A 1-year-old Thoroughbred filly was presented to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals with a 10-day history of fever, diarrhea, inappetance, and hypodipsia. Clinical pathology abnormalities found by the referring veterinarian included erythrocytosis, hyperproteinemia, and increased serum gamma-glutamyltransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activities. At Cornell University, the laboratory abnormalities were confirmed and also included thrombocytosis and hypoglycemia. Erythrocytosis persisted despite vigorous fluid therapy. Ultrasound examination revealed an extremely enlarged liver with abnormal echogenicity and a 21 x 25-cm hepatic mass with varied echogenicity. Imprints of an ultrasound-guided biopsy of the mass revealed a neoplastic epithelial population of uncertain origin, although the cells did not resemble hepatocytes. Together with the presenting signs, signalment, ultrasonographic findings, and persistent erythrocytosis, the cytologic findings were considered to be most consistent with hepatoblastoma. Histopathologic examination of the mass at necropsy confirmed the diagnosis and findings also included bone marrow erythroid hyperplasia. Serum erythropoietin concentration was 28.0 mU/mL (reference interval 1.0-11.8 mU/mL), supporting erythropoietin production by the tumor and secondary inappropriate erythrocytosis. To our knowledge, this report is the first to document secondary erythrocytosis with increased erythropoietin concentration in a horse with hepatoblastoma, and also the first to describe the cytopathologic features of this rare tumor.  相似文献

A 10-month-old Thoroughbred filly was presented with a 2-month history of recurrent fever and pleural effusion. Major clinical findings were pyrexia and congested mucous membranes. Clinical pathology tests revealed an erythrocytosis, hyperfibrinogenaemia and hyperglobulinaemia. Pleural fluid was seen on ultrasonographic examination of the thorax and analysis of a thoracocentesis sample indicated a lymphocytic, modified transudate. A transtracheal aspirate was normal. The erythrocytosis persisted despite IV fluid therapy. Arterial blood gas analysis and bone marrow aspirate were normal. These findings were indicative of secondary inappropriate erythrocytosis. Ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen showed a large encapsulated heterogeneous mass in the left lobe of the liver. Histopathological evaluation of a biopsy of the mass was indicative of a hepatic carcinoma. The filly was euthanased and necropsy confirmed the presence of a hepatic tumour with no evidence of systemic metastasis. Further histopathological evaluation confirmed the tumour to be an embryonal macrotrabecular epithelial-type hepatoblastoma, a type of hepatoblastoma that has not previously been reported in a horse.  相似文献

A 12‐hours‐old Paint filly was examined because of weakness and dull mentation after birth. Despite IV administered dextrose, the foal remained persistently hypoglycemic with increase in serum activity of muscle and liver enzymes. A postmortem diagnosis of lipid myopathy most similar to multiple acyl‐CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) was confirmed by findings of myofiber lipid accumulation, elevated urine organic acids, and serum free acylcarnitines with respect to control foals. This report details a case of equine neonatal lipid storage myopathy with many biochemical characteristics of MADD. Lipid storage myopathies should be included as a differential diagnosis in foals with persistent weakness and hypoglycemia.  相似文献

Hypoglycemia associated with nonislet cell tumor was found in 13 dogs. In each dog, clinical signs were related directly to adrenergic and neuroglucopenic effects of hypoglycemia and included collapsing episodes, tremors, restlessness, weakness, and grand mal seizures that were responsive to glucose administration. Eight of the dogs had hepatocellular carcinoma; surgical resection of the tumor achieved remission of clinical signs in 3 of these dogs. Other hepatic tumors associated with hypoglycemia included leiomyosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma involving solitary lobes of the liver. Nonhepatic tumors included splenic hemangiosarcoma, diffuse metastatic melanoma, and salivary gland adenocarcinoma.  相似文献

A functional, insulin-secreting pancreatic (islet cell) carcinoma was diagnosed in a 17-year-old male Siamese cat. Diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical signs (i.e., seizures and stupor) that resolved temporarily after correction of hypoglycemia with feeding or intravenous administration of glucose, the finding of an inappropriately increased serum insulin concentration in the face of hypoglycemia, and prolonged resolution of hypoglycemia after surgical removal of the tumor. Primary islet cell tumor of the pancreas was confirmed by biopsy. The cat died 18 months later, and necropsy revealed metastases to regional lymph nodes and liver. Specimens of the tumor and metastatic lesions both stained positively for insulin.  相似文献

A 2.5-year-old female Thoroughbred was examined because of lethargy, anorexia, and weight loss. Analysis of a CBC revealed erythrocytosis and an increase in PCV. Serum biochemical analysis revealed increases in activities of several hepatic enzymes. Ultrasonography revealed hepatomegaly and a heterogeneous appearance of the hepatic parenchyma. The horse did not improve despite supportive care, and it was euthanatized. Necropsy revealed numerous raised white to gray foci in the liver. Histologically, these foci consisted of neoplastic cells that resembled fetal hepatocytes, embryonal-type cells, and cells with features intermediate between those 2 cell types. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that hepatocytes stained strongly with anti-alpha-fetoprotein. On the basis of these results, hepatoblastoma was diagnosed. Diagnosis of hepatoblastoma is difficult, because it can appear histologically similar to other hepatic tumors, such as hepatocellular carcinomas. Definitive diagnosis requires histologic evaluation of tumor architecture and cell morphology. Immunohistochemical staining for alpha-fetoprotein in tumor cells may serve as a tumor marker but is not pathognomonic of hepatoblastoma. Paraneoplastic syndromes, such as erythrocytosis, can accompany hepatoblastoma. The prognosis for horses with hepatoblastoma is grave.  相似文献

A dog histopathologically diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) showed very high serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. A supernatant of ascitic fluid and tumor tissue extracted from the dog also showed much higher ALP activity than normal. ALP isoenzyme analysis of samples was performed using polyacrylamide gel disk electrophoresis, and a wide, broad abnormal band was observed. By various treatments, the abnormal band showed thermostability, which is a characteristic of tumor-associated ALP that has only been reported in humans. The thermostable ALP isoenzyme was not found in sera from 39 dogs with several types of tumor that originated from the liver, except for HCC, nor was it found in 10 dogs with hepatic diseases that did not include hepatic tumors. The thermostable ALP isoenzyme seemed to be associated with canine HCC.  相似文献

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a frequently reported neoplasm in the horse. However, oral forms are uncommon and represent only 7% of all SCC. A literature review reveals a total of 13 cases of oral SCC with no apparent sex or breed predisposition but predominantly adult and old horses, mean age 16.5 years. This case report describes a 3.5-year-old pony filly that was presented for investigation of a mandibular fistula of 3 weeks' duration. The clinical and histopathological findings of mandibular squamous cell carcinoma in this filly are described in detail.  相似文献

Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) values were measured in hepatic diseased dogs with or without tumor and non-hepatic tumor bearing dogs by a sandwich ELISA using anti-dog AFP antiserum. Serum AFP values were less than 70 ng/ml in clinically healthy dogs. The values in dogs with hepatocellular carcinoma were higher than 1,400 ng/ml in 7 of 9 dogs, wherever those in two dogs with cholangiocarcinoma were in the normal range. Serum AFP values in hepatic diseased dogs without tumor were also high, however, the values were below 500 ng/ml in 90% of the dogs. In non-hepatic tumor dogs, serum AFP values were less than 500 ng/ml in 76% of the dogs. In the surgically removal cases with hepatocellular carcinoma, serum AFP values rapidly decreased. These results suggested that the sandwich ELISA using anti-dog AFP antiserum was an available method for diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in dogs.  相似文献

Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentration was detected by use of 2 commercially available kits containing antibodies to human AFP--a radioimmunoassay and an enzymetric test. Using neonatal canine serum (a source high in AFP), it was determined that reagents from both kits were able to bind to canine AFP, but a significant difference was detected in AFP concentration. The enzymetric test was superior in detecting canine AFP. Sera from dogs were classified into 6 groups: from dogs with primary hepatic tumors only (group 1); from dogs with primary hepatic tumors and other tumors (group 2); from dogs with normal liver but with other types of neoplasia (group 3); from dogs with nonneoplastic hepatic disease and tumors originating in other organs (group 4); from dogs with nonneoplastic hepatic disease only (group 5); and from clinically normal dogs (group 6). Serum biochemical determinations (alkaline phosphatase, alanine transaminase, albumin, total protein, total bilirubin, and serum bile acids) and values from the 2 AFP assays were obtained for all dogs. Serum AFP concentration detected by the enzymetric test was significantly higher in dogs with hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Values greater than 250 ng/ml were detected in 5 of 9 dogs with cholangiocarcinoma and in 3 of 4 dogs with hepatocellular carcinoma. High serum AFP concentration also was indicative of liver involvement in 2 of 3 dogs with primary hepatic lymphosarcoma; 2 dogs had values greater than 225 ng/ml. Serum AFP concentration in dogs with other types of hepatic tumors was less than 250 ng/ml, and serum AFP concentration could not be correlated with such tumors.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

BackgroundHepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary hepatic malignancy in humans and dogs. Several differentially expressed molecules have been studied and reported in human hepatocellular carcinoma and non-neoplastic liver lesions. However, studies on the features of canine hepatocellular carcinoma are limited, especially related to the differential characteristics of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions.ObjectivesThe study''s objective was 1) to examine and evaluate the expression of arginase-1, P-glycoprotein, and cytokeratin 19 in canine liver tissues and 2) to investigate the differential features of hepatocellular carcinomas, liver tissue with non-neoplastic lesions, and paracancerous liver tissues in dogs.MethodsThe expression levels of three markers underwent immunohistochemical analysis in 40 non-neoplastic liver tissues, 32 hepatocellular carcinoma tissues, and 11 paracancerous liver tissues. Scoring of each marker was performed semi-quantitatively.ResultsArginase-1 and P-glycoprotein were significantly downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma, compared with hepatic tissues with non-neoplastic diseases (p < 0.001). Expression levels of arginase-1 and P-glycoprotein were also significantly lower in hepatocellular carcinoma than in paracancerous liver tissues (arginase-1, p = 0.0195; P-glycoprotein, p = 0.047). Few cytokeratin 19-positive hepatocytes were detected and only in one hepatocellular carcinoma and one cirrhotic liver sample.ConclusionsThe results of this study suggest that downregulation of arginase-1 and P-glycoprotein is a feature of canine hepatocellular carcinoma; thus, those markers are potential candidates for use in differentiating hepatocellular carcinomas from non-neoplastic liver lesions in dogs.  相似文献

A 6-year-old intact female Labrador Retriever had diabetes mellitus, which had been difficult to control with insulin. The dog also had a solid ductal mammary carcinoma with very rapid growth, which was temporally related to onset of hypoglycemia. Eight months after initial diagnosis of diabetes, the dog had a hypoglycemic crisis. Insulin administration was stopped and serum glucose concentration returned to normal. Three months after discontinuing insulin, another hypoglycemic crisis occurred. During subsequent months, serum glucose concentrations remained at life-threatening levels (1.64-2.12 mmol/L, reference interval 4.44-6.66 mmol/L) simultaneously with an increase in the size of the mammary tumor, which reached a diameter of about 16 cm. At the time of surgery for removal of the tumor serum glucose concentration was 2.20 mmol/L and was then monitored every 3 hours after excision of the tumor. The glucose concentration continued to rise and reached 9.99 mmol/L 12 hours after the removal of the mammary tumor. Immunohistochemical staining demonstrated expression of insulin growth factor-2 by tumor cells, which apparently had caused the hypoglycemia during tumor growth even in a diabetic dog. Hyperglycemia associated with diabetes was pronounced after excision of the tumor and had been masked by the paraneoplastic effect of the tumor.  相似文献

A 25-month-old Chihuahua dog with no clinical signs was evaluated for high serum liver enzymes. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a mass in the left hepatic medial lobe. The histological diagnosis reached using resected tissues was hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To the authors’ knowledge, this is the youngest dog diagnosed with HCC.  相似文献

A transitional type of combined hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinoma developed in a 12-year-old male Yorkshire terrier dog. The tumor was histologically composed of both hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocellular carcinoma components, and both elements were closely intermingled. Intraluminal mucin accumulation in cytokeratin-positive tubular/glandular structures was observed within the cholangiocellular carcinoma components and this feature was useful histological marker for a differential diagnosis between combined hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinoma and a pseudoglandular type of hepatocellular carcinoma. This primary hepatic tumor is extremely rare in dogs.  相似文献

A 10-year-old male beagle was referred to us with seizure related to hypoglycemia and a large intraabdominal mass. Based on various types of imaging and a laparoscopic biopsy, the intraabdominal mass was diagnosed as a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of the quadrate lobe. The hypoglycemia was suspected to be associated with the HCC. After lobectomy of the quadrate lobe was performed, blood glucose levels continued to increase to higher than normal values and sugar was detected in the urine. The dog was diagnosed as diabetes mellitus (DM) and was treated with insulin for over two years after the surgery.  相似文献

A 2-year-old Arabian filly was referred for evaluation of a serosanguineous vaginal discharge. Palpation per rectum revealed a large, fluid-filled uterus and a uterine mass. The filly developed septic metritis and secondary laminitis as a result of torsion and necrosis of a pedunculated uterine mass. Ovariohysterectomy was performed. The entire cervix was removed with the uterus. Gross examination of the excised uterus revealed 3 intraluminal masses. Histologic evaluation identified the tumors as fibroleiomyoma. The filly recovered completely, and there was no recurrence of the tumor.  相似文献

A 10-year-old golden retriever with a 3-year history of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was presented with recurring episodes of hypoglycemia and seizures. A presumptive diagnosis of an insulinoma was made based on hypoglycemia with concurrent endogenous hyperinsulinemia and unremarkable radiographic and ultrasonographic images of the chest and abdomen. A beta cell carcinoma of the pancreas with metastasis to the liver and a mesenteric lymph node was confirmed by surgery and histopathology.  相似文献

Immunostaining with monoclonal antibody (MoAb) hepatocyte paraffin 1 (Hep Par 1) and an MoAb to cytokeratin 7 (CK7) was performed on 105 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded canine hyperplastic and neoplastic hepatic lesions. Hep Par 1 was detected in 12/12 hyperplastic nodules, 17/17 hepatocellular adenomas, and 37/40 hepatocellular carcinomas. The staining was disseminated, granular, and cytoplasmic. This antibody did not react with normal or neoplastic biliary epithelium. Other hepatic tumors or tumors metastatic to the liver did not bind Hep Par 1 except one metastatic intestinal carcinoma. MoAb to CK 7 stained all hyperplastic biliary epithelium and benign cholangiocellular tumors (5/5) and 14/18 cholangiocellular carcinomas. One hepatocellular carcinoma had cells positive for both Hep Par 1 and CK 7. Liver was the only normal tissue tested that reacted with MoAb Hep Par 1. Only five nonhepatic tumors (one adrenocortical carcinoma, one interstitial cell tumor of the testis, one melanoma, and two salivary adenocarcinomas) of 277 tumors tested had focal/multifocal staining for Hep Par 1. Prolonged fixation did not alter the staining with Hep Par 1. We conclude that Hep Par 1 is a specific and sensitive marker for canine hepatocellular tumors and allows distinction between hepatocellular and biliary neoplasms.  相似文献

Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentrations were measured before and after surgical removal of tumor masses in four dogs with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Localization of AFP was also examined immunohistochemically in tumor tissues. In three cases, the serum AFP concentration was 10 to 20 times higher than that of normal dogs. One to two months after surgery, the serum AFP concentration had decreased to normal range. AFP was localized in the tumor tissues in these three cases. One case, which had a low serum AFP, did not show AFP localization in tumor tissue.  相似文献
