Calicivirus isolation and persistence in a pygmy chimpanzee (Pan paniscus)

What may be the first calicivirus isolate from any primate species, including man, was recovered from a herpesvirus-like lip lesion on a pygmy chimpanzee and then, 6 months later, from the throat of the same animal. The infected individual and its cage mates had circulating antibodies that were type-specific for this calicivirus. The agent was antigenically different from 30 other calicivirus serotypes and is tentatively designated primate calicivirus Pan paniscus type 1 (PCV-Pan 1).     

Chromosome number of a small protist: accurate determination

Electron micrographs of serial sections through a meiotic prophase nucleus of the mycetozoan Labyrinthula sp. show that there are nine separate and distinct synaptinemal complexes. Since each complex represents a set of paired homologous chromosomes, it follows that the haploid chromosome number of this protist is nine.

Chromosome number variation in a stick insect Didymuria violescens (Leach)

Seven major races, with diploid numbers ranging from 26 to 40, and three types of sex-chromosome mechanism were found in the Australian phasmatid Didymuria violescens (Leach). The differences between chromosome complements are mainly due to translocations between autosomes, and to translocations between autosomes and sex chromosomes. The geographic pattern of chromosome variation and the characteristics of hybrids implicate chromosomal rearrangements in mechanisms of speciation.     

Paedomorphosis and neoteny in the pygmy chimpanzee

The strongly paedomorphic skull form in the pygmy chimpanzee results from the heterochronic process of neoteny. This cranial paedomorphosis and neoteny in Pan paniscus may be related to reduced sexual dimorphism in morphology and behavior. The interspecific differences in form result from shifts in the rate and timing of similar patterns of development.     

Conservation of liquid and solid quantity by the chimpanzee

Sarah, an adult "language"-trained chimpanzee, made accurate same-different judgments on quantities of liquid and solid matter and conserved both types of quantity despite a transformation in an irrelevant property (shape). Control tests showed that she judged on the basis of inference rather than perceptual evaluation of the quantities. She failed to make accurate same-different judgments on the basis of number, and she was not tested for conservation of this type of quantity.

Chromosome Number of Rose Clover, Trifolium hirtum

The somatic chromosome number of the cultivated Trifolium hirtum All. (rose clover) is 10. Satellites occur on one pair of the chromosomes. Out of approximately 70 species of this genus for which the chromosome numbers are known, only one other has a chromosome number of 10.     

Excavation of a chimpanzee stone tool site in the African rainforest

Chimpanzees from the Tai forest of C?te d'Ivoire produce unintentional flaked stone assemblages at nut-cracking sites, leaving behind a record of tool use and plant consumption that is recoverable with archaeological methods. About 40 kilograms of nutshell and 4 kilograms of stone were excavated at the Panda 100 site. The data unearthed show that chimpanzees transported stones from outcrops and soils to focal points, where they used them as hammers to process foodstuff. The repeated use of activity areas led to refuse accumulation and site formation. The implications of these data for the interpretation of the earliest hominin archaeological record are explored.     

Early signs of language in child and chimpanzee

In a sequel to Project Washoe, chimpanzees are being taught American Sign Language from birth by humans who are fluent in the language, including persons who are themselves deaf or whose parents were deaf. The first two subjects began to use signs when they were 3 months old, and these early results indicate that the new conditions are significantly superior to the conditions of Project Washoe. More valid comparisons can now be made between the acquisition of language by children and by chimpanzees.

Biopsy material taken from the brain of a patient with CreutzfeldtJakob disease with status spongiosus induced a similar fatal encephalopathy in a chimpanzee 13 months after inoculation.

Relationship between Nuclear Volumes, Chromosome Numbers, and Relative Radiosensitivities

An inverse relationship between a volume estimated to be associated with interphase chromosomes and acute lethal exposure to x-or gamma radiation has been found in 16 plant species. The apparent differences in radiosensitivities found would seem spurious, since the estimated average energy absorbed in the nucleus per chromosome (3.6 x 10(6) ev) approaches a constant (variation less than fourfold) in spite of wide ranges of lethal exposures (0.6 to 75 kr), of nuclear volumes (43 to 1758 micro(3)), and of somatic chromosome numbers (6 to 136). The regression line obtained can be used to predict the radiosensitivities of other plant species if their nuclear volumes and chromosome numbers are known.
