The magnitude of perinatal mortality in 50 species of captive wild ungulates born at the Zoological Society of London's collections at Regent's Park and Whipsnade between 1975 and 1985 is reviewed. Thirty-five per cent of 2471 ungulates born during this 11 year period died before six months old and most deaths occurred in the first week after birth. Similar findings have been reported at other zoos and in the wild. The seasonal distribution of births is described in 43 species. Significantly higher perinatal mortality was found in species which breed throughout the year (notably axis deer and sitatunga) than in seasonal breeders, and differences associated with system of management were apparent in some species (eg, mouflon and scimitar-horned oryx) kept at Regent's Park and Whipsnade. Considerable advances have been made in the management of captive wild ungulates in recent years but it is likely that perinatal mortality rates could be further reduced by improved management and veterinary care of the dams and neonates.  相似文献

West Nile virus lineage 2 (WNV‐2) was detected in the brain of 17 goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) that succumbed to neuroinvasive disease in the Czech Republic during 2018: twelve birds were captive and five wild. Furthermore, two wild sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus) and three other captive birds of prey (golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos, hybrid saker falcon Falco cherrug × F. rusticolus and Harris's hawk Parabuteo unicinctus) also died due to WNV encephalitis. The 2018 outbreak in Czech raptors clearly reflects a new epidemiological situation and indicates an increasing risk of both raptor and human infection with WNV‐2 in the country.  相似文献

Here we describe an outbreak of European brown hare syndrome (EBHS) in a captive hare population. The EBHS outbreak occurred in March 2009, at the beginning of the breeding season. Overall mortality was 53% out of an original population of 61 animals. Animals between five and eleven months showed a significantly higher mortality rate than other age classes. Pregnant females either aborted their foetuses and survived or died pregnant. All foetuses (n=10) of the pregnant hares were PCR positive for EBHSV. Only one offspring born during the outbreak survived. Shortly after the outbreak, the surviving hares developed a specific anti-EBHSV titre between 1:80 and 1:2560, which dropped to 1:10-1:160 nine months later. Hares between one and three years of age developed a significantly higher titre than hares younger than one year or older than four years. Offspring born after the outbreak showed a lower titre of 1:10, indicating passive antibody transfer via placenta and milk. After two months, the titre was not detectable any longer. In December 2009, the captive population was vaccinated against EBHS virus with inactivated virus prepared from the organs of infected hares. The titres after the first vaccination ranged from 1:10 to 1:640, and after the second vaccination from 1:10 to 1:320. To estimate the effect of EBHS on reproduction, we compared the breeding seasons 2008 and 2009. Several possible sources of infection of the colony are discussed, but the definite cause could not be determined.  相似文献

Parasite control in wild ruminants is based mainly on anthelmintics. The objective of the present study was to evaluate three parasite control programs in seven herds of captive wild ruminants in 3 consecutive years. In the first year, a biannual spring-summer treatment regime with fenbendazole at 7.5 mg/kg body weight p.o. for 3 days was applied. The next year, an early-season treatment program with three administrations of fenbendazole at the same dosage at 3-wk intervals was used. In the third year, an early-season treatment program with ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg p.o. for 3 days), applied three times at 5-wk intervals, was evaluated. Effectiveness of these control programs was assessed by fecal egg counts and by scores of body condition and fecal consistency at weekly intervals. Involved animal species were Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx), scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), slender-horned gazelle (Gazella leptoceros), Soay sheep (Ovis aries soay), ibex (Capra ibex), red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus), and Nelson's elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni). With the spring-summer regime, fecal egg counts remained low during the first 5 mo, but from September onward, they slowly increased to significant levels in all seven herds. The early-season program with fenbendazole resulted in fecal egg counts near zero during the entire year in four herds but a significant egg shedding from August onward was noted in Arabian oryx, scimitar-horned oryx, and Soay sheep. The early-season program with ivermectin resulted in very low to zero egg shedding in gazelle, adult Soay sheep, ibex, red deer, and Nelson's elk during the entire grazing season, but failed to prevent high shedding in October in Arabian oryx and scimitar-horned oryx. High contamination of grassy pastures with infective larvae/eggs in the previous year or before the first treatment may explain failure of the treatment regimes in some herds.  相似文献

Grazing by large mammals alters vegetation physiognomy, consequently changing habitat suitability for small mammal communities. We investigated the response of terrestrial small mammals to grazing by wild and domesticated ungulates at the boundary of a protected area (Telperion Nature Reserve) and surrounding cattle ranches in Mpumalanga, South Africa over two seasons. Fifteen paired grids were set on either side of the boundary fence at which small mammals were trapped in Sherman live traps placed flat on the ground. A total of 11 760 trap nights resulted in the capture of 187 animals belonging to 14 species (11 rodents, two shrews and one elephant shrew). The small mammal communities in grasslands grazed by domesticated or wild ungulates were similar in abundance, species richness, diversity and demographic parameters, likely due to the fact that vegetation structure of the two grazing systems was also similar. We used generalised linear models to show that rock and grass cover were plausible predictors of small mammal abundance in this system. Rock cover showed a positive relationship with small mammal abundance whilst grass cover showed a negative relationship. Our observations suggest that at the scale of our study and with the current stocking densities, wild and domesticated ungulates have similar impacts on the small mammal community.  相似文献

Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia is a severe infectious disease of goats in Africa and the Middle East. It is caused by a fastidious mycoplasma, Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae, a member of the "M. mycoides cluster". Members of this cluster share genomic and antigenic features, which result in common biochemical and serological properties, complicating species identification. Two species of this cluster, M. mycoides subsp. capri and M. mycoides subsp. mycoides large colony biotype, are very often isolated from clinical cases resembling contagious caprine pleuropneumonia. Furthermore, in the laboratory, M. capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae can be easily confused with the closely related capricolum subspecies. Considering these constraints and the scarcity of available methods for identification, a specific polymerase chain reaction was developed. A DNA fragment of 7109 bp containing genes coding for the arginine deiminase pathway (ADI) was chosen as target sequence for the selection of a specific primer pair. The full ADI operon from M. capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae strain GL100 was sequenced. Polymorphism within this locus was analyzed by comparison with the sequence from the closely related IPX strain (M. capricolum subsp. capricolum). It varied from 0.6% to 3.5%. The highest divergence was found in a region coding for arcD. Therefore, this gene was chosen as target for the specific amplification of a 316 bp-long DNA fragment. The specificity of this PCR was validated on 14 M. capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae strains and 27 heterologous strains belonging to the "M. mycoides cluster" and M. putrefaciens. This new PCR will be a valuable tool for the surveillance of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia.  相似文献

The fecal Escherichia coli isolated from wild Japanese serows living in mountainous areas away from humans and those from captive serows kept in human areas were examined for antimicrobial resistance and the possession of transferable R plasmids. Of 874 E. coli strains isolated from 283 wild serows in 1980-1981, only 11 (1.3%) were resistant to at least one of 6 antimicrobial drugs; ampicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, kanamycin and sulfadimethoxin. Seven (2.5%) individuals were found to carry resistant E. coli. To heighten the isolation frequency of drug-resistant strains, fecal samples of 244 wild serows in 1983-1984 were cultured directly onto drug-supplemented media. Only 12 (4.9%) serows were shown to have drug-resistant E. coli. No transferable R plasmid was detected among a total of 87 resistant strains from wild serows. In contrast, all 33 captive serows except one which was kept only one day after capture, showed resistant E. coli and 20 (60.6%) serows were excreting R plasmid-carrying E. coli. Of 161 drug-resistant strains from captive serows, 50 (31.1%) were found to carry R plasmids. Wild serows seemed to readily change to harbor resistant E. coli almost as soon they were reared in human areas without direct exposure to drugs. These results lead to the conclusion that drug-resistant E. coli can probably be used as microbial indicator for natural environmental pollution.  相似文献

An immunohistochemical assay was developed and tested for detection of Francisella tularensis lipopolysaccaride antigen in tissues of captive prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). Tissues from 59 cases of F. tularensis were examined by this technique, which was corroborated by direct fluorescent antibody assay and direct isolation of the organism. In infected prairie dogs, studies indicated multiple, severe, necroprurulent foci occurring in the liver, lung, spleen, terminal ileum, and mandibular lymph node. Immunohistochemical analysis of the same formalin-fixed tissues indicated the presence of F. tularensis antigen in neutrophils and macrophages of these lesions and occurring extracellularly in areas of necrosis. This report demonstrates that immunohistochemical analysis is a rapid procedure that can be used to determine the pathogenesis of F. tularensis in rodent populations.  相似文献

An experimental reproduction of CBPP was implemented and the animals were surveyed for serology during 4 months. The ELISA/IgG test detects the antibodies few days after the CF test but is more precise for detection on the longer term. The early antibody detection can be done with the ELISA/IgM test. Circulating antigen (galactan) has been detected in a cow that died of an acute form of CBPP. Excretion of mycoplasmas starts 1 to 2 weeks before the seroconversion: the ELISA/IgG test remains positive during the excretion phase and even longer.  相似文献

Wildlife, once infected, can serve as a reservoir of infectious diseases that form a constant threat to domestic livestock. To make control and eradication programs successful in the long-term, presence of pestivirus in wildlife populations should be monitored. The goal of this study was to investigate seroprevalence of pestivirus in four alpine wild ungulates in the High Valley of Susa, north-west Italy. Species studied were: red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), wild boar (Sus scrofa) and chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). A further goal was using virus neutralisation tests (VNT) for four strains of pestivirus in chamois and wild boar. Three hundred and seventy-five serum samples collected during the hunting season of 1999 were tested for pestivirus specific antibodies. Positive sera of chamois and wild boar were subsequently tested in a VNT with four major subtypes of pestivirus, and virus isolation was performed. No antibodies were found in the 73 samples of roe deer, while 7 (12.5%), 8 (5.9%) and 28 (25.5%) of 56, 136 and 110 samples of wild boar, red deer and chamois were ELISA-positive, respectively. Different ranges of titers were found in the VNT and no pestivirus was isolated in the ELISA-positive wild boar and chamois samples. Several possibilities, which might explain the high seroprevalence in chamois are discussed. Pestivirus antibodies were found in three out of four large alpine ungulates in the High Valley of Susa. Seroprevalence was particularly high in chamois. Further investigation is needed to characterise the pestiviruses that circulate in these animals.  相似文献

Ixodid ticks and other ectoparasites were collected from impala (Aepyceros melampus). blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia) and warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) in the Mlawula-Mbuluzi-Simunye Nature Reserve and Protected Area complex and Hlane Wildlife Sanctuary in the Swaziland lowveld, and from blue wildebeest and warthog in Malolotja Nature Reserve in the highveld from October 1985 to August 1986. The most commonly collected ticks were Amblyosomma hebraeum, Boophilus decoloratus, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, R evertsi evertsi, R maculatus, R muehlensi and R simus. The diversity and intensity of infestation were greater in the lowveld, where the ectoparasite community was similar to that reported from these host species in the eastern Transvaal lowveld and Kwazulu/Natal. A hebraeum was collected throughout the year, but the largest samples were in October and November when the animals were in poor condition. The seasonal occurrence of R. appendiculatus adults on impala was later than that reported for other host species, possibly owing to seasonal changes in habitat use. Seasonal changes in habitat use and temperature effects on pre-oviposition and development of the eggs may have caused the seasonal patterns in the occurrence of B. decoloratus.  相似文献
