Abstract. The fishery of Parakrama Samudra, an ancient man-made lake of 2662 ha in Sri Lanka (8°-10°N; 80°-82°E), as in most other man-made reservoirs in the island, is dominated by the exotic cichlid Sarotherodon mossambicus (Peters), introduced in 1952. The fluctuations in catch per unit/fisherman over the period 1960 to 1982 are shown to be dependent on the yearly fluctuations in the water-level, the changes in the water-level effects being manifested in the fishery after a period of 3 years. The above results were arrived at by auto-correlation analysis of yearly catch per unit effort against the fluctuation of the water level at the main sluice. The changes in yield in a particular year are correlated to the changes in the water level and are described by the equation;
where Y = yield in kg fisherman-1 month-1 in year t and X = fluctuations in the water-level in year t - 3. The available growth rates in natural and semi-natural impoundments also indicate that the size at which S. mossambicus enter the fishery in Parakrama Samudra corresponds to their size in the third year of life (age 2+). The significance of the above observations is discussed on the basis of available knowledge on the reproductive cycle and the nesting requirements of S. mossambicus which are achieved when significant fluctuations in the reservoir level take place by making available optimal water depths in areas with a suitable substratum. The possible use of the above criteria as a management measure is also briefly discussed in the light of possible irrigational and fisheries conflicts in the utilization of the reservoir resources.  相似文献

Abstract. The inland fishery in Sri Lanka (6–10°N; 79–82°E) is essentially a fishery confined to man-made lakes and is dominated by the introduced cichlid Sarotherodon mossambicus (Peters). Catch statistics of 20 such major reservoirs indicate that the yield of this species ranges from 64·0 to 918 kg per ha and accounts for between 56 and 99% of the total yield in individual reservoirs. The yield of S. mossambicus is closely related to the fishing pressure exerted. Catch/effort data from the individual reservoir fisheries when analysed collectively simulate changes in a single large fishery. In the fishery the relationship of yield to effort is described by the equation: Y = 4·OX – 53·8X ( r = 0·92; P < 0·001), where Y = yield in kg per ha per annum and X = number of craft-days per ha per annum, indicating that the reservoirs in Sri Lanka remain underfished. However, very high increases in fishing pressure in two reservoirs, for which data are available over a 5-year period, indicate that the increases have resulted in a significant decline in the catch per unit effort. The reasons for the success of the S. mossambicus fishery in individual reservoirs, and also simulation of features of a single large fishery in reservoirs, with widely different hydrological and limnological regimes, are discussed in qualitative terms. It is hypothesized that the abundance is determined by factors other than food availability. Fresh management strategies to optimize the fishery from the point of view of optimal fishing pressure permissible from the present analysis are suggested.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to identify suitable methods for broodstock rearing, induced breeding and grow‐out culture of Holothuria scabra in Sri Lanka. Two hundred and seventy‐two brooders (500–600 g) collected from off Mannar were individually packed in oxygen‐filled polythene bags with and without sea water and transported to a sea cucumber hatchery at Kalpitiya. Lagoon pens, sand‐filled fibreglass tanks and bare tanks were used in triplicates to maintain brooders. Spawning was initiated using air dry, water jet and thermal‐stimulation methods. Hatchery produced juveniles with an average weight of 11 ± 5 g were reared (2 individuals m?2) in lagoon pens, mud ponds and fibreglass tanks in triplicates. The significantly high evisceration rate was observed when brooders were transported without sea water (t‐test, P < 0.05). Brooders maintained in bare tanks showed a significant weight reduction than the brooders in sand‐filled tanks and lagoon pens (anova , P < 0.05, d.f. = 2). Thermal stimulation (ambient temperature ± 3–5°C) was found to be the most successful method of spawning initiation of H. scabra. The mean (±SD) percentage males and females participated for spawning per trial was 9.2 (±10) and 4.6 (±5.6) respectively. On an average, 1.16 millions of eggs (±1.03 SD, n = 5) were obtained per spawning trial. H. scabra juveniles reared in tanks showed significantly lower growth rate than the juveniles in pens and ponds (anova , P < 0.05). Lagoon pens and sand‐filled tanks are suitable to maintain brooders and lagoon pens can be successfully used for mass rearing of juveniles.  相似文献

Reservoirs are mostly managed at local scales as spatially independent units. A basin‐scale perspective may increase awareness at a broader scope and generate insight not evident at local scales. We examined the array of reservoir attributes and fisheries in the Mississippi Basin to identify management opportunities. The basin is the third largest in the world and includes over 1,700 reservoirs >100 ha, the most of any river basin. Our bird's‐eye view shows a piecemeal approach where reservoirs are mostly administered at the local level. Basin‐wide or catchment coordination to holistically address problems that recur across the basin is mostly lacking. A basin‐wide coordination arrangement could facilitate various facets of reservoir management. We reviewed governance arrangements in major river basins across the globe and concluded that the basin‐wide administrative layer we encourage for the Mississippi Basin may already exist in some basins but may not be directly applicable everywhere.  相似文献

Selectivity of Amblygaster sirm by gill nets of seven mesh sizes ranging from 2.3 to 3.8 cm stretched mesh was studied for a period of 12 months in the coastal waters off Negombo on the west coast of Sri Lanka. The size range of fish caught was 9.0–22.0 cm. Selection by mesh sizes smaller than 3.0 cm was towards the lower end of the selection curve.

Estimated values for selection factors ranged from 5.11 to 6.03 and those for optimum selection lengths varied from 12.9 to 19.7 cm. The highest selection factor was observed for 2.9 cm mesh, probably due to wedging of larger individuals in this mesh.  相似文献

The roles of homestead ponds and surrounding dike production of vegetables on farms in peri‐urban and rural communities in central north Bangladesh were assessed. A baseline survey sought to characterize actively managed (“active”) pond‐dike systems, producing fish and vegetables, in terms of productivity and impact compared to less intensively integrated (“passive”) and control, no‐pond households. A longitudinal survey was carried out over 12 months to explore the relationship between seasonality and livelihood outcomes in relation to location and well‐being status. Active homestead pond operators tended to have greater access to information and credit compared to passive and non‐pond households; this was likely linked to their greater literacy and greater social connectedness. They enjoyed higher incomes through fish sales and consumed more fish than passive households, which was related to their higher production, in turn explained mainly by the use of more inputs. All active, 50% passive and 38% non‐pond households were involved in vegetable cultivation; however, significantly more vegetables were produced by active households than others. The impacts of pond‐dike production were more critical for food‐vulnerable, rural households than peri‐urban households prior to monsoon rice harvest; worse‐off households suffered more prior to the “irrigated rice” harvest. Fish and vegetables raised on farm were most important during lower income months. The study supports the view that small homestead ponds can contribute to the wider food supply, and that such “quasi‐peasant” forms of aquaculture contribute to reduced poverty and enhanced dietary diversity and food security in the broader population.  相似文献

The ocean survival of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) off the Pacific Northwest coast has been related to oceanographic conditions regulating lower trophic level production during their first year at sea. Coastal upwelling is recognized as the primary driver of seasonal plankton production but as a single index upwelling intensity has been an inconsistent predictor of coho salmon survival. Our goal was to develop a model of upwelling‐driven meso‐zooplankton production for the Oregon shelf ecosystem that was more immediately linked to the feeding conditions experienced by juvenile salmon than a purely physical index. The model consisted of a medium‐complexity plankton model linked to a simple one‐dimensional, cross‐shelf upwelling model. The plankton model described the dynamics of nitrate, ammonium, small and large phytoplankton, meso‐zooplankton (copepods), and detritus. The model was run from 1996 to 2007 and evaluated on an interannual scale against time‐series observations of copepod biomass. The model’s ability to capture observed interannual variability improved substantially when the copepod community size distribution was taken into account each season. The meso‐zooplankton production index was significantly correlated with the ocean survival of hatchery coho salmon from the Oregon production area, although the coastal upwelling index that drove the model was not itself correlated with survival. Meso‐zooplankton production within the summer quarter (July–September) was more strongly correlated with coho survival than was meso‐zooplankton production in the spring quarter (April–June).  相似文献

The distribution pattern of albacore, Thunnus alalunga, in the Indian Ocean was analyzed based on catch data from the Taiwanese tuna longline fishery during the period 1979–85. The Taiwanese tuna fishery began operating in the Indian Ocean in 1967. We used a geographic information system to compile a fishery and environmental database and statistically explored the catch per unit effort (CPUE) distribution of albacore. Our results indicated that immature albacore were mainly distributed in areas south of 30°S although some displayed a north–south seasonal migration. Mature albacore, which were mainly concentrated between 10°S and 25°S, also showed a north–south migration. Within 10°S and 30°S, the separation of mature, spawning, and immature albacore life history stages roughly coincided with the boundaries of the three oceanic current systems in the Indian Ocean. The optimal environmental variables for CPUE prediction by stepwise discriminant analysis differed among life history stages. For immature albacore, the sea surface variables sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll concentration and surface salinity were significant. For mature albacore, SST was significant, while for spawning albacore, the sub‐surface variables temperature at 100 m and oxygen at 200 m were significant. Spawning albacore evidently prefer deep oceanographic conditions. Our results on the oceanographic conditions preferred by different developmental stages of albacore in the Indian Ocean were compatible with previous studies found in the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Yellowfin tuna are currently considered by the member nations of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission to constitute a single stock in the Indian Ocean due to a lack of knowledge about yellowfin tuna population structure in this region. Previous studies of Indian Ocean yellowfin tuna based on morphology and fisheries data have hinted at the presence of multiple stocks in the region, and further, that stocks may mix in the north western Indian Ocean around Sri Lanka. To better understand the genetic stock structure of yellowfin tuna in the north western Indian Ocean, we examined genetic variation in 285 yellowfin individuals collected over a period of 4 years from six fishing grounds around Sri Lanka and a single fishing ground in the Maldive Islands. We screened variation in both the mitochondrial ATPase 6 and 8 region (498 bp) and three microsatellite loci. Significant genetic differentiation was detected among sites for mitochondrial DNA (ΦST = 0.1285, P < 0.001) and at two microsatellite loci (FST = 0.0164, P < 0.001 and FST = 0.0064, P < 0.001), while spatial analysis of molecular variance of mtDNA data identified three genetically heterogenous groups namely; western, south eastern and all remaining sites. These results suggest the possibility that genetically discrete yellowfin tuna populations may be present in the north western Indian Ocean.  相似文献

Well‐managed fisheries support healthy ocean ecosystems, coastal livelihoods and food security for millions of people. However, many communities lack the resources to implement effective fisheries management. No‐take marine reserves are a ubiquitous management intervention that provide conservation benefits and under certain circumstances can provide long‐term fishery benefits as a result of larval and adult emigration from reserve boundaries. But, support for marine reserves by fishery participants is often limited due to short‐term economic impacts resulting from foregone yields. In this study, we examine the timing and magnitude of economic impacts of marine reserves by utilizing a novel metric that discounts future economic benefits of enhanced productivity resulting from reserve protection. We ask under what circumstances long‐term benefits outweigh short‐term impacts of marine reserve implementation. We simulate fisheries for six species commonly caught in coastal environments and show that while conservation benefits accrue rapidly, more than a decade is often required to provide net fisheries benefits, even under circumstances favourable for reserves. We explore a suite of strategies for mitigating these short‐term economic losses, including flexible reserve designs, loans and enhanced ex‐vessel revenues. Results indicate that market‐based incentives show promise to offset short‐term economic losses. Our findings highlight the importance of understanding and communicating likely outcomes from marine reserve implementation and the need to engage supply chain actors to incentivize marine conservation that minimizes impacts to fishermen.  相似文献

Coastal aquaculture in Aceh was severely affected by the Asian Tsunami in December 2004. Capacity building among stakeholders was one of the key activities implemented by various agencies during the post‐tsunami aquaculture rehabilitation and subsequent development phase. The main objective was improving production efficiencies and farmer incomes. This article describes the process of implementation of the approach and crop outcomes until the end of 2009. In 2009, 1135 farmers and their 1296 ponds were ‘organized’ in 27 clusters across 84 villages of three districts to implement better management practices (BMP). Interventions reduced the prevalence of shrimp disease outbreaks significantly in participating ponds (22.45%) compared with non‐participating ponds (62.64%). Among the normal harvested ponds, though there was no significant improvement in shrimp yield but costs of shrimp production were significantly reduced by 12.1% and benefit cost ratio was significantly increased by 0.523 points in normal harvested participating ponds compared with normal harvested non‐participating ponds. Multivariable logistic regression analysis with 27 independent variables including a set of BMP showed that many factors were significantly associated with the normal harvests, improved yield and profits. The study shows that simple management improvements can reduce risks and improve economic returns.  相似文献

Different synthetic forms of supplemental methionine (Met) are produced commercially by various manufacturers. Limited information exists on the bioavailability of these different forms in commercially relevant fish species. The objective of this study was to compare the relative bioavailability of L‐methionine and a methionine hydroxy analogue calcium salt (MHA‐Ca) to DL‐methionine in a commercially relevant species, rainbow trout, using a linear slope‐ratio assay. In addition, the ability of the rainbow trout to effectively convert the D‐isomer of methionine into the biologically active L‐isomer was studied by comparing the relative bioavailability of L‐methionine to DL‐methionine. Nine (9) diets were created from a methionine‐deficient basal diet which was supplemented with graded equimolar levels of methionine (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% of diet by weight) from either DL‐methionine, L‐methionine and methionine hydroxy analogue calcium salt (MHA‐Ca). Diets were fed in triplicate (IBW = 24.0 ± 0.6 g) for 12 weeks using a pair‐feeding protocol. The basal diet was formulated to be deficient in both methionine (0.5%) and cysteine (0.3%), whereas meeting all other known nutritional requirements of rainbow trout. MHA‐Ca was found to be less available (P < 0.05) than DL‐methionine with relative bioavailability values of 69%, 60% and 73% based upon weight gain, growth rate (TGC) and retained nitrogen values respectively. No significant differences (P > 0.05) in bioavailability were found between DL‐methionine and L‐methionine. These findings lead to the conclusion that differences in bioavailability do exist between sources of synthetic methionine, additionally findings suggest that rainbow trout are able to effectively convert the D‐isomer of methionine into the L‐isomer without significantly affecting fish performance.  相似文献

Settlement patterns of great scallop (Pecten maximus) postlarvae and other benthic species in the Bay of Brest were studied from 2-D and 3-D collectors to clarify biotic interactions at the postlarval stage. Plane tiles became colonized mainly by epifaunal suspension feeders, while the 3-D substrata collected a more diverse fauna. Both species diversity and total abundance were higher in Netlon bags, compared with sandstone tiles. However, hydroids, bryozoans, tubicolous polychaetes, a number of epifaunal molluscs and macroalgae were more abundant on tiles. Between-sites differences in taxonomic group abundances mostly reflected the benthic fauna and flora beneath the collectors and would be explained by differential settlement and survival, according to local environmental conditions. Sediment type, depth, salinity, water turbulence, food and biotic interactions would be the factors regulating settlement. Bryozoans, hydrozoans, Anomia ephippium, Crepidula fornicata, mussels, tubicolous polychaetes, Pisidia longicornis, Hiatella arctica, Aequipecten opercularis and Chlamys varia were the main potential competitors of Pecten maximus collected. Crabs and Nassaridae would account for most of the potential scallop predators. Possible ways of improving scallop spat collection and cultivation are discussed with reference to the efficiency and placement of collectors, to environmental characteristics and to the intensity of biotic interactions at the postlarval stage.  相似文献

In mass culture of Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis, yolk‐sac larvae of other species are fed as a major prey item to tuna larvae from 7 to 8 mm in total length. Marked growth variations in tuna larvae are frequently observed after feeding of yolk‐sac larvae, and this variation in the growth of tuna larvae is subsequently a factor leading to the prevalence of cannibalistic attacks. To elucidate details of the mortality process of hatchery‐reared tuna larvae after the initiation of yolk‐sac larvae feeding, we compared the nutritional and growth histories of the surviving (live) tuna larvae to those of the dead fish, found dead on the bottom of the tank, as direct evidence of their mortality processes. Cause of mortality of tuna larvae 3 and 5 days after the initiation of feeding of yolk‐sac larvae was assessed from nitrogen stable isotope and otolith microstructure analyses. Stable isotope analysis revealed that the live fish rapidly utilized prey fish larvae, but the dead fish had depended more on rotifers relative to the live fish 3 and 5 days after the initiation of feeding of yolk‐sac larvae. The growth histories based on otolith increments were compared between the live and dead tuna larvae and indicated that the live fish showed significantly faster growth histories than dead fish. Our results suggest that fast‐growing larvae at the onset of piscivory could survive in the mass culture tank of Pacific bluefin tuna and were characterized by growth‐selective mortality.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal trends of sailfish catch rates in the southwestern and equatorial Atlantic Ocean in relation to environmental variables were investigated using generalized additive models and fishery‐dependent data. Two generalized additive models were fit: (i) ‘spatio‐temporal’, including only latitude, longitude, month, and year; and (ii) ‘oceanographic’, including sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll‐a concentration, wind velocity, bottom depth, and depth of mixed layer and year. The spatio‐temporal model explained more (average ~40%) of the variability in catch rates than the oceanographic model (average ~30%). Modeled catch rate predictions showed that sailfish tend to aggregate off the southeast coast of Brazil during the peak of the spawning season (November to February). Sailfish also seem to aggregate for feeding in two different areas, one located in the mid‐west Atlantic to the south of ~15°S and another area off the north coast of Brazil. The oceanographic model revealed that wind velocity and chlorophyll‐a concentration were the most important variables describing catch rate variability. The results presented herein may help to understand sailfish movements in the Atlantic Ocean and the relationship of these movements with environmental effects.  相似文献
