Discospondylitis in swine.

Gross and microscopic lesions of discospondylitis in swine are described. Gross lesions were characterized by areas of destruction and cavitation involving intervertebral discs and adjacent structures. Microscopically, acute lesions had hemorrhage and necrosis with infiltration of granulocytes and mononuclear cells. In chronic cases intradiscal structures were replaced by vascular connective tissue which contained plasma cells and lymphocytes. These lesions were most frequently associated with chronic erysipelas polyarthritis.     

Discospondylitis in the dog

Five cases of bacterial discospondylitis in dogs are described. The clinical features included spinal pain, stiffness, lameness and in some cases a neurological deficit. Radiography proved the best aid to diagnosis and demonstrated bony destruction adjacent to an irregular disc space with sclerosis of the centra. Surgical curettage of the infected disc was carried out in conjunction with antibiotic therapy.     

Discospondylitis associated with three unreported bacteria in the dog

Three cases of discospondylitis in the dog, caused respectively by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus epidermidis, are reported. These bacteria have not previously been documented as being the cause of the condition in this species. The neurological involvement was severe in all three cases. Two dogs were paraplegic and one was tetraplegic, and one of the paraplegic dogs had no deep pain on the extremities of both pelvic limbs. All dogs were treated surgically with a satisfactory neurological recovery.     

Discospondylitis in association with an intra-abdominal abscess in a dog

An 11-year-old German shepherd dog cross was presented with a six-week history of weight loss and abdominal distension. A diagnosis of abdominal abscess and discospondylitis was made. The dog responded to surgical excision of the abscess and conservative medical treatment for discospondylitis.

Discospondylitis and orchitis associated with high Brucella titre in a dog

A case of discospondylitis and orchitis associated with high Brucella titre in a dog is presented. Clinical signs included intermittent pain, poor appetite and a decreased level of physical activity. Radiographic evidence of discospondylitis was found. Histopathological findings on the testes are included. Treatment regime and clinical progress are given. Diagnosis and treatment of B. canis are described and a brief review of the treatment of discospondylitis is presented.
