Eight mature idle gelding horses (mean body weight [BW], 558 ± 45 kg) were used in a replicated 2 × 2 Latin square design study. Horses received either two or three meals per day (MPD) for 7 days, of either a high (H; 43%; 215 g/100 kg BW) or low (L; 18%; 90 g/100 kg BW) nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) concentrate feed to achieve four treatment groups: low NSC in two MPD (L2), low NSC in three MPD (L3), high NSC in two MPD (H2), and high NSC in three MPD (H3). On day 7 of the treatments, blood was collected before (baseline) and for 5 hours after feeding the morning meal (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, and 300 minutes after feeding). Baseline insulin concentrations tended (P = .093) to be higher for horses fed high NSC than low NSC, and horses fed two MPD tended (P = .092) to have higher baseline insulin concentrations than horses fed three MPD. In addition, baseline glucose-to-insulin ratio (GIR) was higher in horses fed high NSC compared with low NSC (P < .001). Horses fed high NSC had higher area under the curve of insulin and higher peak insulin after feeding than those fed low NSC. These findings suggest that NSC content of a concentrate feed has an impact on baseline insulin and GIRs and on postprandial insulin concentrations. Meanwhile, the number (and therefore size) of MPD had fewer impacts on glucose metabolism.  相似文献

Although housing horses in single stalls limits their natural behavior to a great extent, this housing system is widespread in Germany, especially for competition horses. To improve the welfare of this system, free exercise on pastures or paddocks is deemed suitable, but it is also feared because of injuries and decreased willingness or motivation to perform. In the present study, three treatments were investigated with regard to their effect on the behavior of six competition horses in the stable, behavior during training, and on their degree of stress: daily training without free exercise (no turnout [NT]), solitary turnout for 2 hours after training, and 2-hour turnout in groups of two after training (group turnout). The horses’ behavior in the stable was continuously analyzed through video recordings (2 pm to 6 am) on 3 days at the end of each treatment. The degree of stress was evaluated daily by heart rate variability at rest. The behavior during training was evaluated by a questionnaire answered by the riders, and the distance covered during training was measured by global positioning system. When NT was allowed, the horses showed less lying in the stable compared with the treatments with turnout. Heart rate variability measurements resulted in great individual differences, but generally, there was a higher degree of stress shown with the treatment NT according to the following parameters: standard deviation of inter-beat-intervals (SDNN), square root of the mean of the sum of the squares of differences between successive inter-beat-intervals (RMSSD), and ratio between low frequency and high frequency (LF/HF). The willingness to perform was evaluated as being slightly better in the treatments with turnout than in the treatment without turnout.  相似文献

The effects of dietary energy source, controlled weight gain, and exercise restriction on insulin sensitivity (SI) were studied in mature Thoroughbred geldings with body condition scores (BCS) of 4.3 ± 0.1. Two dietary energy sources were used, one high in starch and sugar (HS; n = 9) and one high in fat and fiber (HF; n = 7), and horses were fed 20 Mcal digestible energy (DE)/day above maintenance requirements to encourage weight gain. Using the minimal model of glucose and insulin dynamics, no differences in SI between groups were noted before initiation of treatment concentrate feeding. After dietary acclimation, SI was decreased in HS (P < 0.01) as compared with HF. After 32 weeks of controlled weight gain (90.8 kg; final BCS, 7.0 ± 0.1), SI remained lower in HS (P = 0.07) but did not change from the preweight gain value. SI in HF did not change between the start and end of weight gain. After completion of weight gain, exercise was restricted for 2 weeks, resulting in a reduction in SI in HF (P = 0.03) but no change in HS. It was concluded that dietary energy source may be more influential than weight gain on SI in the mature Thoroughbred gelding between BCS 4 and 7. The higher SI found in horses consuming the HF diet appeared to be partially dependent on some level of physical activity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine effects of feeding diets with various soluble-carbohydrate (CHO) content on rates of muscle glycogen synthesis after exercise in horses. ANIMALS: 7 fit horses. PROCEDURES: In a 3-way crossover study, horses received each of 3 isocaloric diets (a high soluble CHO [HC] diet, a low soluble CHO [LC] diet, or a mixed soluble CHO [MC] diet). For each diet, horses were subjected to glycogen-depleting exercise, followed by feeding of the HC, LC, or MC diet at 8-hour intervals for 72 hours. RESULTS: Feeding the HC diet resulted in a significantly higher glycemic response for 72 hours and significantly greater muscle glycogen concentration at 48 and 72 hours after exercise, compared with results after feeding the MC and LC diets. Muscle glycogen concentrations similar to baseline concentrations were detected in samples obtained 72 hours after exercise in horses when fed the HC diet. Rate of glycogen synthesis was significantly higher when horses were fed the HC diet, compared with values when horses were fed the MC and LC diets. Glycogen synthase activity was inversely related to glycogen content. Protein content of glucose transporter-4 was the lowest at 72 hours after exercise when horses were fed the HC diet. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Muscle glycogen synthesis was slower after glycogen-depleting exercise in horses, compared with synthesis in humans. Feeding HC meals after strenuous exercise hastened replenishment of muscle glycogen content, compared with results for feeding of LC and MC diets, by increasing availability of blood glucose to skeletal muscles.  相似文献

The effect of dietary starch and fat content on serum creatine kinase (CK) activity and substrate availability was evaluated in 4 mares of Quarter Horse-related breeds with polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM). Four isocaloric diets ranging in digestible energy (DE) from 21.2% (diet A), 14.8% (B), 8.4% (C), to 3.9% (D) for starch, and 7.2% DE (diet A), 9.9% (B), to 12.7% DE (diet C and D) for fat were fed for 6-week periods (4 weeks with exercise) using a 4 X 4 Latin square design. Postprandial glucose and insulin responses were measured, and 4 hours postexercise, serum CK activity, glucose, insulin, free fatty acids (FFA), and beta-hydroxybutyrate (beta-HBA) were analyzed. Glycogen, glucose-6-phosphate, citrate synthase, 3-hydroxy-acyl-CoA dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase as well as abnormal polysaccharide and lipid content were measured in middle gluteal muscle samples. Postprandial insulin and glucose response was higher for diet A versus D. Log CK activity was higher with diets A, B, and C versus D. Daily insulin was higher and FFA lower on diet A versus B, C, and D, whereas glucose varied only slightly with diet. Muscle oxidative capacity and lipid stores were low in PSSM horses and muscle glycogen and abnormal polysaccharide content high on both diets A and D. Individual variation occurred in the response of PSSM horses to diets differing in starch and fat content. However, for those horses with clinical manifestations of PSSM, a diet with <5% DE starch and >12% DE fat can reduce exertional rhabdomyolysis, potentially by increasing availability of FFA for muscle metabolism.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of feeding blends of grains naturally contaminated with Fusarium mycotoxins to mature, exercised horses, and to test the efficacy of a polymeric glucomannan mycotoxin adsorbent (GM polymer) in preventing Fusarium mycotoxicoses. Six mature, mixed-breed mares with an average BW of 530 kg were assigned to one of three dietary treatments for 21 d in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square design. Feed consumed each day was a combination of up to 3.5 kg of concentrates and 5.0 kg of mixed timothy/alfalfa hay (as-fed basis). The concentrates fed included 1) manage; 2) blend of contaminated grains; and 3) contaminated grains + 0.2% GM polymer (MTB-100, Alltech Inc., Nicholasville, KY). Concentrates containing contaminated grains averaged 11.0 ppm deoxynivalenol, 0.7 ppm 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol, and 0.8 ppm zearalenone (as-fed basis). Feed intake and BW were monitored over a 21-d period. Horses were maintained on a fixed exercise schedule throughout the experiment. At the end of the experiment, each horse completed a time-to-fatigue treadmill step test. Variables measured during pretest, each step of the test, and 5 and 10 min posttest were as follows: 1) time-to-fatigue, 2) heart rate, 3) hematological variables, and 4) serum lactate concentration. Each step consisted of 2 min of fast trot with a 2% increase in incline after each 2 min. Feed intake by horses fed contaminated grains was decreased compared with controls throughout the experiment (P < 0.05). Supplementation of 0.2% GM polymer to the contaminated diet did not alter feed intake by horses compared with those fed the unsupplemented contaminated diet. All hay was consumed regardless of concentrate fed. Weight loss from 0 to 21 d was observed in horses fed contaminated grains compared with controls (P < 0.05). No effect of diet was seen on variables used to measure athletic ability, although the results showed an expected response to exercise for a fit horse. We conclude that exercised horses are susceptible to Fusarium mycotoxicoses as indicated by appetite suppression and weight loss.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine age-related differences in glycemic and insulinemic responses of horses that were fed various feedstuffs, with particular attention to method of feed processing. A 16 × 16 Latin square design was used with eight 2-year-olds and eight mature Arabians. Horses were maintained on a roughage diet and were subjected to a glycemic response test once weekly. A control treatment consisted of an oral dextrose drench (0.25 g dextrose/kg of BW). Ten treatments consisted of variously processed feed ingredients fed at the rate of 1.5 g/kg of BW. Five other treatments were commercial feeds of a proprietary nature and are not reported. Fasting blood samples were taken once a week for 16 weeks. Thirty minutes later, another baseline sample was taken and horses were administered their respective treatment. Further blood samples were taken every 30 minutes through four hours. Samples were analyzed for glucose and insulin concentrations. Differences in glucose response between 2-year-olds and mature horses were minimal. However, mature horses had a higher insulin response (P < .01) suggesting young horses had greater insulin sensitivity. Additionally, differences (P < .05) existed between treatments with pelleted steam-processed corn having the highest glycemic response and cracked corn the lowest. Results from this study confirm that mature horses have reduced insulin sensitivity and that both glycemic and insulinemic responses are altered with feed processing techniques. Thermal processing produces the greatest response; however, a low glycemic response may not be desirable if starch escapes into the hindgut.  相似文献

The hypothesis tested was that the intake of extra fat at the expense of an isoenergetic amount of nonstructural carbohydrates reduces fibre utilisation in horses. In a crossover trial with feeding periods of 42 days each, 6 mature trotting horses (age 4-12 years, bodyweight 340-476 kg) were given either a control or test diet. The test concentrate was formulated to contain 37% of net energy in the form of soybean oil. The control concentrate contained an isoenergetic amount of corn starch plus glucose. The concentrates were fed in combination with the same amount of hay so that the control and test diet contained 25.13 and 86.66 g crude fat/kg dry matter, respectively. Apart from the amounts of fat and nonstructural carbohydrates, the 2 diets were identical. The test diet reduced the apparent total tract digestibilities of crude fibre, neutral and acid detergent fibre by 8.0 (P = 0.007), 6.2 (P = 0.022) and 8.3 (P = 0.0005) percentage units, respectively. It is suggested that a high fat intake by horses may increase the amount of fat entering the large intestine to levels that depress fermentation by cellulolytic bacteria. The observed interaction between fat content of the diet and fibre utilisation may have consequences for practical horse feeding in that calculating the energy content of test diets on the basis of feedstuff tables leads to overestimating the amount of energy provided by the high-fibre ingredients of the diets.  相似文献

In Germany, most competition horses are housed in single stalls and free exercise is not permitted in many cases. The reason for not allowing free exercise is mostly the risk of injury. Additionally, opinions exist that the horses’ demand for exercise is fulfilled by training and that the horses’ willingness to perform is negatively influenced by free exercise. In the present study, three turnout practices were investigated with regard to their effect on the behavior of four horses: daily training without free exercise (no turnout), 2-hour turnout (for free exercise) before training, and 2-hour turnout after training. The aim of this study was to determine any differences in the horses’ behavior between the three treatments. The horses’ behavior in the stable was observed through video recordings. The behavior during turnout was observed directly and during training was evaluated by the riders with the aid of a questionnaire. Additionally, the distance covered during turnout was measured by Global Positioning System devices. The behavior within the stall was more restless in the treatment without turnout—which became apparent in significantly more frequent changes between behaviors as compared with the treatments with turnout. The results of Global Positioning System measurement during turnout showed a significantly shorter distance covered when horses were trained before they were turned out compared with turnout before training. If the horses were turned out after training, they also showed less trotting and cantering and more dozing. The horses’ willingness to perform was not significantly different between the three treatments.  相似文献

Six mature Quarter Horse-type geldings were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square experiment to determine the effects of adding 5 or 10% feed-grade rendered animal fat to the concentrate diet fed to performance horses. The experiment was conducted over a 14-day pre-trial period to acquaint horses to the experimental apparatus, a 28-day conditioning period and 3 diet treatment periods of 21 days, each conducted in a Latin square arrangement. The horses were exercised on a dirt track and diet effects were evaluated during and following a submaximal exercise test (SET) on an equine treadmill. Physiological responses to the SET were determined following each experimental period. Relative to the control, the horses required 21% and 25% less of the concentrate feed (P<.05), containing 5% and 10% added fat, respectively. There was an increase (P<.05) in muscle glycogen concentration as fat was added to the diet. There were no differences due to feeding fat in nutrient digestibility or in oxygen consumption, ventilatory capacity, respiratory quotient, heart rate blood lactate or blood pH during the SET. However, there was an overall decrease (P<.05) in blood glucose and total lipid concentration, when 10% fat was added to the concentrate diet  相似文献

The following research encompassed two experiments and involved feeding horses two isocaloric diets (diet A and diet B), with an approximate 50% difference in nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) content. There were three main objectives: first, to test the hypothesis that feeding an approximately 50% lower NSC concentrate feed would cause a lower glucose and insulin response; second, to test the hypothesis that feeding meals equal in NSC content would create similar responses in glucose and insulin dynamics; and finally, to test the hypothesis that the time spent eating is correlated with glucose/insulin response. In experiment 1, in which diet A and diet B were fed at the same rate, the main finding was that feeding a meal lower in NSC resulted in a lower glucose and insulin response to the feed. In experiment 2, in which the effects of feeding diets A and B at a rate to provide 0.3 g/kg body weight (BW) NSC per meal were explored, the main finding was that, although glucose responses were similar, the meal containing more NSC/kg and fed at the lower rate resulted in a substantially lower insulin response. Consumption time also was found to be significantly different between treatments.In conclusion, a low NSC formulation and small meal size appear to be sensible recommendations for horses that may benefit from a low glucose and insulin response to feeding. In addition to NSC content, meal size, and nutrient:calorie ratio, nutrient requirements of the individual horse and the entire nutritional balance of the diet also should be addressed.  相似文献

Nutritional management of animals during pregnancy can affect glucose and insulin dynamics in the resulting offspring through influences on fetal development. Additionally, high starch feeding in mature horses is associated with reduced insulin sensitivity and an increased risk for diseases such as obesity and laminitis. However, no study has yet evaluated the effect of feeding a high starch diet to pregnant mares on glucose and insulin dynamics in their offspring. Twenty late-gestation mares maintained on pasture were provided two-thirds of digestible energy requirements from isocaloric, isonitrogenous low starch (LS, n = 10) or high starch (HS, n = 10) feed. Their foals were assessed with an insulin-modified frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test at 5, 40, 80, and 160 d of age. Baseline glucose concentrations, insulin sensitivity, and insulin-independent glucose clearance in 5-d foals were all greater than values observed in mature horses and declined towards mature values as foals reached 160 d of age. Baseline glucose concentrations were all within normal range, but higher in foals born from HS mares through 80 d of age. Insulin sensitivity was not different between dietary groups until a trend for lower insulin sensitivity in HS foals emerged at 160 d of age. These data are the first to characterize decreasing insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance in Thoroughbred foals from 5 to 160 d of age. This study also presents the first data examining glucose and insulin dynamics in developing foals in response to maternal high starch diet.  相似文献

Six Quarter Horse yearling fillies were used in a duplicated 3 × 3 Latin square experiment to evaluate the technique of using nitrogen retention as a response criterion for amino acid studies in the horse. Yearlings were paired by age and randomly assigned to one of three concentrates fed with medium-quality Coastal Bermudagrass hay. Diet A, a soybean meal–based concentrate, was amino acid sufficient. Diet B, a cottonseed hull–based concentrate containing 2% urea, was amino acid deficient. Horses fed diet C, identical to diet B, were orally dosed with synthetic essential amino acids and cysteine, immediately before eating, to match amino acid levels in diet A. Nitrogen retention was not different between diets A and B. There was a trend for horses fed diet C to have higher nitrogen retention, as a result of higher nitrogen intake. Nitrogen retained as a percent absorbed was lower (P < .05) for diet B than for diet A, whereas values for diet C were not different from diets A or B. Nitrogen retention was not an effective response criterion in this study. Differences in nitrogen retained as a percentage absorbed were observed between amino acid–sufficient and deficient diets. However, horses fed amino acid–deficient diets and dosed with synthetic amino acids likely require some modified dosage level to achieve the same or higher values as those for amino acid–sufficient diets.  相似文献

Feeding diets high in soluble carbohydrates to growing horses has been implicated in the development of orthopedic diseases; as a result, substitution of dietary fat for soluble carbohydrates has received attention. Because IGF-I is integral to growth and cartilage development and because it is influenced by nutrition, we evaluated the effect of dietary fat substitution on metabolic endpoints and circulating GH and IGF-I in growing horses. Twelve Quarter Horse weanlings, four female and eight male, 151 to 226 d old, were blocked by sex and age and assigned to two treatment groups. Group one (CARB; n = six) was fed a concentrate containing 2.21% fat and 33.9% starch; group two (FAT; n = six) was fed a concentrate containing 10.3% fat and 24.0% starch. Both concentrates contained 3.0 Mcal/kg of DE and 16% CP. Brome hay also was fed. Diets were fed at 0800 and 1600 for 60 d. On d 0, 30, and 60, blood samples were obtained via a jugular catheter from 1 h before until 5 h after the morning feeding. Serum was analyzed for glucose, insulin, GH, IGF-I, NEFA, and total cholesterol (CHOL). Neither ADG (0.85 +/- 0.04 and 0.84 +/- 0.04 kg) nor concentrate DMI (4.04 +/- 0.12 and 4.03 +/- 0.12 kg/d) differed between treatments. There were consistent increases in glucose and insulin in response to feeding on d 0, 30, and 60 for both groups. On d 30, the glucose response to feeding was less (P = 0.07) over time in FAT vs. CARB; however, there were no significant treatment x time effects on d 0 or 60. On d 60, the insulin response to feeding was less (P < 0.05) over time in FAT compared with CARB; however, there was no treatment x time effect on d 0 or 30. Serum CHOL concentrations did not differ between groups on d 0. Horses in the FAT group had increased CHOL concentrations on d 30 and 60 compared with CARB (P < 0.01). Although treatment x time interactions were noted for GH on d 30 and 60 (P < 0.05), only transient and inconsistent differences in the secretory profiles between CARB and FAT treatments were evident at those sampling times. Serum NEFA and IGF-I did not differ between treatments on d 0, 30, or 60. These results suggest that dietary energy source, at least at the level used in this study, did not affect foal growth performance or serum IGF-I and NEFA concentrations. Fat substitution increased serum CHOL and variably affected serum GH, glucose, and insulin concentrations in response to feeding.  相似文献

AIM: To identify feeding and management variables associated with variation in faecal pH within a population of intensively managed Thoroughbred racehorses in New Zealand. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted of 16 racehorse trainers in the North Island of New Zealand. Interviews were conducted at the trainers' stables to obtain information on feeding and management of horses, and faecal samples were collected and faecal pH measured. RESULTS: Ninety-seven percent of the horses surveyed were confined in an area or=12 h/day. Trainer's age, number of years they had trained horses, age and gender of horses, weeks in race training, racing class, frequency of feeding, bedding type, and exercise workload had no effect on mean faecal pH. Acidic faecal pH (pH 12 horses. Acidic faecal pH was associated with trainers who offered 4 kg of grain as the only form of concentrate fed, or offered 12 horses. Irrespective of management system, it appears important to provide at least 2.25 kg of hay/day ad libitum, to buffer hindgut acidosis associated with diets high in soluble carbohydrate.  相似文献

High glycaemic feeds are associated with the development of insulin resistance in horses. However, studies that evaluated the effect of high glycaemic feeds used horses that either ranged in body condition from lean to obese or were fed to increase body condition over a period of months; thus, the ability of high glycaemic feeds to induce insulin resistance in lean horses has not been determined. This study evaluated the insulin sensitivity of 18 lean horses fed a 10% (LO; n = 6), 20% (MED; n = 6) or 60% (HI; n = 6) non‐structural carbohydrate complementary feed for 90 days. Although both the MED and HI diets increased insulinaemic responses to concentrate feeding in relation to the LO diet (p > 0.05), neither induced insulin resistance, as assessed by glucose tolerance test, following the 90‐day feeding trial. Interestingly, the post‐feeding suppression of plasma non‐esterified fatty acids was less pronounced in HI‐fed horses (p = 0.054) on days 30 and 90 of the study, potentially indicating that insulin‐induced suppression of adipose tissue lipolysis was reduced. As insulin‐resistant animals often have elevated plasma lipid concentrations, it is possible that altered lipid metabolism is an early event in the development of insulin resistance. The effects of high glycaemic feeds that are fed for a longer duration of time, on glucose and lipid metabolism, should be investigated further.  相似文献

Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is important because of its association with laminitis. Obesity and insulin resistance are two important components of EMS, and the underlying cause of this syndrome is likely to be enhanced metabolic efficiency. Affected horses are often referred to as “easy keepers” because they require fewer calories to maintain body condition, and enhanced metabolic efficiency is an inherent risk factor for EMS that may be genetically determined. Pony breeds, Morgan horses, and Paso Finos are predisposed to EMS, but this problem can be prevented through effective management. Overfeeding, abundant pasture grass, and inadequate exercise are risk factors that relate to modern management practices. Obesity and adiposity induce insulin resistance, and recent research suggests that this is the determinant of laminitis susceptibility in ponies. Increased plasma insulin concentrations are detected in most affected horses and ponies, so this serves as a useful screening test for EMS. Physical characteristics also should be examined because horses with EMS exhibit regional adiposity in the form of a cresty neck or abnormal adipose tissue deposits close to the tailhead. All horses with enhanced metabolic efficiency, obesity, or regional adiposity should be screened for EMS. The combined intravenous glucose−insulin test can be performed to diagnose insulin resistance in mildly affected horses and quantify insulin sensitivity. Most horses with EMS can be effectively managed by reducing caloric intake, decreasing the starch and sugar content of the diet, increasing exercise, and limiting or eliminating access to pasture, but medical therapy is warranted in select cases.  相似文献

Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse yearlings (n = 24; 335+/-7 d of age) were used in a 112-d feeding trial to determine whether chromium (Cr) supplementation would alter growth, development, and energy metabolism of growing horses on high-concentrate diets. The horses were assigned at random within breed and gender subgroups to one of four treatment groups: A) basal concentrate; B) basal plus 175 microg of Cr/kg concentrate; C) basal plus 350 microg of Cr/kg concentrate; and D) basal plus 700 microg of Cr/kg concentrate. Chromium was provided via Cr tripicolinate (Prince Agri Products, Quincy, IL). The horses were weighed, measured for withers and hip height, heart girth, and body length and underwent ultrasound evaluation for croup fat thickness. The concentrate was fed for ad libitum consumption for two, 1.5-hr feeding periods daily. Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) hay was group-fed (six animals/group) at 1% of BW daily. Feed intake was 60% concentrate and 40% hay, resulting in a supplemental Cr intake of 0, 105, 210, and 420 microg/kg diet for groups A, B, C, and D, respectively. Colts consumed more concentrate and total feed than did fillies (P < .05), but no dietary effect on feed intake was detected. Colts weighed more than fillies at the completion of the experiment (P = .0754), but no dietary effects on weight, body measurements, or croup fat were detected. An i.v. glucose tolerance test (.2 g of glucose/kg BW) and an i.v. insulin sensitivity test (.1 IU of insulin/kg BW) were conducted on each animal during the third 28-d period of the experiment. Plasma glucose peaked immediately following injection and decreased more rapidly in animals consuming the high-Cr diet than in those consuming the control diet (P < .01). Mean glucose fractional turnover rate values increased (P = .0369) and mean half-life of glucose decreased (P = .0634) in response to the high Cr supplementation. Plasma glucose depletions in animals fed the other two diets were between and not different from (P > .10) the depletions in control animals or in those fed high-Cr diets. No difference in insulin sensitivity was detected (P > .10). Results indicate that Cr tripicolinate supplementation of yearling horses increases the rate at which glucose is metabolized and may lower the plasma glucose concentration. No effect of Cr supplementation on development of the animals was detected.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the addition of a purified soluble (pectin) and insoluble (lignocellulose) fibre to a starchy meal on post‐prandial glucose and insulin responses in healthy horses. Four horses were fed in a randomized order three different diets: (i) cracked corn, (ii) cracked corn mixed with purified lignocellulose, and (iii) cracked corn mixed with purified pectin. Each diet was adjusted to a starch intake of 2 g/kg bodyweight (BW). Lignocellulose was aligned to an intake of 0.2 g/kg BW, and pectin was fed in a dosage of 0.1 g/kg BW. Each period consisted of a 10‐day acclimatization to the diet (fed once per day); during this time, the horses were fed 1.2 kg hay/100 kg BW/day. Blood was collected after each acclimatization period before and after the test meal was fed, without any hay. The increase in plasma glucose and insulin, peak values, and area under the curves were similar for all diets. The present findings suggest that adding purified soluble or insoluble fibre to a corn meal does not affect post‐prandial glucose and insulin responses in healthy horses. Feeding strategies for horses with a high energy requirement should include a starch reduction per meal, rather than the addition of purified fibre.  相似文献
