SUMMARY: The Japan Racing Association (JRA) operates 10 national racecourses with both turf and dirt tracks. JRA formulates the rules for horseracing; registers owners, colors, and horses using foal registration; and licenses all JRA trainers and jockeys. In 1990, at the 10 racecourses there were 288 racing days, 3,353 races, and some 38,397 horses. Horse breeding is concentrated in 7 locations with 93% of the Thoroughbreds foaled each year coming from Hokkaido. Thoroughbred flat racing comprise 92% of all races held. Two year olds race together and nearly 40% of their races are run at 1200 m. Some 39% of the three year olds races are at 1800 m. For 3 (and 4) year olds, the range in distances is from 1000 m to 3600 m. The average, over years, of the number of race records per race for 2 year olds is 10.0 and for 3 year olds and up is 11.3. The average for race records per horse for 2 year olds is 3.5 and for 3 year olds and up is 6.7. This average for horses raced per year for 2 year olds is 1,164 and 4,240 for 3 year olds and up. Horses raced per sire averaged over years was 4.6 for 2 year olds and 10.5 for the older ages. The linear regression of seconds per 100 m fit the average seconds reported for the several distances run almost perfectly with R(2) values greater than .99 for all horse ages on either turf or dirt. There is selection practiced as indicated by horse numbers registered and their numbers over ages for stallions and mares. Less than .2% of the horses raced are geldings. A high degree of control exists by JRA in horse stabling and distribution of racing by horses over racecourses. Jockeys are trained by JRA, ride at several race courses, and ride for many trainers.

Effects of physiological variables (age, body weight and sex) on lipemia (total lipids, phospholipids, triglycerides and NEFA), fecal fat and chymotrypsin excretion were examined in dogs. On comparing various ages and body weights, they found statistically significant differences, while only total lipids showed a statistically significant difference between the two sexes. Moreover, there was a significant correlation between body weight and fecal fat and chymotrypsin excretion. The results obtained contribute to the evaluation of small intestine functionality, especially in relation to some diseases, as malabsorption, maldigestion and steatorrhea in the dog.

1. A trial was conducted to examine the effects of dietary vitamin E content, age and sex on haematological indices and liver enzymes of Japanese quails. A total of 800 1-d-old quail chicks were assigned at random into 4 equal groups and fed on starter and layer diets containing 0, 1, 5 or 10 times the NRC recommended supplements of vitamin E. No selenium was added to the basal deficient diets; the other diets were supplied with 0.2 mg selenium/kg diet. 2. The investigation covered the age span of 3 to 12 weeks in female and male birds. Blood samples were collected at 3-week intervals and tested for haematological indices (erythrocyte count; leucocyte count; susceptibility of erythrocytes to haemolysis; haemoglobin concentration (Hb); packed cell volume (PCV); and mean corpuscular volume (MCV)) and liver enzymes (aspartate transaminase, AST, and glutathione peroxidase, GSH-Px). 3. The significant differences between the 4 dietary treatments indicated that as the levels of selenium and/or vitamin E increased, the percentage of erythrocytes haemolysed and AST activity decreased, whereas Hb and GSH-Px concentrations increased. 4. Differences between age groups showed that older quails had higher erythrocyte susceptibility to haemolysis, higher AST levels and but lower erythrocyte count and PCV. 5. Females had lower erythrocyte haemolysis and higher Hb concentrations than males. 6. The interaction between dietary groups and age groups revealed that the differences between age groups were reduced as the level of selenium and/or vitamin E increased, leading to similar group means over the age period of study. 7. In conclusion, NRC recommended supplements of vitamin E (12 and 25 mg/kg diet) were not adequate. Doses equal to, at least, 5 times that recommended were advised to improve GSH-Px (index of antioxidant status) and Hb concentrations.

Reasons for performing study: There is no consensus on objective outcome measures that can be used to determine if a medical or surgical treatment affects race performance. Objective: To determine the association between 2 commonly used outcome measures (total starts and total earnings) and age, sex, gait and race surface. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was performed using the race performance data for all Thoroughbred horses age 2, 3, 4 and 5 years racing in the United States, and Standardbred horses of the same ages racing in the United States and Canada during the year 2006. Median earnings and starts were determined for each combination of age, sex and track surface (for Thoroughbred) or gait (for Standardbred). The effect these variables had on starts on race earnings ($) was determined using linear regression. Results: Race records for 68,649 Thoroughbreds and 25,830 Standardbreds were obtained. All independent variables (age, breed, sex, gait, track surface and total number of starts) had a significant impact on total earnings (P<0.0001). Conclusions: The data show considerable variation across age groups and track surfaces for Thoroughbreds and across age groups for Standardbreds. They also show that the decision to use earnings or starts as outcome measures could have a marked effect on reported success for a particular treatment. Potential relevance: Both earning and start data should be reported in studies evaluating outcome following surgery or other intervention. Considerations of age, breed, sex, track surface and gait should be included in the design of these studies.

The objective of the present investigation was to provide demographic information regarding the career profile of the average Canadian Standardbred racehorse for application in undergraduate teaching and clinical decision-making. The study population of 762 horses was selected at random from the 1972 registrations of the Canadian Standardbred Horse Society. Sex, birthdate, and province of origin were recorded. Records of racing performance were summarized to provide annual statistics for number of races, money won, race times, and months raced over a ten year period from 1974 to 1983 inclusive. Results were analyzed to determine chances of racing, and the effect of sex, gait, and year of first race upon career duration. Of the 762 horses studied, 507 (66.5%) raced. Mean age at the time of the first race was 3.4 +/- 0.5 years (mean +/- SEM), mean career duration 4.1 +/- 0.1 years. Only 84 horses started racing at two years of age, the majority starting at three and four. Sex had a significant effect upon chances of racing, females having less chance than males or geldings. Females similarly had much shorter careers. As age at the time of the first race increased so did the rate of loss of horses from active competition (attrition rate). The difference between successive years was significant (p less than 0.01). Attrition rates were lower for trotters than for pacers, while geldings showed a significantly lower rate than either males or females (p less than 0.05). Relatively few of those horses for which year of first race was delayed beyond 1974 had been entered in qualifying races in previous years.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The effects of length of test, age when evaluations are made, and correction of data for body weightat the start of test on genetic and phenotypic parameters describing performance test results in beef cattle were studied. The data consisted of body weight, food intake and carcass composition measurements on 542 Hereford bull calves, from 200 to 400 days of age. The traits studied included weights at various ages, weight gain, lean growth rate, food intake, food conversion ratio, lean food conversion ratio, food intake in relation to metabolic body weight, energy required for protein and fat deposition, and predicted maintenance expenditure. Traits were derived for the whole test as well as for part test periods of 200–300 days and 300–400 days.Heritabilities for all traits, except those describing weight at a given age, were lower for the 300–400-day period than for either the 200–300-day period or the whole test. Correlations, however, were higher between whole test and 300–400-day traits than between whole test and 200–300-day traits. Phenotypic correlations between the same trait measured in the two-part test period were very low and much lower than the genetic correlations. Corrections for body weight at the start of test had only a trivial effect on the heritabilities of all traits, the relationships between traits and potential genetic progress in traits measured during the test.

Insulin-like growth factor-1 could be a useful marker in the horse for diagnostic, selection, or forensic purposes, provided its physiological regulation is well understood. The objective of this study was to investigate factors, such as acute exercise, fitness training, time of day, sex, and age, that may influence serum IGF-1 in normal, healthy horses. Throughout a 9-wk training program, 6 geldings maintained a mean (+/- SEM) IGF-1 concentration of 302 +/- 29 ng/mL. Moderate or high intensity exercise had no effect on IGF-1 concentrations, when pre- and postexercise values were compared. Over a 24-h period, there was some variation in IGF-1 concentrations but no clear diurnal rhythm. Concentrations of IGF-1 were measured in a large population of thoroughbred horses (1,880) on 3 continents. The population deviated slightly from a normal distribution (P < 0.001) because of large IGF-1 concentrations in 10 horses. The global mean IGF-1 concentration was 310 +/- 2.2 ng/mL, with a greater mean value (P < 0.001) in gonad-intact males (336 +/- 5.6 ng/mL) than in females (303 +/- 3.2 ng/mL) or geldings (302 +/- 3.2 ng/mL). However, the greatest IGF-1 concentrations observed for all stallions, mares, and geldings were 627, 676, and 709 ng/mL, respectively. In mares and geldings, IGF-1 concentrations showed a gradual decrease with advancing age (P < 0.001), but the effect was much less marked in stallions. This study confirms that IGF-1 concentrations are stable, compared with GH concentrations, in the horse and that a meaningful measure of IGF-1 status can be obtained from a daily serum sample.

Between 1977 and 1984, 31 Thoroughbred horses (mean age, 2.8 years) were surgically treated for slab fractures of the third carpal bone. All fractures involved the articular surfaces of the intercarpal and the carpometacarpal joints in a frontal plane and had a cuboidal or slab shape. In 20 of the horses, the bone was fractured during racing and in 8 of the horses, the bone was fractured during race training. The right limb was affected more frequently than was the left limb (24 vs 7, P less than 0.05). Twenty-one (67.6%) horses raced at least once after recovery from the surgery. Data were available from 11 claiming horses that had raced at least twice before their injuries and 4 times after recovery. A claiming horse is one that competes where any horse entered is subject to being purchased for the designated amount of the claiming race; therefore, each race tends to automatically attract entrants of similar ability. In this group of 11 horses, claiming value decreased from a mean of $13,900 to a mean of $6,500 (P less than 0.05), and the mean finish position was 5.8 +/- 3.16 before injury and 5.8 +/- 3.30 after recovery. The mean claiming value for horses that had not raced before injury, but had raced after recovery (n = 5) was $8,150.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Cervical spinal cord dysfunction is a common problem in equine medicine and the currently available tests give no objective information about the functionality of the nervous tracts. Therefore, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was performed in 84 healthy horses of different height in order to have an objective measure for the integrity of the descending motor tracts in normal horses. OBJECTIVES: To obtain reference values for onset latency and peak-to-peak amplitude of magnetic motor evoked potentials (MMEPs) and to evaluate the possible effect of height, age and gender on the neurophysiological measures. METHODS: All horses were sedated and stimulated transcranially by using a magnetic coil placed on the forehead. The stimulator triggered the sweep of an electromyogram machine that recorded MMEPs bilaterally from needle electrodes in the extensor carpi radialis and cranial tibial muscles. In that way, it was possible to measure latency between stimulus and onset of response. RESULTS: A significant difference was found between recordings made in the fore- and hindlimbs; MMEPs recorded in the front legs had a shorter onset latency and higher peak-to-peak amplitude. Mean +/- s.d. normal values for onset latency of 19.32 +/- 2.50 and 30.54 +/- 5.28 msecs and peak-to-peak amplitude values of 9.54 +/- 3.73 and 6.62 +/- 3.62 mV were obtained for extensor carpi radialis and cranial tibial muscles, respectively. The left-to-right difference in onset latency and peak-to-peak amplitude was not significant. In the same horse, differences up to 0.82 and 1.53 msecs for the extensor carpi radialis and cranial tibial muscles, respectively, lie within the 95% confidence limit and are considered normal. In contrast to onset latency, peak-to-peak amplitude showed a very large intra- and interindividual variability, even in the same muscle. To reduce the variability and predict normal values of new individual cases, influence of height, weight, age and sex on the MMEPs were determined. No significant effects of sex were observed on onset latency and peak-to-peak amplitude. The age of the horse had only a small but significant effect on peak-to-peak amplitude, with larger responses in older horses. Height at the withers and weight of the horse, parameters that strongly correlate with the size of the horse, had an important significant influence on onset latency but not on peak-to-peak amplitude. The age of the horse and height at the withers were used to predict peak-to-peak amplitude and onset latency, respectively, in normal horses. CONCLUSIONS AND POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: TMS is an excellent addition to the few tools we have for noninvasive imaging of the equine nervous system. Magnetically evoked potentials are highly reproducible and recent advances suggest that the applications of TMS in horses will continue to grow rapidly.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Campbell test and discover if there is a link between a puppy's scores and factors such as age, breed, sex, sex-breed interaction, size, Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) groups, and coat color. The Campbell test was performed on 342 puppies (191 males and 151 females) of different breeds. The results show that the criteria used by Campbell to classify puppies are incomplete, and that it is more appropriate to use numerical values for each type of answer. In general, the mean value obtained, regardless of sex and breed, corresponded to the Campbell's submissive stable category. The mean value was higher in male dogs than in females.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of ear type, sex, age, body weight, and ambient climatic conditions on external acoustic meatus (external ear canal) temperatures in dogs. ANIMALS: 650 dogs without clinical signs of ear disease. PROCEDURE: Dogs were assigned to 5 groups on the basis of auricular conformation and amount of hair in the external ear canal and 4 groups on the basis of body weight or age. External ear canal temperatures (EECT) were measured, using an infrared thermometer. Mean EECT determined for each group were compared to evaluate effects of ear type, age, weight, and sex, and EECT measured at different ambient temperatures and humidities were compared to determine climatic effects. RESULTS: Dogs with hirsute ear canals had significantly lower EECT than dogs with hairless ear canals, whereas significant differences were not detected between dogs with erect and pendulous auricles. Dogs < 6 years old had higher EECT than older dogs, and dogs that weighed < 6 kg had lower EECT than larger dogs. External ear canal temperatures measured when ambient temperatures were < 25 C were less than those measured at warmer temperatures. Sex and relative humidity did not affect EECT CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: EECT of dogs without ear disease were affected by weight and age, amount of hair in the external ear canal, and ambient temperature. However, hirsute ears had lower, not higher, EECT than hairless ears, suggesting that EECT may play less of a role in the development of otitis externa than believed.

1. Corticosterone (680 μg/kg body weight per day) given as six daily injections to 3‐ or 7‐week‐old chicks decreased weight gain, but increased food consumption, abdominal fat pad weight, skin dry matter, relative liver size and liver fat concentration. 2. Time of day of injection did not modify the response to corticosterone of 3‐week‐old chicks kept under natural daylight nor of 7‐week‐old broilers receiving additional illumination. 3. Pure White Rock chicks and Cornish x White Rock crossbred chicks responded similarly to corticosterone injections at 3 weeks of age. 4. Seven‐week‐old female birds treated with corticosterone had significantly larger abdominal fat pads than similarly treated males. 5. Corticosterone injection was more effective in increasing the proportion of liver fat in 7‐week‐old birds than in 3‐week‐old ?hicks. 6. The increased amount of abdominal and liver fat due to corticosterone injections administered at 3 weeks of age disappeared after 3 weeks, but growth depression was still evident.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Although the saddle is seen as one of the biggest causes of back pain, and weightbearing is seen as an important aetiological factor in 'kissing spine' syndrome (KSS), the effects of a saddle and weight on the back movements of the horse have never been studied. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of pressure on the back, exerted by tack and weight, on movements of the horse. HYPOTHESIS: Weight has an extending effect on the horse's back and, as a compensatory mechanism to this extension, an alteration in pro- and retraction angles was expected. A similar but smaller effect was expected from a saddle only and a lungeing girth. METHODS: Data were captured during treadmill locomotion at walk, trot and canter under 4 conditions: unloaded; with lungeing girth; saddle only; and saddle with 75 kg of weight. Data were expressed as maximal extension, maximal flexion angles, range of motion of L3 and L5 and maximal pro- and retraction angles of the limbs. RESULTS: At walk and trot, there was a significant influence on back kinematics in the 'saddle with weight' situation, but not in the other conditions. Overall extension of the back increased, but the range of movement remained the same. Limb kinematics changed in the sense that forelimb retraction increased. At canter, both the 'saddle with weight' and 'saddle only' conditions had a significant extending effect on the back, but there was no effect on limb kinematics. CONCLUSIONS AND POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Weight and a saddle induce an overall extension of the back. This may contribute to soft tissue injuries and the KSS. The data from this study may help in understanding the reaction of the equine back to the challenges imposed by man when using the animal for riding.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of age, weight, gender, and of time of day on tear production in normal dogs. ANIMALS: studied One hundred ophthalmoscopically and systemically unremarkable dogs. PROCEDURE: Schirmer tear tests (STT) were performed every 2 h during the day on one randomly chosen eye of each of 100 dogs. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant effect of time of day and age on the STT measurement. The mean STT decreased by 0.4 mm for every 1 year that age increased (P=0.007). Mean STT values taken at 10:00 am were 0.7 mm lower than values taken at 4:00 pm (P=0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Tear production decreases with age in the normal dog. In this population of dogs the largest difference was between the 10:00 am and the 4:00 pm STT measurements, but this still only amounted to 0.7 mm. This value is unlikely to be of clinical significance in the diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS).

Body condition and haematological indices provide powerful information when assessing wildlife health. Reference intervals for these indices can facilitate wildlife management, and would benefit initiatives to save the Critically Endangered geometric tortoise ( Psammobates geometricus). We collected data from 126 geometric tortoises to establish baseline values reflecting variation over four seasons (spring 2000 to winter 2001) and among three groups (female, male and juvenile). We measured body condition index (BCI; mass to shell volume), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), plasma chloride, packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin concentration (Hb) and red blood cell count (RBC), and used PCV, Hb and RBC to calculate erythrocyte indices. BCI correlated poorly with haematological measures but had a strong inverse relationship with BUN. BCI did not vary among groups, but all groups had low condition indices in autumn, the end of the dry season. High BUN and chloride values in autumn indicate dehydration, particularly in males. Males had the highest PCV, Hb and RBC values, especially during summer and autumn when they moved long distances, likely pursuing mates. Female and juvenile indices were similar, except that female Hb was higher than juvenile Hb, possibly to meet female energy needs associated with their large size and reproductive metabolism. Low Hb levels in winter coincided with low temperatures and reduced movements. Our results illustrate how intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence the physiology of geometric tortoises and provide reference intervals to monitor their health.

Data from 321 spring-calving cows (mean calving date March 27) were used to assess the effects of body condition, live weight, cow age (from 4 to 13 yr), and breed (237 Hereford x Friesians and 84 Blue-Greys) and time of calving on the proportion of cows that became pregnant, the number of days from the start of mating to pregnancy, and calving interval. Mating started at turn-out to pasture in mid-May and lasted 9 to 10 wk. Body condition at calving and breed were the most significant animal factors affecting reproductive performance. Cows calving in higher body condition had shorter (P less than .001) calving intervals (11.2 d per unit of body condition at calving). Blue-Grey cows became pregnant in a higher proportion (90%) and calving interval was shorter (364 d) than in Hereford x Friesians (83%; 374 d). Body condition at the start of mating was less important and body condition at the end of mating had no effect. Live weight at calving and changes in live weight from calving to the start of mating and during the mating period had no significant effect. The proportion of cows becoming pregnant decreased significantly with age in Hereford x Friesian cows older than 7 yr. The variance in calving interval accounted for by calving date, body condition at calving, breed, and age was 42%.
