There is increasing interest in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) in Western Europe and elsewhere, mainly because of its better drought resistance and yield potential compared with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Important drawbacks of tall fescue, compared with perennial ryegrass, are its lower digestibility and voluntary intake. Mixtures of both species might combine the advantages of each, and species interactions may eventually lead to transgressive overyielding. We compared the agronomic performance of tall fescue, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue–perennial ryegrass mixtures, as pure‐grass swards or in association with white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Tall fescue–perennial ryegrass mixtures differed in the proportion and ploidy of the perennial ryegrass component. Yield, feed quality and botanical composition were measured in the 3 years after the sowing year. We found significant effects of ploidy of the ryegrass variety and of the proportion of ryegrass in the initial seed mixture on the botanical composition of the swards. Nevertheless, all swards were dominated by tall fescue at the end of the experiment. No overyielding of the mixtures compared with that of single‐species swards was found, but feed quality was intermediate between that of the single‐species swards. Mixed swards had better drought resistance than L. perenne and higher feeding quality than F. arundinacea swards.  相似文献

Abstract Seasonal cutting treatments were imposed on abandoned perennial ryegrass/white clover swards at three sites in the UK to determine the impact on species diversity and the contribution of different species to biomass. Before the cutting experiment, the abandoned swards had received no fertilizer applications and had been neither grazed nor cut for 3 years. The original sown species, Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens, had virtually disappeared during this period. Self‐sown grasses, including Agrostis capillaris, Dactylis glomerata, Festuca rubra, Holcus mollis, Poa pratensis and P. trivialis, had become dominant at two sites. Ranunculus repens was the dominant species at the third site, and self‐sown grasses, such as Holcus lanatus and P. trivialis, and Juncus and Carex species were also present. The standing herbage in 2·5 m × 2·5 m subplots was cut to 2·5 cm above ground level and removed annually in either June or October for 7 years at two sites and 6 years at the third site. Total biomass removed was generally < 4 t dry matter (DM) ha?1, and both total and live biomass decreased over time in the June cutting treatment at two sites. There were large changes in species composition after initiating the two cutting treatments. The numbers of grass and dicot species increased, although many new species had a low frequency of occurrence. The contribution of species to biomass changed over time, with species showing a vegetative regenerative strategy decreasing over time at one site. At this site, annual cutting in June was slightly more effective than cutting in October in reducing the dominance of R. repens; cutting in early October effectively reduced Juncus spp. At two sites, there was a decrease in the contribution of the species group showing seasonal regeneration by seed, and differences between cutting dates for two species within this group at one site. L. perenne and T. repens remained at much lower levels than in adjacent unfertilized, grazed swards. Reseeding may be necessary to create species assemblages for ecological and agricultural objectives.  相似文献

The effects of extensive sward management and patch size on the persistence and colonization of gaps in sown swards was examined by creating gaps of five different sizes (2·3, 7, 10, 14 and 19 cm in diameter) in four different sward treatments: a fertilized sward grazed to 4 cm, i.e. relatively intensive management, and three extensively managed unfertilized swards, which were not grazed or grazed to 4 cm or 8 cm. The swards were originally sown with ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.), but had developed differences in species composition as a result of the management treatments imposed 2 years before and during the experiment. Light quality measurements, i.e. red-far red (R/FR) ratio, were used to determine when the light environment in the gaps no longer differed from that in control, uncut patches and this was used as an estimate of gap persistence. Persistence of gaps depended on both sward management and gap size. Gaps disappeared most rapidly in the ungrazed sward and fertilized 4-cm sward, and most slowly in the unfertilized 8-cm sward. Small gaps persisted for up to 2 weeks in all but 8-cm swards, whereas larger gaps were estimated to persist for up to 20–25 weeks in unfertilized, grazed swards. There was no evidence that the number of grass or dicotyledonous species increased in the gaps compared with the control areas. There were significant positive linear relationships between the vegetation that developed in gaps and that in the control, uncut patches, reflecting the different species composition of the established sward of the grazed (grass-dominant) and ungrazed (Ranunculus repens-dominant) treatments. For total grass dry matter and tiller numbers, as well as L. perenne tiller numbers, there was a small, but significant, effect of both patch size and sward management on the slopes of the regressions between the controls and gaps. The results are discussed in relation to the potential for species composition of sown swards to change as a result of gap creation.  相似文献

The morphological characteristics of Trifolium repens, grown in association with either Lolium perenne or Holcus lanatus and grazed by sheep to maintain sward surface heights of 3 cm, 5 cm and 10 cm, were measured. The lamina area, petiole length, internode length and internode weight of T. repens were significantly greater when H. lanatus was the companion grass than when L. perenne was the companion grass. All of these characteristics, together with the number of laminae per stolon, were also greater in the taller swards than in the shorter swards. The number of branches on each shoot did not vary significantly with either companion species or sward height treatment. Except for the effects of the treatments on the number of branches, the results are generally consistent with the known effects of variation in foliar shading on the morphology of T. repens.  相似文献

Interactions between sward diversity and forage selectivity of cattle and sheep managed within mixed grazing systems are not fully understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of either mono‐ or co‐grazing of sheep and cattle on swards differing in botanical composition (either diverse or grass‐dominated) on the intake choices of six target forage species. Jacobs' selection index (JSI) was employed to quantify the preference for single target species in relation to their proportion in the sward. Results revealed distinct intake preferences of sheep and cattle; as expected, sheep were more selective than cattle. To a lesser extent, the sward composition had an effect on intake preferences: cattle responded to botanical composition by changing their intake preferences, but to a lesser extent than sheep. Phleum pratense was the most preferred target forage species (JSI = 0.62). Lolium perenne, Taraxacum sect. Ruderale and Trifolium repens were also highly preferred regardless of sward composition or type of grazing (JSI = 0.47, 0.32 and 0.27 respectively). Dactylis glomerata and Festuca pratensis tended to increase in abundance after grazing events in both diverse and grass‐dominated swards. Co‐grazing of cattle and sheep facilitated a more homogeneous consumption of the target forage species evaluated.  相似文献

In 1998, seeds of four cultivated native perennial grasses, Bromus inermis (B), Clinelymus nutans (C), Elymus nutans (E) and Agropyron cristatum (A), were sown as mixtures with different seed rates in three combinations (B + C, B + E + A and B + E + C + A) in a field study in the north‐eastern part of the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, China. A grazing experiment was conducted in 2000 to investigate the performance of these grass mixtures at leaf, plant and sward scales under different grazing intensities (GI). Four GIs, expressed as the proportion of herbage consumed by Tibetan lambs in relation to the available biomass (IP), were applied in the summer: no grazing, and 0·30, 0·50 and 0·70 of IP. Tiller numbers of the grasses increased and leaf photosynthetic rate, sward leaf area index (LAI) and herbage mass declined with increase in GI. No effect of GI on specific leaf area was observed. Interactions between GI and grass mixtures on the dynamics of species composition, swards’ LAI and herbage mass were found. Large fluctuations in species composition with different GIs showed the poor species compatibility and sward persistence of these grass mixtures under high GI by sheep.  相似文献

Multispecies swards, comprised of different plant functional groups have comparable production potential to high N input L. perenne swards at reduced N when legumes are included. However, information on the appropriate management of multispecies swards is limited. The effect of differing management practices on the herbage dry-matter (DM) production and botanical composition of different sward types was investigated using a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design plot experiment. The experiment consisted of three sward types: L. perenne-only receiving (LP; 250 kg N ha−1 a−1); L. perenne-Trifolium repens (LP-TR); multispecies sward containing L. perenne, Phleum pratense, Trifolium repens, Trifolium pratense, Plantago lanceolata and Cichorium intybus (MSS). LP-TR and MSS received 90 kg N ha−1 a−1. Harvesting of plot herbage took place every 21 or 28 days to a defoliation height of 4 or 6 cm, over two growing seasons (March to November 2020 and 2021 inclusive). Annual herbage produced by both LP and LP-TR was not significantly affected by defoliation frequency. However, MSS produced 1923 kg DM ha−1 a−1 more herbage when harvested less frequently. Unsown species contributed significantly less to the herbage DM of MSS compared to LP and LP-TR and remained similar in 2020 and 2021, whereas the contribution of unsown species to herbage DM increased in LP and LP-TR from 2020 to 2021, with noxious species more associated with LP and LP-TR than MSS. Results demonstrate the role of multispecies swards in improving the sustainability of grass-based agricultural systems in an environment of reduced fertilizer inputs.  相似文献

Cutting height is an important factor controlling the yield and persistence of grass swards harvested for conserved feed. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of four cutting heights (5, 10, 15 and 20 cm) on the yield, composition and productivity based on deviation from a size/density compensation line for swards of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) and an orchardgrass/alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) mixture harvested nine times over three growing seasons. Yield was greatest for the 5 cm cutting height through the course of the experiment but ground cover of orchardgrass declined. Prior to the final harvest, tiller weight and density were determined. The 10‐, 15‐ and 20‐cm treatments fell on an apparent size/density compensation line with slope ‐1·779 (R2 = ·99; = ·008) while the 5‐cm treatment fell considerably below that line indicating a reduction in productivity or relative persistence. Harvest at 10 cm appears to optimize yield while maintaining stand productivity in infrequently harvested orchardgrass swards.  相似文献

Dry matter (DM) production of multispecies swards compared to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne; PRG) swards under intensive grazing warrants investigation as it is relatively unknown. A 5 × 2 factorial experiment, with five sward types and two defoliation methods, was used to investigate the effect of grazing versus cutting on dry matter (DM) production of multispecies and PRG‐only swards. Five sward types were established namely: a PRG‐only sward, receiving 250 kg N ha?1 year?1 (PRG250), and a PRG‐only sward (PRG90), a two‐species sward with PRG and white clover (Trifolium repens; PRGWC), a six‐species sward (6S) and a nine‐species sward (9S), each receiving 90 kg N ha?1 year?1. Cutting plots measured 1.95 × 10 m and grazing plots measured 10 × 10 m. All plots were harvested concurrently every 21–30 days from April‐November for two years (2015 and 2016). A strip from the grazing plots was cut for DM yield determination prior to turning in cattle for grazing. There was an interaction between sward type and defoliation method (p < .01), whereby there was no effect of defoliation method on the PRG‐only swards, however, the annual DM production of PRGWC, 6S and 9S swards reduced under grazing compared to cutting (p < .001; on average 1,929 kg DM/ha lower). Multispecies swards had lower DM production under grazing compared to cutting, while the DM yield of PRG‐only swards was unaffected by defoliation method.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of genotypic variation in ryegrasses on sward structure, bite dimensions and intake rate by dairy cows were investigated. Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, swards were in a vegetative state whereas, in Experiment 2, they were partly reproductive and were taller with higher herbage mass but lower leaf proportion than in Experiment 1. Applicability of relationships between sward structure and bite characteristics, previously established from artificial or hand‐constructed swards, to field conditions were tested. Additional short‐term intake rates and/or sward structural characteristics were considered as indicators of potential intake for use in protocols for the evaluation of grass varieties. Four cultivars were studied: AberElan, Twins (diploid and tetraploid perennial ryegrasses respectively), Polly, a hybrid ryegrass (perennial × Italian ryegrass) and Multimo (Italian ryegrass), each established in 200‐m2 plots in four replicated blocks. Herbage intake rate was determined by short‐term liveweight change (taking account of insensible weight loss) using 16 dairy cows allocated to four balanced groups with each plot grazed by one group for a 1‐h assessment period. One block was grazed per day, over a 4‐d experimental period, with each group grazing each variety in a complete crossover design. Sward characteristics and bite rate were also measured in both experiments. Bite dimensions were subsequently estimated, with bite depth being determined as a function of extended tiller height (ETH) in both experiments. Within both experiments, bite mass and intake rate did not differ significantly between swards of different cultivars despite swards containing Multimo generally having a higher ETH and water‐soluble carbohydrate concentration and lower green leaf mass, sward bulk density and neutral‐detergent fibre concentration than the other swards. However, bite depth was significantly higher (P < 0·01) in swards containing Multimo swards than in the others and, in Experiment 1, bite depth, as a proportion of ETH, was higher in swards containing Multimo and lower in those containing Twins than in the other two cultivars, whereas there was no difference in Experiment 2. Taking both experiments together, the mean bite depth was 0·5 of ETH with sward bulk density accounting for almost half the variance in the relationship between bite depth and ETH. The bulk density of the bite (bite mass per unit bite volume), measured in Experiment 2, followed a similar pattern to sward bulk density, increasing in the order Multimo, Polly, AberElan and Twins. It is concluded that the relationships between sward characteristics and bite dimensions, derived from artificial swards, are applicable to field swards, although the range in natural ryegrass sward characteristics is usually not as wide as in experiments using artificial swards. Lack of precision in the measurement of short‐term intake and in sward‐based measurements is likely to preclude their use in the evaluation of grass varieties.  相似文献

The combined benefits of a high crude protein concentration, and possible protein protection and growth‐promoting properties, make forage legumes potentially attractive as a natural means of increasing liveweight gain and time to slaughter of lambs in lamb finishing systems. An experiment was conducted to compare the production performance and meat quality of grazing lambs finished on red clover (Trifolium pratense), lucerne (Medicago sativa) or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) swards. Replicate (n = 2) swards of red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass were rotationally grazed by ten ram lambs and ten ewe lambs from weaning until selection for slaughter at UK fat class 3L. Lambs grazing the red clover sward had a significantly higher liveweight gain and required significantly fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the lucerne sward (305 g d?1 vs. 243 g d?1; 38 d vs. 50 d), which in turn had a higher liveweight gain and required fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (184 g d?1; 66 d). Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards had significantly higher herbage intakes than those grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (2·06, 1·72 and 1·16 kg DM d?1 respectively), but in vivo digestibility of herbage was similar. Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards also had significantly higher serum urea concentrations than those grazing ryegrass (12·5, 11·1 and 6·2 mmol L?1 respectively). Killing‐out percentage was significantly higher for lambs grazing the red clover sward than for lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (48% vs. 46%). There were no significant effects of finishing system on meat flavour, but meat from lambs finished on the lucerne sward was oxidatively less stable than that from lambs finished on the perennial ryegrass sward. Grazing the forage legume swards significantly increased the proportion of linoleic and linolenic acid in muscle tissue, and therefore the proportion of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids (0·19, 0·16 and 0·12 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). However, the n?6/n?3 ratio was significantly lower for the muscle of lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward compared with those grazing the forage legume swards (1·13, 1·08 and 0·98 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). The results indicate that by grazing lambs on forage legume swards it is possible to increase individual lamb performance without compromising meat quality.  相似文献

Brachiaria and Cynodon are two of the most important pasture grasses worldwide. Computer model simulations can be used to study pasture species growth and physiological aspects to identify gaps of knowledge for genetic improvement and management strategies. The objective of this research was to compare the performance relative to calibrated parameters of the CROPGRO‐Perennial Forage Model (CROPGRO‐PFM) for simulating three different species (“Marandu” palisadegrass, “Convert HD 364 ® ” brachiariagrass and “Tifton 85” bermudagrass) grown under similar management. The field experiment consisted of two harvest frequencies, 28 and 42 days, under irrigated and rainfed conditions. Data used to calibrate the model included regular forage harvests, plant‐part composition, leaf photosynthesis, leaf area index, light interception and plant nitrogen concentration. The simulation of biomass production of the three grasses presented d‐statistic values higher than 0.80, RMSE ranging from 313 to 619 kg/ha and ratio observed/simulated ranging 0.968 to 1.027. Harvest frequency treatments of 28 and 42 days were well simulated by the model. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the most influential parameters needed for model calibration and to contrast the grasses, showing that the differences among the three grasses are mostly driven by plant‐part composition and assimilate partitioning among plant organs.  相似文献

Results are presented to show the effect of white clover (Trifolium repens) and of applied N on the hotanical composition of swards sown with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perernne), timothy (Phleum pratense), meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) and mixtures of two and three of these species. White clover had a more favourahle effect on the growth of perennial ryegrass than on either timothy or meadow fescue both in terms of yield and in terms of tiller numbers. Tiller numbers of rough-stalked meadow grass (Poa trivialis) were increased and tiller numbers of Agrostis species were reduced by application of N and by inclusion of clover. Intake and performance of sheep or cattle grazing legume‐based swards were assessed over 2 years at four locations in Europe with different climatic conditions: Sardinia (Italy), southern France, northern Germany and south‐west England (UK). Legume species were sown in mixtures with locally appropriate companion grass species. Standard legume species commonly used at the location (Medicago polymorpha in Italy, Medicago sativa in France, and Trifolium repens in Germany and UK) were compared with two alternative legume species characterized by different agronomic or nutritional characteristics. They were: Trifolium subterraneum and Hedysarum coronarium in Italy; Trifolium incarnatum and Onobrychis sativa in France; Trifolium pratense and Lotus corniculatus in Germany; and Trifolium ambiguum and L. corniculatus in the UK. Lactating milk sheep in Italy, non‐lactating ewes in southern France, growing cattle in Germany, and ewes and lambs in the UK were used in three replicates per treatment. Intake and performance of sheep and cattle in various treatments varied with location, year and period within year. In Germany, intake and performance by cattle were not affected by treatment. In contrast, at the other locations, sheep grazing standard or alternative legume species known to contain condensed tannins (sulla, sainfoin and birdsfoot trefoil) had higher proportions of legume and crude protein (CP) concentrations in the diet and higher CP intakes than those grazing the other alternative legume species. Sheep performance paralleled these results. It is concluded that there is potential for a greater use of alternative legume species, at least for sheep‐grazing systems, in both the Mediterranean and cool temperate zones of Europe.  相似文献

Oat and ryegrass intercropping in pastures is widely used in regions with subtropical climates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tiller size/density compensation mechanisms in monoculture and intercropping swards of black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb cv. IAPAR 61) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. cv common) under intermittent grazing. Treatments (black oat, annual ryegrass and their mixture) were assigned according to a complete randomized block design with four replicates. Ryegrass, oat and intercropped pastures were grazed when the swards reached a height of 17, 25 and 23 cm, respectively, and with a level of defoliation of 40%. The aerial biomass was determined with a rising plate meter, and the tiller population density (TPD) was estimated by counting tillers in three 10 cm diameter PVC rings per paddock. The mass per tiller was estimated based on the aerial biomass and the TPD of each paddock. Total herbage production did not differ among treatments, with values around 7400 kg DM ha?1. TPD decreased and mass per tiller increased linearly in the monoculture treatments. Tiller size/density compensation was observed in the three plant communities (treatments) according to the self‐thinning rule. In addition, no relationships were found when each species was analysed individually in the intercrop treatment. The results suggest that species in grass mixed swards adjust their population to keep a relatively constant leaf area index (LAI) over the grazing seasons, and that would help pastures to stabilize herbage production.  相似文献

The study was designed to test the hypothesis that grazing management in early season could alter sward structure to facilitate greater animal performance during critical periods. The effects of grazing a mixed perennial ryegrass/white clover sward at different sward surface heights, by cattle or sheep, in early season on sward composition and structure, and on the performance of weaned lambs when they subsequently grazed these swards in late season were determined. In two consecutive years, from mid‐May until mid‐July, replicate plots (three plots per treatment) were grazed by either suckler cows and calves or ewes and lambs at 4 or 8 cm sward surface heights (Phase 1). From mid‐August (Year 1) or early August (Year 2), weaned lambs continuously grazed, for a period of 36 d (Year 1) or 43 d (Year 2) (Phase 2), the same swards maintained at 4 cm (treatment 4–4), 8 cm (treatment 8–8) or swards which had been allowed to increase from 4 to 8 cm (treatment 4–8). Grazing by both cattle and sheep at a sward surface height of 4 cm compared with 8 cm in Phase 1 resulted in a higher (P < 0·001) number of vegetative grass tillers per m2 in Phase 2, although the effect was more pronounced after grazing by sheep. Sheep grazing at 8 cm in Phase 1 produced a higher number of reproductive tillers per m2 and a greater mass of reproductive stem (P < 0·001) than the other treatment combinations. The mass of white clover lamina was higher under cattle grazing (P < 0·05), especially on the 8‐cm treatment, and white clover accounted for a greater proportion of the herbage mass. These effects had mainly disappeared by the end of Phase 2. On the 4–4 and 8–8 sward height treatments the liveweight gain of the weaned lambs was higher (P < 0·05) on the swards previously grazed by cattle than those grazed by sheep. The proportion of white clover in the diet and the herbage intake also tended to be higher when the weaned lambs followed cattle. However, there was no difference in liveweight gain, proportion of white clover in the diet or herbage intake between swards previously grazed by cattle or sheep on the 4–8 sward height treatment. It is concluded that grazing grass/white clover swards by cattle compared with sheep for the first half of the grazing season resulted in less reproductive grass stem and a slightly higher white clover content in the sward, but these effects are transient and disappear from the sward by the end of the grazing season. They can also be eliminated by a short period of rest from grazing in mid‐season. Nevertheless these changes in sward structure can increase the performance of weaned lambs when they graze these swards in late season.  相似文献

Persistence assessments on eight mid-season and ten late cultivars of perennial ryegrass were made at the end of the second, third and fourth years after sowing. Botanical analyses were carried out on the herbage from plots cut in the fourth year and these results related lo the different persistence assessments. It was found that persistence assessments carried out at the end of the second year enabled predictions to be made about botanical composition of cuitivars in the fourth year. Little extra precision was gained by delaying assessment until the third or fourth years as the ranking order of cultivars with respect to persistence remained largely unchanged. All persistence assessments were positively correlated with yields of sown cultivars and negatively correlated with yields of unsown herbage species in the fourth year. However, only low correlation coefficients were obtained between persistence assessments and the total yield of sown cultivar and unsown species in the fourth year, due to yield substitution between these two components. In swards sown as monocultures low persistence in a cultivar is considered to be a lack of perenniality and tiller regeneration rather than poor competitive ability against volunteer species though in mixed swards competitive ability per se will have considerable influence upon the changes in botanical composition under different managements. Persistence and yield capacity are seen, however, as distinct characteristics of a cuitivar and long-term yield potential is a joint function of these characteristics.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in herbage mass and herbage quality of legume‐based swards under grazing by sheep or cattle were investigated at four locations in climatically different zones of Europe: Sardinia (Italy), southern France, northern Germany and south‐west England (UK). At each location standard treatments were applied to legumes typical of species widely used in each locality: Medicago polymorpha in Italy, Medicago sativa in France, and Trifolium repens in Germany and in UK. At each site comparisons were made of two other legumes: Trifolium subterraneum and Hedysarum coronarium in Italy, Onobrychis sativa and Trifolium incarnatum in France, Trifolium pratense and Lotus corniculatus in Germany, and Trifolium ambiguum and L. corniculatus in UK. Legumes were sown in mixture with locally appropriate companion grasses, and measurements were made over two or three grazing periods. In Italy M. polymorpha swards gave the greatest herbage mass in grazing period 1 but H. coronarium was more persistent. At the French site all legumes established poorly with no significant herbage mass differences between treatments. At both the UK and German sites L. corniculatus maintained a high proportion of legume in the sward; T. repens showed poor persistence under continuous sheep grazing in UK but persisted under cattle grazing in Germany, while T. ambiguum was slow to establish in the UK, and T. pratense proved to be of comparable herbage mass to the standard T. repens‐based sward in the last year of the experiment. The concentration of crude protein and in vitro digestibility of organic matter in the dry matter of herbage showed greater within‐season variation than between treatments at each site. It is concluded that, in addition to currently used species, legume‐based swards containing H. coronarium, O. sativa and L. corniculatus all have potential to contribute to forage production for low‐input grazing and their use merits further consideration in systems of livestock production in Europe.  相似文献

The potential of imaging spectroscopy for the assessment of seasonal dry‐matter (DM) yield and sward quality was studied. Relationships between spatial heterogeneity of tiller density, light interception, ground cover and seasonal DM yield were developed. Sward heterogeneity was quantified by the spatial standard deviation of ground cover and of logarithmically transformed ground cover, and patterns in ground cover transects were quantified by wavelet entropy. An experiment was conducted with eight control (C) swards, eight naturally damaged (ND) swards and twelve artificially damaged (AD) swards. Swards were established in containers and spectroscopic images were recorded twice weekly. Seasonal DM yield was linearly related to a combination of means of ground cover and index of reflection intensity (r2 = 0·93). Spatial variation of tiller density was larger for AD and ND swards than for C swards. Values of the spatial standard deviation of ground cover and wavelet entropy were larger for AD and ND swards than for C swards. A single spatial standard deviation of ground cover value of 13% discriminated ND and AD swards from C swards. Seasonal means of wavelet entropy (r2 = 0·70) and the spatial standard deviation of ground cover (r2 = 0·63) at harvest were linearly related to seasonal DM yield. It is concluded that imaging spectroscopy can be used for assessing seasonal DM yield and sward heterogeneity.  相似文献

To maintain species-rich swards from which forage of a high nutritional quality can be produced, it is essential to adapt grassland fertilization strategies. In this study, we investigated how different long-term mineral fertilization treatments affect dry-matter (DM) yield, plant species composition, and nutrient and mineral concentrations of forage from mountain grasslands. During 2 years, forage was sampled from three different long-term fertilization experiments located at 930 (L), 1,190 (M) and 1,340 (H) m a.s.l. at different sites in Switzerland. At each site, three mineral fertilization treatments (0, PK and NPK) had been maintained for three to six decades, with two (L and M) or three harvests (H) per year. Yield, the botanical composition and concentrations of net energy, utilizable crude protein and different phenolic fractions were determined. Nutrient and mineral concentrations were also determined. For all three sites (L, M and H), unfertilized swards had lower annual DM yields (3.39, 5.17 and 2.73 t/ha) compared to PK (6.33, 7.17 and 4.44 t/ha) and NPK fertilized swards (7.69, 7.22 and 7.44 t/ha), respectively. Long-term fertilization had little effect on the gross nutrient and phenolic composition, but forage P and K concentration increased. The decades-long fertilization of either PK or NPK of up to 85 kg N, 80 kg P2O5 and 240 kg K2O/ha reduced plant species richness only at site H. Fertilization of PK may allow to simultaneously increase forage productivity and maintain forage quality in mountain grasslands.  相似文献
