Red Gold is a midseason maturity potato with pink-red skin and a bright yellow flesh. It is characterized by having a high set per plant of medium-small sized tubers. Marketable yields in Ontario, Canada are similar to or slightly less than Conestoga, Yukon Gold, and Superior. Boiling, baking, and field chip quality are acceptable with medium specific gravities (1.070–1.080). Short tuber dormancy makes this variety well adapted for whole seed tuber production for fall export markets. Red Gold has performed well in trials in Uruguay. Red Gold is moderately resistant to scab, field resistant to virus Y and leafroll, and susceptible to mild mosaic.  相似文献

‘Dakota Rose’ is a medium-maturing, white-fleshed, red-skinned cultivar that retains its bright red color in storage. Tubers have very smooth skin with an oblong shape. Yields are equivalent, or superior, to ‘Red Norland’, but lower than ‘Red Pontiac’, a late-maturing cultivar. Dakota Rose produces a high percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers and few oversized tubers. Sensory evaluation scores for baked, boiled, and microwaved potatoes are similar to Red Norland and Red Pontiac, standard red tablestock cultivars. The specific gravity averaged about 1.067 across irrigated and non-irrigated sites, a typical value for a red tablestock cultivar. Adequate skin set for handling has often been difficult to achieve; application of nitrogen early in the growing season, coupled with chemical vinekill 3 weeks prior to harvest aids in minimizing the problem. Heat therapy and meristem tip propagation were used to develop two or three virus-free clones of 10 cultivars from the following sources: Epicure from British Columbia and Scotland; Katahdin, Kennebec, Keswick, Red Pontiac and Sebago from British Columbia and New Brunswick; Norchip from Alberta, Quebec and Washington; Norland from Alberta, British Columbia and North Dakota; Red La Soda from British Columbia, Nebraska and North Dakota; and White Rose from British Columbia and North Dakota. Tests prior to treatment showed that all but one of the stocks were infected with potato virus X and/or potato virus S but in only five of the ten cultivars were all clones infected with the same virus or viruses. Field trials with the virus-free clones, which extended over four years, showed that one of the Norchip clones produced fewer tubers per plant than two other clones in three years of the four years, but no consistent differences in yield or specific gravity of tubers were found among the clones of any of the 10 cultivars.  相似文献

Huckleberry Gold is a purple-skin, yellow-flesh fresh market cultivar with similar culinary qualities to the market standard Yukon Gold. It has lower specific gravity, sucrose and vitamin C content, but a significantly higher level of tuber antioxidants than Yukon Gold. Notable disease resistant characteristics are Potato virus X resistance based on the presence of molecular markers for the PVX resistance genes, Nb and Rx1. In addition it also has the H1 gene present which confers resistance to the potato cyst nematode, Globodera rostochiensis, which has been confirmed by bioassay to pathotype Ro1. The size profile of Huckleberry Gold is smaller than Yukon Gold, allowing a better fit into specialty markets that are geared to smaller size for fresh use. Huckleberry Gold represents the first purple-skin, yellow-flesh cultivar to come from the Northwest (Tri-State) Potato Variety Development program.  相似文献

Mazama, an early maturing red-skinned cultivar for fresh market use, was jointly released in 2000 by the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Oregon, North Dakota, California, Idaho, and Washington. Mazama was tested in irrigated trials in Oregon from 1990 to 2000 and in the Western Regional Trial in 1994, 1995, and 1997. Mazama produces lower total yields than Dark Red Norland and Red LaSoda, but similar marketable yields with a high percentage of small, high-value tubers and significantly fewer culls. In 22 location-years of replicated Oregon and California trials, Mazama produced 40% and 26% higher marketable yields of U.S. #1s under 280 g than Red LaSoda and Dark Red Norland, respectively. In three years of replicated trials in six western states, Mazama produced 115% and 102% of marketable yields of U.S. #1s under 280 g compared with Red LaSoda and Dark Red Norland, respectively. Mazama tubers are smooth skinned and shallow eyed. Mazama’s bright red color does not fade in storage. Mazama is less susceptible to potato virus Y than Dark Red Norland or Red LaSoda.  相似文献

Red Pearl is a medium-late variety with round tubers of stable dark red skin and white flesh. It is an ideal gourmet and canning variety due to its high tuber set and high proportion of tubers less than 4.76 cm diameter (up to 71% of the total yield). Red Pearl has good boiling and baking qualities. Its specific gravity is slightly higher and the tuber dormancy is longer than Dark Red Norland. Red Pearl yields only 54% to 77% of Red Norland because of its small tuber size. Red Pearl is less susceptible to common scab (Streptomyces scabiae < than Dark Red Norland, significantly more resistant to corky ring spot (tobacco rattle virus) than Dark Red Norland and is resistant to bacterial wilt and brown rot (Ralstonia solanacearum). Red Pearl showed similar susceptibilities to several other diseases, including early blight, late blight, pink rot, and tuber soft rot, compared to Dark Red Norland. Red Pearl is more susceptible to shatter bruise and blackspot than Dark Red Norland when handled from storage at 7.2 C.  相似文献

Distribution of cortical, perimedullary, and pith tissues and total solids content were determined on both a fresh and a dry weight basis for six potato cultivars grown concurrently in three locations in California. At one location, tubers harvested 80 days from planting were 1.0 to 2.5% lower in total solids than tubers harvested at later dates. The high solids cortical tissues ranged from 39 to 51% of whole tubers on a dry basis, and the amount appeared to be related to tuber shape. White Rose and Red LaSoda showed greater difference in per cent total solids between cortical and perimedullary tissues than did Kennebec, Lenape,3 Norchip, and Russet Burbank. The high total solids of the cortical tissues is particularly significant to processing losses. Any method of peeling that removes one half the linear depth of the cortical tissues can result in a loss of 25% or more of total tuber solids, depending upon cultivar and tuber shape. Tuber development and distribution of total solids and other components were previously described for Red Pontiac, Russet Burbank, and White Rose tubers obtained from the retail market (6,9,10,11). It was particularly noted that the high-solids cortical tissues, although averaging only about 6mm in depth, comprised between 40 and 50% of both fresh and dry tuber weights (6,11). Because this sort of distribution of solids is especially significant to peeling loss, possible differences in solids among cultivars and at different harvest dates were investigated.  相似文献

Yellow-fleshed potatoes, Yukon Gold, Red Gold, Sag-maw Gold, Augsberg Gold, and AO82283.1 were compared to white-fleshed cultivars, Russet Burbank and Norchip, in relation to flesh color and sugar content during long-term storage. Yellow-fleshed cultivars had higher hue angles (h°) and chroma values (C*) compared to the white-fleshed potatoes. These values were consistently higher at all storage temperatures. Chroma values were maximum for most yellow-fleshed tubers when stored at 8.3 C for 84 days. As expected, lower concentrations of sucrose, glucose, and fructose were observed in tubers stored at 10 C compared to those stored at 3.3 and 8.3 C. After storage at either 3.3 or 8.3 C, Saginaw Gold, Augs-berg Gold, and AO82283.1 accumulated lower amounts of glucose or fructose compared to Norchip, Russet Burbank, Yukon Gold, and Red Gold. Although the yellow-fleshed clones accumulated up to 7.4 mg/g glucose or fructose when stored at 3.3 C, Saginaw Gold and Augsberg Gold responded well to reconditioning.  相似文献

Populations of the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulzer), and the potato aphid,Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), were observed on 27 named varieties of Irish potatoes in the Yakima Valley of Washington intermittently from 1947 through 1968. The Epicure, Great Scot, and B5141-6 varieties produced relatively fewer green peach aphids than other varieties tested; Bliss Triumph and Red Pontiac produced relatively fewer potato aphids. Except for Doebay Red, the red-skinned varieties, Bliss Triumph, Red McLure, Norland, and Earnly Rose, were extremely to moderately productive of the green peach aphid. No correlation was apparent between abundance of aphids and the specific gravity or yield of tubers.  相似文献

Manipulating seed physiological age is an effective method to alter tuber set and size distribution for many cultivars. However, cultivars Cal White, Red La Soda, Chieftain, Yukon Gold, and Satina were largely insensitive to high temperature-induced age-priming treatments. Gibberellins (GA) also have potential for altering tuber set and size development. When applied to cut seed of the five cultivars, GA hastened plant emergence, increased stem and tuber numbers per plant, and decreased average tuber size. The optimum concentration of GA for shifting tuber size distribution to maximize crop value without decreasing total yield depended on cultivar. Total yields decreased substantially in all cultivars with 10 mg L?1 GA but lower concentrations (0.5–4 mg L?1) either increased yields of Red La Soda, Yukon Gold, Chieftain and Satina by 11, 13, 15, and 24 %, respectively, or had no effect (Cal White). GA-induced increases in tubers per hectare ranged from zero (Cal White, Satina) to 36 % (Chieftain) and associated increases in yields of premium priced creamer size potatoes (C size; 10–66 g, 28–51 mm diameter) ranged from 0 to 140 %, depending on cultivar and length of the growing season. Increases in total crop values ranged from 7 to 30 % (Chieftain) with the optimum concentrations of GA, which also varied by cultivar. Effective use of GA to alter tuber size distribution for increased value depends on cultivar, concentration, and harvest timing.  相似文献

In Ontario its yield is similar to Russet Burbank’s. Plants are susceptible to virus Y and slightly susceptible to virus leafroll but are resistant to mild mosaic. Winema, an early maturing, red-skinned cultivar for fresh market use, was jointly released in 2000 by the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Oregon, North Dakota, California, Idaho, and Washington. Winema was evaluated in irrigated trials in Oregon and California from 1990 to 2000 and in the Western Regional Trial in 1995,1997, and 1998. Winema has produced lower total yields than Dark Red Norland and Red LaSoda at most locations, but similar or higher marketable yields and significantly fewer culls. In 20 location-years of replicated Oregon and California trials, Winema produced 108% and 99% of marketable yields of tubers under 280 g compared with Red LaSoda and Dark Red Norland, respectively. Similarly, in 23 location-years of The Western Regional Trial in 6 western states, Winema produced 109% and 92% of marketable yields of tubers under 280 g compared with Red LaSoda and Dark Red Norland, respectively. Winema tubers are smooth-skinned with shallow eyes. Winema’s bright red color does not fade appreciably in storage. Winema is susceptible to potato virus Y (PVY). Foliar symptoms of PVY are difficult to detect visually.  相似文献

Studies were performed to investigate factors affecting symptom expression of potato virus Y infection in three potato cultivars, Russet Norkotah, Shepody, and Red LaSoda. Quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results revealed few differences in the relative virus titer among cultivars tested. Potato virus Y (PVY) titers developed as rapidly in Russet Norkotah as in Shepody and Red LaSoda. Additional studies were performed to determine the effect of light intensity and infections of PVY and potato virus X (PVX), alone and in combination, on the expression of mosaic symptoms in these three cultivars. Low light intensity (270-330 uE/m2/sec) significantly increased plant heights and severity of mosaic disease among the cultivars compared to high light intensity (100-200 uE/m2/sec). PVX and PVY, as well as the combination of PVX and PVY in the same plant, decreased plant height compared to the uninoculated (healthy) controls. Low light intensity and dual infections of PVX and PVY significantly increased mosaic disease severity in Shepody and Red LaSoda, but not in Russet Norkotah. Results of these studies refute the suggestion that Russet Norkotah is resistant to PVY infection since virus titers in this cultivar are similar to the known susceptible cultivars Shepody and Red LaSoda. These results further suggest that while Russet Norkotah is fully susceptible to infection by PVY, it resists symptom expression.  相似文献

Two shade house and six field experiments were undertaken to evaluate fungicides and timing of application for the control of pink rot of potatoes caused byPhytophthora erythroseptica. Pink rot developed in up to 60% of tubers grown in artificially inoculated soil and 21% of the tubers in naturally infected soil. Ridomil (metalaxyl) and Ridomil Gold (mefenoxan) granules applied to the soil at planting completely or nearly completely controlled pink rot throughout the season in both pot and field experiments. Foliar applications of Ridomil Gold MZ (mefenoxan plus mancozeb) applied when tubers were around 20 mm diameter and another one or two sprays 12 to 28 days later also provided more than 80% control of pink rot in most experiments. Foliar applications of Shirlan (fluazanim) or Acrobat MZ (dimethomorph plus mancozeb) showed some activity against pink rot, but were significantly less effective than Ridomil Gold MZ. Foli-R-Fos 200 (phosphonic acid) or Dithane M45 (mancozeb) applied to the canopy showed little activity against pink rot in most experiments. Yield increases of between 6 and 17 tons ha?1 resulted from the application of either Ridomil granules at planting or two to three Ridomil Gold MZ foliar sprays around “tuber set.”  相似文献

Symptomatically distinct isolates of potato leaf roll virus were transmitted from White Rose to Russet Burbank potato by aphids and by grafting, from White Rose potato toP. floridana by aphids, and fromP. floridana toP. floridana by aphids. Isolates from White Rose potato generally produced stable and characteristic secondary leaf roll symptoms (but not primary leaf roll symptoms) when transmitted to Russet Burbank potato but variable symptoms when transmitted toP. floridana. Isolates from two of the latter plants with moderate and severe symptoms generally incited stable and characteristic symptoms when transmitted to otherP. floridana plants. The stable symptoms produced by each of these isolates were not modified by infestingP. floridana plants with varying numbers of viruliferous aphids. The results obtained in this study corroborate previous evidence for the existence of strains of potato leaf roll virus. It is suggested that certain White Rose potato plants contained mixtures of leaf roll virus strains. Furthermore, it is postulated that these mixtures were at least partially separated by “natural” selection following transmission toP. floridana. This mechanism provides an explanation for the stable symptoms produced by isolates transmitted fromP. floridana toP. floridana.  相似文献

Summary 23 potato cultivars were grown in fields infested with potato mop-top virus and spraing was assessed on tubers at harvest and after storage. Large differences in spraing susceptibility were found between cultivars. Compared with other countries, spraing in Denmark is characterised by a high incidence at harvest, a low increase during storage and a very low proportion of superficial spraing. Decrease in spraing during storage was recorded in two cultivars. DASELISA tests for PMTV in tubers revealted a high reliability. Mapping of PMTV in important Danish potato growing areas showed that the virus is widespread. Occurrence of spraing did not influence total yield or dry matter content. Soil acidity did not influence incidence of spraing but it was more common on coarse-grained soil than on finer sandy soils. PMTV in viruliferous resting spores ofSpongospora subterranea was inactivated by heating to 90°C for 15 minutes.  相似文献

Potato virus Y (PVY) is the most important virus in North American seed potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production. Planting virus-free minitubers in place of field-grown seed, which usually has a low PVY incidence, reduces initial PVY inoculum in the field. However, plants grown from minitubers are smaller and emerge later than those grown from conventional seed, which could make them more likely to become infected with PVY. We tested the effects of seed type of three potato cultivars (Dark Red Norland, Goldrush, and Red La Soda) on PVY incidence, tuber yield, and flowering time. The incidence of PVY in plants grown from minitubers did not differ from that of plants grown from conventional seed. Minituber-grown plants produced lower tuber yields than plants grown from conventional seed. Plants from minitubers also emerged and flowered later, but this did not increase their incidence of PVY. Cultivar-specific differences were observed in tuber yield and flowering times, suggesting that this variation may influence PVY incidence more than seed type.  相似文献
