A single dose of digoxin was injected, IV, into 5 mature male turkeys (0.066 mg/kg of body weight), 8 male ducks (0.066 mg/kg), and 6 roosters (0.33 mg/kg). Twenty-three serial venous blood samples were collected before (baseline) and after the administration of digoxin to turkeys, ducks, and roosters. Plasma concentrations of digoxin were determined in duplicate by a radioimmunoassay that was validated for avian species. The plasma concentrations were best fitted by a 3 (turkeys, ducks)- and 2 (roosters)-compartment open model, with first-order elimination from the central compartment. Significant (P less than 0.05) kinetic differences were determined among species. Mean half-life (t1/2) for ducks, roosters, and turkeys were 8.30 +/- 2.70 (mean +/- SD), 6.67 +/- 3.50, and 23.7 +/- 4.8 hours, respectively. The volume of distribution at steady state (Vss) was 14.7 +/- 2.9, 3.13 +/- 0.49, and 2.27 +/- 0.36 L/kg, and total body clearance (CL) of drug was 1.54 +/- 0.43, 0.461 +/- 0.187, and 0.136 +/- 0.022 L/h/kg for ducks, roosters, and turkeys, respectively. The mean residence time was 10.3 +/- 3.9, 8.37 +/- 4.97, and 16.8 +/- 2.2 hours, respectively. Volume of distribution at steady state and CL in ducks were several fold higher than that in turkeys. The terminal half-life of digoxin determined for ducks and roosters in this study was considerably shorter than those previously reported for several mammalian species.  相似文献

Hemograms and plasma chemistry values are presented for six male and six female, adult, clinically normal, captive Spanish imperial eagles (Aquila adalberti). No value was substantially different from that which might be predicted on the basis of work in other related species. This data should prove useful for the interpretation of laboratory findings in future clinical cases of this endangered species of eagle.  相似文献

Reference hematologic and plasma chemistry values were determined from 103 blood samples collected from 53 clinically healthy brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis). Female snakes had significantly higher mean plasma values for total solids, total protein, calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), uric acid, and blood monocyte percentage than did males, whereas males had significantly higher mean plasma fibrinogen values. The variances for hematocrit, monocyte percentage, azurophil percentage, plasma total solids, plasma total protein, albumin, Ca, and P also differed significantly between sexes. The higher mean values and greater variances for plasma total protein, plasma total solids, Ca, and P in the female snakes were probably associated with yolk synthesis and accumulation.  相似文献

Hematologic characteristics and plasma chemistry values of juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) from the ages of 1 mo to 3 yr were obtained to establish baseline values. Five clinically normal loggerhead turtles were selected from the same clutch and raised in an indoor artificial nesting beach. Blood samples were successively collected and examined for various blood characteristics for a maximum total of 15 times. Hematologic characteristics, including packed cell volume, white blood cell counts, and white blood cell differentials; and plasma chemistry values, including total bilirubin, total protein, albumin, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, gamma-glutamic transpeptidase, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, alkaline phosphatase, amylase, triglyceride, total cholesterol, ionized sodium, ionized potassium and ionized chlorine, were measured. These results were used to establish a hematology and blood chemistry baseline for captive juvenile loggerhead turtles and will aid in their medical management.  相似文献

We established reference ranges for three hematologic and 15 clinical chemistry parameters of 40 clinically healthy birds of the genus Eos. The following species were included to the study: Eos histrio (n = 19), Eos squamata (n = 8), Eos bomea (n = 5), Eos reticulata (n = 4), Eos cyanogenia (n = 4). Detailed information concerning methodology, which is often missing in papers dealing with reference values, is included. As far as possible, data are compared with literature, and some thoughts on obvious deviations are given. The problem of establishing reference values in rare species is reviewed.  相似文献

Normal reference ranges and pertinent background information on equine hematology are presented and briefly discussed. Diagnostic interpretation of hematologic data is discussed and three diagnostic algorithms and two diagnostic tables are provided to facilitate the use of the presented information for diagnosis. Twelve blood chemistry values, six haematological values and bodyweight were estimated for six-week-old specific-pathogen-free brown leghorns. Observations were based on 208 birds sampled from 11 groups. Subsequently the same values were estimated for specific pathogen free brown leghorns and broiler hybrids of differing ages. These estimates have been designated "comparison values" and were intended for reference use in clinical pathology. Results were compared with 14 "comparison value" estimated obtained previously for six-week-old commercial broiler hybrids. Haematological values varied with age and type of bird. Differences were observed between bird types in serum protein, serum cholesterol, uric acid, calcium and potassium levels and in weight. The significance of these differences is discussed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The Wistar Hannover rat has been considered as an alternative animal model to the Sprague-Dawley rat in the safety evaluation of candidate pharmaceuticals for potential reproductive and developmental toxicity. Hematology and clinical chemistry results may provide useful evidence of maternal toxicity in the absence of fetal effects. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in routine laboratory values between nonmated and pregnant (near-term)Wistar Hannover rats during a control developmental study. METHODS: One hundred fifty pregnant female Wistar Hannover rats (Tac:Glx:WlfBR) were dosed orally once per day with distilled water from gestation days (GDs) 6 through 17. An additional 150 nonmated (nonpregnant) females used as age-matched controls were dosed from study days (SDs) 7 through 18. Blood samples were collected on GD 18 or 19 (SD 19 or 20) for routine hematology and plasma clinical chemistry tests. Reference intervals were established for pregnant and nonmated animals. RESULTS: On GD 18/19, pregnant rats had a lower RBC count, hemoglobin concentration, and HCT, and higher MCH, MCHC, reticulocyte percentage, and platelet, WBC, absolute reticulocyte, segmented neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte counts compared with nonmated rats. Pregnant rats had lower albumin, glucose, urea, and chloride concentrations, lower creatine kinase and alkaline phosphatase activities, higher total bilirubin, cholesterol, triglyceride, calcium, phosphorus, and globulin concentrations, and higher ALT activity than nonmated rats. Serum triglyceride concentration was approximately fourfold higher in pregnant rats compared with nonmated controls. CONCLUSION: Differences in hematology and chemistry values in pregnant Wistar Hannover rats are similar to those in Sprague-Dawley rats and support use of the Wistar Hannover rat as an animal model in the assessment of maternal toxicity. Differences in laboratory values of pregnant rats should be considered when interpreting data following exposure to candidate pharmaceuticals.  相似文献

Background

Pregnancy toxaemia (PT) is a disease that affects pregnant goats during their last month of gestation and is characterized by a high case fatality rate. This study involved 32 does maintained on a commercial dairy goat farm that were diagnosed with PT. A physical examination was performed on and haematology parameters obtained from each doe, at the time of diagnosis. The data from the 24 PT goats that died was compared with the corresponding data from the 8 PT goats that survived.

Results

Polypnea, swollen limbs, anorexia with absence of ruminal motility, recumbency, nervous signs and drooping ears were the most frequently observed clinical manifestations. Nineteen out of 21 recumbent goats died. Sixteen out of 17 goats with anorexia and absence of ruminal motility died. Mean beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) values in the goats that died were not significantly different from those in goats that survived. The blood values for pH and pCO2 (p?<?0.005) as well as for HCO3 ?, BE and K+ (p?<?0.001) were significantly lower in the goats that died than in those that survived.

Conclusions

The clinical signs most indicative of a poor prognosis are anorexia with absence of ruminal motility and recumbency. Among the blood parameters to be considered, hypokalaemia and metabolic acidosis are the most relevant. Goats with PT have a high mortality and their condition can deteriorate very fast. Based on the authors’s experience, a good strategy to minimize the economic losses caused by PT is to focus on the offspring survival rate since an early decision (induction of kidding or caesarian surgery) can increase the number of alive kids.

Blood samples were collected on nonracing days from 57 racing Greyhounds at 2 weeks, 8 weeks, 13 weeks, and 16 weeks after the beginning of the racing season. Hematologic and biochemical tests were performed to detect marked changes induced by stress of racing. In general, these Greyhounds were healthy. Rhabdomyolysis was detected in one dog. In several other dogs, possible subclinical muscle injury was identified by increased serum creatine kinase activities. Mean serum Ca concentrations tended to decrease during the racing season. None of the tests was a good predictor of racing performance. Mean values for several hematologic and biochemical tests were different from those of other breeds of dogs.  相似文献

本文利用曲线方程分别拟合了北京鸭、樱桃谷鸭和仙湖鸭从0 ̄7周龄的每周平均体重,作出了相应的曲线图,并进行生长曲线分析。结果表明:2周龄前的仔鸭生长曲线符合指数函数方程,而2周龄后则几乎呈直线关系,符合直线回归方程,且两个方程的拟合优度R^2均达0.986以上。  相似文献

Twenty-three lizards were captured for this study, both males and females (12 males, 10 females, 1 undetermined), with a large range in body weights (40-286 g) appeared to be healthy based on activity level, physical examinations, and body condition scores. Heparinized blood samples from 20 free-ranging basilisk lizards (Basiliscus plumifrons) in Costa Rica were used for determining complete blood cell counts, plasma, and heparinized whole blood biochemical analysis. This information will serve as baseline reference data for future health assessment studies of free-ranging and captive basilisk lizards, as well as epidemiologic, conservation, and captive-breeding studies. A point-of-care analyzer was useful for this field study, and clinical chemistry values from heparinized whole blood samples were similar to values from plasma, which indicates that separation of plasma may not be necessary to process blood samples on site in remote areas. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of hematologic and plasma biochemical data from free-ranging B. plumnifrons.  相似文献

DL-Ethionine (0.87 g/kg of body weight) was administered IV to 6 fasted (12 hour) Holstein bull calves (4.5 months old). Fasting, which was continued for an additional 48 hours, caused a body weight loss (10.82% to 11.96%), a mild increase in PCV, and an increase in the serum free fatty acids (1.204 mmole/L, fasted; 0.949 mmole/L, fasted ethionine-treated calves). Ethionine caused a decrease in the total plasma proteins from 6.5 g/dl to 5.5 g/dl and total serum lipids from 493.9 mg/dl to 307.8 mg/dl. The decrease in the serum esterified fats included all the lipid fractions (triglycerides, cholesterol, and phospholipids). The calves' WBC and serum enzymes aspartate aminotransferase and L-alanine aminotransferase remained within normal range.  相似文献
