Academic and private practice partnerships in veterinary radiology residency training

As veterinary radiologists devote greater time to telemedicine consultation, residency training must evolve to reflect the skills of these services. The contribution of private practice/consultant radiologists to residency training has traditionally been minimal but academic and private practice partnerships in education and research can provide the framework for a well‐rounded residency. These partnerships can also lessen the impact of workforce shortages in academia and provide financial compensation to academicians through external consultation. The purpose of this commentary is to review existing collaborative interactions between academic and private practice veterinary radiologists; with a focus on ways to sustain, improve, and cautiously increase the number of veterinary radiology training programs.     

Research partnerships in relation to topics in animal breeding and genetics

A total of 1,628 papers presented at the sixth and seventh World Congresses on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production were categorized into 20 topics according to research subjects. The aim was to determine, in relation to various topics in animal breeding and genetics, the forms of partnerships and the degree of attention given in different continents. North-North partnerships (defined as cooperation between and within developed countries) had a 68.80% representation of research papers presented, whereas North-South partnerships (cooperation between developed and developing countries) had the least representation with only 8.23% of papers. Asia contributed the most research papers in biochemical genetics, whereas Australia lead in research papers on breeding for fiber and fur. Europe contributed the most to the remaining topics, and Africa usually, but not always, contributed the least to most research topics. This study provided a useful indication of the current state of literature in animal breeding and genetics and will be useful to animal breeding and genetics researchers worldwide as they chart the way forward for research and development in the field of genetics applied to livestock production in different continents.

Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programs in West Africa as a model for sustainable partnerships in animal and human health

The concept of animal and human health experts working together toward a healthier world has been endorsed, but challenges remain in identifying concrete actions to move this one health concept from vision to action. In 2008, as a result of avian influenza outbreaks in West Africa, international donor support led to a unique opportunity to invest in Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programs (FELTPs) in the region that engaged the animal and human health sectors to strengthen the capacity for prevention and control of zoonotic diseases. The FELTPs mixed 25% to 35% classroom and 65% to 75% field-based training and service for cohorts of physicians, veterinarians, and laboratory scientists. They typically consisted of a 2-year course leading to a master's degree in field epidemiology and public health laboratory management for midlevel public health leaders and competency-based short courses for frontline public health surveillance workers. Trainees and graduates work in multidisciplinary teams to conduct surveillance, outbreak investigations, and epidemiological studies for disease control locally and across borders. Critical outcomes of these programs include development of a cadre of public health leaders with core skills in integrated disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, vaccination campaigns, laboratory diagnostic testing, and epidemiological studies that address priority public health problems. A key challenge exists in identifying ways to successfully scale up and transform this innovative donor-driven program into a sustainable multisectoral one health workforce capacity development model.     

Building a practice with a computer

It should be emphasized that the primary function of the computer is information-handling and communication. It remembers who and when and why, organizes the information, and then communicates by reminders, letters, labels, word processing, and statements. The computer becomes a faithful employee, not altogether immune from physical illness but generally ready to work at the flip of a switch. Best of all, the computer never asks for overtime or a percentage of the profits.
