The proportions of Sertoli cell tumor (SCT), seminoma and Leydig cell tumor in 50 dogs with unilateral testicular tumors were 52%, 36% and 12%, respectively. The rate of occurrence of SCT in the cryptorchid testis was very high (71%). The testicular superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, testicular heat shock protein (HSP) 70 concentration and peripheral blood plasma inhibin (INH)-alpha concentration of 10 dogs with a unilateral cryptorchid testis and no testicular tumors, 10 dogs with SCT in a unilateral cryptorchid testis and 10 normal dogs, all aged 5-15 years, were measured in order to identify high risk factors for the occurrence of SCT in the canine cryptorchid testis. The mean SOD activity in cryptorchid testes and SCTs was significantly lower and higher, respectively, than in normal testes (both P<0.01). The mean HSP 70 concentration in both cryptorchid testes and SCTs was significantly higher than in normal testes (both P<0.01). The mean plasma INH-alpha concentration of the cryptorchid and SCT dogs was significantly lower and higher, respectively, than in normal dogs (P<0.05 and 0.01, respectively). The low SOD activity in the cryptorchid testis, low blood plasma INH-alpha concentration of the cryptorchid dogs and high HSP 70 concentration in the SCTs may be related to the occurrence of SCT and tumor cell proliferation in canine cryptorchid testes.  相似文献

A 14-week-old male unilaterally cryptorchid Clumber spaniel was presented for acute lethargy. Physical examination revealed abdominal pain, and a single testis was palpated in the scrotum. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) revealed a poorly vascularized, ovoid structure immediately caudal to the left kidney with scant regional peritoneal effusion. Left intra-abdominal testicular torsion was confirmed at surgery, and routine cryptorchidectomy was performed. The patient recovered uneventfully from anesthesia and surgery.Key clinical message:The most common CT characteristics of testicular torsion were present in this case and correlated well with sonographic findings to allow for rapid, accurate diagnosis and surgical planning of unilateral, non-neoplastic, intra-abdominal cryptorchid testicular torsion in a juvenile dog. Contrast enhanced CT facilitated accurate localization of the undescended testis and evaluation of testicular perfusion and may be a useful alternative to ultrasound for diagnosing testicular torsion, especially in indeterminate cases.  相似文献

Ziwuling black goats are typically found in loess plateaus regions and the Ziwuling Nature Reserve. Cryptorchidism is a common disease in this inbred goat, and its pathogenesis has been linked with the expression of insulin-like factor 3 (INSL-3). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate anatomical alterations caused by cryptorchism and the expression and distribution of INSL-3 in normal and cryptorchid testicular tissues. The testicular tissues of 6-month-old Ziwuling black goats were collected for microscopic analyses using histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and biometrical methods, as well as Western blotting to compare the expression and distribution of INSL-3. A lower expression of INSL-3 was observed in cryptorchid compared with normal testicular tissues (p < .01). Cryptorchidism caused a significant reduction in layers of spermatogenic epithelium and tubule areas in Ziwuling black goat (p < .01). The interstitial to seminiferous tubule area ratio was larger in cryptorchid than in normal group. Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) staining revealed pronounced positive bands in the interstitial tissue, while positive Alcian blue (AB) staining was not clear, and AB-PAS staining revealed a positive red band in the basement membrane of cryptorchid group. Immunofluorescence revealed a strong signal of INSL-3 expression in Sertoli and peritubular myoid cells, and moderate signal in Leydig and spermatogenic cells in the normal group. However, in cryptorchid testicular tissues, the signal of INSL-3 expression was strong in primary spermatocytes, occasional in Sertoli cells, limited in Leydig cells and absent in peritubular myoid cells. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry showed that INSL-3 expression was higher in normal testes compared with cryptorchid testicular tissues (p < .05), especially in primary spermatocytes and Sertoli cells. Collectively, our results indicate that cryptorchidism is closely related to the disorder of acid glycoprotein metabolism and the reduction in release of INSL-3 from Leydig cells. Moreover, Sertoli and peritubular myoid cells are crucial for INSL signalling and could underpin further research on the mechanism of cryptorchidism in animal.  相似文献

The effect of induced cryptorchidism on testicular function and sperm motility was investigated. Bilateral cryptorchidism was created surgically in adult male rats (treated group), and sham-operated rats were used as a control group. Five rats from each group were sacrificed on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 after surgery. The percentage of motile spermatozoa began to decrease 1 day after the operation, followed by an abrupt decline 3 and 5 days later in cryptorchid rats. Furthermore, there were significant decreases in the other sperm motility parameters 5 days after inducement of cryptorchidism. In cryptorchid rats, plasma concentrations of LH, FSH, testosterone, and inhibin B were significantly lower than in the control group 1 day after the operation. Thereafter, plasma concentrations of LH, FSH, and testosterone gradually increased in the cryptorchid rats. On the other hand, plasma concentrations of inhibin B showed a further decline from day 3 after the operation onward. Concentrations of immunoreactive (ir)-inhibin, but not testosterone, in testicular interstitial fluid were remarkably increased until 3 days after surgery in the cryptorchid rats, and declined thereafter. Testicular response to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) for testosterone release was decreased in the cryptorchid rats compared with the control rats, indicating that heat stress to testes resulted in a reduction of the activity of Leydig cells and Sertoli cells. These results clearly indicate that heat stress to the testes resulted in a significant reduction of sperm activity within 3 days, and this was followed by changes in testicular endocrine function.  相似文献

The effects of a cryptorchid testis on the contralateral testis were investigated after artificially producing unilateral cryptorchidism in 8 beagle dogs. Bilateral testicular biopsy and collection of spermatic vein blood and peripheral vein blood were performed at the time of the operation to produce the cryptorchidism and 52 weeks later. The testicular tissue was used for histological examination by light microscopy and measurement of the testicular transferrin (Tf) concentration by enzyme immunoassay. Plasma testosterone (T), estradiol-17 beta (E2), and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay. Semen was collected weekly and its quality was examined. No spermatogenesis was observed in the cryptorchid testes at 52 weeks after the operation, and the number of germ cells in the contralateral testes had decreased but the number of Sertoli cells did not change. The Tf concentration in both testes had also decreased. The mean total number of sperm between 48 and 52 weeks after the operation (194 x 10(6)) was less than half the number before the operation (510 x 10(6)). Mean spermatic vein plasma T levels (51 ng/ml) in the cryptorchid testes 52 weeks after the cryptorchid operation were significantly lower than before the operation (91 ng/ml; P < 0.05). By contrast, spermatic vein plasma E2 levels (80 pg/ml) were significantly higher than the values before the operation (51 pg/ml P < 0.05). The peripheral plasma LH levels decreased. These findings indicate that a large quantity of E2 secreted by the cryptorchid testis inhibits the endocrine and spermatogenic functions of the contralateral testis in the dog. In particular, it is assumed that dysfunction of the contralateral testis is associated with Sertoli cell dysfunction suggested by the low Tf concentration.  相似文献

Cytogenetic and histological studies were carried out on an intersex horse which was diagnosed clinically as a cryptorchid. Surgery confirmed the horse to be a bilateral abdominal cryptorchid and histological examination revealed ovarian tissue associated with the left epididymis. Chromosome analysis of cultured cells from testicular tissue, ovarian tissue and skin revealed 64-XX and 64-XY make-up, the left gonad containing a greater preponderance of XX cells over XY cells. The external characteristics and behaviour of the horse were indistinguishable from that of a "routine" cryptorchid. Other cases of equine intersexes are reviewed and theories for the discrepancies between genetic, gonadal and phenotypic sex are discussed.  相似文献

A 6-month-old male bilaterally cryptorchid Boxer was examined for acute abdominal pain. The results of physical examination, laboratory testing, and ultrasonographic examination are presented. Intra-abdominal testicular torsion was suspected and confirmed at surgery. No evidence of neoplasia was found at histopathologic examination of the twisted testicle. A discussion of testicular torsion is presented.  相似文献

Cryptorchism is an inherited congenital abnormality characterized by the failure of one or both testes to descend into the scrotum. Diagnosis can be difficult if the retained testicular tissue cannot be localized during clinical examination and the history of the animal is unknown, or if the animal shows persistent male behaviour despite the history of successful previous castration. The present case report describes the history of a cryptorchid Lama and the techniques of general anesthesia and laparoscopic cryptorchidectomy advocated.  相似文献

Data from 16 North American veterinary university teaching facilities, 5009 cryptorchid horses, were analysed using relative risk methodology. In five breeds (Thoroughbred, Standardbred, Morgan, Tennessee Walking horse and Arabian), cryptorchism was diagnosed significantly (P less than 0.05) less frequently than expected by their representation in the hospital population. Three breeds, (Percheron, American Saddle horse and American Quarterhorse), plus ponies (as a group) and crossbred horses were significantly over-represented within the series. The over-representation of Quarter-horses was evident at each veterinary teaching facility. Other developmental defects and testicular tumours diagnosed in cryptorchid horses were presented. Analysis of the frequency of diagnosis of second anomalies among cryptorchids showed testicular hypoplasia to occur significantly more often, and inguinal and umbilical hernias less often, than expected (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

This article describes atypical interstitial (Leydig) cell tumors in two cryptorchid horses. Ultrasonography allowed accurate localization of the cryptorchid testicles. Ultrasonographic features of the tumor are also presented and may be of value for the clinical diagnosis.Histopathological evaluation of testicular tissue after cryptorchidectomy revealed atypical evolving interstitial (Leydig) cell tumors. Clinically, the tumors reported here appear to have several similarities with the interstitial (Leydig) cell tumors described in the literature, which in most cases appear to be (1) cryptorchidism–induced tumors, (2) often benign and not enlarged, and (3) often associated with aggressive behavior. Although generally considered to be uncommon, equine testicular neoplasms may occur more frequently than previously thought. The use of ultrasonography may improve diagnosis.  相似文献

Objective— To describe laparoscopic removal of a large testicular teratoma in a standing horse.
Study Design— Clinical report.
Animals— Thoroughbred horse (11 months) with a testicular teratoma.
Methods— A unilateral cryptorchid testicle could not be removed by an inguinal approach under general anesthesia because of it s large size. After recovery from general anesthesia, ultrasound evaluation revealed a 24 × 19 cm fluid-filled testicular mass. The mass was removed by paralumbar fossa laparoscopy with the horse in a standing position. After fluid aspiration of the mass, the mesorchium and ductus deferens were ligated with extracorporeal knots and the mass retrieved inside a laparoscopic specimen pouch. Morphologic features were consistent with a teratoma.
Results— Laparoscopic-guided aspiration of fluid from the teratoma decreased mass size and increased ease of manipulation and retrieval. Retrieval of the teratoma in a laparoscopic specimen pouch prevented loss of abdominal insufflation, helped reduce fluid leakage, and potential seeding of neoplastic cells.
Conclusion— Use of laparoscopy for removal of neoplastic cryptorchid testicles offers many advantages including minimal invasiveness and increased safety associated with good visibility of structures.
Clinical Relevance— Standing laparoscopic surgery should be considered for removal of testicular neoplasms in horses.  相似文献

Previously, we reported the normal postnatal developmental changes in immunohistochemical localization of alpha-smooth muscle actin (SMA) and vimentin in the bovine testis. In this study, we demonstrate the alterations of these cytoskeletal proteins in the bovine cryptorchid testis as compared to the contralateral scrotal testis during postnatal development. Seminiferous peritubular alpha-SMA did not appear in the cryptorchid testis until 8 months of age, except for very weak intermittent filaments in relatively larger seminiferous tubules. However, a similar peritubular pattern was observed in the 18-month-old cryptorchid and scrotal testes. Moreover, weak expression of alpha-SMA in the straight tubules and rete testes at 5 months of age did not improve until 18 months of age in the cryptorchid testes. The Sertoli cell vimentin in the cryptorchid testes revealed a highly immature pattern at 5 months of age, a pattern similar to a transforming pattern with infranuclear vimentin extensions at 8 months of age, and a pattern that was almost a transforming pattern, but with considerable weakening of the vimentin filaments, at 18 months of age. In conclusion, cryptorchidism may cause considerable delay in testicular myoid cell differentiation and in attainment of the transforming pattern of the Sertoli cell vimentin, which weakens and fails to attain the mature pattern in the cryptorchid testis. These alterations may be related to the structural immaturity and functional failure of postnatally developing bovine testes exposed continuously to body heat.  相似文献

The present report describes a case of a nine-year old male bilaterally cryptorchid boxer presented with testicular torsion and concurrent prostatic cyst. Clinical signs included anorexia, locomotor difficulty and apathy. Abdominal palpation revealed the presence of a hard and painful mass in caudal abdomen. Ultrasonographic findings were compatible with testicular torsion and prostatic cyst, confirmed at surgery. Bilateral orchiectomy and omentalisation were performed. Histopathological examination of the torsed testicle revealed alterations consistent with seminoma.  相似文献

A prospective epidemiologic study of canine testicular neoplasia was undertaken in the Philadelphia area in 1971, with the cooperation of private veterinary practitioners. By the end of 1975, 938 dogs had been monitored for an average of 2 years. The cohort consisted of 609 cryptorchid and 329 age- and breed-matched controls. The incidence of testicular neoplasia in the cryptorchid subcohort was 12.7/1,000 dog-years at risk. Testicular neoplasms did not develop in controls. A large proportion of the dogs were below the average age at onset for this neoplasm. Among dogs over 6 years of age, the incidence was 68.1/1,000 dog-years at risk. The incidence of Sertoli cell tumors and seminoma was approximately twice as high in dogs with unilaterally retained inguinal testicles as in abdominal cryptorchids. Sertoli cell tumors developed in 10 dogs and seminoma developed in 6. One half of the testicular neoplasms that developed did so within the first year of observation. This study demonstrated the feasibility of conducting prospective epidemiologic studies of canine diseases with the assistance of practicing veterinarians.  相似文献

An intra-abdominal testicular tumour was diagnosed in a 10-year-old, male, cryptorchid golden retriever. Upon surgical removal, torsion of the testis was found. The histopathological diagnosis was seminoma. The ultrasound examination in this case revealed a parenchymal mass lesion. An ultrasound examination is a useful supplemental diagnostic tool for differentiation of abdominal mass lesions.  相似文献

Exposure of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats to acrylamide (AA) or di-butyl-phthalate (DBP) from the 12th gestational day to the 16th postnatal week (PNW) has been shown to reduce the effectiveness of orchiopexy in recovering the testicular alterations associated with experimental cryptorchidism established at weaning. Herein, we provide information about the long-term effects of AA or DBP on the testes of cryptorchid/orchiopexic rats. Male offspring exposed in utero to 10 mg/kg/day AA or 500 mg/kg/day DBP underwent bilateral surgical cryptorchidism at the 3rd PNW and orchiopexy at the 6th week, with continuous exposure to the chemicals through diet until the 58th week. Regardless of the test chemical, there were severe qualitative/quantitative alterations in the seminiferous tubules and increased numbers of Leydig cells. There was an increase and decrease in the number of tubules with c-Kit- and placental alkaline phosphatase-labeled germ cells, respectively, as compared to those in the control group, suggesting an imbalance between apoptosis and cell proliferation processes. The histological scores of the testicular lesions at the end of this one-year study were higher than those in the previous 16-week study, indicating that exposure of rats to the toxicants AA or DBP enhanced the testicular alterations induced by the chemicals beginning at the intra-uterine life, and impaired the effectiveness of orchiopexy in restoring the testes to normal morphology. Although the present experimental protocol does not completely replicate the natural human undescended testes, our findings may contribute to understanding the alterations occurring in cryptorchid/orchiopexic testes potentially exposed to exogenous chemicals for extended periods.  相似文献

Canine cryptorchidism is a congenital defect that results from sex-limited autosomal recessive gene(s). Incidence is higher in some breeds, especially in smaller and inbred ones. Parents of affected puppies are carriers. Unilateral cryptorchid dogs can be fertile, and affected individuals and their siblings should be eliminated from a breeding program to decrease incidence of the defect. Androgen and gonadotropin treatments have been tried with little or no success. Bilateral orchidectomy is the treatment of choice because of the common sequelae of testicular neoplasia and torsion.  相似文献

Greasy wool production, body weight, behaviour and fertility of male, fine wool Merino sheep were studied from 10 to 21 months of age to assess their suitability for wool production. The males were either castrated (wethers), or were hemi-castrated with a vasectomy and reduction (either partially or in full) of the parenchyma of the retained testicle, or the testicles pushed up into the ingulnal canal and the scrotum shortened (induced cryptorchids). There were significant differences among all groups in body weight, with increases being associated with the larger amounts of testicular tissue present. Fertility was low in the induced cryptorchids at 19 months of age. The hemi-castrates with reduced testicular parenchyma were infertile. The hemi-castrates with reduced testicular parenchyma had significantly heavier greasy fleece weights than the wethers and induced cryptorchids, which had similar fleece weights. The wether group suffered a higher prevalence of posthitis in spring and autumn than the hemi-castrate or induced cryptorchid groups. Those hemi-castrates with the largest amount of testicular parenchyma retained and the induced cryptorchids exhibited masculine behaviour patterns and had an increased incidence of fly strike to the head. The principle of hemi-castration and reduction of the testicular parenchyma is shown to be applicable in wool producing flocks with the potential to increase greasy wool production while minimising the management and marketing limitations previously associated with induced cryptorchids.  相似文献

A 16-year-old thoroughbred stallion developed sudden swelling of the left testicle. The stallion had previously been regarded as a unilateral cryptorchid. Ultrasound examination of the left testicle revealed a diffusely heterogeneous parenchyma. The testicle was diffusely hypoechoic with ill defined regions of hyperechogenicity giving the appearance of hypoechoic nodules throughout the testicular parenchyma. No normal testicular tissue was identifiable. An echogenic band, representing a pseudocapsule could be seen surrounding the testicle. Histopathologic diagnosis a seminoma.  相似文献

This report describes an unusual case of unilateral abdominal cryptorchidism in a Shetland pony. On the cryptorchid side, no testicular structures were present in the inguinal area but testicular/epididymal remnants at the distal end of a pedunculated structure could be discerned in the abdomen at laparoscopic examination. Furthermore, the deferent duct was disconnected from the epididymal remnants and the deferent duct was visible at the caudal aspect of the bladder, traversing over the lateral ligament of the bladder into the vaginal ring where it ended blindly in the vaginal process. After laparoscopic removal of the testicular/epididymal remnants and castration of the contralateral normally descended testicle, the hCG stimulation test was negative and the pony no longer exhibited masculine behaviour.  相似文献
