OBJECTIVE: To determine association between exposure to Neospora caninum and milk production in dairy cows. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. Animals: 565 Holstein cows. PROCEDURE: Cows were classified as seropositive or seronegative to N. caninum within 7 days after calving by use of a kinetic ELISA. Milk production was compared between seropositive and seronegative cows. RESULTS: On the basis of 305-day mature equivalent milk production data, seropositive cows produced less milk (2.8 lb/cow per day) than did seronegative cows. In addition, analysis of results throughout the first 300 days of lactation revealed that after adjusting for effects of lactation number, calving season, clinical mastitis, and lameness, milk weight of seropositive cows was 2.5 lb/cow per day less than that of seronegative cows. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Exposure to N. caninum was associated with a 3 to 4% decrease in milk production. A decrease in milk production of 800 lb/cow for a typical 305-day lactation represents a loss of $128/cow.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between exposure to Neospora caninum and abortion in dairy cows during their first, second, third, and fourth or later lactations and to establish the main mode of transmission in female calves from birth until their first pregnancy was terminated by abortion or parturition. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. ANIMALS: 460 Holstein cows and 79 female calves. PROCEDURE: Cows were classified as seropositive or seronegative to N caninum within 7 days after calving; incidence of abortion was compared between groups during different lactations. Blood samples were collected from female calves before ingestion of colostrum and every 6 months until their first pregnancy was terminated by abortion or parturition; number of seropositive calves was compared between seropositive and seronegative dams. RESULTS: During the first pregnancy of their second lactation, risk of abortion for seropositive cows was 2.8 times that of seronegative cows. Among 10 calves born to seropositive cows, 4 were classified as seropositive at birth and thereafter. Among 69 calves born to seronegative cows, all were classified as seronegative at birth; 67 calves remained seronegative thereafter. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Exposure to N caninum alone was not significantly associated with abortion in cows during the first, third, and fourth or later lactations. Seropositive cows that have aborted previously may have subsequent abortions attributable to N caninum. Congenital infection was the main mode of N caninum transmission in a cohort of female calves.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine whether a commercially available ELISA could be used to examine bovine milk for antibodies against Neospora caninum. In an initial titration experiment, a milk dilution of 1:2 was found optimal to obtain milk results that were linearly correlated to those obtained with corresponding sera. This dilution was then used to examine 791 milk samples from N. caninum infected herds in the commercial ELISA. Milk results of individual animals were compared with those obtained by the same ELISA for the corresponding serum samples. The linear correlation between milk and serum antibody results of individual animals was characterized by R2 = 0.702. Multiple linear regression indicated that the later the stage of lactation at which an animal was sampled, the higher the milk ELISA result was as compared to the serum ELISA result. The examination of the two-graph receiver operating characteristics revealed an optimal cut-off of 0.261 to obtain similar results in the examination of milk and serum. With this cut-off, the test had a sensitivity and specificity relative to the serum results of 90%. The milk-based commercial ELISA classified more aborting dams as positive than the serum-based ELISA with this cut-off. The milk ELISA may be a valuable tool to assess the herd status with regard to abortion caused by N. caninum.  相似文献

A serological survey for antibodies against Neospora caninum in aborting cattle was carried out in the Czech Republic. Serum samples from 463 aborting dairy cows originated from 137 farms from different parts of the Czech Republic were tested for presence of N. caninum antibodies by use of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Antibodies (> or = 1:640) to N. caninum were found in 18 (3.9%) of 463 aborting cows. Farm prevalence in aborting cows was 12.4% (17/137). The antibody titres of cows were 1:200 (9 cows), 1:640 (7 cows), 1:1280 (3 cows), 1:2560 (3 cows), 1:5120 (3 cows), 1:10,240 (2 cows) and 1:20,480 (0 cow). A case-control study was conducted to estimate the association of N. caninum infection and abortion. For this 407 serum samples were collected from cows on five dairy farms with repeated occurrence of endemic and sporadic abortion of unidentified etiology. These samples were obtained from aborting cattle (n=44) and normally calving cattle (control group; n=363) and tested for N. caninum antibodies by an immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Overall, 3.19% (13/407) of cows sampled had positive N. caninum fluorescence with a cut-off titre of 1:200. The prevalence of N. caninum was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the aborting group (13.64%; 95% confidence interval (CI): 5.2, 27.4) than in the control group (1.93%; 95% CI: 0.8, 3.9). A strong association between seropositivity and abortion was found, with seropositive cows being eight times more likely to abort than seronegative cows (odds ratio=8; 95% CI: 2.6, 25.1). This first report on the serological prevalence of N. caninum in cows in the Czech Republic verified a strong association between N. caninum infection and abortions in five dairy farms. Thus, the neosporosis should be considered in differential diagnosis of bovine abortion.  相似文献

本研究用酶联免疫吸附试验(ELISA)对采集自北京地区的94份奶牛血清(随机采集)和河北地区的55份奶牛血清(有流产史奶牛),进行Neospora caninum血清抗体检测。结果发现,北京地区随机采集的奶牛血清N.caninum抗体阳性率为18.1%(17/94),河北地区有流产史的奶牛N.caninum血清抗体阳性率为23.6%(13/55)。采用牛奶记录体系(DHI)对北京地区17头N.caninum血清抗体阳性牛进行了日产奶量、乳中蛋白率和乳脂率的测定,并与同群牛中134头阴性牛比较。结果表明,N.caninum血清抗体阳性牛日产奶量比阴性牛降低9.7%,乳中蛋白率和乳脂率分别降低20%和15.4%。初步证明N.caninum血清抗体阳性奶牛产奶量降低及奶品质的下降。对不同N.caninum抗体滴度阳性牛的泌乳期主要生产性能比较发现,其生产性能的变化与抗体滴度无明显相关性。  相似文献

The relationship between the level of Neospora caninum antibodies in bulk milk and the seroprevalence in lactating cows was investigated. Bulk milk was also used to estimate the prevalence of N. caninum infection in dairy herds in the northeast and north Thailand. Bulk milk and individual serum from all lactating cows in 11 herds as well as 220 bulk milk samples from nine milk collection centres were analysed for presence of N. caninum antibodies using an iscom ELISA. In the 11 herds the bulk milk absorbances ranged between 0.04 and 0.89 and the seroprevalences varied between 0 and 46%. Five herds had milk absorbances below 0.20, among those were the two herds housing only seronegative lactating cows. In the remaining three herds with such low bulk milk absorbances one or two cows (5-14%) were seropositive. Six of the investigated herds had bulk milk absorbances above 0.20. In the two herds with the highest bulk milk absorbances more than 30% of the cows were seropositive. Using an absorbance of 0.20 to discriminate between negative and positive herds, 102 (46%) of 220 bulk milk samples were judged positive. There was no significant difference in mean bulk milk absorbance between the milk collection centres within each region. However, the proportion of herds with bulk milk absorbances > or =0.50 in the north was statistically (P < 0.01) higher than that in the northeast. It was concluded that bulk milk antibody testing can be used to identify N. caninum-infected herds and that N. caninum is a common infection in dairy herds in Thailand.  相似文献

The study evaluated the use of the Mastazyme ELISA for quantification of Neospora caninum (N. caninum) specific IgG in bovine milk and examined the relationship between serum and milk antibodies in two dairy herds. The serum and milk antibodies both had bimodal distributions in each herd. This was mainly due to between cow variation: in both herds, approximately two thirds of cows were either clearly and consistently seropositive or seronegative for N. caninum with one third consistently near the threshold. Milk and serum N. caninum IgG were strongly related. This relationship was modelled using a linear mixed model including a polynomial term for serum, the effect of herd, and between and within cow variance components. The latter gave a significantly better fit to the data than a model that allowed for a different relationship for the positive and negative (according to the serum test) groups of observations. The sensitivity and specificity (based on serum percentage positivity (pp)) of the milk antibody was determined for different milk pp thresholds. In spite of the differences between the relationship of milk to serum seen for the two herds, for those estimates with sufficient precision, sensitivity and specificity greater than 0.73 for both herds were obtained using single thresholds of 14 and 15.5 for milk pp in both herds based on, as our gold standard, serum antibody pp thresholds of 22.5 and 25, respectively. If milk antibody is to be used for detecting persistently infected cows, the higher threshold of 15.5 may be suitable while for epidemiological screening 14 would be preferable. Further validation in a greater number of herds is required, but our results suggest that this test may prove to be a useful adjunct to serum N. caninum IgG assays in the monitoring of N. caninum infection as part of herd health programmes and epidemiological studies.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the effect of calcium supplementation of dairy cattle after calving on serum concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous after calving, and on reproductive and productive performance in the following lactation. METHODS: This was a double-blind randomised clinical trial using 356 dairy cows of parity 3 or greater from six seasonally calving commercial dairy herds. Cows were randomly assigned to a treatment and control group. The treatment group received two doses of 380 ml of calcium chloride in oil (49 g of elemental calcium); the first dose was given as soon as practical after calving and the second 12 hours later. Control cows received 380 ml of a placebo using the same treatment regime. Treatment and control cows had blood samples taken during the first 7 days after calving to determine serum calcium, magnesium and phosphorous levels. Treatment and control cows were monitored throughout the lactation to measure production and reproductive performance. RESULTS: Treatment had no effect on PSM to first service intervals. Treatment significantly reduced PSM to conception intervals in only one of the four herds with data available for analysis (p = 0.09). There was no difference between treatment groups for adjusted corrected milk yield calculated from the first herd test milk yield (p = 0.93) or 305-day milk solids production (p = 0.19). CONCLUSION: Further studies are required to identify reasons for the between-herd effectiveness of calcium chloride treatment in improving fertility.  相似文献

A newly developed milk dot blot test was used to detect anti-bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) antibody in milk samples from 2079 lactating adult cows from among 61 herds. The milk dot blot test was highly repeatable; the concordance rate, compared with the agar gel immunodiffusion test performed on serum, was 83.5%. All herds contained BLV-positive cows; the prevalence rate was 36%. BLV-positive cows tended to come from larger herds and were older and more often later in lactation. Fourteen production and related variables (herd size, age, days open, days in milk, milk somatic cell count, milk, fat, and protein produced in the current lactation, projected production of milk, fat, and protein, and breed class average deviations for milk, fat, and protein) were compared between BLV-positive and BLV-negative cows. Although somatic cell count, milk produced, and projected production of milk and protein were related significantly to BLV status using simple tests of association, once the variables herd size, age and days in milk were controlled, these differences were removed. Further analyses using logistic (outcome: individual cow BLV status) and least-squares regression (outcome:herd proportion of BLV-positive cows) failed to show an association between any of the measured production or related variables and BLV-positivity. We investigated the effect of parity number on the dry matter intake (DMI) of cows during the first week after calving. Eighty‐three cows were evaluated from 14 days before to 7 days after calving. DMI and milk yield were measured for 7 days after calving, and the calving score was measured. Blood samples were collected throughout the experiment. The average DMI during the first week after calving was reduced in the first‐lactation heifers and high‐parity number cows. A quadratic relationship between the parity number and the DMI was observed. The first‐lactation heifers had lower prepartum serum total protein (TP) concentration and milk yield, higher prepartum serum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentration and calving score than the multiparous cows. The recovery rate of serum calcium (Ca) after calving was slow in the cows in the parity 6. The DMI was positively affected by the serum Ca concentration after calving, milk yield, and prepartum serum TP concentration and was negatively affected by the calving score and prepartum serum NEFA concentration. We conclude that the DMI immediately after calving tends to be lower in first‐lactation heifers and high‐parity number cows, but factors that reduce the DMI differ according to parity number.  相似文献

A comprehensive field study was carried out with the following objectives: (a) to assess the usefulness of individual and bulk tank milk analysis for determining Neospora caninum serostatus in individual cows and herds, and (b) to study the associations between N. caninum infection status (based on milk testing), and several productive and reproductive parameters in the animals. Antibodies were detected with a commercially available ELISA test (Bio K 192/5). Analysis of paired serum and milk samples from 1134 lactating cows on 38 farms revealed that 97.6% of the ELISA results were coincident, irrespective of whether serum or milk samples were used. Moreover, multiple linear regression analysis revealed that 86.0% of the variations in ELISA values in milk were due to variations in the serum. The measurement of antibodies in bulk tank milk was a good estimator of the herd level status of N. caninum infection, and enabled detection of infection in 94.7% herds with ≥10.0% seropositive cows and/or in all herds with >4% highly seropositive cows. The odds ratio for abortion in seropositive animals was 9.1 times higher than in seronegative animals. The infection serostatus was also a significant risk factor, as the odds ratio for abortion was even higher (12.0 times) in cows categorized as highly seropositive. ELISA values for the bulk milk from 387 randomly selected herds were negatively associated with average milk production. Moreover, milk production losses mainly occurred on farms categorized as highly positive (i.e. herds with ≥20.0% seropositive cows).  相似文献

Streptococcus uberis is an important environmental mastitis pathogen that causes subclinical and clinical mastitis in lactating and nonlactating cows and heifers throughout the world. Previous work from our laboratory suggests that S. uberis adhesion molecule (SUAM) is involved in S. uberis pathogenesis and may be an excellent target for vaccine development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibody response of cattle vaccinated with recombinant SUAM (rSUAM). Uninfected primiparous dairy cows (n=30) in late lactation were divided randomly into three groups of 10 cows each: control, 200 μg rSUAM, and 400 μg rSUAM. Cows in groups vaccinated with 200 μg and 400 μg rSUAM received an emulsion containing adjuvant, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and affinity purified rSUAM. Cows in the control group received an emulsion containing adjuvant and PBS. Cows were vaccinated subcutaneously in the neck region at drying off (D-0), 28 d after drying off (D+28) and within 7 d after calving. Serum was collected at D-0, D+28, at calving (C-0), calving vaccination (CV), and during early lactation (CV+14). Serum antibody responses were measured by an ELISA against rSUAM. Following the first vaccination a significant increase in anti-rSUAM antibodies was detected at D+28 in cows from groups vaccinated with 200 μg and 400 μg rSUAM when compared to the control group. This increase in anti-rSUAM antibodies continued following the second immunization at D+28; reaching the highest levels in the post-parturient sampling period (C0), after which antibodies appeared to plateau. S. uberis UT888 pretreated with several dilutions of heat-inactivated serum from cows vaccinated with rSUAM, affinity purified antibodies against rSUAM, and to a 17 amino acid long peptide from the N terminus of SUAM (pep-SUAM) were co-cultured with bovine mammary epithelial cells and adherence to and internalization of S. uberis into epithelial cells was measured. Compared to untreated controls, opsonization of two strains of S. uberis with sera from cows vaccinated with rSUAM, with affinity purified rSUAM antibodies, or with affinity purified pep-SUAM antibodies significantly reduced adherence to and internalization of this pathogen into bovine mammary epithelial cells. In conclusion, subcutaneous vaccination of dairy cows with rSUAM during physiological transitions of the mammary gland either from or to a state of active milk synthesis induced antibodies in serum and milk and these antibodies reduced adherence to and internalization of S. uberis into mammary epithelial cells under in vitro conditions. SUAM appears to be an excellent candidate for vaccine development.  相似文献

A nested PCR that successfully detected Neospora caninum DNA in serum of cattle was used for investigation of selected abortion cases and in a study of healthy pregnant cows at an abattoir. N. caninum DNA was not detected in serum from antibody positive dams that aborted due to N. caninum, but was present in serum of some antibody negative dams that aborted due to other causes. N. caninum DNA was also found in the serum of about half of the animals that aborted of undetermined cause, but was not detected in cow sera from two beef cattle herds in Western Australia with no recent history of abortion. In the abattoir study of 79 dams and their foetuses N. caninum DNA was found in serum of 3 dams and in material from 11 foetuses. The majority of the cows and all foetuses were antibody negative. Our findings suggest that there is no obvious relationship between the presence or absence of N. caninum DNA in serum and the presence of antibodies to N. caninum in dams, the presence of N. caninum DNA in foetuses or abortion due to N. caninum. This is the first report of the detection of N. caninum DNA in serum of cattle rather than the white blood cell fraction. It indicates the presence of free tachyzoites and/or parasite DNA in circulation. The results suggest that persistent infection in the absence of antibodies is a possible outcome of N. caninum infection. Infection of foetuses in the absence of antibodies supports the possibility of persistent infection due to immunotolerance to an early in utero infection. It is therefore important to test for N. caninum DNA as well as antibodies for the detection of exposed and/or infected animals. However, the presence or absence of N. caninum antibodies or DNA did not support nor exclude N. caninum as the cause of abortion. Additional criteria are required for a positive diagnosis of abortion caused by N. caninum.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to record how the antibody levels change over time during pregnancy in dairy cows naturally infected with the protozoan parasite Neospora caninum, and relate this to the reproductive performance. Eighteen cows with antibodies to N. caninum were serum sampled monthly during their first pregnancy and 13 of them were also followed for a second pregnancy. In all, five pregnancies ended in abortion and two in stillbirth. Antibodies to N. caninum in serum were demonstrated by immune stimulating complex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iscom ELISA). The N. caninum antibody titres remained well above the 1:100 cut-off limit for the test used during 2 years in all cows. In the non-aborting cows, mean values of antibody titres to N. caninum rose 1.5-2.5 dilution steps to reach a plateau 4-5 months before parturition, and thereafter decreased from 2 months before parturition. These changes were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The same pattern was seen in the aborting cows. The consistent pattern of rise in antibody titres observed during both pregnancies in all cows indicated a reactivation rather than a reinfection of the parasite at mid-gestation.  相似文献

Forty-six aborted bovine fetuses submitted to the Faculty of Veterinary, Department of Clinical Pathology, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, were examined histopathologically. Non-suppurative inflammation was observed mainly in the brain and heart of 22 fetuses. Brain lesions consisted primarily of mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltrates with occasional foci of necrosis. Protozoa that reacted with Neospora caninum antisera were seen in 18 of the 22 (81.8%) brain specimens from fetuses with encephalitis. Blood samples collected from 223 Holstein cows on five dairy herds were tested for N. caninum antibodies by an immunofluorescent antibody technique. These samples were obtained from aborting cattle and normally calving cattle (control group). Overall, 11.2% of cows sampled had N. caninum antibodies at a dilution of 1:200. Seroprevalence was higher (P = 0.0053) in aborting (23.3%) than in non-aborting cows (8.3%). Association between seropositivity to N. caninum and abortion was found, with seropositive cows being 3.3 times more likely to abort than seronegative cows (OR = 3.33; 95% CI: 1.38, 8.062). Additionally, N. caninum antibodies were detected in sera from seven cows that had aborted fetuses with lesions suggestive of protozoal infection. These results suggest that N. caninum is an important cause of abortion in dairy cattle in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.  相似文献

This present study, was designed to establish whether Neospora caninum infection affects the fertility of high-producing dairy cows, and was based on yearly serological screening for neosporosis and on the confirmation of N. caninum infection in aborted foetuses. Assessment was made of 7518 artificial inseminations (AI) (applied to parous cows) performed in three herds. Of these inseminations, 2540 (33.8%) resulted in pregnancy; 34% of which corresponded to seronegative cows (2226 of 6556 AI performed in seronegative cows) and 32.6% to seropositive animals (314 of 962). Abortion occurred in 97 (30.1%) of the 314 pregnancies recorded in dams seropositive for N. caninum, while only 93 (4.2%) of the 2226 pregnancies in seronegative animals ended in abortion. Logistic regression analysis indicated no significant effects of N. caninum antibody titre, days in milk and milk production at insemination on fertility. Factors found to affect fertility were herd, season of insemination, lactation and insemination number, semen-providing bull and AI technician. Our results indicate that N. caninum infection does not affect the fertility of high-producing dairy cows.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the performance characteristics of an Institut Pourquier (IP) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of antibodies against Neospora caninum in bovine milk and subsequent determination of the prevalence of N. caninum infection in New South Wales (NSW) dairy cattle. METHODS: Matching serum and milk samples from 93 cattle were assayed in two commercially available ELISAs for the detection of anti-N. caninum antibodies. Serum test results of one ELISA (IDEXX) were used to determine the N. caninum infection status of the cattle. Optimised cut-off values for the IP ELISA using milk samples were determined by two-graph receiver operating characteristic (TG-ROC) analysis and then applied to a representative sample of 398 milk samples from dairy herds around NSW. RESULTS: When this ELISA was applied to a representative collection of 398 milk samples from dairy cattle across NSW it demonstrated a 21.1% prevalence of N. caninum infection in those cattle. From the TG-ROC analysis an IP ELISA protocol was derived which suggested a cut-off threshold that would allow milk testing with 97% sensitivity and specificity, respectively, relative to serum testing. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of N. caninum in NSW dairy cattle was higher than previously believed. When used on individual milk samples this ELISA demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity and so could be used to accurately identify N. caninum infection. TG-ROC analysis of the IP ELISA optimised the protocol and prescribed cut-off values enabling the ELISA to be used for the screening of N. caninum antibodies in the milk of dairy cattle.  相似文献

During the early postpartum period dairy cows mobilize fat and muscle to support lactation. This is associated with alterations in blood metabolite and hormone profiles which in turn influence milk yield and fertility. This study developed models to determine how metabolic traits, milk yield and body condition score were inter-related at different times in the periparturient period and to compare these relationships in primiparous (PP, n=188) and multiparous (MP, n=312) cows. Data from four previous studies which included information on blood metabolic parameters, parity, milk yield, body condition score and diet were collated into a single dataset. Coefficients of polynomial equations were calculated for each trait between -1 week pre-calving and week +7 postpartum using residual maximum likelihood modelling. The completed dataset was used in a multiple correlation model to determine how the best fit curves were related to each other over time. PP cows had higher concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I and lower beta-hydroxybutyrate concentrations throughout, higher leptin concentrations pre-partum and both the peak in non-esterified fatty acids and the nadir in urea concentration occurred earlier after calving. These differences were associated with significantly lower milk production. Leptin concentrations fell at calving and were related to body condition score. Insulin was negatively correlated with yield in MP cows only. In MP cows the relationship between insulin-like growth factor-I and yield switched from negative to positive between weeks +4 and +7. Both beta-hydroxybutyrate and urea were positively related to yield in PP cows. In contrast, in MP cows beta-hydroxybutyrate was negatively correlated with yield and urea was strongly related to body condition score but not yield. This study evaluated the use of bulk milk as a diagnostic tool for estimation of herd-level Neospora caninum exposure in Atlantic Canada; it was used to estimate the prevalence of dairy farms with a within-herd N. caninum-seroprevalence > or = 15% in Prince Edward Island (PEI). The variation over time of N. caninum antibodies in bulk milk is also reported. Skimmed bulk milk and individual serum samples were analyzed for N. caninum antibodies by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Bulk milk samples were collected in May 2004 (n = 235), May 2005 (n = 189), and June 2005 (n = 235). The prevalence of dairy farms with a within-herd seroprevalence > or = 15% on PEI was 6.4% in May 2004. In May and June 2005, respectively, 10.1% and 10.2% of farms had a > or = 15% within-herd seroprevalence. In 11 farms that were considered positive based on bulk milk samples, blood samples were collected from all adult cows in September 2005, in conjunction with a 4th bulk milk sample on the same day. The correlation coefficient between serology and bulk milk ELISA was 0.87. The results of this study demonstrate that the prevalence of N. caninum in dairy farms can be estimated by using a bulk milk ELISA.  相似文献

Bovine neosporosis is a parasitic disease produced by Neospora caninum that induces abortion in cows, and consequently has a negative impact on the herd's reproductive efficiency. The main objective of this research was to determine the serological evidence of N. caninum in cattle herds from Venezuela using an indirect antibody capture ELISA test. Four hundred and fifty-nine (459) serum samples from crossbred adult cows were collected to be tested for Neospora antibodies. The sampled cows came from 15 large farms located in eight important cattle states that have predominant dual-purpose production systems (cattle from these farms are used for both milk and meat production). Fifty-two cows (11.3%) were seropositive to N. Caninum. Thirteen (86.7%) of 15 studied herds had cows seropositive to N. caninum. The average within-herd seroprevalence was 11.5% (range 3.8-36.7%). Cows that aborted in some of these farms had 2.71 (P: 0.009) greater odds to be seropositive when compared to cows that did not abort. Each one of the eight states represented in our study had seropositive animals. These results are the first evidence of exposure to N. caninum in Venezuelan cattle herds, indicating the possible circulation of this pathogen in the country. Further epidemiological studies should be granted to determine the spread of the disease in the Venezuelan cattle industry and its associated risk factors.  相似文献
