Several successful attempts have been made to induce swine dysentery in pigs using pure cultures of Treponema hyodysen-teriae (Taylor & Alexander 1971, Harris et al. 1972, Akkermans & Pomper 1973, Hughes et al. 1975). In these studies, either conventional or specific-pathogen-free pigs were used. In the present study, 2 approximately 8 weeks old conventional pigs (Nos. 1 and 2) were purchased and fed the same basic ration as used by Teige et al. (1977). In addition, 10 % cod liver oil was incorporated in the diet at each feeding. After a feeding period of 25 days rectal swabs were applied and examined for the presence of spirochaetes. The pigs were then fed a 3 days old primary and pure culture of T. hyodysenteriae on TSA-S400 medium (Songer et al. 1976). The culture originated from the colon of a pig with swine dysentery (Pig No. 4, Teige et al. 1977). Each pig received the agar contents of 5 petri dishes which were mixed with the food.  相似文献

An experimental generalized Shwartzman reaction (GSR) induced in pigs by endotoxin from Escherichia coli has been reported previously (Teige et al. 1973, Quast 1973). The diet given to the pigs seemed to influence the outcome of the experiments. It has been found difficult to provoke GSR in pigs fed a commercial diet, even when the E. coli endotoxin is given as a single, relatively large dose or as 2 properly spaced doses (Teige et al., Nordstoga 1976). Quast induced the GSR by continuous infusion of endotoxin. In connection with 1 experiment in pigs, changes indicative of GSR were observed among a group of animals fed a commercial diet and receiving a small single dose of endotoxin. During recent years, Yersinia enterocolitica has been isolated from humans and various animal species in connection with intestinal disorders, such as acute ileitis and appendicitis. Cases of septicaemia, polyarthritis and erythema nodosum have also been described (Mollaret & Destombes 1964, Nilehn 1969, Winblad 1969, Lassen 1972, Langford 1972). Y. enterocolitica has been isolated most frequently from chinchillas and hares, but sporadic isolations from deer, cow, horse, rabbit, goat and dog have been reported (Langford, Krogstad et al. 1972). In Norway, an outbreak of the disease in a goat herd is the only described case of yersiniosis among animal species (Krogstad et al.). Morphological and histological changes were described in regional ileitis of pigs, which constitutes one of the forms of the complex of diseases referred to as intestinal adenomatosis of pigs. The most pronounced changes were concentrated on the ileum and were characterized, from the morphological point of view, by a distention of the intestinal wall and from the histological point of view, by proliferation of the epithelial cells of ileum, proliferation of the lymphatic tissue of tunica mucosae and submucosae, and hypertrophy of tunica muscularis. Focal symmetrical poliomyelomalacia (FSP) is a neurological disorder mainly described in pigs in connection with experimental or spontaneous cases of selenium toxicosis (Harrison etal. 1983, Wendtetal. 1992, Wilson etal. 1983 & 1989). However, a few cases of FSP have been reported in other domestic animals including sheep, goat, and cattle (Innes & Plow-right 1955, Cordy et al. 1984, Bonniwell & Barlow 1985, Palmer et al. 1986). Common for reports on FSP in other species than pigs is an unsolved aetiology. In cattle only 1 report on FSP has been published previously describing 2 cases (Palmer et al. 1986). The present report describes a further case of FSP in cattle. A 4-month- old Red Danish × American Brown Swiss calf (♀) suddenly became lame on both fore limbs and unwilling to rise. The calf had a swelling around the coronary band and a temperature of 40°C. The calf was treated with antibiotics by a veterinary surgeon. The condition got severe during the next 24 h, and the calf became unable to stand on the fore limbs while the function of the rear limbs was normal. As the condition progressively got worse during the next week, the calf was euthanized by intravenous injection of pentobarbitone sodium and submitted for necropsy.  相似文献

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) caused a large epizootic of acute respiratory disease in Japan in 1968—69 (Inaba et al. 1970, Inaba et al. 1972). A much smaller outbreak occurred in Switzerland (Paccaud & Jacquier 1970). In Belgium the virus has been isolated from an outbreak of respiratory disease (Wellemans et al. 1970). BRSV has later been proved an important causal agent of respiratory disorders in the same country (Wellemans & Leiinen 1975). In England and USA the virus has caused and been isolated from outbreaks of acute respiratory disease in calves (Jacobs & Edington 1971, Rosenquist 1974, Smith et al. 1974). In Denmark BRSV has sporadically been isolated from pneumonic calf lungs (Bitsch et al. 1976).  相似文献

In the present study, both the ELISA test and immunohistochemical staining were used to investigate the influence of artificially induced ileitis on the chemical coding of enteric neurons in the pig. The ileum wall in experimental (E) pigs was injected in multiple sites with 4% paraformaldehyde to induce inflammation, while in the control (C) animals, the organ was injected with 0.1M phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). Three days after ileitis induction, samples of ileum wall from all the animals were evaluated for VIP, SP, CGRP, NPY, GAL and SOM concentration (ELISA test) and the expression of these biologically active substances by the enteric neurons (immunohistochemical staining). Quantitative results showed that ileitis decreased tissue concentration of VIP, CGRP and SOM but increased tissue concentration of SP, NPY and GAL. Immunochemistry revealed that in both the experimental and control pigs, VIP-positive (VIP+) nerve fibers supplied mainly ileal blood vessels, and the labeled pericarya were located in the inner (ISP) and outer submucous plexus (OSP). SP+ and CGRP+ nerve terminals were found in both the mucous and muscular membrane, while the labeled pericarya were found in ISP, OSP and myenteric plexus (MP). In both C and E pigs, the very few nerve terminals containing NPY and SOM were located mainly in the mucous membrane. NPY- or/and SOM-immunopositive nerve cell bodies were found in ISP, OSP and MP. GAL+ nerve fibers supplied all layers of the ileum and were most numerous in the muscular membrane, while the labeled pericarya were present in all the enteric plexuses. The present results suggest that enteric neurons are highly plastic in their response to inflammation.  相似文献

During recent years nosematosis has been a major problem in the breeding of blue fox in the Scandinavian countries, causing heavy losses among growing pups (Nordstoga 1972, Nordstoga et al. 1974). The lack of reliable methods for diagnosing the infection in live foxes has so far made epizootiologic studies of the disease very difficult. However, reports on the IFAT in rabbits with nosematosis (Cox et al. 1972, Chalupsky et al. 1971, 1973, 1974), encouraged the search for a method of detecting Nosema antibodies in fox sera.  相似文献

Porcine toxoplasmosis generally occurs as a latent disease in adolescent and adult pigs, but now and then also manifests itself as a fatal congenital disease in piglets. It is known to occur in USA (Farrel et al. 1952), Germany (Becker 1954), Denmark (Momberg-Jørgensen 1956), Mexico (Varela et al. 1956), Japan (Sato et al. 1958), England (Harding et al. 1961) and Sweden (Hansen et al. to be published).  相似文献

Actinobacillosis in pigs seems to be relatively rare and when it does occur, it usually manifests itself as acute septicaemia during the first weeks of life (Zimmermann 1965). Polyarthritis, pneumonia and heart lesions as well as petechial haemorrhages in skin, viscera and kidneys are also frequently found (MacDonald et al. 1976, Jones & Simmons 1971). Both Actinobacillus suis and Actinobacillus equuli have been isolated from such cases (Pedersen 1977).  相似文献

Streptococcus suis is an important pig pathogen which is associated with respiratory problems, meningitis and less fre-quently with a variety of other conditions(Hommez et al. 1986). S. suis type 1 causes disease mainly in 1–2 week old pigs while serotype 2 is found commoaily in 2–22 week old pigs, S. suis type 2 is a zoonosis. It can cause meningitis and septicaemia in man (Christensen & Kronvall 1985). Several other serotypes of S. suis have also been identified on the basis of the capsular poly-saccharide (Perch et al. 1983, Hommez et al. 1986). We present a case where we isolated S. suis types 1 and 2 from the brain and lungs respectively of the same diseased suckling piglet. This i/s the first reported case of S. suis types 1 and 2 in Finland.  相似文献

Necrotizing infectious enteritis provoked by CI. perfringens type C has been diagnosed with increasing frequency among piglets in Danish herds since 1963.On a clinical basis the disease is difficult to differentiate from other enteric diseases (Høgh 1967).In the small intestine, the infection gives rise to postmortem findings which, under Danish conditions, have not been observed in any other disease affecting baby pigs.The aim of the present study is to describe the patho-anatomical and histo-pathological changes which occur in spontaneously infected pigs.  相似文献

The first report of the isolation of adenovirus from a pig was that of Haig et al. in 1964. The virus was isolated from faeces and was serologically different from many of the common human adenoviruses. In Denmark, six strains have been found in organ material from pigs (Rasmussen 1966). In the USA Kasza (1966) isolated an adenovirus from the brain of a pig with encephalitic symptoms, and in West Germany the virus was demonstrated in tissue culture of pig kidney from a group of animals where up to every tenth kidney was found to be infected (Mahnet & Bibrack 1966).The present study deals with virus strains isolated from non-inoculated cell cultures or from normal or diseased pigs. It includes a serological classification of strains isolated from organ material and a study of the cytopathogenic effect of the viruses in cell cultures of the kidneys and lungs of pig embryos and of the kidneys of bacon pigs and calves.  相似文献

Biochemical and hematological analyses of blood and serum were performed in pigs with regional ileitis and in wasting pigs with a negative necropsy. In sera from pigs with regional ileitis the levels of total protein, albumin, transferrin, alkaline phosphatase and zinc were significantly decreased compared with normal pigs of the same age. The number of white blood cells, and the concentration of Cortisol and α1-antitrypsin were significantly increased. In wasting pigs with early signs of regional ileitis or with a negative necropsy the same blood changes were observed but to a less degree. It was concluded that a wasting syndrome after weaning may precede regional ileitis. Concerning the etiology of regional ileitis the significance of malabsorption and wasting syndrome in combination with invasion of intestinal intercellular microorganisms is discussed.  相似文献

Eggs from the pig roundworm Ascaris suum are easily obtainable in large numbers from uterus of adult worms. It is therefore natural that eggs isolated from that organ have been used almost exclusively in experimental ascariasis, both in the natural host (Kelley & Nayak 1965, Gaafar & Keittevuti 1972, Andersen et al. 1973, Jørgensen et al. 1975 and others) and in small laboratory animals (Jeska et al. 1969, Berger 1971 and others). In some cases no details are given on the origin and preparation of the infective eggs or the eggs may originate both from uteri of adult worms and from pig faeces (Kelley et al. 1957).  相似文献

Neospora caninum is a newly described coccidian parasite which has been found in various species such as the dog, cattle, horse, sheep and goat. Morphologically it resembles Toxoplasma gondii with which it is related (Holmdahl et al. 1994), and with which it has earlier been confused. The life cycle of N caninum is only partially known. Tachyzoites and tissue cysts are the only known stages of the parasite, and transplacental transmission is the only known route of infection. Subclini-cally infected dams can transmit the parasite to their fetuses and successive offspring from the same mother might be born infected (Dubey et al. 1990b). Clinical neosporosis is mostly seen in pups or young dogs, and the majority or all pups in a litter are often affected. The disease is characterized by ascending paralysis of the legs, with the hind legs more severely affected than the front legs, paralysis of the jaw, difficulty in swallowing and muscle flaccidity and atrophy (Dubey 1992, Dubey & Lindsay 1993). Fatal infections with N caninum in dogs have been reported from many countries, e.g. Norway (Bjerkäs & Presthus 1988), USA (Dubey et al. 1988), Sweden (Uggla et al. 1989a,b) and the United Kingdom (Dubey et al. 1990a). Serological surveys for antibodies to N. caninum in dogs from Kansas, USA and England have shown a prevalence of 2 and 13%, respectively (Lindsay et al. 1990, Trees et al. 1993).  相似文献

Forms of enteric disease caused by Clostridium perfringens type C are critically reviewed with emphasis on practical aspects and recent research findings. Available data indicate that more animal species may be fatally infected by type C of this organism than by any other type of C. perfringens. Fatal cases have been recorded in pigs, cattle, sheep, horses and humans. Newborn animals are typically the most susceptible, possibly related to aspects of bacterial colonization, intestinal digestive functions, and to some other, unexplained, factors. Both beta toxin and the bacterial cells are required to initiate pathogenesis at the tips of jejunal villi, and subsequent massive adherence of these cells to necrotic mucosa is a characteristic feature. Although major lesions occur in the intestine, death is due to toxemia. The disease can be effectively controlled by vaccination of the dam. Epizootiology of this disease is a possible area for further studies.  相似文献
