The pharmacokinetic profile of avermectin and milbemycin compounds is affected by different drug- and host-related factors. This work reports the influence of cattle breeds on the plasma kinetics of moxidectin (MXD) after topical (pour-on) administration. Parasite-free Aberdeen Angus and Holstein calves were treated with a commercial MXD pour-on formulation at 500 microg/kg. Blood samples were collected over a period of 35 days post-treatment and the recovered plasma was analysed by high performance liquid chromatography using fluorescence detection. MXD was detected in plasma from two hours up to 35 days post-treatment in animals from both breeds. A slow MXD absorption and delayed peak plasma concentration were observed in Aberdeen Angus compared to Holstein calves. Significant lower systemic availability (expressed as AUC) (P<0.01) and peak plasma concentration (C(max)) (P<0.05) were also observed in Aberdeen Angus calves, although the plasma mean residence time (MRT) and elimination half-lives (T(1/2el)) of MXD in both breeds were similar. The pharmacokinetic differences observed between cattle breeds contribute to explain the variability in the pattern of clinical efficacy for pour-on administered endectocide compounds reported in different field trials.  相似文献

Belgian Blue (BB) cattle are very sensitive to mange caused by Psoroptes ovis and, in contrast to the case in Holstein cattle, single treatments with ivermectin do not result in complete elimination of the parasite. The objective of the present study was to determine the concentration of ivermectin in plasma, skin and hair following subcutaneous administration to Holstein and BB calves and to assess the influence of breed on drug pharmacokinetics and availability. Two groups of six healthy female Holstein and BB calves were treated with ivermectin (SC formulation) at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg. Blood, skin and hair were collected before treatment and up to 21 days after treatment. Ivermectin was analyzed in plasma and tissue by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The peak concentrations (Cmax), time-peak concentrations (Tmax), the area under the plasma concentration-time curves (AUC) and the mean residence time (MRT) were determined. The patterns of plasma and tissue ivermectin concentrations were similar in the two breeds of animals, however, the AUC and Cmax levels for plasma and skin were significantly higher in the BB calves. In hair, ivermectin was detected later than in plasma and skin, with the Tmax ranging between 4 days (Holstein group) and 6 days (BB group). The possible reasons for the significantly higher levels in plasma and skin in BB calves compared to Holstein calves are discussed.  相似文献

A desirable dog guide weighs 18 to 32 kg as an adult. Male and female German shepherd dogs and male and female Labrador retrievers were weighed between birth and 18 mo of age, with at least one weight recorded after 290 d of age. Growth curves were constructed from 10,484 observations on 880 dogs using the Gompertz function in the form Wt = W(max)exp(-e[-(t-c)/b]), where Wt is weight at time t, Wmax is mature body weight, b is proportional to duration of growth, c is age at point of inflection, and t is age in days. Estimates for mature body weight were 2.4 +/- .3 kg higher for Labrador retrievers than for German shepherd dogs and 4.7 +/- .2 kg higher for males than for females. Male Labrador retrievers were closest to the upper limit for desirable weight, with an average estimated mature weight of 31.4 +/- .3 kg. Duration of growth, 4b + c, was not different between the breeds; however, the estimate for males was 8 +/- 5d longer than for females. Female Labrador retrievers had the shortest estimate for growth of 319 +/- 6 d. The estimate for age at the point of inflection was 3.6 +/- 1.2 d greater for males than for females, but not different between breeds. A better understanding of growth curves for dog guides may aid in estimating mature weight at a young age, thus allowing earlier breeding and training decisions to be made and increasing genetic change per year.  相似文献

Suckler calves from a cow-calf operation (German Red Pied, German Black Pied) were used repeatedly for separation, transport and isolation (TSI) experiments of 60 min duration at five life ages. Measurements of body weight, body temperature and heart rate were combined with blood sampling before TSI, and at the end of the isolation period of one hour duration as well. Effects of gender, age and body weight on the variables and on the changes of the variables were tested. Characteristic heart rate values showed the increasing excitement and the motor activation of the animals in case of transport and of manipulations and the periods of relative rest within the isolation room as well. Mean noradrenalin concentration was significantly lower after TSI at all age points, mean adrenalin concentration was significantly higher after TSI at 9-14 days and significantly lower at 59-77 days of age than before. Changes of adrenalin concentration were significantly influenced by body weight and age. Sex, body weight and age had significant effects on hemoglobin (Hb), hematokrit (Hk), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), oxygen capacity (O2CAP) and oxygen contents (O2CONT). Hb, Hk and O2CAP were significantly diminished after TSI at all age points, O2CONT and oxygen saturation (O2SAT) were significantly increased after TSI at many age points. Shrinking of body weight after TSI was always significant and was significantly affected by body weight before TSI and by age. Body weight and age had significant effects on body temperature and its changes after TSI.  相似文献

Nine hundred and forty‐seven chicks comprising 490 chicks of heavy type and 457 chicks of light type laying breeds were reared in a series of experiments. Approximately one‐half was fed on a basal ration and the other on this ration plus 55 mg of procaine penicillin per kg of food. An additional 120 chicks, equal numbers of both sexes of both types, were reared on the above‐mentioned rations and half were killed at 3 weeks of age and the other half at 9 weeks so that their intestines could be studied at post‐mortem examination.

The male chicks fed the antibiotic grew at a significantly faster rate than the females up to 3 weeks of age, and the weights of 1 cm lengths of the small intestine were significantly reduced by the antibiotic in the male chicks at 9 weeks of age. Type responses were not clearly defined, but there was a significant reduction in the weight of 1 cm lengths of the small intestine at 9 weeks of age in the heavy type chicks when compared with the light type.  相似文献

The agar gel precipitation test was used to detect rotavirus antibodies in the serum of 562 calves and bovine rotavirus antigen in the feces of 347 calves. Significantly more females had rotavirus antibodies in the serum (P less than 0.01) and rotavirus antigen in the feces (P less than 0.1) than did male calves. Female buffalo calves were also found to be more susceptible than male buffalo calves to rotavirus infection.  相似文献

A longitudinal study was performed to establish estimates of prevalence of selected endoparasites in Swiss cow-calf operations and to investigate the importance of an infection with endoparasites on diarrhea and weight gain until weaning. Three hundred and eighty-six calves raised in 67 larger cow-calf herds were included in the study. Faecal samples were collected during the first three months of life and at weaning. Parasitological analyses were performed according to standard procedures including specifically the detection of Eimeria spp., Cryptosporidium parvum, Strongyloides papillosus and Trichostrongylida. The effects of an infection with endoparasites on weight gain were analyzed with a linear model accounting for effects of farm, breed, sex, calving month and weight at birth. The average prevalences of endoparasites within the first three months of life were: E. bovis 36%, E. zuernii, 19%, C. parvum 16.8%, S. papillosus 22.3% and Trichostrogylida 1.5%. The prevalence of diarrhea within the same time period was 13%. Prevalences at weaning (at the end of the grazing period) were: E. bovis 56.5%, E. zuernii 4.6%, C. parvum 3.7%, S. papillosus 14.4% and Trichostrogylida 84.5%. With the exception of E. zuernii, endoparasites were more frequently observed in healthy calves than in diarrheic calves. Weaning weights were available from 190 calves (33 herds). Statistical analyses of weaning weights revealed no evidence that an infection with helminths and/or protozoa within the first three months of life or at weaning had a negative influence on individual weight gain.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of breed, breed and sex of the calf, farm, calving number (CN), type of calving, and their interactions on CI using records from four different beef breeds performing in the humid tropical environment of Mexico. The influence of these factors on CN was also evaluated. CI and CN varied with farm, breed of the dam, and with breed of the dam by calf breed interaction (P<0.001), while CI also varied with CN. Significant differences between Bos indicus and Bos taurus breeds for CI (432 vs. 488 days) and for CN (2.13 vs. 1.92) were observed (P<0.001). The interaction effects observed between breed of the dam by breed of the calf on CI and on CN were due to a favorable F1 calf effect on CI observed only in Angus cows, although with an apparent unexpected negative impact on CN.  相似文献

Recent studies have identified the novel, host adapted Cryptosporidium bovis and the deer-like genotype in dairy cattle from farms in the United States, China, India and Europe. This novel species and genotype appear to be more prevalent in older, post-weaned dairy cattle than previously thought. However, little information is available on their prevalence in beef cow-calf operations. In the present study, we determined the prevalence of Cryptosporidium species in 98 calves (6-8 months old) and 114 cows (>2 years old) in seven beef cow-calf herds in western North Dakota. DNA was extracted from fecal samples and Cryptosporidium spp. were identified by amplification of the 18S rRNA gene followed by sequencing or RFLP analysis. All seven herds tested positive for Cryptosporidium. Overall, 43/212 (20.3%) animals were positive. Only five of these positives were from cows. C. bovis, the deer-like genotype and C. andersoni were identified in 9.4, 6.6 and 1.4% of animals sampled, respectively. C. parvum was not identified in any of the positive samples. C. bovis, the deer-like genotype and C. andersoni were detected in 6/7, 5/7 and 2/7 herds, respectively. C. bovis and the deer-like genotype were primarily detected in calves, while C. andersoni was only detected in cows. Six isolates could not be typed. These results show a relatively high prevalence of C. bovis and the deer-like genotype in 6-8-month-old beef calves compared to cows older than 2 years in the seven herds studied.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to describe a multiyear outbreak of calf diarrhea in an Alberta cow-calf herd and the impact of severe diarrhea on calf productivity. A retrospective analysis was performed through the use of detailed individual animal records and laboratory reports. The most significant laboratory finding was Salmonella Typhimurium isolated from the fecal samples of 2 ill members of the treatment crew and from 3 calves on postmortem examination. In 2002, at the peak of the outbreak, 90.3% (325/360) of the calves required treatment and 8.9% (32/360) of the calves died. In 2003, the severity of the problem had declined with only 20.9% (47/225) of the calves requiring treatment and 3.1% (7/225) of the calves dying. In both years, the weaning weights of treated calves were significantly reduced compared with those of nontreated calves. For calves weaned in 2002, after adjusting for the effect of calf sex, calves treated more than 6 times had 200-day adjusted weaning weights that were 15.2 kg (95% CI; 5.8 to 24.4 kg) lighter than of those calves treated only once or not at all (P = 0.0015, n = 321). For calves weaned in 2003, calves were 5.5 kg (95% CI; 0.23 to 10.8, P = 0.04, n = 207) lighter per treatment day with electrolytes, when calf sex and dam age were controlled for. Assuming that increased days of treatment or number of treatments is representative of disease severity, long-term calf performance is negatively affected by severe calfhood disease. The estimated lost revenue and treatment expenses, excluding the cost of labor, cow feed, and maintenance, was $22 800 in 2002 and $1589 in 2003.  相似文献

Ovulation rate, ovary weight, corpora lutea weight and uterine length were measured at 10 or 35 d of gestation in Duroc (199) and Yorkshire gilts (114). Embryos were counted at d 35. Yorkshires had significantly more corpora lutea than Durocs (13.6 vs 12.3 at d 10; 13.9 vs 12.4 at d 35). At d 10 breeds did not differ in uterine length, but by d 35 Duroc uteri were longer (P less than .01) than Yorkshire uteri (411 vs 375 cm) despite having fewer (P greater than .05) embryos (9.9 vs 10.5). Ovary weight did not differ between breeds at 10 or 35 d. Homogeneity analyses showed that the correlation matrices were significantly different between breeds at d 35 but not at d 10. In Durocs, high positive correlations existed between total embryo number and corpora lutea number (.57), ovary weight (.53) and corpora lutea weight (.25), whereas corresponding correlations were small in Yorkshires (.21, -.02 and -.03, respectively). In Yorkshires, strong negative correlations existed between total embryo survival and corpora lutea number (-.55), ovary weight (-.30) and corpora lutea weight (-.55), but in Durocs corresponding correlations were small (-.12, .14 and -.10, respectively). These results suggest that animal scientists should consider breed differences in levels of performance and its relationships among traits when designing or interpreting experiments.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To report the prevalence of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in calves and calf groups (ie, calves from the same farm) in beef breeding herds and evaluate the ability of biosecurity risk assessment questionnaires to identify calf groups with positive results for BVDV. DESIGN: Nonrandom survey. ANIMALS: 12,030 calves born in spring from 102 operations. PROCEDURES: Cow-calf producers that voluntarily enrolled in a screening project submitted ear notch specimens from calves and answered a 29-question survey instrument. Ear notch specimens were tested for BVDV with an antigen-capture ELISA (ACE), and ear notch specimens with positive ACE results for BVDV were immediately retested by performing immunohistochemistry (IHC). Follow-up testing, 3 to 4 weeks after initial positive ACE results, was done by use of a second IHC test and virus isolation on a subsequently submitted ear notch specimen from the same calves to identify those that were persistently infected (PI). RESULTS: 102 producers submitted ear notch specimens for BVDV screening. Initially, 24 of 12,030 calves had positive ACE results for BVDV. A second ear notch specimen was submitted for 20 of these 24 calves. Of 20 retested calves, 12 had positive ICH results for BVDV, confirming PI status. The 12 PI calves came from 4 calf groups (3 singletons and 1 calf group with 9 PI calves). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Prevalence of BVDV in calf groups was low, and questions designed to identify high-risk biosecurity behaviors had little value in identifying calf groups with positive results for BVDV.  相似文献

An evaluation of porcine longissimus myoglobin concentration was conducted to determine breed and gender differences for myoglobin content, estimate genetic parameters for myoglobin concentration, and determine the relationship between myoglobin content and objective measures of muscle color. Data from centrally tested (n = 255), purebred Yorkshire (42), Duroc (61), Hampshire (17), Chester White (28), Berkshire (67), Poland China (28), and Landrace (12) barrows and gilts from the 1999 National Barrow Show Sire Progeny Test were used. Ultimate pH and Hunter L were measured on the 10th-rib face 24 h postmortem. A section of bone-in loin containing the 10th rib was taken to the Iowa State University Meats Laboratory. At 48 h postmortem, Hunter L, CIE L*, a*, and b*, Japanese color score, and water-holding capacity were measured on the face of the 10th-rib loin chop. A slice from the 10th-rib loin section was evaluated for percentage of i.m. fat. The resulting loin chop was used for the determination of soluble myoglobin concentration (mg/g, wet basis). Chester White, Hampshire, and Duroc pigs had the highest (P < 0.05) myoglobin concentration (0.92, 0.95, and 0.85 mg/g, respectively), whereas Landrace had the lowest (0.62 mg/g; P < 0.05). No gender differences were detected for myoglobin concentration. The heritability estimate for soluble myoglobin concentration was 0.27. Residual correlations between soluble myoglobin and CIE L*, a*, b*, Hunter L (24 h), Hunter L (48 h), and Japanese color score were -0.17, 0.23, -0.15, -0.16, -0.13, and 0.13, respectively. These correlations are low but in the desired direction. The residual correlation between soluble myoglobin and intramuscular fat percent was 0.18. Results show that myoglobin concentration has a moderate heritability and could be used in a selection program to make pork loins darker in color.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the quality of frozen‐thawed semen from different bull breeds. Commercial frozen‐thawed bull semen samples (26 per breed, 130 totally) of five breeds (Holstein [Η], Brown Swiss [BS], Limousin [L], Belgian Blue [BB], Blonde d' Aquitaine [BA]) were used. After thawing, each semen sample was subjected to thermal resistance test (TR) for 0.5 and 1 hr at 38°C and hypo‐osmotic swelling test (HOST) for 1 hr at 150 mOsm at 37°C. Additionally, all samples were evaluated at times 0 hr (thawing), 0.5 hr (TR), 1 hr (TR) for kinetics by CASA [progressive, immotile, rapid, medium, slow moving spermatozoa, curvilinear velocity (VCL), average path velocity (VAP), straight line velocity (VSL), linearity (LIN), straightness (STR), beat cross‐frequency (BCF), amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH), wobble (WOB)]. Moreover, directly after thawing, all semen samples were evaluated for morphometry, morphology, viability and DNA fragmentation. Statistical analysis was conducted using a mixed model for repeated measures. The results showed (a) higher VCL after thawing in H, L breeds compared to BB and BA, (b) higher VAP after thawing in L compared to BB, BA, (c) higher values of progressive spermatozoa after TR in H, BS compared to BB, BA, (d) higher values of rapid spermatozoa after thawing and 0.5 hr of TR in H, BS, L compared to BB, BA, (e) lower viability in BA after thawing compared to H, BS, BB, (f) lower morphological abnormalities in H compared to L, BB, (g) higher head length in Η compared to BB. No significant differences were observed in the results from HOST and DNA fragmentation between breeds. In conclusion, quality characteristics of frozen‐thawed bull semen are dependent on the breed. Frozen semen from BB and BA breeds should be handled more carefully after thawing, as it is more sensitive to stress.  相似文献

Male lambs of the pure breeds Texel, Flemish milk sheep, and Finnish landrace, and of the crossbrech Texel x Friesian milk sheep, Texel x Finnish landrace, Suffolk x Friesian milk sheep, and Finnish landrace x He de France were fed hay and concentrates, the latter differing only in the content of copper. At high (± 35 ppm) and at moderately low (± 10 ppm) copper levels in the concentrate, breed differences in the accumulation of copper in the liver were studied‐Hepatic Cu‐levels increased significantly in the case of the high Cu‐fed animals, but great differences in the metabolism of excessive amounts of dietary Cu exist between the particular breeds and crossbreds. The Texel breed was most susceptible to an excess of dietary Cu and the Finnish landrace was the least susceptible breed, while the Flemish milk sheep and the crossbreds were intermediate. In blood serum, the enzyme activities of sorbitol dehvdrogenase, lactate dehydroge‐nase, γ‐glutamyl transferase, and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase were increased to a greater or less extent in the high Cu‐fed animals, but the correlation with hepatic Cu‐content was poor. For the most susceptible breeds, even a level of 10 ppm Cu in a ration with nearly equal amounts of hay and concentrate is insufficiently low for the prevention of Cu‐accumulation in the liver.  相似文献
