Choanal atresia in a cat

CASE HISTORY: A 5-month-old domestic shorthair kitten with a history of chronic left unilateral nasal discharge was examined.

CLINICAL FINDINGS: Endoscopy and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a complete membranous obstruction of the left nasal choana, confirming congenital unilateral choanal atresia. In addition, congenital hydrocephalus was detected on CT. Nasopharyngoscopy was performed for confirmation and treatment of choanal atresia.

DIAGNOSIS: Unilateral membranous choanal atresia associated with congenital hydrocephalus.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This report describes a rare congenital condition and for the first time, CT imaging provided an accurate diagnosis and allowed planning for the successful treatment of unilateral membranous choanal atresia. In addition, concurrent congenital hydrocephalus was diagnosed.     

Choanal lymphosarcoma in a 7-year-old golden retriever: diagnosis and treatment

A 7-year-old, spayed female, golden retriever with a 1-year history of progressive stertor and reverse sneezing was referred for further diagnostics. Endoscopy and computed tomography of the head revealed a bilobed mass in the choanae. Cytologic and histopathologic examinations of the mass were consistent with lymphosarcoma. Treatment consisted of chemotherapy.     

Congenital biliary atresia in a cat: a case report

A case of congenital biliary atresia in a six-month-old cat is presented. The cat had recurrent bouts of depression, anorexia, vomiting and pyrexia, since it was acquired as a three-month-old kitten. Physical examination showed the cat to be jaundiced. Abdominal palpation revealed several smooth, round masses, confluent with the liver in the right cranial quadrant. A tentative diagnosis of congenital biliary atresia was made based on history, clinical and laboratory examination and radiography. This was confirmed at necropsy.     

Diagnosis and successful treatment of a presumptive case of aspergillosis in a Micronesian kingfisher (Halcyon cinnamomina cinnamomina)

A 4-yr-old male Micronesian kingfisher was suspected of having an aspergillus infection. The infection was thought to be related to stress associated with movement to a new enclosure/exhibit and cage-mate aggression. The diagnosis was based on an elevated white cell count, positive antibody and antigen aspergillus titers, and abnormal plasma protein electrophoresis characterized by a moderate elevation of alpha2 and severe elevation on the beta protein fractions. The bird was treated with antifungal medication administered systemically and by nebulization for 10 wk. Response to treatment was monitored by serial white cell counts and plasma electrophoresis. Clinical improvement in this bird was correlated with a return of the white blood cell count to normal levels and what was considered a normal protein electrophoresis distribution.     

Computed Tomographic Features of Choanal Atresia in a Friesian Foal

A 3-week-old Friesian colt with a history of respiratory distress since birth was presented to our facility. Results after an endoscopy showed obstruction of the right nasal passage to the nasopharynx. Computed tomography was performed to further characterize this unilateral blockage. The images demonstrated a complete membranous obstruction of the ventral meatus, along with deviation of the vomer bone toward the left side of the nasal cavity. The diagnosis of unilateral choanal atresia was confirmed. This report is the first to describe computed tomographic features of choanal atresia in a foal.     

Hypospadias in a Himalayan cat

A one-year-old male Himalayan cat was presented with a history of chronic cystitis. Physical examination revealed that the cat had hypospadias. It was postulated that the abnormal urethral opening on the ventral aspect of the penis permitted faecal contamination of the preputial area and gave rise to the ascending infection. The hypospadias was surgically corrected and a complete recovery was achieved.     

An investigation of a reported case of white striping in broilers

Market reports of white striping in broiler breast fillets have been increasing, which has generated concerns in the broiler meat industry regarding negative effects on consumer acceptance. This study was conducted to macro- and microscopically characterize the condition of white striping at varying degrees of severity on Cobb 500 broiler breast fillets slaughtered at 42 d of age. Carcasses of 2,512 broilers presenting white striping were slaughtered and macroscopically classified according to the degree of severity of the striations as moderate or severe; further histological microscopic evaluation demonstrated degenerative myopathy in both moderate and severe cases, but 75% of those breast fillets were classified as moderate. Typically, the samples classified macroscopically as moderate showed microscopic necrosis only (65.17%) or moderate multifocal necrosis (9.83%), whereas those classified as severe showed diffuse and strong necrosis (25.00%). The proliferation of connective tissue was not observed for either of the degrees of white striping investigated, characterizing this profile as an acute occurrence.     

Surgical Correction of Congenital Bilateral Choanal Atresia in a Foal

Congenital bilateral choanal atresia was corrected surgically in a neonatal foal. Presenting clinical signs included complete obstruction of the upper airway, which had been relieved by tracheotomy. The diagnosis was confirmed by endoscopic examination and contrast radiography. Bilateral nasal flaps were used to gain access to the caudal nasal cavity, allowing removal of obstructive tissue and restoration of normal respiration. Malocclusion developed secondary to surgical intervention and resultant damage to suture lines of developing flat bones of the skull. Nine months postoperatively, the asynchronous growth of the mandible and maxilla had not resulted in difficulty during mastication. Respiration, although audible during periods of exercise, was acceptable to the owners.     

Ketoconazole for successful treatment of cryptococcosis in a cat

Cryptococcosis affecting the skin and a lymph node in a 1 1/2-year-old cat was treated successfully with ketoconazole as the sole therapeutic agent. The cat was lesion-free 1 year after treatment.     

Diagnosis and successful treatment of a caudal lingual abscess in a geriatric dog

A 13-year-old, intact male, golden retriever was presented for glossomegaly. A diagnosis of a caudal lingual abscess was made by fine needle aspiration under general anesthesia. The dog showed marked clinical improvement following abscess drainage. Lingual abscesses should be included as a differential diagnosis in any dog with an unexplained acute glossomegaly.     

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma: the first reported case in a nonhuman animal species

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor that almost exclusively occurs in children. It is a low-grade malignant neoplasm that is locally aggressive but without proven metastatic potential. Herein, we describe a case of Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in a 10-year-old male dog. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of this vascular tumor occurring in a nonhuman animal species. The tumor was located on the ventromedial surface of the posterior limb. Microscopic examination of the lesion revealed a multinodular tumor with sheets of spindled endothelial cells forming vascular slits similar to Kaposi's sarcoma and peripheral tumor lobules resembling capillary hemangioma.     

Use of intraoperative impression smear cytology to guide successful treatment of a large renal cyst in a dog: a case report

A 13-yr-old Shih tzu was referred for surgical management of right-sided cranial abdominal mass, which corresponded to large, cavitated renal mass on ultrasonography, and was suspected to represent neoplasia. Intraoperative impression smear cytology (ISC) of the renal mass wall was consistent with benign renal cyst (RC), without evidence of neoplasia or infection. Deroofing and omentalisation were performed and histopathology was consistent with benign RC. Chronic kidney disease was diagnosed 4 mon postoperatively, however, the dog was asymptomatic, without cyst reoccurrence. Intraoperative ISC is an expedient and inexpensive diagnostic technique that can guide most appropriate treatment in dogs with large RCs.

Diagnosis and successful treatment of Cryptococcus neoformans variety grubii in a domestic ferret

A domestic ferret was presented for episodic regurgitation. Cytologic examination and culture of an enlarged submandibular lymph node revealed Cryptococcus neoformans variety grubii (serotype A). The ferret was successfully treated with itraconazole. This is the first documented case of Cryptococcus neoformans variety grubii in a ferret in the United States.
