Radiocarbon analysis of soil CO2 can provide information on the age, source and turnover rate of soil organic C. We developed a new method for passively trapping respired CO2 on molecular sieve, allowing it to be returned to the laboratory and recovered for C isotope analysis. We tested the method on a soil at a grassland site, and using a synthetic soil created to provide a contrasting isotopic signature. As with other passive sampling techniques, a small amount of fractionation of the 13C isotope occurs during sampling, which we have quantified, otherwise the results show that the molecular sieve traps a sufficiently large and representative sample of CO2 for C isotope analysis. Since 14C results are routinely corrected for mass-dependent fractionation, our results show that passive sampling of soil respiration using molecular sieve offers a reliable method to collect soil-respired CO2 for 14C analysis.  相似文献

Temperature fluctuations are a fundamental entity of the soil environment in the temperate zone and show fast (diurnal) and slow (seasonal) dynamics. Responses of soil respiration to temperature fluctuations were investigated in a root-free soil of a mid-European beech-oak forest. First, in laboratory we analysed the efflux of CO2 from soil microcosms exposed to seasonal (±5 °C of the annual mean) and diurnal fluctuations (±5 °C of the seasonal levels) in a two-factorial design. Second, in field microcosms we investigated effects of smoothing diurnal temperature fluctuations in soil (simulating a possible global trend) on CO2 efflux. Third, the natural temperature regime was simulated in laboratory microcosms and their CO2 efflux was compared to the one in the field. The experiments lasted for 1 year to differentiate seasonal and annual responses.Dynamics of CO2 efflux, microbial basal respiration, biomass and qO2 varied with seasonal temperature regime. However, in the laboratory the annual cumulative CO2-C production did not differ between treatments and varied between 10.9% and 11.7% of the total microcosm C, disregarding seasonal and/or diurnal fluctuations. The similarity of cumulative C production suggests that the availability of microbially mobilisable carbon pools rather than the temperature regime limited soil respiration. Diurnal fluctuations generally did not affect CO2 efflux and microbial activity, though winter Q10 values were increased in their absence. Simulation of the natural temperature regime in the laboratory resulted in CO2 efflux similar to field microcosms. In the field, rates of CO2 efflux and microbial activity, seasonal and annual cumulative CO2-C production were significantly higher at smoothed than at natural temperature conditions (annually 13.1% and 11.0% of total C was respired, respectively). Facing global climate changes the mechanisms regulating responses of soil respiration to temperature fluctuations need further investigation.

Soil respiration in forest plantations can be greatly affected by management practices. Irrigation is necessary for high productivity of poplar plantations in semi-arid northwest China. Moreover, plowing is essential for improving soil quality and reducing evaporation. In the present study, the influences of irrigation and plowing on soil carbon dioxide (CO2) efflux were investigated in poplar plantations in 2007 and 2008. The experiments included three stand age classes receiving three treatments: control, irrigation, and plowing. Mean soil respiration in irrigation treatment stands was 5.47, 4.86, and 4.43?µmol?m?2?s?1 in 3-, 8-, and 15-year-old stands, respectively, during the growing season. In contrast, mean soil respiration in control stands was 3.71, 3.83, and 3.98?µmol?m?2?s?1 in 3-, 8-, and 15-year-old stands, respectively. During the entire observation period, mean soil respiration in plowing treatment stands increased by 36.2% compared with that in the control stands. Mean soil respiration in irrigation treatment stands was significantly higher than that in the control stands; this was mainly because fine root growth and decomposer activities were greatly depressed by soil drought, since natural precipitation could not meet their water demands. The results also suggest that plowing management can greatly increase soil CO2 emission by modifying soil structure. After plowing, soil bulk density decreased and soil aeration was greatly improved, leading to greater rates of oxidation and mineralization.  相似文献

Grassland is one of the most important terrestrial ecosystems for carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling. However, while CO2 fixation by phototrophic bacteria is relatively well studied, little is known about microbial CO2 fixation without light by chemoautotrophic bacteria in grassland soils. Therefore, in this study, the isotope 14C-CO2 was used to investigate the CO2-fixing process in grassland soils. Soil samples were collected from both fenced and adjacent continuous grazing grassland sites in Inner Mongolia and then incubated for 120 days under dark conditions. Meanwhile, the cbbL genes (red- and green-like) were analyzed to isolate chemoautotrophic bacteria, which are responsible for CO2 fixation. After incubation, 14C was fixed into soil organic carbon (14C-SOC) and microbial biomass carbon (14C-MBC) were found in both the fenced and grazing soils, and the fixation rate of 14C-SOC in the fenced soils (48.55‰) was significantly higher than in the grazing soils (22.11‰). The fixation rate of 14C-MBC in the fenced soils (14.05‰) was higher than in the grazing soils (7.08‰), but the difference was not significant. The red-like cbbL genes could be detected in all the soil samples, but the green-like cbbL genes could not be amplified. A greater number of identified operational taxonomic units were observed in the fenced soils compared with the grazing soils. The chemoautotrophic bacteria were mainly affiliated with Alphaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria. However, Chloroflexi was detected in only the fenced soils. The results suggested that CO2 fixation by chemoautotrophic bacteria might be significant in carbon cycling in grassland.  相似文献

The mechanism of SO2 inhibition of photosynthesis in intact leaves of tomato and maze was studied to evaluate SO2 inhibition of photorespiration. Leaf tissues were fumigated with SO2 under photorespiratory (low CO, and/or high O, concentrations) and non-photo-respiratory conditions. When tomato leaf disks were fumigated with 10 ppm SO2 at 2, 21 and 100° o O., SO2 inhibited photosynthesis at 2% O2 in the same degrees as at 21% O2. SO2 inhibition of photosynthesis was depressed at higher CO2 concentrations when the disks were fumigated with SO2 at different CO2 concentrations. High CO2 concentrations also reduced the photosynthesis inhibition of maize leaf disks. These results suggest that SO2 inhibits photosynthesis through other mechanisms than photorespiration inhibition and confirm the view that SO2 competes with CO2 for the carboxylating enzymes in photosynthesis  相似文献

Fluctuations in atmospheric CO2 density can arise from static pressure fluctuations but their effect on the long-term eddy covariance (EC) CO2 flux measurement is poorly known. In this paper, we report the results of a 1-year direct measurement of the static pressure fluctuations and the velocity-pressure covariance over a mixed forest in Northeast China. The results show that the pressure-vertical velocity covariance was primarily controlled by friction velocity and air stability. Without the pressure correction, the open-path EC measurement of the nighttime ecosystem respiration was biased low and that of the daytime photosynthetic CO2 uptake was biased high. Over the 1-year measurement period, the cumulative pressure correction was 40 gCm−2, which was about 20% of the annual net ecosystem production of this forest. Using the friction velocity data found in the literature, we estimated the magnitudes of the pressure correction for the major ecosystem types in the long-term global EC network (FluxNet).  相似文献

The interactive effects of moisture and organic amendments (farmyard manure (FYM), crop residue (CR) and green manure (GM) (Sesbania aculeata) on gaseous carbon (C) emission, soil labile C fractions, enzymatic activities and microbial diversity in tropical, flooded rice soil were investigated. The amendments were applied on equal C basis in two moisture regimes, that is, aerobic and submergence conditions. The CO2 production was significantly higher by 22% in aerobic than in submergence condition; on the contrary, the CH4 production was 27% higher under submergence condition. The labile C fractions were significantly higher in GM by 26% under aerobic and 30% under submergence conditions, respectively, than control (without any kind of fertilizer or amendments). Eubacterial diversity identified by PCR-DGGE method (polymerase chain reaction coupled with denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis) was higher under GM followed by FYM, CR, and control and it is pronounced in submerged condition. GM favored the labile C accumulation and biological activities under both submergence and aerobic conditions, which makes it most active for soil–plant interactions compared to other organic amendments. Considering environmental sustainability, the use of GM is the better adoptable option, which could enhance labile C pools, microbial diversities in soil and keep soil biologically more active.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Climate change has a negative impact on crop production by inducing several stresses throughout plant growth. As the germination is one of the critical stages, this study was to assess the impact of elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) and associated temperature stress on germination of rice. The study was conducted using the rice genotype CO 51 in artificially induced eCO2 condition using open-top chamber (OTC). The efficiency of seed priming treatment with salicylic acid (SA), citric acid (CA), ascorbic acid (AsA) and distilled water (hydropriming) to alleviate stress due to eCO2 and temperature were also studied. SA 25 mg l?1 and AsA 100 mg l?1 enhanced germination, other seed quality parameters along with α- amylase activity. Also, the activity of antioxidant enzymes like catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase was increased. These parameters positively affected the germination and growth by mitigating the effect of oxidative stress induced under eCO2 conditions. So, SA, CA and AsA can be effectively used for maintaining seed quality parameters and seedling growth during the stresses.  相似文献

The response of wheat to elevated carbon dioxide concentration (e[CO2]) is likely to be dependent on nitrogen supply. To investigate the underlying mechanism of growth response to e[CO2], two wheat cultivars were grown under different carbon dioxide concentration [CO2] in a chamber experimental facility. The changes in leaf photosynthesis, C and N concentration, and biomass were investigated under different [CO2] and N supply. The result showed an increase in photosynthesis under e[CO2] at all N level except the one with the lowest N supply. Furthermore, a significant decrease in gs and Tr for both the cultivars was also observed under e[CO2] at all N levels. A considerable increase in WUEi was observed for both the cultivars under e[CO2] at all N levels except for the lowest concentration one. Therefore, the study shows that a stimulation of plant growth under e[CO2] to be marginal at higher N supply.  相似文献

We apply a high-resolution atmospheric model to assess the influence of mesoscale advection of CO2 on the estimation of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) using eddy-covariance CO2 flux measurements at a Fluxnet-Canada forest site located on sloping terrain on Vancouver Island, Canada. The numerical simulation is performed for fair-weather conditions over an idealized two-dimensional mountain bounded by water. The model is enhanced to include a CO2 budget with a treatment of canopy photosynthesis and soil respiration. The simulation captures the transport of CO2 by nocturnal drainage flows and weak land breezes. The resulting vertical profiles and time evolution of CO2 concentration show a significant variation near the ground, associated with stability changes in the atmospheric boundary layer. The simulated vertical CO2 gradients are found to be large around sunset and sunrise. The decrease of CO2 concentration over land after midnight and the CO2 accumulation over the neighboring water surface indicate CO2 advection.A CO2 budget analysis of the numerical-model output shows that the mean horizontal and vertical advection have significant fluctuations and opposite signs during daytime, with the net result that they largely counteract each other. At night, mean advection results in the underestimation by 20% of the nocturnal respiration. The estimated NEE at night is dominated by sub-grid-scale vertical flux in this simulation. Further evaluation using 3D simulations with higher resolution is needed to see if our results hold where vertical fluxes are much better resolved.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Rhizodeposition is an important component of carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, there remains tremendous uncertainty in its quantification due to the methodological limitations. In the present study, we propose a method to evaluate the rhizodeposition by plants by observing carbon flux. We investigated the ecosystem CO2 flux variability and calculated the rhizodeposition of carbon by the rice rhizosphere, by using the carbon flux, meteorological data, and biomass observation from 2003 to 2011 at the Taoyuan Agro-ecological Experimental Station, a representative subtropical paddy ecosystem. Our data indicated that the process of rhizodeposition is the major reason for the discrepancy between the biomass and net primary productivity of the paddy ecosystem under intensive human interference. Both the amount and ratio of rhizodeposition of carbon in this paddy ecosystem were assessed; this provides important theoretical and methodological support for further investigating rhizodeposition by rice under field conditions. The rhizodeposition amount in the growing season of early rice, late rice, and for the entire planting period was 0.52–2.56, 0.74–3.75, and 1.61–5.24 t ha?1, respectively, with the corresponding mean (±SD) rhizodeposition ratios of 23.16 ± 8.87%, 28.16 ± 12.94%, and 27.00 ± 9.3%. This method enabled us to calculate rhizodeposition under in situ conditions, and the results showed that the growing season of late rice was the primary period for rhizodeposition in rice ecosystem.  相似文献

We investigated the daily exchange of CO2 between undisturbed Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. forest and the atmosphere at a remote Siberian site during July and August of 1993. Our goal was to measure and partition total CO2 exchanges into aboveground and belowground components by measuring forest and understory eddy and storage fluxes and then to determine the relationships between the environmental factors and these observations of ecosystem metabolism. Maximum net CO2 uptake of the forest ecosystem was extremely low compared to the forests elsewhere, reaching a peak of only ∼5 μmol m−2 s−1 late in the morning. Net ecosystem CO2 uptake increased with increasing photosynthetically active photon flux density (PPFD) and decreased as the atmospheric water vapor saturation deficit (D) increased. Daytime ecosystem CO2 uptake increased immediately after rain and declined sharply after about six days of drought. Ecosystem respiration at night averaged ∼2.4 μmol m−2 s−1 with about 40% of this coming from the forest floor (roots and heterotrophs). The relationship between the understory eddy flux and soil temperature at 5 cm followed an Arrhenius model, increasing exponentially with temperature (Q10∼2.3) so that on hot summer afternoons the ecosystem became a source of CO2. Tree canopy CO2 exchange was calculated as the difference between above and below canopy eddy flux. Canopy uptake saturated at ∼6 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 for a PPFD above 500 μmol m−2 s−1 and decreased with increasing D. The optimal stomatal control model of Mäkelä et al. (1996) was used as a `big leaf' canopy model with parameter values determined by the non-linear least squares. The model accurately simulated the response of the forest to light, saturation deficit and drought. The precision of the model was such that the daily pattern of residuals between modeled and measured forest exchange reproduced the component storage flux. The model and independent leaf-level measurements suggest that the marginal water cost of plant C gain in Larix gmelinii is more similar to values from deciduous or desert species than other boreal forests. During the middle of the summer, the L. gmelinii forest ecosystem is generally a net sink for CO2, storing ∼0.75 g C m−2 d−1.  相似文献

Fixation of N by biological soil crusts and free-living heterotrophic soil microbes provides a significant proportion of ecosystem N in arid lands. To gain a better understanding of how elevated CO2 may affect N2-fixation in aridland ecosystems, we measured C2H2 reduction as a proxy for nitrogenase activity in biological soil crusts for 2 yr, and in soils either with or without dextrose-C additions for 1 yr, in an intact Mojave Desert ecosystem exposed to elevated CO2. We also measured crust and soil δ15N and total N to assess changes in N sources, and δ13C of crusts to determine a functional shift in crust species, with elevated CO2. The mean rate of C2H2 reduction by biological soil crusts was 76.9±5.6 μmol C2H4 m−2 h−1. There was no significant CO2 effect, but crusts from plant interspaces showed high variability in nitrogenase activity with elevated CO2. Additions of dextrose-C had a positive effect on rates of C2H2 reduction in soil. There was no elevated CO2 effect on soil nitrogenase activity. Plant cover affected soil response to C addition, with the largest response in plant interspaces. The mean rate of C2H2 reduction in soils either with or without C additions were 8.5±3.6 μmol C2H4 m−2 h−1 and 4.8±2.1 μmol m−2 h−1, respectively. Crust and soil δ15N and δ13C values were not affected by CO2 treatment, but did show an effect of cover type. Crust and soil samples in plant interspaces had the lowest values for both measurements. Analysis of soil and crust [N] and δ15N data with the Rayleigh distillation model suggests that any plant community changes with elevated CO2 and concomitant changes in litter composition likely will overwhelm any physiological changes in N2-fixation.  相似文献

Abstract

The study aimed at quantifying the rates of soil CO2 efflux under the influence of common tillage systems of moldboard plow (PT), chisel plow (CT), rotary tiller (RT), heavy disc harrow (DT), and no-tillage (NT) for 46 days in October and November in a field left fallow after wheat harvest located in southern Turkey. The NT and DT plots produced the lowest soil CO2 effluxes of 0.3 and 0.7 g m?2 h?1, respectively, relative to the other plots (P < 0.001). Following the highest rainfall amount of 87 mm on the tenth day after the tillage, soil CO2 efflux rates of all the plots peaked on the 12th day, with less influence on soil CO2 efflux in the NT plot than in the conventional tillage plots. Soil evaporation in NT (64 mmol m?2 s?1) was significantly lower than in the PT (85 mmol m?2 s?1) and RT (89 mmol m?2 s?1) tillage treatments (P < 0.01). The best multiple-regression model selected explained 46% of variation in soil respiration rates as a function of the tillage treatments, soil temperature, and soil evaporation (P < 0.001). The tillage systems of RT, PT, and CT led, on average, to 0.23, 0.22, and 0.18 g m?2 h?1 more soil CO2 efflux than the baseline of NT, respectively (P≤0.001).  相似文献

The leaching of nutrients from the plow layer by water percolation and their accumulation in the subsoil observed in a Japanese paddy field (Katoh et al. 2004: Soil Sci. Plant Nutr., 50, 721-729) were determined semi-quantitatively in a soil column experiment. Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Mn2+, Fe2+, and phosphate in percolating water from the plow layer soil column were retained in the subsoil columns that were connected to the plow layer soil column. Fe2+, K+, and phosphate accumulated in the uppermost part of the subsoil. Accumulation of Fe2+ in the uppermost part of the subsoil was presmnably due to the cation exchange process with concomitant desorption of Ca2+. In contrast, Ca2+ and Mg2+ in percolating water from the plow layer soil colmnn accumulated once in the subsoil, and translocated downwards slowly with successive water percolation. Considerable amounts of inorganic carbon (IC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in percolating water from the plow layer soil column were also retained in the subsoil columns. IC did not accumulate a gaseous form.  相似文献

Hierarchical Bayesian (HB) methods are useful tools for modeling multifaceted, nonlinear phenomena such as those encountered in ecology, and have been increasingly applied in environmental sciences, e.g., to estimate soil gas flux from different soil textures or sites. We have developed a model of soil carbon dioxide (CO2) flux based on soil temperature (T, 5 cm depth) and water-filled pore space (WFPS, 5 cm depth) using HB theory. The HB model was calibrated using a dataset of CO2 flux measured from bare soils belonging to four texture classes in 14 upland field sites in a watershed in central Hokkaido, Japan, in the nonsnow-cover season from 2003 to 2011. The numerical software HYDRUS-1D was used to simulate daily WFPS, and the estimated values were significantly correlated with the measured WFPS (R2 = 0.68, P < 0.001). Compared to a nonhierarchical Bayesian model (Bayesian pooled model), the CO2 predictions with the HB model more accurately represented texture-specific observations. The simulation–observation fit of the CO2 flux model was R2 = 0.64 (P < 0.001). More than 90% of the observed daily data were within the 95% confidence interval. The HB model exhibited high uncertainty for high CO2 flux values. The HB model calibration revealed differing sensitivity of CO2 flux to T and WFPS in different soil texture classes. CO2 flux increased with an increase in T, and it increased to a lesser degree with a finer texture, possibly because the clay and silt facilitated soil aggregation, thus reducing temperature fluctuations. WFPS values between 0.48 and 0.64 resulted in optimal conditions for CO2 flux. The minimum WFPS value increased with an increase in clay content (P < 0.05). Although only a small number of soil types were studied in only one season in this study, the HB model may provide a method for predicting how the effects of soil temperature and moisture on CO2 flux change with texture, and soil texture could be regarded as an upscaling factor in future research on regional extrapolation.  相似文献

Recently, large areas of tropical peatland have been converted into agricultural fields. To be used for agricultural activities, peat soils need to be drained, limed and fertilized due to excess water, low nutrient content and high acidity. Water depth and amelioration have significant effects on greenhouse gas (GHG) production. Twenty-seven soil samples were collected from Jabiren, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, in 2014 to examine the effect of water depth and amelioration on GHG emissions. Soil columns were formed in the peatland using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe with a diameter of 21 cm and a length of 100 cm. The PVC pipe was inserted vertically into the soil to a depth of 100 cm and carefully pulled up with the soil inside after sealing the bottom. The treatments consisting of three static water depths (15, 35 and 55 cm from the soil surface) and three ameliorants (without ameliorant/control, biochar+compost and steel slag+compost) were arranged using a randomized block design with two factors and three replications. Fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from the soil columns were measured weekly. There was a linear relationship between water depth and CO2 emissions. No significant difference was observed in the CH4 emissions in response to water depth and amelioration. The ameliorations influenced the CO2 and N2O emissions from the peat soil. The application of biochar+compost enhanced the CO2 and N2O emissions but reduced the CH4 emission. Moreover, the application of steel slag+compost increased the emissions of all three gases. The highest CO2 and N2O emissions occurred in response to the biochar+compost treatment followed by the steel slag-compost treatment and without ameliorant. Soil pH, redox potential (Eh) and temperature influenced the CO2, CH4 and N2O fluxes. Experiments for monitoring water depth and amelioration should be developed using peat soil as well as peat soil–crop systems.  相似文献

Summary A study was conducted to determine the effects of grinding, added N, and the absence of soil on C mineralization from agricultural plant residues with a high C:N ratio. The evolution of CO2 from ground and unground wheat straw, lentil straw, and lentil green manure, with C:N ratios of 80, 36, and 9, respectively, was determined over a period of 98 days. Treatments with added N were included with the wheat and lentil straw. Although the CO2 evolution was initially much faster from the lentil green manure than from the lentil or wheat straw, by 98 days similar amounts of CO2 had evolved from all residues incubated in soil with no added N. Incubation of plant residues in the absence of soil had little effect on CO2 evolution from the lentil green manure or lentil straw but strongly reduced CO2 evolution from the wheat straw. Grinding did not affect CO2 evolution from the lentil green manure but increased CO2 evolution from the lentil straw with no added N and from the wheat straw. The addition of N increased the rate of CO2 evolution from ground wheat straw between days 4 and 14 but not from unground wheat straw, and only slightly increased the rate of CO2 evolution from lentil straw during the initial decomposition. Over 98 days, the added N reduced the amounts of CO2 evolved from both lentil and wheat straw, due to reduced rates of CO2 evolution after ca. 17 days. The lack of an N response during the early stages of decomposition may be attributed to the low C:N ratio of the soluble straw component and to microbial adaptations to an N deficiency, while the inhibitory effect of N on CO2 evolution during the later stages of decomposition may be attributed to effects of high mineral N concentrations on lignocellulolytic microorganisms and enzymes.  相似文献
