Extending the grazing season through the production and utilization of high‐quality forage is a key objective in grassland‐based dairy production systems. Grazing swards to a low post‐grazing sward height (PGSH) is a strategy for improving grass utilization. A grazing experiment conducted in Ireland investigated immediate and subsequent effects of PGSH on sward production, utilization and structural characteristics. Swards were grazed to 2·7 cm (severe; S1) or 3·5 cm (moderate; M1) from 10 February to 18 April 2010 (Period 1; P1). From 19 April, each P1 paddock was halved and grazed to either 3·8 cm (S2) or 4·8 cm (M2), until 30 October (Period 2; P2). The first grazing rotation was +7 d on S1 swards compared with M1 swards (45 d), due to greater herbage utilization (+0·22). Herbage production during P1 was not affected by PGSH but a severe PGSH during this period reduced subsequent herbage production: 13·9 (S1) vs. 15·5 t dry matter (DM) ha?1 (M1) by the end of the study. Leaf proportion was increased (+0·10) on S2 swards compared with M2 swards, but M2 swards produced 1·2 t DM ha?1 more herbage during P2. Despite the relatively lower level of sward utilization obtained from moderate grazing in P1 (3·5 cm) and P2 (4·5–5·0 cm), such levels of PGSH increased DM production while maintaining sward quality, compared with severe grazing (2·7 cm in P1 and 3·5–4·0 cm in P2).  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of an early (February; F) or delayed (April; A) primary spring grazing date and two stocking rates, high (H) and medium (M), on the grazing management, dry matter (DM) intake of grass herbage and milk production of spring‐calving dairy cows grazing a perennial ryegrass sward in the subsequent summer. Sixty‐four Holstein‐Friesian dairy cows (mean of 58 d in milk) were assigned to one of four grazing treatments (n = 16) which were imposed from 12 April to 3 July 2004. Cows on the early spring‐grazing treatment were grazed at 5·5 cows ha?1 (treatment FH) and 4·5 cows ha?1 (treatment FM) while cows on the late‐grazing treatment were grazed at 6·4 cows ha?1 (treatment AH) and 5·5 cows ha?1 (treatment AM). The organic matter digestibility and crude protein concentration of the grass herbage were higher on the early‐grazing treatment than on the late‐grazing treatment. The cows on the FM treatment had significantly (P < 0·001) higher milk (24·5 kg), solids‐corrected milk (22·5 kg), fat (P < 0·01, 918 g) and protein (831 g) yields than the other three treatments. Cows on the FM treatment had a higher (P < 0·001) DM intake of grass herbage by 2·3 kg DM per cow per day than cows on the AH treatment, which had a DM intake significantly lower than all other treatments (15·2 kg DM per cow per day). The results of the present study showed that grazing in early spring has a positive effect on herbage quality in subsequent grazing rotations. The study also concluded that early spring‐grazed swards stocked at a medium stocking rate (4·5 cows ha?1; FM) resulted in the highest DM intake of grass herbage and milk production.  相似文献

The objectives of this experiment were to study the effects of different grazing managements in spring on herbage intake and performance of summer-calving dairy cows and to examine the effects of regrowth in early June on herbage intake and cow performance. Four spring-grazing treatments were applied to predominantly perennial ryegrass swards: Control (C), sward grazed by cows to 6–8 cm sward surface height (SSH); CG16, sward grazed by cows to 3–4 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to a target SSH of 16cm in early June; CG8, sward grazed by cows to 3–4 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to 8cm in early June; and SG8, sward grazed by sheep to 2–3 cm SSH in May and allowed to regrow to 8 cm in early June, All swards were continuously stocked by summer-calving (May and July) primiparous and multiparous cows from 16 June to 7 September, to a target SSH of 8–10cm. Spring treatments bad marked effects on herbage intakes and milk production. Estimated in July by n alkane analysis, the mean herbage intake ± s.e.d. of cows on each treatment were 1·8, 1·4, 1·4 and 3·0 ± 0·31 kg dry matter (DM) 100 kg live weight (LW)?1 d?1 (P < 0·01) for treatments C, CG16, CG8 and SG8 respectively. Measured in August, intakes were 1·8, 20, 2·1 and 2·4 ± O·33kg DM 100kg LW?1 d?1 respectively. Severe spring grazing led to increased milk yield and reduced milk fat content from summer-calving cows fed 5·2 kg d?1 of a proprietary concentrate. Average milk yields for the eleven experimental cows on each treatment were 24·3, 23·4, 26·2 and 29·0 ± 1·20 kgd?1 (P < 0·01) for C, CG16, CG8 and SG8, and average milk fat contents were 45·4. 42·4, 43·9 and 40·9 ± 1·02gkg?1 (P<0·05) respectively. The results suggest that severe grazing of swards in early season could improve herbage intake and milk yield of summer-calving cows in mid- and late season. The most favourable spring treatment in this respect was severe grazing by sheep. However, this advantage could be negated in midseason by lax grazing at that time.  相似文献

The effect of sward structure of four temperate grass species on the bite mass of cattle was evaluated. Micro‐swards (79 cm × 47 cm; approximately the area of a feeding station) of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), quackgrass [Elymus repens (L.) Gould], meadow fescue [Schedonorus pratensis (Huds.) P. Beauv] and reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) were offered to Holstein dairy cows in short‐term grazing sessions in 2006 and 2007 using a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Cows were allowed to take fifty bites in each session. Bite mass was calculated by dividing the adjusted change in weight of the micro‐sward by the number of bites. Sward surface height, bulk density and distribution of herbage dry matter (DM) in the canopy were measured pre‐ and post‐grazing. Sward structure differed among the grass species within years but bite mass (on a fresh or DM basis) was not affected. Higher surface heights and bulk densities in 2006 compared with 2007 (averaged across grass species) resulted in greater bite masses of DM in 2006. Values were 25·7 cm vs. 17·0 cm for surface height; 1219 g m?3 vs. 926 g m?3 for bulk density; and 1·05 g DM bite?1 vs. 0·50 g DM bite?1 for 2006 and 2007 respectively. Within the context of this study, differences between years in bite mass, associated with greater changes in sward structure, were more important than differences among grass species.  相似文献

An experiment was designed to examine the changes in clover content of three mixed perennial ryegrass/white cover swards of differing initial clover contents subjected to different grazing height management regimes and their effect on lactation performance of 48 Friesian dairy cows and heifers. Two paddocks were established for each treatment and grazed on alternate days. Treatments T17 and Tl3 consisted of swards with initial clover contents of 0·17 and 0·13 of the dry matter (DM) mass, respectively, grazed to maintain compressed sward heights of 6 cm throughout the season. A third treatment, SI5, consisted of a sward with an initial clover content of 0·15 grazed to maintain a compressed sward height of 4·5 cm for the first 78 days of the grazing season (period 1). Throughout period 1, half the animals on each treatment each received 4 kg of a concentrate supplement daily, while the others remained unsupplemented. From days 79 to 90, the cattle on treatment S15 grazed a similar sward, while the compressed sward height of the S15 paddocks was allowed to increase to 6 cm before re introduction of the animals. The three swards were then grazed for a further 47 days (period 2) before the animals were housed and milk yield recorded for a further 63 days (period 3). While sward T17 showed little change in clover content over the first 29 days of grazing, remaining at just below 0·18 of DM mass, swards T13 and S15 showed a marked decline in clover content to 0·05 and 0·07 of DM mass respectively. However, by the end of period 1 the clover content of all three swards had increased markedly (0·25, 0·15 and 0·15 of DM mass respectively). By the end of period 2, clover proportions were slightly higher than initial values (0·19. 0·15 and 0·15 of DM mass for treatments T17, T13 and S15, respectively). Owing to the relatively small differences in clover content of swards TI7 and T13, there were no significant effects of these two treatments on milk yield or composition in any period. Supplementation had no effect on milk composition and had little effect on milk yield, except when sward height was maintained at 4·5 cm. There was no carryover effect of supplementation on milk yield or composition in periods 2 or 3.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to examine the effects of grazing severity on the performance of January/February calved British Friesian dairy cows. In Experiment 1, three groups of cows were rotationally grazed across twenty-four one-day paddocks with high (H), medium (M) or low (L) herbage allowances. Cows on treatment M were offered a daily herbage allowance designed to achieve a residual sward height of 50 mm, assessed by a rising-plate sward stick. The daily herbage allowance (g organic matter (kg live-weight)-1 on treatments L and H were 0.30 below and above that for M, respectively, to give residual sward heights of 42 and 59 mm. In Experiment 2, three groups of cows were grazed across twenty-four one-day paddocks to obtain residual sward heights of 50 mm (severe), 60 mm (moderate) and 80 mm (lax). Average milk yields on the L, M and H treatments in Experiment 1 were 11.8, 14.6 and 14.5 kg d,-1 and in Experiment 2 they were 13.7, 16.0 and 17.0 kg d-1 on the severe, moderate and lax treatments, respectively. The results indicate that the critical herbage height below which milk production per cow declines may vary with the production potential of the animal. There were no significant treatment effects on milk composition. Milk output ha-1 and utilized metabolizable energy ha-1 were greatest with the low herbage allowance in Experiment I and the moderate treatment in Experiment 2. Net herbage accumulation on the severe treatment in Experiment 2 was 30% lower than that on the lax treatment, as a result of treading damage in early season. It is concluded that, in a rotational grazing system, a reasonable compromise between sward utilization and animal performance can be achieved by grazing January/February calved cows to a residual sward height of 60 mm as assessed by a rising-plate sward stick. This is equivalent to a sward surface height of about 80 mm.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to use diurnal and temporal changes in herbage composition to create two pasture diets with contrasting ratios of water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and crude protein (CP) and compare milk production and nitrogen‐use efficiency (NUE) of dairy cows. A grazing experiment using thirty‐six mid‐lactation Friesian x Jersey cows was conducted in late spring in Canterbury, New Zealand. Cows were offered mixed perennial ryegrass and white clover pastures either in the morning after a short 19‐day regrowth interval (SR AM) or in the afternoon after a long 35‐day regrowth interval (LR PM). Pasture treatments resulted in lower pasture mass and greater herbage CP concentration (187 vs. 171 g kg?1 DM) in the SR AM compared with the LR PM but did not affect WSC (169 g kg?1 DM) or the ratio of WSC/CP (1·0 g g?1). Cows had similar apparent DM (17·5 kg DM cow?1 d?1) and N (501 g N cow?1 d?1) intake for both treatments. Compared with SR AM cows, LR PM cows had lower milk (18·5 vs. 21·2 kg cow?1 d?1), milk protein (0·69 vs. 0·81 kg cow?1 d?1) and milk solids (1·72 and 1·89 kg cow?1 d?1) yield. Urinary N concentration was increased in SR AM, but estimated N excretion and NUE for milk were similar for both treatments. Further studies are required to determine the effect of feeding times on diurnal variation in urine volume and N concentration under grazing to predict urination events with highest leaching risk.  相似文献

Low rates of herbage dry matter (DM) intake impose limits on total daily DM intake in grazing dairy cows. The objective of this study was to increase total daily DM intake and milk production by restricting daily time available for grazing (TAG) and replacing it with time available for eating a maize silage/soyabean meal (TAMS) diet indoors. The treatments (TAG + TAMS) were 20 + 0, 19 + 1, 10 + 10 and 5 + 15 h. Measurements were made of milk production, intake and feeding behaviour. The interactions of TAG + TAMS treatments with sward height (SH) and concentrate level (CL) were also examined. Two experiments, each lasting 42 days, were carried out in spring ( Experiment 1 ) and autumn ( Experiment 2 ) using forty‐eight and twenty‐four Holstein‐Friesian cows respectively. Treatments were arranged in a factorial design with TAG + TAMS treatments, SH ( Experiment 1 only) and CL as the independent variables and a TAG + TAMS of 20 h. Reducing TAG and increasing TAMS significantly reduced estimated herbage DM intake and significantly increased maize silage/soyabean meal intake in both experiments, but there were no significant main effects of TAG + TAMS treatments on milk yield (mean, 27·4 and 25·5 kg d?1 for Experiments 1 and 2 respectively), and yield of milk constituents. Increasing SH ( Experiment 1 ) and CL ( Experiments 1 and 2 ) significantly increased milk yield. In Experiment 1 , there was a significant interaction between TAG + TAMS treatments and SH with the taller sward height of 8–10 cm and the 20 + 0 treatment having the highest milk yield (29·7 kg d?1) and the 5 + 15 treatment the lowest (27·2 kg d?1), whereas at the lower sward height of 4–6 cm, milk yield was lowest on the 20 + 0 treatment (25·5 kg d?1) with the other three treatments being higher (mean, 26·9 kg d?1). Replacing TAG with TAMS significantly increased liveweight gain in Experiment 1 but not in Experiment 2 . Estimated rates of intake of herbage were lower in the autumn experiment ( Experiment 2 , 9·6 g DM min ?1) than in the spring experiment ( Experiment 1 , 29·4 g DM min ?1) but rates of intake of maize silage were higher in the autumn (112·4 g DM min?1) than in the spring (72·5 g DM min?1). In conclusion, in spring the response to replacing TAG with TAMS was dependent on sward conditions with the highest milk fat plus protein yield being on the 20 + 0 treatment at the high sward height and on the 19 + 1 treatment at the low sward height. The high liveweight gain of the 5 + 15 treatment could be an important means of restoring body condition in grazing lactating cows. In autumn, intakes of herbage were low in spite of its high estimated nutritive value with all treatments having a similar level of performance.  相似文献

Herbage allowance is one of the important pasture factors in the determination of intake by grazing livestock. Ingestive behaviour of 12 adult Angus cows (Bos taurus) was measured over a range of allowances (0·25 to 0·72 kg dry matter (DM) per 100 kg live weight (LW) for a 1-h period) of vegetative tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). A balanced change-over design was used to estimate direct, residual and permanent effects of herbage allowance on rate of DM intake, rate of biting and herbage DM intake per bite. In Experiment 1, herbage DM intake per meal increased linearly from 0·68 to 1·72 kg (100 kg LW)?1 as DM allowance increased from 0·25 to 0·72 kg (100 kg LW)?1 h?1. Cows grazed at ·30 kg (100 kg LW)?1 h?1 and stopped grazing when the sward was reduced to a height about 10 to 12 cm above the soil surface, approximately defined by the tops of pseudostems. In Experiment 2, herbage DM intake rates of 0·29, 0·47 and 0·42 kg (100 kg LW)?1 h?1 were recorded as cows grazed allowances of 0·43, 0·70 and 0·90 kg (100 kg LW)?1 h?1 for most of the 1-h grazing period. Limiting herbage DM allowances in Experiment 2 were associated with small reductions in rate of biting and herbage DM intake per bite as allowance declined. Sward DM density (>5 cm) was an important variable in the determination of herbage DM intake rates at lower herbage allowances.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out during 1984 to examine the effects of three alternative grazing strategies for January/February calved British Friesian dairy eows on sward and animal production. Cows were rotationally grazed across 1 d paddocks without concentrate supplementation from 30 April to 1 October. A flexible grazing (EG) treatment involved manipulating residual herbage height, as assessed by a rising-plate sward stick, with cows initially grazing to 80 mm, reducing to 60 mm when milk yield declined below 20 kg d?1 and finally to 50 mm when milk yield declined below 15 kgd?1. Control (C) cows grazed to a constant residual herbage height of 60 mm throughout the season (a 60-inm rising-plate sward stick height is equivalent to a sward surface height of approximately 80 mm). On a further treatment a leader/follower (LF) approach was used, with cows paired for calving date and parity and within pairs allocated to either a high-(leader) or a low-yielding (follower) group, according to milk yield at turnout, with the leader group grazing 1 d ahead of the follower group. Overall stocking rates on C and LE treatments were identical but herbage allowances differed as a result of treatment effects. Animal performance data for the FG, C and LE treatments, respectively, were: milk yield (kg d?1) 14·5, 14·7 and 16·0 (s.e. 0·59); milk fat yield (g d?1) 577, 571 and 637 (s.e. 29); milk protein yield (g d?1) 528, 527 and 576 (s.e. 19); and liveweight gain (kg d?1) 0·09, 0·20 and 0·14 (s.e. 0·04). Overall, there was no benefit in animal production following lax grazing in spring even with high-yielding cows, and this approach resulted in the accumulation of stem and senescent material in the sward in mid-season. However, preferential treatment of high-yielding cows by grazing as a leader group in a leader-follower system resulted in higher milk production, particularly in late season, with an overall improvement in milk yield for the LF treatment of 9% relative to treatment C.  相似文献

A 2‐year whole‐farm system study compared the accumulation, utilization and nutritive value of grass in spring‐calving grass‐based systems differing in stocking rate (SR) and calving date (CD). Six treatments (systems) were compared over two complete grazing seasons. Stocking rates used in the study were low (2·5 cows ha?1), medium (2·9 cows ha?1) and high (3·3 cows ha?1), respectively, and mean CDs were 12 February (early) and 25 February (late). Each system had its own farmlet of eighteen paddocks and one herd that remained on the same farmlet area for the duration of the study. Stocking rate had a small effect on total herbage accumulation (11 860 kg DM ha?1 year?1), but had no effect on total herbage utilization (11 700 kg DM ha?1 year?1). Milk and milk solids (MS; fat + protein) production per ha increased by 2580 and 196 kg ha?1 as SR increased from 2·5 to 3·3 cows ha?1. Milk production per ha and net herbage accumulation and utilization were unaffected by CD. Winter feed production was reduced as SR increased. Increased SR, associated with increased grazing severity, resulted in swards of increased leaf content and nutritive value. The results indicate that, although associated with increased milk production per ha, grazed grass utilization and improved sward nutritive value, the potential benefits of increased SR on Irish dairy farms can only be realized if the average level of herbage production and utilization is increased.  相似文献

Milk fatty acids (FA) were compared in mid‐lactation dairy cows in four feeding systems combining grazing management and supplementation. The four treatments were factorial combinations of compressed herbage grazed to 3·7 or 4·6 cm post‐grazing height, with or without concentrate feeding (3·6 kg cow?1 d?1). Milk yield and composition were measured for four groups of eight Friesian × Jersey dairy cows over 3 weeks in mid‐lactation for cows that had grazed treatments for 64 d from early spring. Milk yield was higher in cows fed concentrate plus herbage (23·9 kg d?1 cow?1) than cows fed herbage only (20·3 kg d?1 cow?1). Milk fat percentage was higher in cows fed herbage only (5·5%) than that fed herbage plus concentrate (5·1%). Milk protein percentage was higher in cows fed herbage plus concentrate (4·0%) than that fed herbage only (3·7%). The concentrations of conjugated linoleic acids c9, t11, C18:0, C18:1 t11 and C18:2 t9, c12 FA were lower where concentrate was fed. The concentrations of C18:1 t10, C18:1 t5, t8 and C18:2 c9, c12 FA were higher where concentrate was fed. The concentrations of C18:1 c6, C18:1 c9, C18:1 t9 and C18:3 c6,9,15 were unaffected by concentrate feeding. Post‐grazing herbage height had no significant effect on milk yield or concentration of milk FA. Provided dairy cows are harvesting leafy material of similar nutrient and FA concentration, post‐grazing herbage height does not appear to alter milk FA and the supply of high energy concentrates is more influential on milk FA profiles.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of herbage mass and daily herbage allowance (DHA) on sward characteristics and animal performance, dry‐matter intake, rumen pH and volatile fatty acid production of unsupplemented spring‐calving dairy cows throughout the main grazing season. Sixty‐eight Holstein‐Friesian dairy cows were randomly assigned across four treatments (n = 17) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Two swards were created with different levels of pre‐grazing herbage mass [allocated above 4 cm (>4 cm); 1700 kg DM ha?1 (medium; M) or 2200 kg DM ha?1 (high; H)] and two levels of DHA (>4 cm; 16 or 20 kg DM per cow d?1). An additional eight lactating ruminally cannulated Holstein–Friesian dairy cows were randomly assigned to each treatment in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design. Sward and animal measurements were collected across four periods each of 1 week duration in April and May (PI) and July and August (PII). Maintaining the medium‐mass sward across the season improved the nutritive value of the sward in the latter part of the grazing season compared with high‐mass swards, thus resulting in increased animal intakes and milk production throughout PII. The higher organic matter digestibility of the medium‐compared with high‐masses during PII indicates that grazing severity and herbage mass in the spring to mid‐summer period will determine sward quality parameters in the late summer period.  相似文献

The mechanisms that terminate meals of cattle grazing lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) are not well defined. Sub-acute bloat may lead to cessation of grazing and, consequently, surface active substances used in the treatment and prevention of bloat, such as poloxalene, may extend grazing meals and increase herbage intake. Twelve mature Angus cows (Bos taurus) were offered 0, 12·5 and 25·0 g poloxalene in 0·5 kg of crushed maize (Zea mays L.) kernels each day, immediately before two consecutive 1-h measured parts of a grazing meal on 21- to 24-day-old lucerne swards with a herbage dry matter (DM) mass (> 5 cm) of 2·03 t ha?1 and herbage DM mass allowance of 3·55 kg hd?1h?1. Total herbage DM intake was 2·52 kg hd?1 during the first hour and 1·54 kg hd?1 during the second hour of the 2-h grazing meal. Differences in herbage intake were attributable to a cessation of grazing. Mean rates of biting were 26·3 and 14·8 bites min?1 and mean DM intakes per bite were 1·82 and 4·38 g during the first and second part of meals, respectively. Poloxalene treatments caused a small linear decline in grazing time during the first part of meals and a larger increase in grazing time during the second part of meals. Lower rates of DM intake caused by poloxalene were offset by increases in grazing time. It was concluded that poloxalene moderated ingestive behaviour within grazing meals of immature lucerne and this response may have been at least partly due to the relief of sub-acute bloat.  相似文献

Development of simulation models of grazing beef cattle requires measurement of the components of the ingestive process and the establishment of relationships between these components and the structure of the sward. The ingestive behaviour of eight half-sib Angus steers (live weight (LW), x?= 270 kg) grazing alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was studied at three stages of maturity (26, 40 and 47 days of regrowth) and at four allowances of herbage dry matter (DM) (1·0, 1·5, 20 and 2·5 kg per 100 kg LW) at each of two daily grazing sessions. A tethering system of grazing was used in which the experimental unit was a tethered steer and its plot for one grazing session. Grazing sessions commenced at 08.00 and 14.00 h EDT. Intake (DM) increased linearly from 1·98 kg per steer session at a DM allowance of 1 kg (100 kg LW)?1 to 2 89 kg steer session at an allowance of 2·5 kg (100 kg LW) ?1 as utilization of herbage declined linearly from 0·69 to 0·43. Herbage DM in take per bite increased from 1 0 g at 1 kg (100 kg LW) ?1 allowance to 1·5 g at 2·5 kg (100 kg LW) ?1 allowance. Rates of biting were not affected by herbage allowance and averaged 21 bites min?1. Dry matter intake increased from 1·77 to 3 41 kg per steer session as the alfalfa matured and herbage mass changed from 1500 to 4656 kg ha?1. Mean rates of biting were 24 bites min?1 for steers grazing the youngest alfalfa and 16 bites min?1 for steers on the oldest forage. Herbage DM intakes per bite were 1·1 g and 1·7 g at the same stages. Rates of DM intake approached 2 kg h?1 and maximum daily DM intake was estimated at 2 75 kg (100 kg LW) ?1. Intake of alfalfa was limited by allowance and mass of herbage above a canopy horizon of 20 cm and, to a lesser extent, by the length of fast.  相似文献

The combined benefits of a high crude protein concentration, and possible protein protection and growth‐promoting properties, make forage legumes potentially attractive as a natural means of increasing liveweight gain and time to slaughter of lambs in lamb finishing systems. An experiment was conducted to compare the production performance and meat quality of grazing lambs finished on red clover (Trifolium pratense), lucerne (Medicago sativa) or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) swards. Replicate (n = 2) swards of red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass were rotationally grazed by ten ram lambs and ten ewe lambs from weaning until selection for slaughter at UK fat class 3L. Lambs grazing the red clover sward had a significantly higher liveweight gain and required significantly fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the lucerne sward (305 g d?1 vs. 243 g d?1; 38 d vs. 50 d), which in turn had a higher liveweight gain and required fewer days to slaughter than lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (184 g d?1; 66 d). Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards had significantly higher herbage intakes than those grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (2·06, 1·72 and 1·16 kg DM d?1 respectively), but in vivo digestibility of herbage was similar. Lambs grazing the red clover and lucerne swards also had significantly higher serum urea concentrations than those grazing ryegrass (12·5, 11·1 and 6·2 mmol L?1 respectively). Killing‐out percentage was significantly higher for lambs grazing the red clover sward than for lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward (48% vs. 46%). There were no significant effects of finishing system on meat flavour, but meat from lambs finished on the lucerne sward was oxidatively less stable than that from lambs finished on the perennial ryegrass sward. Grazing the forage legume swards significantly increased the proportion of linoleic and linolenic acid in muscle tissue, and therefore the proportion of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids (0·19, 0·16 and 0·12 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). However, the n?6/n?3 ratio was significantly lower for the muscle of lambs grazing the perennial ryegrass sward compared with those grazing the forage legume swards (1·13, 1·08 and 0·98 for the red clover, lucerne and perennial ryegrass swards respectively). The results indicate that by grazing lambs on forage legume swards it is possible to increase individual lamb performance without compromising meat quality.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PRG) sward density on seasonal and total DM yield under simulated grazing and animal grazing by cattle, and to assess the effectiveness of visually estimated ground scores (GSs) for predicting sward PRG density. The study incorporated five different seeding rates of PRG, each replicated three times, to simulate swards ranging in PRG density typical of different ages and conditions. There was no significant difference between defoliation managements for total DM yield, but sward PRG density had a significant effect on both the seasonal and total DM herbage yield under both systems. Under simulated grazing, total DM yield ranged from 10·7 to 12·0 t DM ha?1 with increasing sward PRG density at a GS range of 1·70–4·28 (mean of 2 years’ data, P < 0·01). Under animal grazing, the yield range was from 10·3 to 12·2 t DM ha?1 for a GS range of 1·50–3·39 (mean of 2 years’ data, P < 0·01). The largest differences in DM yield occurred during the spring period. The relationship between sward DM yield and GS was significant (P < 0·001) for both simulated and animal‐grazed swards. Each unit increase in midseason GS (June) related to an average yield increase of 350 kg DM ha?1 under simulated grazing and a 721 kg DM ha?1 increase under cattle grazing. Every unit increase in the GS at the end of the grazing season (December) was associated with a 460 or 1194 kg DM ha?1 increase under simulated and animal grazing, respectively. These results show that visual estimates of density were an effective tool in describing PRG density and that this could be related to DM yield potential. Further investigations may provide a threshold value below which the renewal of swards could be advised based on a visual GS of PRG.  相似文献

To allow improved prediction of daily herbage intake of dairy cows in rotational grazing systems, intake behaviour was assessed throughout the day in 24‐h paddocks. Herbage intake in 16 lactating Holstein–Friesian cows was assessed using the short‐term (1‐h) weight gain method at four predetermined natural meal times throughout the day (early morning, T1; late morning, T2; mid‐afternoon, T3; and early evening, T4). The study comprised two 4‐day experiments, each with a cross‐over design of four blocks. In both experiments, cows grazed a 24‐h paddock daily, and the effect of the immediately previous grazing experience on intake behaviour was investigated throughout the day, taking account of daily fluctuations in the short‐term physiological condition of the cows. Experiment 1 was carried out to investigate overall grazing behaviour during meals as a sward is progressively depleted during the day, with intake being assessed within the paddock and, hence, on a depleted sward. Experiment 2 similarly investigated the effect of sward depletion and physiological condition throughout the day on intake, but cows were removed to fresh, undefoliated swards during intake measurement periods; thus, intake rate was not influenced by differences in sward condition. Intake behaviour from both experiments was compared to establish the effect on herbage intake of changes in sward state and non‐sward factors. In Experiment 1, sward surface height, available herbage mass, proportion of leaf and green leaf mass declined as the day progressed. Bite mass declined with sward depletion, and mean intake rate was 1·64 kg dry matter (DM) h–1, which was significantly lower at T3 (P < 0·01) than during other meals. In Experiment 2, plot sward conditions did not change throughout the day, and intake behaviour also remained constant, with a mean intake rate of 2·11 kg DM h–1. Mean bite depth as a proportion of pregrazing extended tiller height was constant throughout the day (mean 0·32). The results show that, although cows grazed throughout the day on progressively depleted swards, indicative of rotationally grazed paddocks (Experiment 1), bite mass declined linearly and intake behaviour was variable. However, where intake was assessed on high‐quality, undefoliated swards (Experiment 2), intake behaviour was similar regardless of the time of day and the immediately previous experience. There was some indication of an interaction between the effects of the sward and the physiological condition of the animal on herbage intake.  相似文献

Two experiments are described in which two levels of winter feeding and three levels of herbage allowance during the grazing season were imposed upon March/April calving British Friesian dairy cows. The winter treatments resulted in differences in live weight and milk yield at turnout of 35 and 53 kg and 3·4 and 3·2 kg d-1 for the two trials. Subsequently, when grazed at generous herbage allowances, the cows were able to compensate for much of this difference but when herbage was restricted the milk yield differences were accentuated. Groups of cows from each winter treatment were offered 25, 50 or 75 (Experiment 1) and 30, 50 or 70 (Experiment 2) g herbage DM per kg LW daily during the grazing season. Daily herbage intakes on the three allowances in each trial were 14·1, 13·3, 10·7 and 12·5, 12·1, 11·5 kg OM and milk yields were 16·0, 15·3, 12·5 and 15·2, 14·3, 11·8 kg SCM respectively. Both intake and milk production were depressed once the cows were forced to consume more than 50% of herbage on offer or to graze the sward down to a mean height of less than 8–10 cm. Grazing behaviour observations indicated that under rotational managements the cows did not compensate for restrictions in available herbage by grazing longer. Highest levels of milk production per unit area were observed in both trials when production per cow was depressed by 20–25%.  相似文献

A perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)‐dominated sward on a well‐drained soil (Experiment 1) and a creeping bent (Agrostis stolonifera L.)‐dominated sward on a poorly drained soil (Experiment 2) were subjected to four treading treatments: control (C, no damage), light damage (L), moderate damage (M) or severe damage (S) to quantify the effects on herbage dry‐matter (DM) production and tiller density. In Experiment 1, treading damage was imposed in spring. In Experiment 2, one‐third of the site was damaged in autumn, one‐third in spring and one‐third in both spring and autumn. Both sites were rotationally grazed after treading treatments. Pre‐grazing herbage mass was measured eight times in Experiment 1 and seven times in Experiment 2 on each plot, and tiller density was assessed four times in each experiment. In Experiment 1, pre‐grazing herbage mass was reduced by 30% in S plots at the first harvest after damage, but cumulative pre‐grazing herbage DM production was not different between treatments (12·7 t DM ha?1). In Experiment 2, annual cumulative pre‐grazing herbage mass was reduced by between 14 and 49%, depending on intensity of treading damage event and season when damage occurred. Tiller density was not affected by treatment in either experiment. A perennial ryegrass‐dominated sward on a well‐drained soil was resilient to heavy treading damage. A creeping bent‐dominated sward on poorly drained soil requires a more careful grazing management approach to avoid major losses in cumulative pre‐grazing herbage mass production during wet weather grazing events.  相似文献
