Malignant melanoma of the horn base in a Pygora goat.

A case of malignant melanoma, originating at the base of the left horn, was diagnosed in a white 11-year-old Pygora doe. At necropsy, the goat had an ulcerated, black-pigmented, 2.5-cm mass at the base of the left horn. Firm masses diffusely black on the cut surface were present at the left horn base, subcutaneously over the frontal bones, and infiltrating into the frontal sinuses, the submandibular lymph node, and left parotid salivary gland. The left maxillary premolars and molars were loosened from the periodontia. Multiple black foci of metastasis were observed in the liver. Histologically, the masses consisted predominantly of moderately pleomorphic, polyhedral to spindle cells that contained variable amounts of dark brown intracytoplasmic pigment granules. The tumor cells were positive for Melan A by immunohistochemical staining.

Orthodontic correction of a base narrow mandibular canine tooth in a cat

A 6-month-old cat was diagnosed with a lingually displaced mandibular canine tooth causing palatal trauma. This case report describes the correction and outcome for orthodontic movement of the left mandibular canine tooth.     

Preliminary experiences with the treatment of shock in horses with a plasma expander from a starch base

HAES Steril 10% is a colloidal plasma expander rarely used in veterinary medicine. In this study HAES was used in clinical cases for the treatment of shock and in a comparative hypervolemic hemodilution study (HAES versus lactated Ringer's solution) using two experimental horses. Injection of a HAES volume equivalent to 10% of estimated blood volume resulted in a highly significant drop in PCV and in a significant drop in total protein concentration. Half live of HAES was approximately two hours. No incompatibility reactions were observed. In man HAES improves microcirculation. Studies in progress may confirm a similar effect in the equine.

Increased occurrence of nuclear cataract in the calf after erection of a mobile phone base station

We examined and monitored a dairy farm in which a large number of calves were born with nuclear cataracts after a mobile phone base station had been erected in the vicinity of the barn. Calves showed a 3.5 times higher risk for heavy cataract if born there compared to Swiss average. All usual causes such as infection or poisoning, common in Switzerland, could be excluded. The real cause of the increased incidence of cataracts remains unknown.
