged from several days of age to 77 wk of age. Birds were classified into age groups (hatchling [1 day-4 wk], pullet [4-18 wk], pullet cycle [18-60 wk], and postmolt [>60 wk]) and husbandry style for titer comparison. The geometric mean titer (GMT) for all adult hens regardless of age was 2147. The geometric mean titers were 220, 5691, 2304, and 1776 for hatchlings, pullets, pullet cycle hens, and postmolt hens, respectively. The age group titer trends were similar to those of humans rather than those of farm animals in that the highest titers occurred during "adolescence" (pullets) and titers decreased slightly with maturity. The GMTs were 2870 for hens housed intensively and 1872 for those housed extensively. The second experiment looked at the progression of GNCA titers within individual birds over a 1-yr period. Individual titers increased slightly throughout the study time of the second experiment.  相似文献

1. An experiment was designed to test the hypothesis that delayed sexual maturity in pullets reared on very short (4 h) constant photoperiods might be partly attributable to limitation of food intake and that offering a pelleted feed might circumvent this effect. 2. The factors investigated were 2 strains (Amber Link and Hyline Brown), 3 photoperiods (4, 7 and 10 h) and 2 forms of food (mash throughout rearing or crumbs from 0 to 4 weeks followed by pellets). All 12 combinations of these factors were tested with 14 replications of 18 pullet chicks allocated to each combination. 3. Mean ages at first egg for 4, 7 and 10 h rearing photoperiods were 189, 184 and 162 d respectively. Pullets given the pelleted diet ate 2% less food to 20 weeks but were 6% heavier at that age. However, the pellet-fed birds were 6 d later in mean age at 50% lay. There was no interaction between form of food and photoperiod in the data for age at first egg. 4. It is concluded that constant short photoperiods during rearing cause delayed sexual maturity entirely due to the effect of light on gonadal development and that limitation of food intake is not a factor in this response.  相似文献

The impact of mild hot-blade beak trimming on welfare and performance in 2 strains of White Leghorn pullets was examined. During the pullet phase, 960 pullets were designated to one of 4 trimming treatments: control (untrimmed, C), trimmed at a commercial hatchery (T0d), or trimmed on farm at 10 d (T10d) or 35 d (T35d) of age. During the hen phase, 720 of the original 960 hens were housed in conventional cages at 17 wk of age (6 replications per strain × treatment group) and data were analyzed as a 2 × 4 (performance and beak length data), 2 × 2 (behavior data, blocked by observer) factorial arrangement or a Chi-Squared analysis (beak healing). Total hen-day production tended to be lower for C birds, but hen-housed production did not differ. Feed intake was not affected by trimming treatments, but feed efficiency was poorer for C birds. Treatment did not statistically affect mortality. Cannibalism, although not significantly different among treatments, occurred in C birds only. The C pullets displayed more head/vent pecking, but no differences were noted in adult birds. There was no behavioral or histological evidence of chronic pain or neuroma formation, and healing occurred quicker when trimming occurred at zero or 10 d of age. To conclude, trimming mildly at zero, 10, or 35 d of age caused no long-term effect on welfare or performance, but trimming at younger ages resulted in faster healing.  相似文献

Disseminated Aspergillus flavus infection in broiler breeder pullets   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Increased morbidity and mortality occurred in a 5-wk-old broiler breeder replacement pullet flock. The affected broiler pullet flock was housed on the first floor of a two-story confinement building. Mortality increased to 0.1%/day compared to the flock on the second floor, which had mortality levels of less than 0.01%/day. Clinical signs in the affected chickens included inactivity, decreased response to stimuli, and anorexia. No respiratory or neurologic signs were observed. On necropsy, affected pullets were dehydrated and emaciated and had disseminated variably sized single or multiple heterophilic granulomas that contained intralesional septate and branching fungal hyphae. Lesions were extensive around the base of the heart in the thoracic inlet and in the kidneys. Other affected organs included eyelid, muscle, proventriculus, ventriculus, intestine, liver, spleen, lung, and heart. Aspergillus flavus was cultured from the visceral granulomas. The source of flock exposure to the organism was not determined.  相似文献

An outbreak of fowl pox, which occurred in south-eastern Ontario between July 1988 and April 1989, was investigated in the spring of 1989 to determine factors associated with the spread of the disease. Clinical fowl pox was confirmed on five farms (cases). Twenty-seven farms, out of 35 egg producers with quota from Durham region to Northumberland county, provided information as controls. Bivariate analyses were performed on mail survey data using Fisher's exact test and odds ratios. Although the tests of hypotheses lacked statistical power because of the small number of case farms, and barns, a number of significant associations were found. At the farm level, fowl pox infection was associated with pullets purchased from a particular pullet grower. At the barn level, fowl pox infection was associated with pullets from a particular grower, mixing different groups of pullets, and a trend towards having birds early in the laying period, and higher numbers of birds placed. Fowl pox-infected barns had higher mortality and lower egg production postoutbreak. The results may indicate that the virus enters the laying barn at, or near, the time new birds are placed. Better communication among producers, catch-and-fill crews, and others associated with the egg industry, as well as more complete records of dates, sources, and persons involved with pullet placements, are recommended.  相似文献

The results of two similar experiments, each using 204 pullets in cages, are presented. In each experiment, a type of light commercial hybrid, heavier commercial hybrids and Brown Leghorn×Light Sussex cross‐breds were compared, in factorial design, on diets containing either 65 per cent barley, 55 per cent maize or 35 per cent oats and 15 per cent bran. Individual records of egg production, egg weight, food conversion and body weight were kept for eight 28‐day periods, starting when the pullets were in full production.

There were no significant differences in egg production between diets but in both experiments a significantly improved food conversion ratio was obtained on the high maize diets, which also gave the highest level of energy consumption.

Most breed differences were not significant but in Experiment 1 the crossbreds produced significantly fewer eggs than the hybrids and in Experiment 2 the light hybrids gave a significantly better food conversion ratio than the two heavier types. The crossbred pullets consumed the most energy in both experiments and in Experiment 1 had significantly the worst energetic efficiency of egg production.

There were no significant interactions between type of pullet and type of diet in either experiment. Thus there were no indications that, at the energy levels investigated, favourable effects may be expected from the feeding of higher energy diets to the lighter hybrid type pullet.

The practical significance of feeding a high barley diet is discussed.  相似文献

Reoviruses are an important cause of suboptimum performance in commercial broilers worldwide. Integrators use the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay against the S1133 antigen for monitoring serum of breeders for indicating pullet vaccine success. However, without correlating serology to reovirus challenge, it is difficult to determine whether titers reflect protective immunity. We developed a broiler challenge test against 2 common reovirus isolates (2408 and S1133) to evaluate the efficacy of reovirus pullet vaccine programs. Two reovirus serologic and challenge studies were undertaken using chicks from broiler integrators from the southeastern United States. Breeder flocks, from which the chicks were obtained, received at least 1 live and 2 inactivated reovirus vaccines during their pullet phase. One-day-old progeny were collected from 6 breeder flocks. At 1 d of age, 20 chicks from each broiler flock were bled, and serum was analyzed for antibodies. At 3 to 4 d of age, 20 progeny per flock were challenged with the 2408 reovirus by intratracheal route. At 10 to 14 d of age, another 20 birds per flock were challenged with the S1133 reovirus by footpad. Twenty birds per flock were used as nonchallenged controls. At 3 wk of age, all birds were killed and weighed. Percentage of protection was calculated for each flock based on the absence of gross lesions. Flocks with at least 50% protection were considered well protected. Most flocks were well protected against both viruses. The percentage of protection correlated with day-old enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay titers. Chicks from younger hens had higher titers and the best protection against challenge. Producers, whose hen flocks were monitored herein, were doing a good job of immunizing pullets against reovirus. They are now using reovirus progeny challenge studies along with breeder antibody titers to determine vaccination success of their pullets.  相似文献

In the period from 1985 to 1987, 24 broiler crops (12 houses; one integration and 3 farms) and 9 pullet flocks (9 houses, 4 farms) were examined for parasites. Intestinal lesion scores and the number of parasites in the intestinal lumen (semiquantitative estimation) were recorded, and the Eimeria species determined when possible (broilers crops: 3rd and 5th week, pullet flocks 4th, 8th, 12th and 18th week). Additionally, the quantity of parasites in litter or faecal samples was examined in regular intervals. Clues for economic damage were only found in broiler crops with increased numbers of coccidial oocysts per gram litter in the 5th week of the fattening period. Eimeria tenella and E. acervulina were the dominating species in broiler chickens and also pullets, E. maxima oocysts however were only casual findings. No ectoparasites, helminths or other protozoa than Eimeria were observed. With regard to the intestinal lesions and the quantities of parasites in the intestine no significant differences were seen when comparing selected broiler chicks and birds taken at random. In pullet flocks the examination of random samples was the superior method, because only freshly dead bodies, collected in insufficient numbers, were suitable for diagnostics. In 3 broiler crops and one flock of replacement pullets kept on a wired floor no Eimeria were diagnosed.  相似文献

Eight 22-week-old broiler breeder replacements were presented from a flock experiencing a mild mortality problem. Approximately 2-3% of the birds were not getting onto the slats to eat or drink. The birds had been reared in dark-out houses under an experimental lighting schedule. Upon examination, several birds appeared blind or partially blind; others exhibited a photophobic response. Two birds lacked a unilateral menace reflex. No other gross abnormalities or lesions were noted. Histopathologic sections of the eyes revealed retinal degeneration and detachment with early degenerative lesions in one lens. The breeder flock came into production normally but peaked below average. Light intensity in the pullet house was measured at 0.3 footcandles (3.2 lux). Although the lighting program under which the pullets were grown is suspect, the etiology of the disorder remains unclear.

Layer chickens on a commercial started pullet farm were vaccinated once at 31 to 52 days of age by drinking water or aerosol with live V4 Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine. Flockmates which had been rehoused in laboratory isolation pens shortly beforehand were similarly vaccinated. Samples of birds were bled at intervals and the serums tested for haemagglutination inhibiting antibody to NDV. Log2 mean titres of up to 4.88 and assumed protection levels (based on the percentage of birds with log2 titres of 4 or greater) of up to 81%, were obtained in the field trials within 4 weeks of vaccination. A subsequent laboratory trial further compared the response of different breeds of chicken to different routes of vaccination. Differences were observed between breeds, routes of vaccination, and parallel field and laboratory trials. The results show that this V4 vaccine can produce an adequate serological response following mass vaccination of Australian layer pullets housed under commercial conditions, and that care should be exercised in extrapolating results obtained under laboratory conditions.  相似文献

The immunity state after vaccination against Marek's disease (MD) was studied in three multiplier flocks of laying fowl (MFL), five multiplier flocks of broiler fowl (MFB), and one commercial layer flock (CLF). The occurrence and average titres of post-vaccination viraemia in the selected sets of chickens from these flocks, examined at the age of three or twenty weeks, were used as the immunity criterion. The development of post-vaccination viraemia, following the administration of the MARVAK vaccine at the doses of 100 and 1000 PFU per bird in the HX-SL and Shaver layer hybrids, was examined under laboratory conditions at the same time. In the group of birds examined in the third week of age and coming from the MFL vaccinated with the recommended MARVAK vaccine (dose (100 PFU per bird), 64.3% of the chicks were viraemic, the average viraemia titre being 12 PFU/10(7) leucocytes. After the administration of a four-fold vaccine dose, 57.1% of the chicks were viraemic, the average titre being 3.2 PFU/10(7) leucocytes. After the administration of a ten-fold dose of MARVAK vaccine, 80% of the chicks were viraemic and the average titre of viraemia was 8 PFU/10(7) leucocytes. In the MFB vaccinated with the recommended dose of the MARVAK vaccine, the percentage of viraemic chickens was 48.3% and the average titre of viraemia was 6.5 PFU/10(7) leucocytes. In the pullets examined at the age of 20 weeks the number of viraemic birds ranged from 20 to 50% and the average viraemia titres were from 3.8 to 13.1 PFU/10(7) leucocytes. In the flock affected by acute MD, no post-vaccination viraemia was found in the clinically diseases pullets. In the chickens of the HX-SL line vaccinated with the recommended MARVAK vaccine dose, viraemia culminated in the third week after vaccination (31.5 PFU/10(7) leucocytes), and after the use of the dose ten times as high as the recommended one the culmination came a week later (47 PFU/10(7) leucocytes). In the Shaver chicks vaccinated with the recommended dose or with the ten-fold dose of the MARVAK vaccine, the post-vaccination viraemia culminated in the fourth week after vaccination (94.9 and 116.8 PFU/10(7) leucocytes). The post-vaccination precipitation antibodies were first detected in the eighth week after vaccination.  相似文献

1. Lohmann White and Lohmann Brown egg-type hybrids were reared on 6-, 8-, 10- or 12-h photoperiods, transferred to 12.5 h at 18 weeks and then given weekly increments to reach 14 h at 21 weeks. In a second experiment, Lohmann White pullets from the same rearing facility were transferred abruptly to 14 h at 18 weeks. 2. Body weight gain and feed intake to 6 and 18 weeks were positively correlated with rearing photoperiod in both breeds. Mortality to 18 weeks was unaffected. 3. Whether the photoperiod was increased abruptly or in a series of increments, Lohmann White pullets reared on 6 or 8 h matured 4 to 6 d later than pullets reared on 10 or 12 h. Rearing day-length had little effect on sexual maturity in Lohmann Brown pullets. 4. In both genotypes and each experiment, egg numbers, egg weight and shell strength increased with rearing photoperiod. Feed intake in the laying period was not significantly affected by rearing day-length, but a meta-analysis of all data showed a significant, though small, increase in adult feed intake with rearing photoperiod. Despite Lohmann White birds reared on 6 and 8 h having lower body weights throughout the laying period, they had larger body weight gains between 18 and 70 weeks than those reared on 10 or 12 h. There were no clear effects of rearing photoperiod on albumen height or mortality. 5. The heavier eggs and stronger shells of the birds reared on the longer day-lengths were correlated with heavier body weights at 18 weeks, and the superior egg numbers and higher feed intake were associated with age at sexual maturity.  相似文献

Pullets that were fed diets containing 0.53 per cent and 0.42 per cent lysine grew at a slower rate and matured later than those that were given adequate amount of lysine. The latter pullets converted their food more efficiently than did the restricted pullets with the exception of the group fed the ration containing 0.53 per cent lysine for the first 12 weeks. The restricted pullets consumed less food during the growing period. A smaller bird was produced on less food. The restricted pullets were also lighter than the control pullets at the end of the laying season. A saving in food costs is indicated because the smaller hen would require less food for maintenance.

There was a higher mortality in the pullets fed a ration containing 0.53 per cent lysine during the growing period. The mortality in the group fed the ration containing 0.42 per cent lysine from 7 to 22 weeks of age was the same as that of the control. There were no differences in mortality during the laying season that could be related to methods of rearing the pullets.

During the laying season, the highest rate of lay was obtained from hens which had been fed the ration containing 0.42 per cent lysine from 7 to 22 weeks of age. Hens fed on the ration containing 0.53 per cent lysine from o to 4, 8 or 12 weeks of age showed no improvement in rate of lay as compared with controls.

Hens fed the ration containing 0.42 per cent lysine from 7 to 22 weeks laid fewer small eggs at the beginning of the laying season than did hens receiving adequate amounts of lysine throughout or fed the ration containing 0.53 per cent lysine from o to 4, 8 or 12 weeks. The hens fed the latter ration laid smaller eggs throughout the laying season.

No differences were found between the fertility, hatchability or embryonic mortality of eggs obtained from hens fed on lysine deficient diets during growth and those fed on diets adequate in lysine.  相似文献

1. The amino acid requirements of laying type pullets during the growing period can be estimated by measuring the growth of different components of the body and making use of nutritional constants that define the amount of each amino acid that is required for the production of the tissues being formed.

2. In this experiment, carcase analyses of each of three breeds of pullets were conducted at weekly intervals throughout the growth of the pullets, to 18 weeks of age. Measurements were made of body weight, gut‐fill and feather weight, and chemical analyses consisted of water, protein, lipid and ash measurements of both the body and the feathers. Each age group comprised 10 birds of each breed.

3. Gompertz functions accurately estimated the growth of both body protein and feather protein, to 18 weeks of age, from which the rate of growth of these two components of the body could be estimated. The mature weight of pullets was overestimated by the Gompertz growth curve, which may indicate that a pullet ceases to increase in body protein content once sexual maturity has been reached.

4. Using allometric relationships between the chemical components of the body and of feathers, all the components of growth could be estimated from the growth of body protein and feather protein. These components were then added together to determine the growth rate of the body as a whole.

5. The daily amino acid requirements for 4 functions were calculated, namely, those for the maintenance of body protein and feather protein, and for the gain in body protein and feather protein. These requirements were then summed to determine the requirement of pullets on each day of the growing period.

6. Using the ‘effective energy’ system, the amount of energy required by these pullets was calculated for each day of the growing period, from which the desired daily food intake of the pullets could be predicted. By dividing the amino acid requirement by this daily food intake it was possible to determine the concentration of amino acids that would be needed in the diet in order to meet the requirements of a pullet.

7. The results indicate that the ratio between the requirement for lysine and for methionine and cysteine changes dramatically during the growing period, negating the concept of a fixed ratio between all the amino acids during growth.

8. The above process is the first step in determining the optimal feeding programme for a population of pullets of a given genotype. The constraining effects, of the diet being offered and of the environment in which the pullets are housed, on the food intake and growth rate of each pullet have to be estimated, and such a theory can then be expanded to include all the individuals in the population. Only by the use: of simulation models can all these constraining effects be considered simultaneously.  相似文献
