Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis which can affect many species. Control programs need accurate diagnosis to be successful, and currently, diagnosis relies on serology. It presents three main issues: the sampling, the antigen panel, and the cutoff point. Herein, we propose a systematic review on leptospirosis among dogs, pigs, and horses in Latin America in order to improve the understanding of the seroepidemiology of leptospirosis in these species in the region as well as the temporal development of the research on this topic and, consequently, improve the chances of success on control programs. Internet databases were consulted over 2015. Inclusion criteria included serosurvey using MAT; a relevant number of animals; the presence in the antigen panel of at least one representative of serogroups Icterohaemorrhagiae and Canicola for dogs, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Australis, and Pomona for pigs, and Icterohaemorrhagiae and Australis for horses; and a cutoff point of ≥100. Overall, 240 papers were studied, of which 87 referred to dogs, 66 to pigs, 39 to horses, and 48 to more than one of the studied species. In relation to those that met all the inclusion criteria, it was 45 (66.2%) in dogs, 23 (41.8%) in pigs, and 23 (63.9%) in horses. Leptospirosis is widespread in Latin America. Predominant serogroups are Canicola to dogs and Icterohaemorrhagiae to pigs and horses. Therefore, research on animal leptospirosis should be encouraged in Latin America, in order to reach a greater standardization in studies and then achieve better results on control programs. 相似文献

Reports on the clinico-pathology and mechanisms of trypanosomosis in free-living and captive wild animals showed that clinical
disease and outbreaks occur more commonly among captive than free-living wild animals. This is because the free-living wild
animals co-exist with the disease until subjected to captivity. In exceptional cases however, draught, starvation and intercurrent
diseases often compromised trypanotolerance leading to overt trypanosomosis in free-living wild animals. Meanwhile, in captivity,
space restriction, reduced social interactions, change in social herd structure, reduced specie-to-specie specific behaviors,
altered habitat and translocation were the major stressors that precipitated the disease. The cumulative effect of these factors
produced severe physiological and somatic stress leading to diminished immune response due to increased blood cortisol output
from adrenal cortex. The major symptoms manifested were pyrexia, innapetence, increased respiration, anaemia, cachexia and
death. At necropsy, pulmonary oedema, splenomegally, hepatomegally, lympadenopathy and atrophy of body fats were the gross
changes encountered. At the ultra-structural level, the tissues manifested degenerative changes, haemorghages, necrosis and
mononuclear cellular infiltrations. The mechanisms of cellular and tissue injuries were primarily associated with physical
and metabolic activities of the organisms. From the foregoing, it is evident that stress is the underlying mechanism that
compromises trypanotolerance in wild animals leading to severe clinico-pathological effects. 相似文献

Leptospirosis is a ubiquitous zoonotic disease that may be maintained in either wild or domesticated animal species. These bacteria have been classified into serovars based on their antigenic characteristics and, more recently, into species based on genomic studies. They produce both chronic and acute infections. Chronic infections of serovars in the host species to which they have become adapted can result in long term shedding, providing a source of acute infection for other species. As clinical presentation can vary greatly, diagnosis often depends on laboratory methods. In addition to diagnostic testing, herd health monitoring and screening for international trade purposes are performed at veterinary laboratories. The test method selected varies depending on the samples available and the purpose of testing. An increasing variety of laboratory methods are being described for detection of bacteria and antibodies. In addition to classical methods such as culture, dark-field, microscopy and the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), a variety of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), competitive ELISA and other rapid serological tests have been described. This review describes the advantages and limitations of these assays together with other factors that may affect results and their interpretation, such as species variation, vaccination and antibiotic administration. 相似文献

From 2002 to 2005, we collected 118 serum samples from 34 species belonging to 13 families of zoo animals in Korea and determined the prevalence of antibodies for 18 serovars of Leptospira spp. using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Twenty-nine (25%) of the serum samples tested were positive for one or more of the serovars. There were no significant differences in relation to genders: 23% and 26% of positives occurring in male and female animals, respectively (P>0.05). However, the seroprevalence for the Leptospira spp. was significantly higher (P<0.05) in herbivores (45%) than in either carnivores (17%) or omnivores (17%). Among the 5 serovars detected in this study, the most common was sejroe (n=27; 87% of all positive reactions). All positive reactions showed low titers (< or = 1:200) and the positives were most frequently detected in 1:25 (58%) and 1:50 (23%) serum dilutions. The highest antibody titer (1:200) was observed for the serovars sejroe (n=1) and bratislava (n=1). We conclude that the exposure of zoo animals to Leptospira spp. is relatively common in Korea and produces low MAT titers, with sejroe being the most commonly encountered serovar. 相似文献

During a period of 30 months, from January 1977 to June 1979, Leptospira agglutinins were detected in 355 (6%) of 5841 bovine sera, 52 (10.1%) of 511 porcine sera, one (5%) of 20 equine sera and one (12.5%) of eight canine sera. Bovine, porcine and equine sera reacted predominantly with L. pomona. Reactors to L. hardjo/sejroe, L. icterohaemorrhagiae and L. grippotyphosa were also detected in cattle. One porcine serum reacted with L. grippotyphosa and one canine serum with L. icterohaemorrhagiae. Al the sera originated from suspected cases of leptospirosis. 相似文献

Pestiviruses are not strictly host-species specific and can infect not only domestic but also wild animals. The most important pestivirus, CSFV, infects domestic pigs and wild boars, which may cause a major problem for successful CSFV eradication programmes. Mainly BVDV specific antibodies have been reported in captive and free-living animals. Virus has been isolated from some of these animal species, but since BVDV can contaminate cell cultures and foetal calf serum, early reports of BVDV isolation have to be considered with caution. Genetic typing of early pestivirus isolates from wild species revealed that the majority were BVDV-1. Of the pestiviruses identified so far three species (CSFV, BVDV-1, giraffe pestivirus) and three genotypes (BDV-2, BDV-4, pronghorn) appear to circulate in wildlife animal populations. The potential for pestiviruses to spread between farm animals and free-living animals is discussed as are epidemiological and technical problems, and the future direction of research. 相似文献
