Sir,—During the survey on the cestode problems of food animals and dogs in New Zealand, Multiceps multi-cops (Leske, 1780) and its metacestode Coenurus cerebralis have been observed in the dog and sheep respectively in mid-Canterbury. An unconfirmed case has also been reported recently in a lamb's brain exported to Australia.

Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae in New Zealand

Sir:— In the recent letter from N. Inglis,(1) Inglis, N. 1984. Leptospira icterohaemorrhagia infection in deer. N.Z. vet. J., 32: 179–179. [Taylor &; Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar] an infection by Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae in deer is postulated on the basis of serological evidence. Results of antibody testing with other serovars of Leptospira would be most informative and would reveal cross-reactions, which are known to occur freyuently. Further, the strain of L. icterohaemorrhagiae antigen and the type of test used would be of great interest to readers. Seroconversion to L. icterohaemorrhagiae serovar copenhageni, has been well documented since 1951.(2) Kirschner, L. and Gray, W.G. 1951. Leptospirosis in New Zealand. Veterinary education in New Zealand

A subject that concerns us deeply at the present time is that of the proposed Veterinary School in New Zealand. As might be expected with any scheme of this importance there will be considerable controversy both within and without our profession. Any lay opinion of value must be informed, and our own expressed views will be used as a guide. Therefore it is essential for the veterinary body to have a clear appreciation of each debatable point and also to form a firm opinion on each one. This corporate expression will be an aggregate of the views of individual members so that, for it to be truly representative, each and every veterinary surgeon must define matters to his own satisfaction and be prepared to subscribe arguments based on careful thought and reason. Even ideals should be capable of testing in debate, and illogical prejudice can do considerable harm to any cause. Of the many things to be decided there are some that will affect us more closely than others, and those are the ones affecting the standard of the graduates who will enter our ranks. We must make sure that our opinions on these are given the weight they deserve.

A photographic study of the angles of 71 carpal joints of horses at the end of a race has shown that overextension of the joint is normal at this stage. Further studv is needed to determine the factors which may influence hyperextension, and whether they are relevant to carpal injury.     

Selenium in New Zealand pastures

In grasses and clovers the highest concentrations of selenium were found in the leaves. The selenium content of different species in spring pastures on the same soil type did not vary widely although the slower growing and more deeply rooting species contained higher levels. The concentration of selenium in a pasture varied with time of the year, the lower levels being usually associated with conditions that stimulated rapid growth of the herbage, although factors other than growth rate were also involved. Lucerne appeared to be unusual in that in some areas it accumulated much higher levels of selenium than was found in other associated species. A very wide variation in levels of selenium in pastures growing on different soils has been observed 3-1500 ng/g). Selenium-responsive unthriftiness in grazing lambs occurred where the selenium content of spring pastures was <20 ng/g. Pastures containing >30 ng/g were apparently adequate while intermediate levels were probably marginally deficient.     

Trichinellosis in Papua New Guinea

OBJECTIVES: To describe the discovery in a domestic pig of the first case of trichinellosis in Papua New Guinea, caused by a new taxon within the genus Trichinella (T papuae). Also, to establish if the disease occurred in the local wild pig population and in domestic pigs elsewhere in the country, and to test if the worm was infective to some other animals. PROCEDURE: Fresh and fixed tissue samples were examined by the digestion method and histologically, respectively, for the non-encapsulated larvae of T papuae. Feeding trials were conducted, using infected tissues and infective larvae, on animals under laboratory conditions. RESULTS: About 8.8% of a wild pig population in Western Province, adjacent to Irian Jaya, Indonesia, was found to be infected. Infection was not found in other local and feral animals or in domestic pigs from other parts of the country. Infection was experimentally established in cats, pigs and laboratory bred mice and rats. CONCLUSION: Trichinellosis is confined to one remote locality in PNG. Domestic pigs in the initial case became infected, probably, by eating infected wild pig meat.     

Avian reoviruses in New Zealand

Detection and propagation of viruses of domestic hens in New Zealand has been carried out mainly by using embryonated eggs. Although this technique of viral propagation is the method of choice, for a range of agents, there are advantages in using cell-culture techniques for some viruses that infect domestic hens. The present study was undertaken to find if reoviruses (respiratory enteric orphan) could be recovered from domestic hens, using chick-kidney-cell cultures.
