The apparent lack of anthelmintic resistant nematodes in cattle is due to the management systems used with most cattle and the lack of surveys for resistance. With extensive beef grazing or with beef suckler herds a large percentage of worms are in refugia (not exposed to anthelmintic) and few anthelmintic treatments are used. With dairy replacement heifers resistance can become a problem unless only first year animals are treated and different fields are used for grazing the animals each year. Intensive beefproduction on grass is unsustainable and in New Zealand resistance is already becoming a serious problem. Individual farms require monitoring for resistance and steps taken to avoid the introduction of resistance. New validated tests and surveys for resistance are required as the extent of anthelmintic resistant bovine nematodes is not known.  相似文献

Intra-articular corticosteroids are an effective treatment for equine osteoarthritis, however, there is increasing evidence for the effectiveness of other treatments such as biologics. Whilst current evidence does support biologics and their use in patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis, there remains to be a lack of evidence regarding their long-term outcomes and the efficacy of their use as a treatment, especially when compared to corticosteroids. This paper reviewed the evidence comparing intra-articular corticosteroids and biologics in the treatment of equine osteoarthritis and found that whilst they are both effective treatments, more evidence directly comparing them is required.  相似文献

Ectothermic vertebrates are sensitive to thermal fluctuations in the environments where they occur. To buffer these fluctuations, ectotherms use different strategies, including the integument, which is a barrier that minimizes temperature exchange between the inner body and the surrounding air. In lizards, this barrier is constituted by keratinized scales of variable size, shape and texture, and its main function is protection, water loss avoidance and thermoregulation. The size of scales in lizards has been proposed to vary in relation to climatic gradients; however, it has also been observed that in some groups of Iguanian lizards it could be related to phylogeny. Thus, here, we studied the area and number of scales (dorsal and ventral) of 60 species of Liolaemus lizards distributed in a broad latitudinal and altitudinal gradient to determine the nature of the variation of the scales with climate, and found that the number and size of scales are related to climatic variables, such as temperature and geographical variables as altitude. The evolutionary process that best explained how these morphological variables evolved was the Ornstein‐Uhlenbeck model. The number of scales seemed to be related to common ancestry, whereas dorsal and ventral scale areas seemed to vary as a consequence of ecological traits. In fact, the ventral area is less exposed to climate conditions such as ultraviolet radiation or wind and is, thus, under less pressure to change in response to alterations in external conditions. It is possible that scale ornamentation, such as keels and granulosity, may bring some more information in this regard.  相似文献

1. Three experiments were performed to study the effects of amino acid imbalance on the growth of genetically lean (LL) or fat (FL) male chickens from 28 to 42 d of age. In experiment 1, five concentrations of digestible lysine were compared (4.75, 6.75, 7.75, 8.75 and 9.75 g/kg). In experiment 2, four concentrations of digestible arginine were compared (6.53, 7.69, 8.84 and 10.0 g/kg). In experiment 3, three diets were compared: a high‐protein diet (189 g CP/kg), a low‐protein diet containing added essential amino acids (EAA) (144 g CP/kg) and this low‐protein diet supplemented with 40 g/kg of non‐essential amino acids (NEAA) (glutamic acid + aspartic acid).

2. LL birds exhibited a lower growth rate than the FL when the diet was deficient in either lysine or arginine. Plotting weight gain against lysine or arginine intake suggested that most of this effect was caused by variations in food intake.

3. When protein gains (body or total proteins) were plotted against lysine or arginine intake, LL chickens appeared more efficient than FL chickens.

4. Similar growth rates, although slightly lower in FL, were obtained with low‐ and high‐protein diets. However, NEAA supplementation of the low‐protein diet reduced adiposity of LL and did not modify that of FL. Increasing crude protein content (all amino acids) was more effective than NEAA supplementation in decreasing the adiposity of both lines.  相似文献

1. Previous studies have shown that a bunch of string is a particularly attractive pecking stimulus for chicks and adult laying hens. Because movement is thought to be an important attribute of enrichment objects, this study determined whether occasional movement would affect the attractiveness of this device. 2. In experiment 1 the responses of pair-housed chicks to string were compared when devices in adjacent cages were either linked (so that pecking or pulling at the string in one cage moved the adjoining one) or not (separate). In experiment 2 the devices in half the cages were jigged remotely by the experimenter whereas the others remained static. In both cases, the string devices were introduced into the cages for 10 min on each of 5 consecutive days. 3. No treatment effects were apparent in experiment 1 when pooled data was analysed but comparison of responses on days 1 and 5 revealed that only the chicks presented with non-linked devices showed increased interest with repeated exposure. 4. Chicks given static devices in experiment 2 pecked sooner, more often and longer at them than did those exposed to similar ones that were jigged regularly by the experimenter. Jigged devices attracted slightly more pecking with repeated exposure, which may have reflected familiarity-induced fear-reduction, but chick responses showed no apparent changes from day 2 onwards. Conversely, rather than showing habituation, the chicks pecked progressively more at the static devices with repeated presentation. 5. The present results show that chicks pecked readily at bunches of white string, thus confirming its attractive properties but that static devices were more attractive than those incorporating occasional movement. These and previous findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the development of effective environmental enrichment.  相似文献

1. Three experiments performed to study the effects of amino acid imbalances on the growth of genetically lean (LL) and fat (FL) male chickens from 28 to 42 d of age were described by Leclercq et al. (1994). The plasma amino acid concentrations of birds on selected treatments from that paper are reported here. In experiment 1, three dietary concentrations of digestible lysine were compared (4.75, 6.75 and 7.75 g/kg). In experiment 2, two dietary concentrations of digestible arginine were compared (6.53 and 10.00 g/kg). In experiment 3, three diets were compared: a high‐protein diet (189 g CP/kg), a low‐protein diet containing added essential amino acids (144 g CP/kg), and this low‐protein diet supplemented with 40 g/kg of non‐essential amino acids (NEAA; glutamic and aspartic acids).

2. The present results are compared with two earlier reports on the same genotypes. The LL consistently had lower plasma concentrations of me‐thionine, cystine, phenlyalanine, isoleucine and valine, and higher concentrations of histidine, than the FL chickens. In 4 of 5 experiments, LL leucine concentrations were lower, and glutamic acid, tyrosine, glutamine and alanine were higher, than in the FL. The other amino acids measured; arginine, lysine, aspartic acid, glycine and serine, exhibited variable responses among the experiments.

3. When the limiting essential amino acids, lysine and arginine, were added to a deficient diet, the plasma concentration of the supplemented amino acid increased while the others remained constant or decreased.

4. When glutamic and aspartic acids were added to the low protein diet, plasma amino acid responses were similar to those of adding a limiting amino acid to a deficient diet, except that alanine exhibited a dramatic increase.

5. Although there were genotype by diet interactions for several amino acids, the interactions were caused by differences in the degree of the responses, not in their direction.

6. These results suggest that the FL and LL genotypes do not utilise various amino acids with the same efficiency and, as a consequence, the ideal profile of dietary amino acids should not be the same for both lines. The results support the hypothesis that selection for fatness and leanness changed the amino acid requirements independently of the: effects of food intake.  相似文献

  1. A study of broiler breeder eggs differing in eggshell matrix optical density was conducted to determine the association of eggshell structural quality and the risk of disease in broilers.

  2. A total of 10 000 eggs from a broiler breeder flock were examined according to the pre-established criteria, and allocated to groups classified as having a high or low density shell matrix.

  3. The eggs from respective groups were incubated and hatched in a commercial hatchery. Samples of unhatched eggs from each group were subjected to detailed examination to establish the cause of reproductive failure. First, quality chicks from each group were raised as separate flocks in a commercial broiler barn. Group performance, morbidity, and mortality were monitored throughout the growth period. All birds were processed in a commercial plant, and condemnation data were compiled.

  4. There were significantly more unhatched eggs, and fewer quality chicks in the group classified as having a low density eggshell matrix, in comparison to the high-density group.

  5. Embryo pathology accounted for a large proportion of the overall reproductive failure in both groups, with a large proportion of embryos showing anatomical anomalies. The eggs and embryos from the low-density eggshell matrix group were three times more likely to be infected.

  6. Significantly higher production losses associated with mortality/morbidity, and condemnations of carcasses at processing were observed in broilers from the low-density eggshell group compared with the high-density eggshell group.

  7. It is concluded that common metabolic/physiological changes in breeder hens associated with eggshell pathology may be also risk factors linked with predisposition of broiler chicks to some health problems.

There is no doubt that all vector-borne diseases are very sensitive to climatic conditions. Many such diseases have shown marked increases in both distribution and incidence during the past few decades, just as human-induced climate change is thought to have exceeded random fluctuations. This coincidence has led to the general perception that climate change has driven disease emergence, but climate change is the inevitable backdrop for all recent events, without implying causality. Coincidence and causality can be disentangled using tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) as a test case, based on the excellent long-term data for this medically significant European disease system. Detailed analysis of climate records since 1970 has revealed abrupt temperature increases just prior to the dramatic upsurge in TBE incidence in many parts of central and eastern Europe. Furthermore, the seasonal patterns of this temperature change are such as might have favoured the transmission of TBE virus between co-feeding ticks. Nevertheless, the pattern of climate change is too uniform to explain the marked heterogeneity in the timing and degree of TBE upsurge, for example in different counties within each of the Baltic countries. Recent decreases as well as increases in TBE incidence must also be taken into account. Instead of a single cause, a network of interacting factors, acting synergistically but with differential force in space and time, would generate this epidemiological heterogeneity. From analysis of past and present events, it appears that human behavioural factors have played a more significant role than purely biological enzootic factors, although there is an explicit causal linkage from one to the other. This includes a range of abiotic and biotic environmental factors, together with human behaviour determined by socio-economic conditions. Many of the abrupt changes followed from the shift from planned to market economies with the fall of Soviet rule. Comparisons between eight countries have indeed revealed a remarkable correlation between poverty indicators and the relative degree of upsurge in TBE from 1993. Against this background of longer-term shifts in TBE incidence, sudden spikes in incidence appear to be due to exceptional weather conditions affecting people's behaviour, which have a differential impact depending on socio-economic factors. This new perspective may also help explain the epidemiology of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever around the eastern Mediterranean region, including the current exceptional epidemic in Turkey.  相似文献

Background

Screening and enumeration of antimicrobial resistant Escherichia coli directly from samples is needed to identify emerging resistant clones and obtain quantitative data for risk assessment. Aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of 3M™ Petrifilm™ Select E. coli Count Plate (SEC plate) supplemented with antimicrobials to discriminate antimicrobial-resistant and non-resistant E. coli.

Method

A range of E. coli isolates were tested by agar dilution method comparing the Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for eight antimicrobials obtained by Mueller-Hinton II agar, MacConkey agar and SEC plates. Kappa statistics was used to assess the levels of agreement when classifying strains as resistant, intermediate or susceptible.

Results

SEC plate showed that 74% of all strains agreed within ± 1 log2 dilution when comparing MICs with Mueller-Hinton II media. High agreement levels were found for gentamicin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and cefotaxime, resulting in a kappa value of 0.9 and 100% agreement within ± 1 log2 dilution. Significant variances were observed for oxytetracycline and sulphamethoxazole. Further tests showed that the observed discrepancy in classification of susceptibility to oxytetracycline by the two media could be overcome when a plate-dependent breakpoint of 64 mg/L was used for SEC plates. For sulphamethoxazole, SEC plates provided unacceptably high MICs.

Conclusion

SEC plates showed good agreement with Mueller-Hinton II agar in MIC studies and can be used to screen and discriminate resistant E. coli for ampicillin, cephalothin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, cefotaxime and gentamicin using CLSI standardized breakpoints, but not for sulphamethoxazole. SEC plates can also be used to discriminate oxytetracycline-resistant E. coli if a plate-dependent breakpoint value of 64 mg/L is used.  相似文献

Pneumovagina is the abnormal presence of air in the vagina, which may lead to pneumometra and endometritis. Predisposing factors are abnormal perineal conformation and weakness of the vestibulovaginal sphincter. This report examines why ponies and some other breeds are less susceptible to pneumovagina than Thoroughbreds and consequently less susceptible to endometritis. Observations on vaginal ballooning during vaginoscopic examination led to the conclusion that there is a fundamental difference in intra-abdominal pressures between horses and ponies, and between mares with high or low body condition scores. This difference in the extreme cases, for example, a small fat pony versus a large thin Thoroughbred, means that the pressure gradient in the former is from the uterus through the vagina to the exterior, whereas the case is reversed in the latter. Although the uterus is at a negative pressure relative to the exterior, evacuation of fluids is seriously disadvantaged, leading to an inability to resolve uterine infections.  相似文献

Knowles and colleagues have described teaching methods as being either teacher centered, with dependent learning (pedagogy), or learner centered, with independent learning underpinned by the learners' experience and intrinsic motivation (andragogy). This paper argues that both models can be recognized within veterinary undergraduate programs. Veterinary students enter the program with a high level of intrinsic motivation and are prepared to invest considerably in comprehending the material that is presented to them. While this should result in learners whose behavior fits the assumptions underlying andragogy, information overload, poor communication of the relevance of material, teaching by transmission, and examination by memorization often confine learning to the dependent learning characteristic of pedagogical approaches. Students' experience and practical ability should develop as they progress through the program. Drawing upon experience provides opportunities for both fleshing out and putting in context the declarative knowledge from the didactic components of the curriculum. Where this is achieved (either in the clinical or preclinical curriculum), students' motivation and interest is stimulated, resulting in andragogical responses of enhanced motivation and engagement with the subject. Pedagogy and andragogy can, however, be complementary, rather than antithetical. Students enter a new subject with minimal experience and little knowledge about it, so a pedagogical methodology may be the most efficient way of initiating understanding. However, as understanding develops, an andragogical method becomes more appropriate, progressively developing students' independence of learning. The cycle may repeat itself during the program, with the balance changing along with changes in knowledge, goals, experience, and context.  相似文献

The aim of this review is to consider systemic therapy options for meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP). Infections caused by MRSP in small animals--particularly dogs--have been frustrating veterinarians in recent years. After a susceptibility test is performed, veterinarians are left to select from drugs that have not been frequently encountered on a susceptibility report. Some of these are old drugs that have not been used regularly by veterinary dermatologists. As MRSP is, by definition, resistant to all β-lactam antibiotics, including cephalosporins, penicillins and amoxicillin-clavulanate combinations, the β-lactam drugs are not an option for systemic treatment. As most MRSPs are multidrug resistant, familiar drugs, such as trimethoprim-sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, macrolides and lincosamides (clindamycin), are also not usually an option for treatment. Therefore, veterinarians are left with drugs such as rifampicin, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides and vancomycin to choose from on the basis of an in vitro susceptibility test. Some of these drugs were originally approved over 50 years ago and may not be familiar to some veterinarians. Each of these drugs possesses unique properties and has particular advantages and disadvantages. Veterinarians should be particularly aware of the adverse effects, limitations and precautions when using these drugs. New drugs also have been developed for meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in humans. These include linezolid, ceftaroline, daptomycin and tigecycline. Although these drugs are very infrequently--if ever--considered for veterinary use, the properties of these drugs should also be known to veterinary dermatologists.  相似文献
