Abstract

Methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from an irrigated rice field under continuous flooding and intermittent irrigation water management practices in northern China were measured in situ by the static chamber technique during May to October in 2000. The intermittent irrigation reduced total growing‐season CH4 emission by 24.22% but increased N2O emission by 23.72%, when compared with the continuous flooding. Soil Eh and four related bacterial groups were also measured to clarify their effects on gaseous emissions. Three ranges of soil redox potential were related to gas emissions: below ?100 mV with vigorous CH4 emission, above +100 mV with significant N2O emission, and +100 to ?100 mV with little CH4 and N2O emissions. Intermittently draining the field increased soil oxidation, with a decrease in CH4 emission and an increase in N2O emission. In general the mid‐season drainage slightly increased the populations of methanotrophs, nitrifiers, and denitrifiers but decreased that of methanogens.  相似文献

Besides increased growth, plants cultivated under elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) show reduced transpiration and improved water use efficiency due to decreased stomatal conductances. While growth profits from the longer availability of soil water under CO2 enrichment, increased canopy temperature may counteract these positive effects. Here we report on time series of soil temperatures and moistures from six years in which spring crops were cultivated in free-air CO2 enrichment (Mini-FACE) experiments. Besides air and soil climate, temperature and relative humidity were determined in wheat canopies. Measurements rested on five replicates per treatment, representing a control (CON), an ambient air (AMB) and a FACE treatment. While the CON and AMB plots did not receive additional CO2, concentrations were moderately elevated by 150 μl l?1 in the FACE plots. Plant growth differed among years due to the different climate and duration of individual experiments. Total biomass production was increased in the FACE treatments but significant effects were found only in one out of six years. In most of the years, soil temperatures tended to be reduced and soil moistures remained higher under elevated CO2. Because the observed differences recurred during the growing season, we conclude that CO2 enrichment was responsible for changes of the soil microclimate. At the same time vapour pressure deficit in the canopy significantly differed between the treatments for some days. While canopy heating due to CO2 enrichment occurred in the early growing season these effects disappeared later suggesting that the stronger increase in leaf area index in the FACE treatments mitigated heating effects over time. The results support the supposed effects of CO2 enrichment on the canopy climate and indicate a ‘microclimatic paradox’ with higher soil water availability due to the reduced transpiration and stronger canopy heating in FACE plots at least early in the season.  相似文献

Ecosystem exposure to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration can often leads to increased ecosystem carbon (C) fluxes, as well as greater net primary production. Changes in the soil C pool with elevated [CO2] are more difficult to measure and therefore remain poorly understood. In this study, we carried out a series of laboratory soil incubations, in order to determine whether 8 years of ecosystem exposure to elevated [CO2] altered decomposition dynamics of two age classes of soil C in a temperate coniferous forest. Our objectives were to determine whether there were differences in the decomposition kinetics of soil C up to 8 years old (Cpost-tr) and soil C older than 8 years (Cpre-tr), in the absence of concurrent plant activity. We collected soil from the Duke Forest Free Air CO2 Enrichment site in North Carolina and incubated whole and crushed (all macroaggregates dispersed) soil from two depth increments (0–5 cm and 5–15 cm) for 102–127 days. We found that mineral soil from the treatment plots had higher respiration rates in the absence of concurrent plant activity than mineral soil from plots under ambient CO2 conditions. These differences in respiration rate were only significant in 0–5 cm soil and could be largely explained by higher initial respiration rates of soil collected from the CO2-treated plots. Disruption of soil macroaggregates did not result in a difference in efflux rate in soil from this forest under ambient or elevated CO2 conditions at either depth. The specific respiration rate of Cpost-tr was higher than that of Cpre-tr in the top 5 cm of soil, while the opposite was true for 5–15 cm of soil. Even though Cpost-tr was assimilated by the ecosystem more recently than Cpre-tr, their decay constants were similar at both depths. These results suggest that, in the absence of plant activity, the mineralization of soil C of different ages in this forest may be under similar biological and/or biochemical control. Therefore, if the higher initial rates of decomposition of Cpost-tr seen in these experiments are sustained in the field, greater labile pool size of recently added C, and potentially faster cycling of this pool, may in part explain higher soil respiration rates and limited soil C accumulation under elevated [CO2] in this forest.  相似文献

Temperate forests dominated by Quercus spp. cover large parts of Central Mexico and rural communities depend on these forests for wood and charcoal. The impacts of charcoal production on selected chemical properties including C and N dynamics, and populations of ammonifiers, nitrifiers and denitrifiers were investigated on surface soils (0–15 cm) collected during the dry and rainy season of these forests. Organic C was halved in soil at the kiln sites compared to undisturbed forest soil. Concentrations of exchangeable Ca2+, K+ and Mg2+ increased >1.6 times at kiln sites and pH increased from 4.5 in undisturbed soil to 7.0 at kiln sites. The kiln sites had 1.3 times and 2.4 times lower microbial biomass C and N, respectively, than undisturbed forest sites during the rainy season. Although the effect of charcoal production on NH4+, NO2? and NO3? concentrations was small, the ammonifying, nitrifying and denitrifiers were 16 times lower at the kiln sites than in the undisturbed forest soil. This research found that the charcoal production had a negative effect on the cultivable microorganisms involved in N cycling and the soil microbial biomass C and N compared to undisturbed forest soil. Differences in inorganic N dynamics were more affected by seasonality, i.e. precipitation, than by charcoal production.  相似文献

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations are expected to have marked impacts on the carbon (C) turnover in agro-ecosystems through increased plant photosynthetic rates, leading to an enhanced biomass, and wider plant C/N ratios. Through increased carbon allocation below-ground, as well as through changed litter quality, CO2 enrichment will indirectly affect soil faunal communities. In the present study we investigated how elevated atmospheric CO2 and two different levels of N fertilization may affect abundance and diversity of collembolans, as important catalysts in decomposition processes, within an agro-ecosystem under winter wheat cultivation. The investigations were carried out in 2002 within a field experiment using the “Free Air CO2 Enrichment” technique (FACE) at the Federal Agricultural Research Centre (Braunschweig, Germany). Stable C-isotopic analysis of collembolans, soil, and crops gave insight into C translocation. During our investigations δ13C values of all components analysed were significantly more negative under FACE compared to ambient air conditions. Stable C-isotopic signatures of collembolans were similar to those of soil under ambient air, but in between those of soil and roots under elevated CO2 conditions. Our results revealed significant effects of both treatments (CO2 enrichment and N fertilization) on density and species diversity of collembolans. Overall, collembolans were stimulated under elevated CO2 conditions, showing an increased abundance of more than 50% (11 240 ind m−2) as well as a higher biodiversity (Shannon Weaver index = 2.5; evenness = 0.75) compared to ambient air conditions (7520 ind m−2; Shannon Weaver index = 2.2; evenness = 0.72). With regard to N supply, a decrease of about 20–30% under CO2 enrichment and 45–55% under ambient air conditions in collembolan abundance with no alteration in diversity was recorded under reduced N fertilization. The observed impacts were species-specific.  相似文献

This study assessed the effects that season and tillage practices have on the diversity of nitrous oxide producing bacteria (nitrifiers and denitrifiers) and to relate this to measured N2O fluxes at our field site. Large-scale field plots (1.5 ha) were established in Elora, Ontario in 2000, and managed using conventional tillage (CT) or no-tillage (NT). Each field plot was instrumented with micrometeorological equipment to determine N2O fluxes on a field scale. Soil samples were taken at four time points between the fall of 2005 and the spring of 2006. The diversity of the nitrifier and denitrifier communities was assessed by PCR–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) using primer pairs targeting the amoA, nirS and nirK gene. Seasonal variation (a combination of soil temperature, available soil moisture, nutrient levels and other potential factors) had the largest influence on the diversity of nitrifier and denitrifier populations; while tillage practice also influenced the diversity of the microbial community at certain time periods. Tillage significantly affected all communities in March and affected denitrifiers on all other dates except for the nirS community in February. Further statistical analysis revealed that diversity of the nitrifying and denitrifying populations was the lowest in February, in frozen soils, and rapidly increased in March, corresponding with spring thaw N2O emissions. Long-term soil nutrient, temperature and N2O data taken at this site added additional information on the dynamics of the nitrogen cycle.  相似文献

We describe experiments to better understand how CH4 oxidation rates by different methanotroph communities respond to changing CH4 concentrations. We used a novel system of automatically monitored chambers to investigate the response of CH4 oxidation rates in a New Zealand pasture and adjacent pine forest soil exposed to varying atmospheric CH4 concentrations.Type II methanotrophs that dominate CH4 oxidation in the forest soil became progressively saturated as CH4 concentrations rose from ambient (1.8 ppmv) to 570 ppmv, as shown by a decrease in uptake efficiency from 20% to 2% removal. By contrast, CH4 oxidation in the pasture soil where Type I methanotrophs dominate increased in proportion to the increase in CH4 inlet concentration, oxidising about 2% of the inlet CH4 flux throughout. Modelling based on Michaelis-Menten kinetics revealed that low-affinity (Type I) methanotrophs were solely responsible for CH4 oxidation in pasture soils, whereas high affinity (Type II) methanotrophs only contributed about 10% of the CH4 oxidation in the forest soil. Increased aeration status using a soil–perlite (1:1) mixture doubled CH4 oxidation rates at both ambient (1.8 ppmv) and 40 ppmv atmospheric CH4. A similar volcanic soil previously exposed for 8 y to high CH4 fluxes from a landfill had removal efficiencies consistently above 95% for atmospheric CH4 concentrations up to 7500 ppmv when the CH4 oxidation rate was7000 μg CH4 kg−1soil h−1.  相似文献

The soil microbial communities of a landfill cover substrate, which was treated with landfill gas (100 l CH4 m?2 d?1) and landfill leachate for 1.5 years, were investigated by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA), ergosterol and respiratory quinone analyses. The natural 13C depletion of methane was used to assess the activity of methanotrophs and carbon turnover in the soil system. Under methane addition, the soil microbial community was dominated by PLFAs (14:0 and 16:1 isomers) and quinones (ubiquinone-8 and 18-methylene-ubiquinone-8) related to type I methanotrophs, and 18:1 PLFAs contained in type II methanotrophs. While type I methanotrophic PLFAs were 13C depleted, i.e. type I methanotrophs were actively oxidising and assimilating methane, 13C depletion of 18:1 PLFAs was low and inconsistent with their abundance. This, possibly reflects isotopic discrimination, assimilation of carbon derived from type I methanotrophs and a high contribution of non-methanotrophic bacteria to the 18:1 isomers. Landfill leachate irrigation caused the methanotrophic community to shift closer to the soil surface. It also decreased 18:1 PLFAs, while type I methanotrophs were probably stimulated. Gram positive bacteria, but not fungi, were also 13C depleted and consequently involved in the secondary turnover of carbon originating from methanotrophic bacteria. Cy17:0 PLFA was 13C depleted in deep soil layers, indicating anaerobic methane oxidation.  相似文献

The frequency of drought is anticipated to increase in wetland ecosystems as global warming intensifies. However, information on microbial communities involved in greenhouse gas emissions and their responses to drought remains sparse. We compared the gene abundance of eubacterial 16S rRNA, nitrite reductase (nirS) and methyl coenzyme M reductase (mcrA), and the diversity and composition of eubacteria, methanogens and denitrifiers among bog, fen and riparian wetlands. The gene abundance, diversity and composition significantly differed among wetlands (p < 0.01) with the exception of the diversity of methanogens. The gene abundance was ranked in the order of the bog = fen > riparian wetland, whereas the diversity was in the riparian wetland  fen > bog. In addition, we conducted a short-term drought experiment and compared microbial communities between control (water-logged) and drought (?15 cm) treatments. Drought led to significant decline in the gene abundance in the bog (16S rRNA, nirS, mcrA) (p < 0.01) and fen (16S rRNA, nirS) (p < 0.05), but not in the riparian wetland. There were no differences in the diversity and composition of denitrifiers and methanogens at all sites following drought. Our results imply that denitrifiers and methanogens inhabiting bogs and fens would suffer from short-term droughts, but remain unchanged in riparian wetlands.  相似文献

Microorganisms are the regulators of decomposition processes occurring in soil, they also constitute a labile fraction of potentially available N. Microbial mineralization and nutrient cycling could be affected through altered plant inputs at elevated CO2. An understanding of microbial biomass and microbial activity in response to belowground processes induced by elevated CO2 is thus crucial in order to predict the long-term response of ecosystems to climatic changes. Microbial biomass, microbial respiration, inorganic N, extractable P and six enzymatic activities related to C, N, P and S cycling (β-glucosidase, cellulase, chitinase, protease, acid phosphatase and arylsulphatase) were investigated in soils of a poplar plantation exposed to elevated CO2. Clones of Populus alba, Populus nigra and Populus x euramericana were grown in six 314 m2 plots treated either with atmospheric (control) or enriched (550 μmol mol−1 CO2) CO2 concentration with FACE technology (free-air CO2 enrichment). Chemical and biochemical parameters were monitored throughout a year in soil samples collected at five sampling dates starting from Autumn 2000 to Autumn 2001.The aim of the present work was: (1) to determine if CO2 enrichment induces modifications to soil microbial pool size and metabolism, (2) to test how the seasonal fluctuations of soil biochemical properties and CO2 level interact, (3) to evaluate if microbial nutrient acquisition activity is changed under elevated CO2.CO2 enrichment significantly affected soil nutrient content and three enzyme activities: acid phosphatase, chitinase and arylsulphatase, indicators of nutrient acquisition activity. Microbial biomass increased by a 16% under elevated CO2. All soil biochemical properties were significantly affected by the temporal variability and the interaction between time and CO2 level significantly influenced β-glucosidase activity and microbial respiration. Data on arylsulphatase and chitinase activity suggest a possible shift of microbial population in favour of fungi induced by the FACE treatment.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide emissions from soils beneath canopies of two Mediterranean plants, Artemisia absinthium L. and Festuca pratensis Huds. cv. Demeter, were monitored over a 7-day period that included an artificial precipitation event of 4 cm. The experiments were conducted using 0.2 m3 soil microcosms inside greenhouses with CO2 concentrations of either 360 or 500 μmol mol−1. Carbon dioxide flux from the soil surface, as calculated using a diffusive transport model agreed well with CO2 flux measurements made using a dynamic flow system. Soil CO2 emissions did not differ significantly between the 360 and 500 μmol mol−1 CO2 treatments when soils were dry (volumetric soil moisture content ≤9%). A simulated precipitation event caused an immediate exhalation of CO2 from soil, after which CO2 emissions declined slightly and remained constant for approximately 36 h. CO2 emissions from soil microcosms with F. pratensis plants growing in 500 μmol mol−1 CO2 then rose to levels that were significantly greater than CO2 emissions from soils in the microcosms exposed to 360 μmol mol−1 CO2. For A. absinthium growing in 500 μmol mol−1 CO2, the rise in soil CO2 emissions following the wetting event was not significantly greater than emissions from soils with A. absinthium growing under 360 μmol mol−1 CO2. A. absinthium above ground biomass increased by 46.1 ± 17.9% (mean ± S.E., n = 4, P ≤ 0.05). Above ground biomass did not significantly increase for F. pratensis (14.4 ± 6.5%, P ≥ 0.10). Root biomass, on the other hand, increased for both species; by 50.6 ± 17.9% (P ≤ 0.05) for A. absinthium and by 55.9 ± 12.7% (P ≤ 0.05) for F. pratensis. Our results demonstrate two events following precipitation onto dry soils, an immediate release of CO2 followed by a gradual increase from enhanced biological activity The gradual increase was greater for the herbaceous ruderal perennial F. pratensis under elevated CO2.  相似文献

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important component of the global carbon cycle. Its dynamics depends upon various natural and anthropogenic factors including soil erosion. A study on Miamian silty clay loam soil in central Ohio was conducted to investigate the effect of soil erosion on SOC transport and mineralization. Runoff plots 10, 20 and 30 m long on a 7% slope under natural rainfall were used. Total soil loss, evolution of CO2 from the displaced aggregates of various fractions, and total SOC concentrations were determined. It was shown that the primary ways of SOC loss resulted from two processes: 1) mechanical preferential removal of SOC by overland flow and 2) erosion-induced mineralization. Significant amounts of SOC mobilized by erosion at the upper part of the slope during the season (358 kg ha? 1) could be lost to the atmosphere within 100 days (15%) and transported off site (44%). Breakup of initial soil aggregates by erosive forces was responsible for increased CO2 emission. During the initial 20 days of incubation the amount of CO2 released from coarse size sediment fractions (0.282 g C kg? 1 soil d? 1) was 9 times greater than that in fine fractions (0.032 g C kg? 1 soil d? 1) due to the greater initial amount of SOC and its exposure to the environment. Sediment size distribution as well as its residence time on the site was the primary controllers of CO2 loss from eroded soil.  相似文献

Assimilating atmospheric carbon (C) into terrestrial ecosystems is recognized as a primary measure to mitigate global warming. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO) is the dominant enzyme by which terrestrial autotrophic bacteria and plants fix CO2. To investigate the possibility of using RubisCO activity as an indicator of microbial CO2 fixation potential, a valid and efficient method for extracting soil proteins is needed. We examined three methods commonly used for total soil protein extraction. A simple sonication method for extracting soil protein was more efficient than bead beating or freeze–thaw methods. Total soil protein, RubisCO activity, and microbial fixation of CO2 in different agricultural soils were quantified in an incubation experiment using 14C-CO2 as a tracer. The soil samples showed significant differences in protein content and RubisCO activity, defined as nmol CO2 fixed g−1 soil min−1. RubisCO activities ranged from 10.68 to 68.07 nmol CO2 kg−1 soil min−1, which were closely related to the abundance of cbbL genes (r = 0.900, P = 0.0140) and the rates of microbial CO2 assimilation (r = 0.949, P = 0.0038). This suggests that RubisCO activity can be used as an indicator of soil microbial assimilation of atmospheric CO2.

We used natural gradients in soil and vegetation δ13C signatures in a savannah ecosystem in Texas to partition soil respiration into the autotrophic (Ra) and heterotrophic (Rh) components. We measured soil respiration along short transects from under clusters of C3 trees into the C4 dominated grassland. The site chosen for the study was experiencing a prolonged drought, so an irrigation treatment was applied at two positions of each transect. Soil surface CO2 efflux was measured along transects and CO2 collected for analysis of the δ13C signature in order to: (i) determine how soil respiration rates varied along transects and were affected by localised change in soil moisture and (ii) partition the soil surface CO2 efflux into Ra and Rh, which required measurement of the δ13C signature of root- and soil-derived CO2 for use in a mass balance model. The soil at the site was unusually dry, with mean volumetric soil water content of 8.2%. Soil respiration rates were fastest in the centre of the tree cluster (1.5 ± 0.18 μmol m?2 s?1; mean ± SE) and slowest at the cluster–grassland transition (0.6 ± 0.12 μmol m?2 s?1). Irrigation produced a 7–11 fold increase in the soil respiration rate. There were no significant differences (p > 0.5) between the δ13C signature of root biomass and respired CO2, but differences (p < 0.01) were observed between the respired CO2 and soil when sampled at the edge of the clusters and in the grassland. Therefore, end member values were measured by root and soil incubations, with times kept constant at 30 min for roots and 2 h for soils. The δ13C signature of the soil surface CO2 efflux and the two end member values were used to calculate that, in the irrigated soils, Rh comprised 51 ± 13.5% of the soil surface CO2 efflux at the mid canopy position and 57 ± 7.4% at the drip line. In non-irrigated soil it was not possible to partition soil respiration, because the δ13C signature of the soil surface CO2 efflux was enriched compared to both the end member values. This was probably due to a combination of the very dry porous soils at our study site (which may have been particularly susceptible to ingress of atmospheric CO2) and the very slow respiration rates of the non-irrigated soils.  相似文献

Various methods have been suggested to separate root and microbial contributions to soil respiration. However, to date there is no ideal approach available to partition below-ground CO2 fluxes in its components although the combination of traditional methods with approaches based on isotopes seems especially promising for the future improvement of estimates. Here we provide evidence for the applicability of a new approach based on the hypothesis that root-derived (rhizomicrobial) respiration, including root respiration and CO2 derived from microbial activity in the immediate vicinity of the root, is proportional to non-structural carbon contents (sugars and organic acids) of plant tissues. We examined relationships between root-derived CO2 and non-structural carbon of rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings using 14C pulse labelling techniques, which partitioned the 14C fixed by photosynthesis into root-derived 14CO2, and 14C in sugars and organic acids of roots and shoots. After the 14C pulse 14C in both sugars and organic acids of plant tissues decreased steeply during the first 12 h, and then decreased at a lower rate during the remaining 60 h. Soil 14CO2 efflux and soil CO2 efflux strongly depended on 14C pools in non-structural carbon of the plant tissues. Based on the linear regression between root-derived respiration and total non-structural carbon (sugars and organic acids) of roots, non-rhizomicrobial respiration (SOM-derived) was estimated to be 0.25 mg C g−1 root d.w. h−1. Assuming the value was constant, root-derived respiration contributed 85–92% to bulk soil respiration.  相似文献

A plan was developed to apply biosolid to soil of the former lake Texcoco to fertilize the pioneer vegetation. Because, no information exists about how differences in electrolytic conductivity (EC) might affect mineralization of biosolid and dynamics of C and N in soil, 20 soil samples forming a gradient in EC ranging from 22 to 150 dS m−1 were characterized, amended with 500 mg biosolid C kg−1 dry soil and incubated aerobically at 22 ± 2 °C while production of CO2, concentrations of ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2), and nitrate (NO3), and NH3 volatilization were monitored at 22 ± 2 °C for 70 days. Soil characteristics showed large variations with maximum values often >10-times larger than minimum values. The production of CO2 in the unamended soil ranged from 25 to 159 mg CO2-C kg−1 day−1 and NH3 volatilization from 0 to 189 μg NH3-N kg−1 day−1. Application of biosolid increased production of CO2 significantly 1.4-fold and volatilization of NH3 11.5-fold. The EC explained most of the variation in production of CO2, while particle size distribution explained most of the variation in volatilization of NH3. The concentration of NH4+ in the biosolid-amended soil decreased sharply in the first 14 days, with the EC explaining most of the variation found, and remained constant thereafter with a small increase at day 70. Significant increases in the concentration of NO3 were generally found in soil with EC < 64 dS m−1. The EC explained most of the variation in production of CO2, and dynamics of NH4+ and NO3 while clay positively and sand content negatively affected NH3 volatilization. It was found that increases in EC inhibited C and N mineralization in soil of the former lake Texcoco.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide measurements from soil surface may indicate the potential for soil respiration and carbon consumption according to microbial biomass and root activity. These processes may be influenced by land use and cover change, and abandonment especially in the upper soil organic layer. Seven environments from cultivation to late abandonment, with the same soil type classified as Lithic Xerorthent, were tested to ascertain the respiration capacity according to the current use and cover, and to establish the ability to preserve and eventually increase the organic matter pools after abandonment. Given the importance of carbon dioxide measurements at soil surface, a comparison between the classic soda lime method (SL) and a rapid method based on infrared sensor analyzer (IR) was performed from autumn 2008 to autumn 2009 in the field. The field measurements of CO2 proved significant correlations between the values from the two techniques under the same natural conditions and along the period of observation. However, the values of CO2 measured by the soda lime method were always higher than those obtained by the infrared analyzer. This pattern was attributed to the difference in time of measurement, larger in the former method, and type of measurement technique. Despite that the trend of measured CO2 values was rather similar along the year. On average, the highest values of CO2 emission in the field were recorded in the warmest periods of the year and with soil surface moisture not lower than 3% independently on the method used. High soil surface temperature with soil moisture below 3% decreased drastically the CO2 production from the dry soil. The cultivated environments and soil under forests have resulted higher CO2 producers than abandoned soils depending on the age of abandonment, climatic conditions, and within abandonment perturbations. Those abandoned soils preserved by perturbations like wildfire showed a higher potential for accumulating organic carbon, as indicated by the lowest emission of CO2 with respect to SOC content, during the period of observation. Results demonstrated the reliability of the methods used to evaluate the soil carbon dioxide production capacity and allowed to classify through environments with increasing potential for carbon sequestration. The classification was rather similar by using both methods indicating a higher susceptibility to carbon loss in the following order: soil under Vines (V) > under Olives (O) > under Pine trees (PI) > under Cork Trees (S) > under Pasture (PR) > under Cistus scrub (MC) > under Erica scrub (MB) by using the SL method and V > O > PI > S > MC > MB > PR by using the IR method. Indications about the need of management of abandoned areas were also considered in order to recover the landscape heterogeneity.  相似文献

The increasing frequency of periodic droughts followed by heavy rainfalls is expected for this current century, but little is known about the effects of wetting intensity on the in situ biogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes of forest soils and soil microbial biomass. To gain new insights into the underlying mechanisms responsible for wetting-induced GHG fluxes in situ, rain simulation field experiments during a natural prolonged drought period were done under a temperate forest in northeast China. The intensity of rainfall-induced CO2 pulses increased from 0.84 to 2.08 g CO2–C m? 2 d? 1 with the intensity of wetting up to ca. 80% water-filled pore space, which coincided with an increase in soil microbial biomass and with a decrease in soil labile organic C following wetting. Methane uptake rates decreased from 1.76 to 0.87 mg CH4–C m? 2 d? 1 with the intensity of wetting. Wetting dry forest floor increased N2O fluxes from 6.2 to 25.9 μg N2O–N m? 2 d? 1, but there was no significant difference between all experimental wetted plots. The rainfall-induced N2O pulses with increasing wetting intensity were opposite to that of the CO2 pulses, showing a maximum response at the lowest wetting intensity. An analysis of the temperature sensitivity of GHG fluxes indicated that temperature had an increased effect on the in situ CO2 flux and CH4 uptake, respectively, under wetted and dry conditions. The global warming potential of GHG fluxes and Q10 value of the temperature response of CO2 fluxes increased linearly with wetting intensity. The results indicate that the rainfall-induced soil CO2 pulse is mainly due to enhanced microbial consumption on substrates and highlight the complex nature of belowground C-cycling responses to climate change in northeast China forests that normally experience periodic droughts followed by heavy rainfalls over the year.  相似文献

Very little is known about the effect of overgrazing on carbon loss from soil in semi-arid savannas and woodlands of South America. Soil carbon parameters were measured in a 10,000 ha restoration project in the western Chaco of Argentina (24°43′S and 63°17′W). Three situations were compared: highly restored (HRS), moderately restored (MRS) and highly degraded (HDS). Soil and litter samples were recovered in the dry and wet seasons. SOC and CO2–C values decreased from the HRS (7.0 kg m−2 and 130 g m−2) to the HDS (1.5 kg m−2 and 46 g m−2) whereas the C mineralization rate increased toward the less restored sites (0.96–2.29). Surface-litter C was similar in both sites under restoration (260 and 229 g m−2), being non-existent at the HDS. Leaves from woody species dominated surface-litter in the HRS, whereas grass material was predominant in the MRS. During the wet season, the SOC decreased, whereas both CO2–C and C mineralization rate increased. The magnitude of the between-season differences was highest at the HDS (62% in SOC, 55% in CO2, and 80% in C mineralization rate). We estimated that C loss since introduction of cattle into the forest was 58 Mg ha−1, reaching a total of 2×1015 g at for the entire Chaco. These values are higher than those caused by the conversion of savannas and other ecosystems into agriculture or cultivated pastures. The amount of C fixed in the highly restored site (275 g ha−1 per year) indicates that the Chaco soils have a significant potential as atmospheric carbon sinks.  相似文献
