Summary

The content and changes in flavedo soluble sugars of Citrus limon (L.) Burm. F. of different maturity derived from coastal and desert climatic regions to two postharvest conditioning temperatures of 158C and 108C were determined. Conditioning caused significant changes of flavedo soluble sugars in lemons of the two geographic areas. Raffinose level increased with duration of conditioning in both desert and coastal lemons and was slightly higher at 108C than at 158C conditioning. The flavedo sucrose content of green coastal lemons was greater than silver or yellow lemons and increased significantly in silver and yellow lemons after conditioning for 3 d at 158Cor108C, but declined significantly in all maturity classes to a low level with conditioning of more than 3 d. In contrast, the flavedo sucrose content of green and yellow desert lemons was 2.8–fold and 1.7–fold greater, respectively, than comparable coastal lemon flavedo, with the green lemon flavedo showing a significant gradual decrease with increasing duration of conditioning at 158C and 108C, but not in yellow lemon flavedo. The flavedo glucose and fructose contents of desert lemons remained relatively unchanged with conditioning at 158C and 108C, but their contents in yellow, silver and green coastal lemon flavedo increased after prolonged conditioning. The flavedo fructose content of yellow coastal lemons was significantly greater than green lemons, but there was no difference in flavedo fructose content of green and yellow desert lemons. The observed alteration of flavedo soluble sugars associated with conditioning provided an insight of cellular response to temperature, and emphasized the importance of climatic origin on lemon flavedo sugar composition.  相似文献

Mango fruit has high nutritional values, nice flavor, taste, etc. and hence is known as king of fruits. However, it faces number of challenges such as attack of microorganisms, having short shelf life, mismanagement during transportation and storage. Therefore, two varieties of Pakistani mango fruits namely, Langra and Sammar Bahisht Chaunsa, were harvested and endeavored to prolong the shelf life while keeping the quality up to the requirement. For the purpose, the mango fruit was harvested at hard green stage of maturity; it was cleaned and subjected to analysis for different parameters. The rest of the fruit was kept in water and/or in air, maintained at 15 °C, for different time periods and stored at 30 °C till ripening. The fruit was analyzed for different parameters at the time when the control was ripened and at the ripening stage of each sample. The results obtained were correlated with/the heat removed during the pre-storage treatment and was observed that the impact of these treatments upon the quality and shelf life of the fruit was significantly under the limit P ≤ 0.05. It was also observed that the heat removed as per treatment T2 enhanced the quality of the fruit and prolonged the shelf life more than others.  相似文献

The influence of seed maturity, seed storage and germination pre-treatments on seed germination of cleome (Cleome gynandra L.) were investigated. Seed maturation studies showed that capsules harvested at 18 days after anthesis possessed the highest dry weight with 19.2% moisture and 1% germination. Development of fresh-ungerminated seed was observed with increasing maturity of fruit, suggesting that cleome exhibited forms of seed dormancy. Storing mature seed at 15 °C and at room temperature for 5 months showed that seed dormancy was broken after 3 months under both storage regimes. When mature seeds were subjected to different treatments including various levels of GA3, KNO3, leaching, pre-chilling, soaking and pre-heating at different temperatures, it was found that pre-heating at 40 °C for period of 1–5 days was the most effective method in breaking dormancy in cleome.  相似文献

The effects of temperature and ethylene on the quality of snapdragon flowers (Antirrhinum majus L. cvs. ‘Potomac Pink’ and ‘Rocket’) after harvest were investigated. The flowers were stored dry or wet at 6 temperatures ranging from 0 to 12.5 °C for 5 days. Vase life and gravitropic bending were measured at 20 °C after storage. Respiration rates of flowers at 8 different temperatures (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15 and 20 °C) were measured continually using a computerized system. The respiration of cut snapdragon flowers increased exponentially as the temperature increased from 0 to 20 °C, with a mean Q10 of 2.6. The vase life of flowers of the ‘Potomac Pink’ cultivar stored dry at 0 °C was 10.8 days, similar to that of freshly harvested controls (10.6 days), and 4.4 days longer than that of flowers stored at 7.5 °C. When spikes were placed horizontally at 20 °C, growth became negatively gravitropic within 20 min. Bending was significantly higher than controls (stored vertically) in all flowers stored horizontally at temperatures above 5 °C. Vase life of flowers stored for 5 days at a range of temperatures then placed in an interior environment was directly correlated with respiration rate at the storage temperature. Wet storage of cut snapdragon flowers reduced the loss of quality at storage temperatures above 5 °C but the vase life of flowers stored in water at 12.5 °C was less than half that of flowers stored dry at 0 °C. Ethylene treatment caused 100% floret abscission which was prevented by pre-treatment either with 1-methycyclopropene (1-MCP) or with silver thiosulfate (STS), but neither of these inhibitors prevented gravitropic bending.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of leaf pruning intensities at flowering on the green and yellow life and fruit quality of bananas (Musa AAA, cv. Grande Naine). The fruit from banana plants that retained 7, 9, 11 and 13 leaves after pruning were packed in carton boxes of 13.7 kg and stored in a cold room at 14 °C for 21 days to simulate transportation conditions. During this period, eight visual evaluations of fruit peel colour were made. Next, fruits were induced to commercial ripening using ethylene at 100 μl/ml. Four evaluations (every 2 days) on fruit firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, fruit weight and peel colour were made to assess fruit yellow life. No interaction between evaluations and number of leaves retained was found for pulp firmness, soluble solid percentage, fruit acidity, fruit weight and maturation grade. The fruit green life and peel colour was similar for plants retaining different number of leaves. After the application of ethylene, there were no differences in fruit firmness (P > 0.62), percentage of soluble solids (P > 0.24) nor in the percentage of acidity (P > 0.32). No difference in fruit weight (P > 0.07) and ripening grade (P > 0.17) were observed among plants retaining different number of leaves. The results suggest that in tropical commercial banana plantations, producing for international markets, it is possible to defoliate the banana plants to seven leaves at flowering without causing a reduction on the green and yellow life and quality of fruit.  相似文献

‘Pájaro’ strawberry fruit were treated at 45 °C by hot air or hot water prior to storage at 3 °C for 10 days. Control fruit were stored without treatment. Modifications in cell wall composition and fruit quality caused by heat treatment were assessed after removal of fruit from storage. Treatment with hot water improved fruit resistance to fungal infection, but caused external damage, which rendered fruit commercially unacceptable. Hot air treatment did not affect external appearance, improved resistance to fungal infection and preserved firmness. Heat treatments did not affect cell wall yields obtained, but caused alterations in solubility of the different cell wall polysaccharide fractions. Higher yields for CDTA- and KOH-soluble fractions were observed as a consequence of treatment, suggesting decreased solubilization of cell wall polymers in treated fruit, even though no apparent relationship to fruit firmness was found. Higher degrees of esterification as well as total sugar contents in both CDTA- and KOH-soluble fractions were also found in heated fruit.  相似文献

White and purple garlic is harvested in the Bajio region of Mexico from February to August and then stored at room temperature. A complete study of quality changes under different conditions and how these conditions interact to determine the shelf life of the product has been lacking, nor have objective parameters to predict shelf life been determined. Six batches of 360 bulbs of garlic (Allium sativum L.) cv. Perla were stored for 190 days at 0 °C, 0 °C and 70% relative humidity (RH), 5, 20, 30 °C, and at room temperature (RT) (17.7 ± 7 °C). The weight loss, subjective firmness of the bulbs, clove penetration resistance, hue value, internal sprouting index, soluble solids and dry matter content of the cloves were recorded periodically. The weight loss and internal sprouting index had a negative correlation on the subjective firmness, penetration resistance, and hue of the cloves. Storage at 5 °C, 20 °C, and RT induced sprouting, and subsequent growth had an effect on a loss of firmness and color. Complete sprouting (>100%) induced a weight loss of 9–11% at these temperatures. In order to maintain an adequate safety margin for marketing, we propose an internal sprouting index of 50% to determining the effective shelf life of garlic cv. ‘Perla’. In accordance with this criterion and in conditions studying, shelf life at 0 °C was 155 days; at 5 °C and RT it was 80 days; and at 20 °C it was 60 days. These results lead us to conclude that it is possible to estimate the shelf life of garlic using the internal sprouting index.  相似文献

The effect of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) on internal browning (IB) and keeping quality of early maturing European pears cv ‘Camusina di Genova’ and ‘Camusina di Bonarcado’ was examined over 10 days of storage at 18 °C. AVG was applied at 125 or 250 mg/L 2 weeks before harvest. At harvest fruit treated with AVG was less ripe than control fruit, being significantly firmer and experiencing lower values of maturity stage (based on ground color), maturity index (calculated value) and IB, depending on the AVG dose and cultivar. During storage, there was no treatment-dependent difference in titratable acidity and total soluble solids of juice, while both treatments reduced ethylene and respiration rates, delayed the ripening process and lowered the incidence of IB and the loss of firmness, especially when applied at 250 mg/L. In addition, AVG treatment significantly reduced decay development in both cultivars, mainly when it was applied at 250 mg/L. This effect was related to the delay of ripen and to possible inhibition of ethylene production by the pathogens and/or infected tissues.  相似文献

Summary

‘Fuerte’ avocado fruits from five harvest dates, which spanned the normal packing season, were infused with different amounts of ABA from zero to 550 ng per gram fresh mass of fruit. After ripening at 21°C, the fruits were analysed for PPO activity and residual ABA. Both ABA and harvest date affected PPO activity, with the greater effect being time of harvest. The later the harvest date and the higher the level of infused ABA, the greater was the effect on PPO activity. Early in the season the infused ABA had no effect upon PPO activity. This study has shown that ‘Fuerte’ fruit with the best potential for long distance transport are those harvested soon after minimum legal maturity. If fruits must be hung (tree stored) after maturity, they should be stressed as little as possible.  相似文献

The post-harvest internal browning (IB) and quality in pineapple (Ananas comosus L. ‘Comte de Paris’) fruit were studied in relation to pre-harvest salicylic acid (SA) spray (PSS) or/and post-harvest salicylic acid immersion (PSI) treatments at 10 °C for up to 20 days plus 2 days at 20 °C (shelf-life). In addition, the activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) were measured during cold storage. The results showed that all SA treatments significantly reduced IB incidence and intensity. Furthermore, SA did not affect soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA) and total phenolics (TP) content, but delayed the decline of ascorbic acid (AsA) content. At the same time, SA significantly inhibited PPO and PAL activities. The study indicated the beneficial effect of SA by pre-harvest spray and/or post-harvest immersion on pineapple fruit quality and resistance to IB, and PSS + PSI treatment showed the best effect.  相似文献

High temperatures are known to reduce fruit size and fruit weight in strawberry, but cultivar differences in the response to high temperature stress during the reproductive stage up to the second inflorescence have not been sufficiently reported. We examined the effect of two day/night temperature regimes on fruit set and fruit growth in two cultivars, ‘Nyoho’ and ‘Toyonoka’. A high day/night temperature of 30/25 °C reduced the number of inflorescences, flowers, and fruits in both cultivars compared with plants grown at 23/18 °C. The percentage of fruit set in ‘Nyoho’ was not significantly different between the two temperature treatments, while that in ‘Toyonoka’ was much lower at 30/25 °C than at 23/18 °C. Days to ripening was shorter at 30/25 °C than at 23/18 °C, and no cultivar differences were observed. Fresh weight of primary, secondary, and tertiary fruits was greater at 23/18 °C than at 30/25 °C in both cultivars, and no cultivar differences were observed, except in tertiary fruits. The diameter of fruits from all positions was also reduced at 30/25 °C in both cultivars. Relative growth rates of fruits showed two peaks in both cultivars and in both temperature treatments. Both peaks appeared earlier at 30/25 °C than at 23/18 °C. Percentage of fruit set at 30/25 °C in the second inflorescence was also significantly lower in ‘Toyonoka’ than in ‘Nyoho’. These results indicate that high temperature stress negatively affects the reproductive process in strawberry and that plant response to high temperature stress is cultivar-related in such responses.  相似文献

For prolonged storage of lemons, the best temperature to avoid rots and physiological disorders such as internal browning and peel pitting, was 14°C; for short periods only, storage at lower temperatures, 2–8°C, did not cause damage. Physiological disorders appeared in storage earlier, the lower the storage temperatures, and in fruit picked at a less ripe stage. The general appearance of the fruit is better when stored at the lower temperature. Color development, chemical changes, weight loss, respiration rate and ethylene evolution during storage of lemons at different temperatures and stages of maturity were examined.  相似文献

Early-season (September-October) California-Arizona desert lemons held at 0-2.2°C (mean 1°C) for 2, 4 or 6 weeks showed greater chilling injury than did mid- (January) or late-season (February-March) fruit. More lemons were injured and the symptoms were more severe the longer the fruit was held at 1°C. There was no chilling injury to lemons stored at 5 or 10°C. Curing fruit for one week at 15°C before cold-treatment at 1°C significantly reduced the incidence and severity of chilling injury. Rind injury that developed on cured fruit held at 1°C for two or four weeks for Tephritid fruit fly quarantine purposes was within acceptable levels for mid- and late-season lemons, and may also be acceptable for the early-season lemons if the slight injury to this fruit is disregarded and quarantine treatments are for two or three weeks only.  相似文献

The influence of bulb maturity at bulb harvest on growth and flowering response of Ornithogalum thyrsoides Jacq. ‘Chesapeake Starlight’ was investigated. Experiments were designed to determine if bulb maturity can be induced by bulb storage temperatures and whether bulb maturity can be evaluated by flowering responses. Bulbs with all senesced leaves at harvest were considered “mature” or with emerging young leaves and re-growing young roots were considered “immature”. Bulbs were potted after 0, 3, and 6 weeks of 30 °C or 2 weeks of 10 °C given either in the middle or at the end of 6 weeks of 30 °C. Mature bulbs, as compared to immature bulbs, took longer for leaves to emerge when control bulbs that did not receive any temperature treatment after harvest were planted upon harvest. Leaf emergence of the immature bulbs was significantly earlier than that of the mature bulbs. Mature bulbs which received 30 °C for 3 weeks (30 °C/3 week) flowered 31 days faster than immature bulbs and all bulbs flowered. Leaf emergence and flowering of mature and immature bulbs that received 30 °C/6 weeks or 2 weeks of 10 °C in the middle of 6 weeks of 30 °C (30 °C/2 weeks–10 °C/2 week–30 °C/3 weeks) did not differ from each other. Maturity can be induced by storing immature bulbs at 30 °C/6 weeks. Maturity, as evaluated by flowering percentage and days from leaf emergence to flowering, can be induced in O. thyrsoides. Immature bulbs can, therefore, be harvested for later forcing as long as bulbs are treated with 30 °C/6 weeks. It is proposed that maturity can be correlated with the speed of flowering and bulbs can be harvested at immature physiological state for forcing. Postharvest high-temperature treatment can be used to force immature bulbs that were harvested before the senescence of the leaves.  相似文献

Heat treatments have been applied in fruit postharvest technology for insect disinfestations, decay control, ripening delay and modification of fruit responses to other stresses. Heat treatment affects several aspects of fruit ripening, such as ethylene production and cell wall degradation probably through changes in gene expression and protein synthesis. In this paper, strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch., cv Camarosa) at 50–75% red stage of ripening were heat-treated at 45 °C during 3 h in an air oven and then stored at 20 °C for 0, 4, 18, 24 and 48 h. Fruit firmness was determined and the expression of a set of expansin genes (FaEXP1, FaEXP2, FaEXP4, FaEXP5 and FaEXP6) was analyzed. The firmness of treated fruit was higher than that of control fruit 24 h after treatment, though the differences disappeared after 48 h at 20 °C. The analysis by northern-blot indicated that heat treatments affected differently the expression of expansin genes. The expression of FaEXP1, FaEXP2 and FaEXP6 was lower in treated fruit during the following 24 h post-treatment. The lower expression of these expansin genes could contribute to delay softening after heat treatment.  相似文献

Cell-wall pectic polysaccharides were fractionated by sequential extraction with water, 1% potassium oxalate at room temperature, 0.05 M HCl at 100 °C and 0.05 M NaOH at 4 °C from the three specific tissue zones, i.e., outer pericarp (OP), middle pericarp (MP) and inner pericarp (IP) of the guava fruits during their development and ripening. The water and oxalate-soluble pectic fractions were found to increase, while acid and alkali-soluble pectic fractions had a decreasing trend at ripening phase of fruit, irrespective of the different tissue zones. However, the extent of pectic solubilization was more pronounced in IP region as compared to OP and MP zone of the fruit tissue. The differential degradation of pectic polymers thus points out that ripening as well as tissue softening of guava fruits are centrifugally expressed as evidenced by higher accumulation of sugar and soluble pectic polysaccharides in IP zone of the fruits.  相似文献

This study evaluated the production of five new pomegranate varieties (ME14, ME15, PTO2, PTO7 and CRO1), being all indigenous to Southeastern Spain where the species shows high variability. A morphological and organoleptic characterisation of the edible portion of the seeds were investigated. Some chemical characteristics of the juice, including total soluble solids, pH, acidity and maturity index, were assessed. Morphological characteristics of both the edible and the woody portions of the seed were evaluated. Also productive and organoleptic characteristics of all varieties were considered, being ME14 and ME15 the highest yielders. Furthermore, PTO2 and CRO1 showed the heaviest seeds (both showing an average weight of 0.61 g) while ME15 the lightest one (0.37 g). Regarding seed juice content, there were significant differences among the evaluated varieties; whereas PTO2 and CRO1 showed the highest juice contents, PTO7 yielded the lowest one. However, the cultivar PTO7 showed a significantly higher acidity content than the others, along with the lowest maturity index at all. Finally, ME14 and ME 15 were very interesting because of their high production, large fruit size and excellent seed organoleptic characteristics.  相似文献

‘d'Anjou’ pear fruit, harvested at optimum maturity with flesh firmness of 6.8 kg, were stored at ?1.1°C. Fruit were ripened at 20°C for 15 days following storage for 1–8 months. Dessert qualities were evaluated organoleptically on Day 10 of each ripening period. Changes in fruit firmness, extractable juice, titratable acids, solubl solids, respiration, ethylene production and internal ethylene were determined daily during each ripening period. Fruit firmness declined continually from 6.8 kg at harvest to 4.5 kg after 8 months of storage. Fruit stored for 2–8 months softened with a similar pattern during a 15-day ripening period at 20°C, while fruit stored for 1 month softened at a slower rate during ripening to 3.2 kg, with a coarse and dry texture after 15 days at 20°C. Fruit stored for 2–4 months ripened with the desirable buttery and juicy texture, while those stored for more than 5 months ripened with a coarse or mealy and dry texture. The buttery and juicy texture was highly correlated with a lower extractable juice, which could be used for quantitative determination of storage life based on ripened fruit quality. Changes in titratable acids and soluble solids during each ripening period were not associated with changes in dessert qualities of the ripened pears. Rates of respiration, ethylene production and internal ethylene during ripening at 20°C varied with duration of storage, but were not associated with changes in dessert qualities of the ripened fruit.  相似文献

A study was made of the effect of hot water dips (HWD) at temperatures of 42, 44, 46 and 48 °C (HWD 42 °C, HWD 44 °C, HWD 46 °C and HWD 48 °C, respectively) for 3 min on development of superficial scald and the concentration of α-farnesene and conjugated trienols (CT), CT259, CT269, CT281, as well as OD200 on Granny Smith apple fruits harvested on three dates and stored 125 days in air at 2 °C. HWD 48 °C efficiently decreased surface scald in the second and third harvest. α-Farnesene and CT were measured spectrophotometrically and by HPLC. No clear relationship of OD200 and scald development was observed. Correlation of scald index and OD200 at the end of storage was negative for the second harvest date. There was no significant correlation between the scald index and CT259. Scald index was positively correlated with CT269 after 80 days for the second and third harvest and at the end of storage for the second harvest. CT281 was spectrophotometrically detectable only at the end of the storage, for the third harvest date, in control, HWD 42 °C, and HWD 44 °C. HWD 42 °C had significantly higher CT281 compared to HWD 44 °C and control. HPLC analysis of control samples revealed presence of CT281 in all three harvest dates, and presence of at least two components, as was the case of CT259 and CT269. The ratio of these two components was different for all three CT species. Fruit maturity was an important factor determining the response of fruit to heat and occurrence of superficial scald. The results indicate that a successful treatment using HWD to control superficial scald may be obtained after further research and that there are still some questions on the role of different CT's in scald biochemistry that should be addressed in future research.  相似文献

To investigate the mode of action of UV-C to alleviate CI in banana. Banana [Musa (AAA group), Cavendish subgroup cv. Cavendish] fruits were treated with UV-C at dosages of 0.03 kJ m−2 prior to storage at 8 or 25 °C. UV-C treatment reduced both the incidence and severity of banana fruits stored under low temperature. UV-C treatment reduced membrane damage indicated by lower activity of lipoxygenase (LOX) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. In additions, the in vitro polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity was activated when fruits were stored at CI temperature and UV-C treatment could inhibit the PPO activity. UV-C treatment also delayed yellowing and chlorophyll (Chl) degradation due to the inhibition of chlorophyllase and chl-degrading peroxidase activities. Furthermore, the reduction of ethylene production and respiration rate by UV-C treatment results in extended postharvest shelf life of banana. These finding suggest that the loss of cellular compartments in consequence of membrane degradation, combined with the increase of PPO activity, might contribute to the development of CI in banana peel. UV-C treatment may play an important role in maintained membrane integrity and inhibited PPO activity, reducing the severity of CI symptom and delayed ripening in banana. This novel technique may offer an advance in postharvest handling of bananas and other chilling-sensitive commodities in order to reduce postharvest losses resulting from CI.  相似文献
