1. Turkey females were fed ad libitum or restricted from 6 weeks of age to achieve mean body weights of 0.6 of ad libitum fed birds on photostimulation at 18, 24 or 30 weeks of age. Body weight, food intake, egg production and hatchability were recorded to 54 weeks of age. 2. Restricted turkeys were fed ad libitum after first egg or 36 weeks of age. Food intake after 30 weeks of age averaged 170 g/bird/d and was similar for all treatments. At 54 weeks of age, restricted turkeys photostimulated at 24 and 30 weeks were not as heavy as turkeys photostimulated at 18 weeks and ad libitum fed turkeys. 3. A large proportion of restricted turkeys photostimulated at 18 weeks of age did not commence lay until 30 to 40 weeks and a significant number of restricted birds photostimulated at 24 weeks had short laying cycles. Restricted birds photostimulated at 30 weeks came into lay and showed similar persistency of lay to ad libitum fed turkeys. 4. Ad libitum fed turkeys laid 115.0, 122.0 and 101.0 and restricted turkeys 92.4, 99.5 and 103.4 eggs when photostimulated at 18, 24 and 30 weeks, respectively. The number of non-settable eggs was lower in restricted compared with ad libitum fed turkeys and declined with age at photostimulation. 5. Egg size at the end of the experiment was similar for ad libitum fed turkeys and restricted birds photostimulated at 18 weeks but was 2.3 g lower for restricted birds photostimulated at 24 and 30 weeks of age. 6. Hatchability was higher, and the proportion of second quality poults was lower with eggs from restricted turkeys. The mean numbers of poults hatched were 59.9, 75.1 and 66.0 for ad libitum fed and 71.7, 65.7 and 79.4 for restricted turkeys photostimulated at 18, 24 and 30 weeks of age. 相似文献

1. Yellow follicle numbers when the first egg was laid were 6.3, 9.0 and 12.4 for ad libitum reared Leghorns, sex-linked Dwarf (AL Dwarf) and Normal broiler breeders respectively. Multiple ovulation resulted in low egg production and a high proportion of defective egg shells in AL Dwarf and Normal broiler breeders during early lay. 2. Restricting the growth of broiler breeders during rearing by restricting food intake (R Dwarfs) reduced the number of yellow follicles to 6.8 and increased the rate of lay. 3. Atretic yellow follicles were common among broiler breeders but not in Leghorns or R Dwarfs when the first egg was laid. 4. Poor egg production in older broiler breeders was caused by birds with few or no developing yellow follicles, atresia in yellow follicles and the continued occurrence of multiple ovulations. 5. There was no relationship between the number of yellow follicles and the number of white follicles less than 5 mm diameter but atresia in white follicles 2 to less than 5 mm was negatively related to the number of yellow follicles. 7. No relationship was observed between abdominal fat weight and yellow follicle number, though birds which ate more had more yellow follicles. 8.The sex-linked dwarfing gene dw was associated with increased atresia among the white follicles and low numbers of yellow follicles compared with the Normal DW broiler breeder genotype. 相似文献

1. Ovarian function was assessed at first egg and at 44 and 54 weeks of age in traditional turkeys and in a male-line fed ad libitum or restricted to 0.5 of ad libitum during rearing. Egg production was recorded daily and fertility and hatchability were determined at 2 ages. 2. Age at sexual maturity did not differ between the 3 treatments. 3. The number of follicles at first egg in the male line averaged 16.3 compared with 8.9 in traditional turkeys. Food restriction in the male line decreased the number of yellow follicles to 14.6 at first egg and restricted birds were largely in a non-reproductive state from 44 to 54 weeks of age. 4. The total number of recorded ovipositions to 54 weeks of age in male line fed ad libitum or restricted and traditional turkeys respectively were 40.1, 25.2 and 70.7; comparable productions of normal shelled eggs were 28, 20 and 66.3. 5. There were no differences between treatments in fertility after a single insemination at 2 different ages. Hatch of fertiles after the first inseminations were 71.4, 45.5 and 90.3 respectively for male line fed ad libitum or restricted and traditional turkeys. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships between chewing behavior, digestibility, and digesta passage kinetics in steers fed oat hay at restricted and ad libitum intakes. Four Hereford steers, with an initial average BW of 136 kg, were used in an experiment conducted as a balanced 4 × 4 Latin square with 4 treatments (levels of intake) and 4 periods. Animals were fed lopsided oat hay (Avena strigosa Schreb.) at 4 levels of intake (as a percentage of BW): 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and ad libitum. Digestibility, chewing behavior, and digesta passage kinetic measurements were recorded during the experimental period. Chewing rates during eating and ruminating [(chews?min(-1))/g of DMI?kg(-1) of BW?d(-1)] decreased (P = 0.018 and P = 0.032, respectively) with increased DMI (g?kg(-1) of BW?d(-1)), whereas total chewing and total time spent on each chewing activity increased. Calculated total energy expended by the chewing activity was 4.2, 4.4, 5.2, and 5.3% of ME intake for DMI of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5% of BW and ad libitum, respectively, indicating that adjustments in animal chewing behavior may be a mechanism of reducing energy expenditure when forages are fed at restricted intake. Hay digestibility decreased (P < 0.001) with increased DMI (r = -0.865). Digesta mean retention time (h) was strongly correlated with DMI (r = -0.868) and OM digestibility (r = 0.844). At reduced intake, hay digestibility was enhanced (P < 0.001) by extending digesta retention time and by increasing chewing efficiency, highlighting the relationship between chewing behavior and the digestive process. Fractional outflow rate of particulate matter from the reticulorumen (k(1)) was positively correlated with total chews, emphasizing that the decrease in particle size caused by chewing facilitates particle flow through the digestive tract. Increased hay intake also increased (P < 0.001) k(1), whereas passage rate of the liquid phase, transit time, and rumen fill were not affected (P > 0.05). The latter was correlated with rumen volume (r = 0.803). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that animals fed at restricted intake increased chewing rate when eating and ruminating, which, along with a longer digesta retention time, contributed to enhance feed digestibility. 相似文献

1. Genetically fat and lean adult broiler breeder females were fed ad libitum or restricted throughout life. At one year of age, comparisons of blood viscosity and haematology and changes in blood chemistry after exposure to thermal stress were conducted. 2. Whole blood viscosity was more than twice as high, and plasma triglyc‐eride and haemoglobin concentrations were over 30% higher in fat line than in lean line females fed ad libitum or in restricted birds of both genotypes. 3. Mean cell haemoglobin concentration was higher and mean cell volume lower in fat compared with lean line females. 4. Food restriction was associated with lower plasma triglyceride concentrations, lower numbers of heterophils and monocytes and a lower heterophil‐lymphocyte ratio. 5. Fat line birds had a higher blood pCO2 and lower pH than lean line birds. 6. Thermal stress was associated in ad libitum‐fed birds with a rise in blood pH and a decrease in pCO2, and in restricted birds with a decline in blood pH and an increase in pCO2. 7. 1. Egg production, body weight, feed intake and mortality were recorded in over 78?000 broiler breeder hens in 4 commercial flocks housed in 16 houses from early lay though 40 weeks of lay. A total of 420 hens were sampled at regular intervals throughout the laying period to determine the changes in body weight and the numbers of yellow follicles, paired follicles and hierarchical positions with time in the ovary throughout lay to relate ovarian function to productivity. Average egg weight was recorded weekly from one flock. 2. A quadratic equation fitted the changes in time for the number of yellow follicles, body weight, feed intake and mortality; a linear equation described the decline in the number positions in the hierarchy and there was a linear decline in the logistic scale of the proportions of yellow follicles developing as pairs of similar weight. Egg production was described by a cubic equation and egg weight by a line plus exponential model. 3. The average number of yellow follicles declined from 7·2 to 5·4 and the number of hierarchical positions from 6 to 5 from 4 to 40 weeks after photostimulation. The proportion of follicles developing as pairs of similar weight was over 25% at the onset of lay and declined to less than 10% from 20 weeks after photostimulation, representing a substantial loss of potential productivity. 4. Body weight and egg production were similar to the breeder's targets whereas average egg weight and mortality were higher than expected. 5. The relationship defining ovarian function will facilitate the development of an improved model of egg production in broiler breeder hens. 相似文献

1. The reproductive structures of 4 broiler breeder lines fed ad libitum or restricted were compared at 1st egg. The lines were contemporary male- and female-lines and their respective progenitor lines maintained without selection for 20 years. 2. The selected lines were larger and had more hierarchical yellow follicles than the relaxed lines. The numbers of positions in the hierarchy were greater in the selected lines. The number of atretic follicles and the proportion of multiple follicles were relatively high in the selected male-line. 3. There were more white follicles in the range 1.8 to 5.0 mm diameter in the selected male-line than in the relaxed line, whereas selection did not change white follicle numbers in the female-line. 4. Food restriction decreased the numbers of normal and atretic yellow follicles and the proportion of multiples but had no effect on the number of positions in the hierarchy. Restricted feeding decreased the number of white follicles 1.4 to 2.4 mm and increased follicles 2.4 to 5.0 mm diameter. 5. There was little change in age at 1st egg among lines fed ad libitum. Restricted feeding increased age at 1st egg and the difference was greater in female- than in male-lines and in relaxed compared with selected birds. 6. Abdominal fatness was similar among the lines fed ad libitum and was decreased by restricted feeding. 7. Oviduct weights were greater in selected than in relaxed lines and were decreased by restricted feeding only in the selected male-line. 8. The weight of the largest follicle was higher in the selected lines and in restricted compared with ad libitum-fed birds. Plasma triglyceride concentrations were lower in restricted birds from the selected and relaxed female-lines compared with the other groups. The relation between plasma leptin and daily ad libitum roughage intake was evaluated during a 14‐day period in eight obese Shetland ponies. When the feeding strategy was changed from maintenance feeding to ad libitum feeding, feed intake increased the first day, decreased the second day and increased again during the following days to reach a constant level after 8 days. Plasma leptin concentration increased during the first 2 days, but remained constant afterwards. Although the same pattern was found in all ponies, the magnitude of the increase in leptin on day 1 and the resulting decrease in feed intake on day 2 differed between ponies. A lower anorectic effect was seen in ponies with higher initial leptin concentration, suggesting the presence of different degrees in leptin sensitivity in obese ponies. High leptin production in a attempt to compensate for the decrease in leptin sensitivity might explain large variations in plasma leptin among obese ponies with similar body condition score. Further research is necessary to clarify whether the reduced leptin sensitivity precedes obesity in equines or vice versa. 相似文献

1. Feed intake and performance of birds given sequential or loose-mix feeding was investigated from 19 to 42 weeks of age. A complete diet was fed as control (C). A balancer diet (50) was fed either sequentially (S50) or in a loose-mix (L50) with wheat. This diet was formulated to provide a similar nutritive value as C assuming a 50 : 50 diet and wheat intake. Another balancer diet (25) was fed sequentially (S25) or in a loose-mix (L25) with wheat. The diet was to provide a similar nutritive value as C assuming 75 : 25 diet and wheat intakes. In sequential feeding, only wheat was fed in the morning (4 h after lights-on) and the balancer diet in the late afternoon (4 h before lights-off). In the loose-mix treatment, a mixture of the two diets was fed throughout the 16-h daily light. Each treatment was given ad libitum to 25 birds in individual cages. 2. Birds fed on L25 had lower total feed intakes than those receiving C, S50 or S25. Protein intake was reduced with L25 compared to C, S50, S25 and L50. Metabolisable energy (ME) intake was, however, similar among all treatments. Egg production and weight were reduced with L25 compared to S50 and S25. Body weight (BW) was lowered with L25. However, there was high individual variation in all variables. 3. Feeding system (sequential vs loose-mix) had no effect on ME intake. However, the loose-mix treatment reduced feed and protein intake due to lower balancer diet intake. It also resulted in low egg production, egg and BWs compared to sequential feeding. The weights of pancreas and gizzard were heavier with sequential and loose-mix compared to the control. 4. The loose-mix treatment reduced egg-laying performance. Sequential feeding resulted in similar egg-laying performance to conventional feeding and thus could be used to advantage in situations where it is applicable. 相似文献

Male turkey poults were fed on diets containing either adequate (29%) or inadequate (20%) amounts of crude protein from 1 d to 6 weeks of age. Each bird was weighed and the length of its lower‐leg measured at 1 d and at 6 weeks of age. The initial body weight of adequately‐fed turkeys bore little or no relationship to 6‐week body weight. Length of lower‐leg at 1 d gave a more reliable prediction of body weight ranking at 6 weeks. The pharmacokinetics and metabolism of sulphadimidine (SDM) following intravenous administration of 100 mg/kg were studied in seven dwarf preruminant kids at 12 weeks of age, and again at the ruminant stage, when the animals were 18 weeks old. The persistence of SDM in 18-week-old kids was prolonged in comparison to the 12-week-old animals: a lower total body clearance and a prolonged elimination of SDM were obtained in the older animals. The renal clearance values of SDM and its metabolites were the same at both ages. The decrease of SDM clearance is related to the significant reduction in SDM hydroxylation at the older age. The reduced oxidative hepatic metabolism may result from the sexual maturation of the kids. 相似文献

Changes in appetite, body mass (BM), body condition score (BCS), direct (ultrasonographic) and indirect (deuterium oxide dilution technique) measures of body fat were monitored in Welsh Mountain pony mares ( n = 11, 5–19 years of age) offered ad libitum access to a complete diet (gross energy 16.9 ± 0.07 MJ/kg dry matter) for 12 weeks during summer ( n = 6; 246 ± 20 kg) and winter ( n = 5; 219 ± 21 kg). At the outset, each group comprised two thin (BCS 1–3/9), moderate (BCS 4–6/9) and obese (BCS 7–9/9) animals.For ponies that were non-obese at the outset, BM was gained more rapidly ( P = 0.001) in summer (0.8 ± 0.1 kg/day) than winter (0.6 ± 0.0 kg/day). This was associated with a seasonal increase in dry matter intake (DMI) which became maximal (summer, 4.6 ± 0.3% BM as DMI/day; winter, 3.5 ± 0.1% BM as DMI/day) during the second month. The appetite of the obese ponies was half that reported for non-obese animals in the summer and BM remained constant irrespective of season.Body ‘fatness’ increased progressively for non-obese but not obese ponies. Body fat content was exponentially associated with increasing BCS but BCSs >6 were not useful indicators of actual body fat. Endogenous circannual mechanisms to suppress winter weight gain were insufficient to prevent the development of obesity in ad libitum fed ponies. 相似文献

Five crossbred steers (347 kg) were surgically fitted with rumen fistulae, hepatic portal, abdominal aorta and mesenteric catheters to measure organic acid absorption from the gut during acute [intraruminal glucose, 12 g/kg body weight (G)] or subacute [ad libitum 70% concentrate diet (C)] acidosis. Samples were taken at time 0, then every 2 h for 48 h after a switch from an alfalfa diet to C, or dosing with G. Steers receiving C received G 1 wk later so that five steers provided four observations/treatment. Blood flow rates were determined by infusion of para-amino hippuric acid (PAH) and averaged 767.8 and 712.5 liters/h for C and G, respectively. Animals consuming C averaged 13.6 kg dry matter from 0 to 24 h and 1.5 kg from 24 to 48 h. Rumen pH declined to 4.2 for G compared with 6.0 for C. Blood pH and HCO3 showed only slight depressions for G from 16 to 26 h, the period of lowest rumen pH. Rumen L-lactate concentration averaged 53.4 mM (peak 77 mM) and 2.1 mM for G and C, respectively. Rumen D-lactate concentration averaged 30.2 mM (peak 47 mM) for G and 1.2 mM for C. Net portal absorption of L-lactate averaged 96.6 and 164.4 mmol/h, whereas that of D-lactate averaged 10.5 and 71.8 mmol/h for C and G, respectively. Mean net portal volatile fatty acid absorptions were 442.8, 192.1, 53.8, 5.3 and 10.4 mmol/h (C) and 100.0, 47.2, 9.4, .98 and .78 mmol/h (G) for acetate, propionate, butyrate, isobutyrate and isovalerate, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Angus and Angus x Hereford heifer calves born in spring or fall seasons were allotted by weight at weaning to be exposed to bulls for calving at either 24 or 30 mo of age. Comparisons were made 1) within birth season--heifers born in the same season were first exposed to bulls at either 14 to 16 or 19 to 22 mo of age and 2) within breeding season--heifers born in different but consecutive seasons (spring-fall or fall-spring) were exposed to bulls during the same season but at different ages. Spring-born heifers exposed for 30-mo calving were heavier (336 vs 302 kg) and taller (P less than .01) at breeding than those exposed for 24-mo calving. Also, more were observed in estrus and became pregnant (P less than .01) during a 21-d AI breeding period, but season-long (63 d) pregnancy rates were not different (86%). Fall-born heifers exposed for 24- or 30-mo calving were similar for weight, hip height, and body condition score (BCS) at breeding, but season-long pregnancy rates were 71 and 94%, respectively (P less than .01). Although fall-born heifers were heavier at weaning (P less than .01), spring-born heifers were heavier, taller, and had higher BCS at breeding (P less than .01), regardless of age. Within spring breeding seasons, breeding weight and initial reproduction were not affected by heifer age. Within fall breeding seasons, older heifers were larger (P less than .01) and had greater reproductive performance (P less than .05) than younger heifers. Age at breeding, irrespective of season, consistently affected (P less than .01) both hip height (116 vs 113 cm) and pelvic area (209 vs 178 cm2) for older vs younger heifers, respectively. These data indicate that heifers exposed for 30-mo first calving are heavier, taller, have larger pelvic area, and have greater reproductive performance than those exposed for 24-mo first calving. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of ovariectomy (i) and ad libitum feeding (ii) on energy intake, body weight (BW), body composition, thyroid status, leptin and ghrelin plasma concentrations. Four young adult female Beagle dogs were fed a maintenance diet for 6 weeks prior to ovariectomy, then 6 months after. Food allowance was adjusted in order to maintain optimal BW. Then, a diet slightly higher in energy concentration was fed ad libitum for 4 months. The maintenance diet was then fed ad libitum for one additional month. The maintenance of optimal BW after ovariectomy required a significant decrease in energy allowance. No increase in fat mass was observed. Ghrelin concentration remained unchanged. During the first month of ad libitum feeding, plasma ghrelin concentration and energy intake increased, then they decreased. Mean BW, plasma leptin, thyrotropin (TSH), total triiodothyronine (TT3) and total thyroxine (TT4) concentrations significantly increased over the study. The BW increase was exclusively due to an increase in body fat. In conclusion, energy allowance should be strictly controlled in spayed female dogs. The results suggest that in dogs, thyroid hormones, leptin and ghrelin concentrations change in response to a positive energy balance in an attempt to limit weight gain.
