Investigation of infertility in a beef herd suggested that IBR virus infection, spread by the bull to susceptible cows during natural mating, was a possible cause. Secondary bacterial infection may have contributed to the problem.  相似文献

During a two year period the spread of bovine syncytial virus was monitored in a closed herd of 50 to 100 milking cows. Out of a nucleus of 49 nonpregnant and pregnant heifers, six were found to be infected with bovine syncytial virus. Virus was detected only in the progeny of infected cows and not in the progeny of uninfected animals. Nineteen progeny of the bovine syncytial virus infected cows were studied in detail and virus was isolated from only four. Horizontal spread of the virus did not occur.  相似文献

Samples of sera were obtained from 5,725 cows in a semiclosed herd. In each of the preceding 7 years, the herd was vaccinated against bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) with killed virus. Neutralizing antibody tests were done on all samples of sera, using cytopathic virus, BVD-TGAC virus, that was antigenically distinct from the vaccine virus. Most samples of sera had high titers of neutralizing antibodies against BVD-TGAC virus. In 48 samples of sera, neutralizing antibodies were not detected against BVD-TGAC virus, but were detected against the vaccine virus. Neutralizing antibodies against selected noncytopathic BVD viruses were not detected in several samples of serum that had neutralizing antibodies against the vaccine virus and BVD-TGAC virus. Noncytopathic BVD virus was isolated from sera obtained from 3 cows less than 4 years old. Two cows were available for further testing, and persistent infection with BVD virus was confirmed in both cows. The BVD viruses isolated from those cows were not neutralized by several samples of sera. Immunoprecipitation of polypeptides induced by the vaccine virus was done with selected samples of serum. Two patterns of immuno-precipitated viral-induced polypeptides were identified. One pattern was consistent with exposure of cows with live virus. The other pattern was consistent with exposure of cows with only the killed virus vaccine.  相似文献

In 1992, significant calf losses occurred between birth and weaning in a 650-cow Saskatchewan beef herd. These losses occurred subsequent to ill-thrift and disease, and every calf necropsied was found to be persistently infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). The objectives of this study were to describe the losses associated with fetal infection with BVDV in this herd and to determine why they occurred. For investigative purposes, blood samples were collected from the entire cow herd and the surviving calves at pregnancy testing in 1992, and tested by virus isolation for BVDV. Between 51 and 71 persistently infected calves were born in 1992. Bovine viral diarrhea virus was only isolated from calves. The only confirmed fetal infections with BVDV were recorded as the birth of persistently infected calves. However, abortions, reduced pregnancy rates, and delayed calvings were also recorded in the cow herd and may have been the result of fetal infections. The herd was monitored again in 1993. Fetal infections with BVDV were recorded as the birth of stunted, deformed, and persistently infected calves. The greatest losses due to fetal infection with BVDV in the 2 years of this study occurred in cows that were 3-years-old at calving (second calves). Bovine viral diarrhea virus appears to have remained endemic in this herd by transmission from persistently infected calves on young 3- and 4-year-old cows to naive calved 2-year-old cows that were mingled with them annually for rebreeding. Significant numbers of the 2-year-old cows remained naive to BVDV, because they were segregated from persistently infected calves at weaning, preventing cross-infection with BVDV.  相似文献

Two Friesian cows, half-sibs by a common dam, produced four bull calves with severe congenital hypotrichosis and incisor anodontia and three normal heifers by six unrelated Holstein, Friesian, Devon and Hereford bulls. The two dams, and their dam, had coats of a short, stubbly nature and the pigmented areas appeared rusty grey rather than black. Pathological examination of skin samples taken from multiple standardised sites from two of the affected calves showed a reduction in the number of large first-formed hair follicles. Smaller calibre hair follicles were present but, unlike those of normal neonatal calves, all were in the telogen (inactive) phase. Although the herd was infected with bovine virus diarrhoea virus there was no convincing evidence that the virus was implicated in the pathogenesis of these cases of congenital hypotrichosis with incisor anodontia. The family breeding information on the few severely affected and normal progeny and mildly affected and normal parents may be explained by the genetic hypothesis of an X-linked incompletely dominant gene.  相似文献

A milking herd consisting of 55 Holstein cows had experienced abortions in several cows, as well as congenital malformations in 1 newborn calf. Bovine viral diarrhea virus was isolated from blood mononuclear cell samples obtained from several cattle, documenting 1 acute infection and 8 persistently infected carriers identified by clinical appearance and laboratory testing. Initial suspicion of persistently infected status in some, but not all animals, was facilitated by poor growth rates in some calves. Virus isolation was performed on transtracheal wash fluid obtained from acutely and persistently infected cattle with respiratory tract infection. We describe the measures taken to identify and characterize the infecting virus strain, and the series of actions taken to identify and eliminate persistently infected carriers in a herd experiencing several related problems that were shown to be caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence of infection with tritrichomonas fetus in a bull population; assess influence of age, breed, and grouping; assess effects on measures of cow performance (pregnancy rate, weaning percentage, weaning weight); and estimate test sensitivity. DESIGN: Epidemiologic study. ANIMALS: 1,383 bulls and records for 28,471 cows bred by these bulls in the immediate past breeding season. PROCEDURE: Bulls in 11 cattle units on a large ranch were tested for T fetus colonization by vigorous preputial scraping and protozoologic culture until no newly infected bulls were identified. Bull infection prevalence within units was calculated and correlated to production measurements reported for each cattle unit. RESULTS: Mean prevalence of T fetus-infected bulls was 11.9% (range, 0 to 35.9%). Significant difference was detected between mean age of infected bulls (5.5 years) and noninfected bulls (3.9 years). Difference in prevalence among breeds was found, although other factors may have influenced this finding. Cow performance measurements (weaning percentage, mean weaning weight, and adjusted mean weaning weight/exposed cow) for cows exposed by breeding to bull groups with the highest prevalence of infection (35.9%) were significantly different from mean values for the entire study population. Test sensitivity for this study (73%) was less than that reported in other studies. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: T fetus infection in a natural service beef herd has an adverse impact on several production measures: Severity of impact is related to prevalence of infection in the bull population, where prevalence is bull age and population dependent.  相似文献

A herd problem of abortions and the birth of malformed calves developed subsequent to a transient febrile illness in adult cows. The herd was not vaccinated against bovine viral diarrhea (BVD). Bovine viral diarrhea virus was isolated from blood of one calf. The problem continued for 8 months. The entire herd was vaccinated with a killed BVD virus product. No further problems developed. This herd problem illustrates one of the many recognized clinical manifestations of BVD.  相似文献

A Holstein-Friesian bull and three Holstein-Friesian cows were seronegative for bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus but were persistently infected with the virus. Virus was isolated from buffy coat cells and nasal and lacrimal secretions during their lifetime, and they remained free of clinical signs of BVD. The three cows were pregnant when purchased, and they gave birth to full-term calves. One calf lived only a few hours, one calf became ill and died within a few days, and one calf became ill and was euthanatized within a few weeks. One cow was then bred and became pregnant but aborted a 7-month fetus. A second cow was bred approximately 5 months after parturition but did not conceive. The third cow was necropsied 6 weeks after calving, because of loss of weight. Although the bull's semen contained BVD virus when seropositive cows were bred, normal calves were born. When seronegative heifers were bred, they became seropositive to BVD virus within two weeks, with higher titers in six weeks. On heifer conceived after one service but aborted a 6-month fetus. Three others continued to have estrous cycles until their titers rose to 1:128, then they conceived and gave birth to normal calves. Another heifer conceived on the first service, had a titer of 1:128 two weeks after breeding, and gave birth to a normal calf.  相似文献

Milk progesterone profiles were used to study the high incidence of embryonic mortality between 30 to 80 days after insemination in 91 cows in a single herd. The progesterone levels dropped to basal values at 46.7 +/- 1.37 days after service in 22 per cent of apparently pregnant cows. Embryo loss occurred significantly more frequently following services by one bull (Z). The mortality rates were 14/32 (44 per cent) in cows conceiving to Z compared with 8/73 (11 per cent) in cows conceiving to other bulls. There was no significant effect of the age of the cow or yield on the incidence of embryonic mortality.  相似文献

During an outbreak of malignant catarrhal fever in a herd of Ankole cattle in a zoological collection, two adult cows and one adult bull from a herd of 15 died or were euthanased between July and November 2004. The clinical, gross postmortem and histological findings were typical of the disease in uk native domestic cattle. The diagnosis was confirmed by serology in two animals, and by pcr in all three; the pcr provided evidence of alcelaphine herpesvirus type 1 infection in all three animals and also of ovine herpesvirus type 2 infection in one.  相似文献

A Brahman x Santa Gertrudis herd of cows bred to a Hereford bull was evaluated because of a 3-year history of several calves born with congenital blindness. Multiple congenital ocular anomalies in 2 calves included microphthalmos, microcornea, microcoria, heterochromia iridis, microlentia, cataracts, retinal dysplasia, retinal detachment, anterior segment dysgenesis, acorea, and proliferation of the anterior neuroectoderm. On the basis of the lack of environmental factors and persistence of an intermittent problem when breeding to a single bull, a genetic defect was diagnosed as the probable cause. Dominant inheritance with varied expressivity may have best explained the lack of obvious signs in the bull, with emergence of various anterior and posterior segment defects in offspring from unrelated cows.  相似文献

Samples of bulk tank milk and cow-composite milk from 23,138 dairy cows from 50 California dairies were examined by use of microbiologic procedures. The number of colonies of mastitis pathogens isolated per milliliter of bulk tank milk (used as a predictor of the percentage of infected cows in the herd) was evaluated, using simple regression analysis and Spearman's rank correlation. Correlations between the pathogens and the percentage of cows in each herd shedding the pathogens were found for Streptococcus agalactiae (r = 0.71) and mycoplasma (r = 0.59), but were considerably lower for other pathogens. When greater than or equal to 4,000 colonies of Streptococcus agalactiae were found per milliliter of bulk tank milk, at least 7% of the cows in the herd was shedding this organism. However, a pattern was not found between the number of mycoplasma colonies per milliliter of bulk tank milk and the percentage of infected cows in the herd.  相似文献

Fecal samples were taken at the time of pregnancy examinations and at parturition from two beef herds. They were also taken from sick calves at the onset of disease, and from 25% of the healthy calves at 15 days of age. All fecal samples were examined by electron microscopy for viruses.

Four cows in herd A were detected excreting coronavirus, one at the time of the pregnancy examinations and three at parturition. The first cow was removed from the herd and the others calved at the end of the season. There were no sick calves.

No cows in herd B were detected excreting virus at the time of pregnancy checks, but fourteen coronavirus and two rotavirus carrier cows were found at parturition. All but two calves sampled had large numbers of virus particles in their feces. Clinical illness was associated with dams shedding virus and with nightly low temperatures.

A program involving greater veterinary participation in detection of estrus and artificial insemination of cattle was evaluated in a 700-cow dairy herd from January 1987 through August 1988. Previous reproductive performance was below normal. First-service pregnancy rate from artificial insemination was 42%, and mean number of nonpregnant days for the cows was 120. Between postpartum days 55 and 62, all cows with functional corpus luteum assessed by rectal palpation were administered prostaglandin each Monday morning. Return visits were made to the herd each Thursday and Friday to observe cows and to inseminate those in estrus. On the other 5 days of the week, the owner or his employees inseminated all cows in estrus. The first-service pregnancy rate for 842 cows observed in estrus and inseminated by the veterinarian was 59%. The pregnancy rate for cows inseminated by the owner and his employees increased from 42% to 50%. The mean number of nonpregnant days for all 700 cows decreased from 120 to 98 days, resulting in approximately $46,000 of increased income for the dairyman or approximately a 4 to 1 return on investment in veterinary service. Results indicate that veterinarians could improve herd reproductive performance and solve chronic herd breeding problems by more actively participating with their clients in estrus detection and artificial insemination programs in cattle. The program allows practicing veterinarians an opportunity to observe cows for estrous behavior, establish their own pregnancy rate data, demonstrate to owners the importance of observing primary signs of estrus, and teach expert artificial insemination techniques.  相似文献

Genital samples collected at autopsy from 193 beef cows representing 22 different herds in Northern Australia yielded only one isolate of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus. Serological evidence showed 59 per cent of similar cows had prior infection with this virus and of 19 sero-positive cows tested, 11 (58-2 per cent) shed detectable IBR virus from the vagina after treatment with corticosteroids. Transitory lesions of the vagina and vulva developed in five of the treated cows. Twenty-six (65 per cent) of 40 sero-positive bulls shed detectable IBR virus into the prepuce after corticosteroid treatment. Except for one bull, virus was not isolated after corticosteroid treatment of sero-negative animals. IBR virus and mucosal disease (MD) virus were not isolated from nasal swabs before or after corticosteroid administration. No correlation was observed between initial circulating antiboyd titre and virus excretion after treatment. There were no significant changes in levels of serum antibody during the virus excretion period.  相似文献

As a result of a BVDV infection in a herd consisting of 95 adult cattle 17 cows aborted their calves within a period of 3.5 months, one third got severe diarrhoea, 3 cows died and an increased percentage of the cattle got lochiometra after calving or abortion. The disease was diagnosed by paired serological testing of cattle with diarrhoea or abortion and post mortem examination of several aborted calves. From one foetus BVDV virus was isolated and subsequently subtyped by sequencing. Of aborting cattle, the testing results were influenced by the interval between infection and abortion. These results indicate that a primary infection with BVDV subtype 1b can cause severe clinical symptoms in a dairy herd.  相似文献

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection in an Israeli dairy cattle herd is described. The disease was characterized by ulcerative granulomatous lesions, which occurred in an epidemic form. Thirty-two cows and two heifers were affected, the ratio of the number affected to number at risk being 17.5 : 1 and 9.5 : 1, respectively. The culling rate was 50% of the affected animals. Most of the affected animals were cows (91.2%), with one first-calving cow (2.9%) and two heifers (5.9%) also affected. The infection occurred during the summer to autumn months (August-December), and lasted 118 days. The incubation period is about 2 months. The disease appeared in two clinical forms - cutaneous and mastitic - or as a mixed form. C. pseudotuberculosis organisms that were isolated from the ulcerative granulomatous lesions and from milk samples failed to reduce nitrate. A decrease in milk production (4%) and an increase in the bulk-milk somatic cell count from a herd mean of 240 x 10(3) mL(-1) to 460 x 10(3) mL(-1) were noted during the morbidity period. The organism was isolated from milk samples of eight animals (25%). Clinical, epizootiological and microbiological aspects of the infection are described.  相似文献
