Most plants benefit from mycorrhizal symbiosis through improvement of water status and nutrient uptake. A factorial experiment with complete randomized blocks design was carried out in greenhouse at Tabriz University, Iran in 2005–2006. Experimental treatments were (a) irrigation interval (7, 9 and 11 days), (b) soil condition (sterile and non-sterile) and (c) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species (Glomus versiforme, Glomus intraradices, Glomus etunicatum) and non-mycorrhizal (NM) plants as control. Onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Azar-shahr) seeds were sown in sterile nursery and inoculated with fungi species. One nursery left uninoculated as control. Nine weeks old seedlings then were transplanted to the pots. Average pre-irrigation soil water contents reached to about 67, 61.6 and 57.5% of FC corresponding to 7, 9 and 11 days irrigation intervals, respectively. At onion bulb maturity stage (192 days after transplanting), yield, water use efficiency (WUE) and yield response factor (Ky) were determined. The results indicated that AMF colonization increased soil water depletion significantly. G. versiforme under both soil conditions (sterile and non-sterile) and G. etunicatum in sterile soil depleted soil water effectively (P < 0.05). Mycorrhizal fungi improved WUE significantly (P < 0.0001) in both soil conditions. It raised by G. versiforme about 2.4-fold (0.289 g mm−1) in comparison with the control (0.117 g mm−1). G. intraradices and G. etunicatum also had significantly higher WUE than control. Apparently water deficit in 11-day irrigation interval led to lower yield and WUE compared to 9-day interval; the later resulted highest WUE (0.254 g mm−1). Mycorrhizal plants increased seasonal ET significantly due to enhancing in plant growth; G. versiforme in both sterile and non-sterile soil and G. etunicatum in sterile soil had the highest ET. Bulb yield was influenced by irrigation period and fungi species. G. versiforme produced higher yield than other treatments (135.27 g/pot). Mycorrhizal plants in 11-day irrigation interval in spite of suffering from water stress had more bulb yield than non-mycorrhizal plants in all irrigation intervals. Yield in general was higher in 9-day treatments than other irrigating internals significantly (P < 0.05). Onion yield response factor (Ky) was decreased by AMF colonization; implying that symbiosed plants become less responsive to water deficit (longer irrigation interval) compared to the control ones.  相似文献

Elucidation of the effects of different quantities of nitrogen (N) and water applied through drip and furrow irrigation on fruit yield and water use efficiency (WUE) in eggplant is essential for formulating proper management practices for sustainable production. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the independent and interactive effects of four levels of N and different quantities of water applied through drip as well as furrow irrigation on eggplant fruit yield, agronomic efficiency of N and WUE. In the present field investigation, ridge planting with each furrow and alternate furrow irrigation were compared with drip irrigation at three levels of water: 100%, 75% and 50% of each furrow irrigation (designated as D1.0, D0.75 and D0.5). The four levels of N studied were 90, 120, 150 and 180 kg N ha−1 (designated as N90, N120, N150 and N180). The eggplant hybrid BH-1 was transplanted on August 5, 2004 at the spacing of 60 cm × 45 cm.  相似文献

The importance of root size system has long been recognized as crucial to cope with drought conditions. This investigation was conducted to: (i) evaluate the variability in root size system of hot pepper at maturity; (ii) estimate the effect of root size system on yield under drought conditions; and (iii) effect of water stress on xylem vessel development and total xylem cross-sectional area in roots of hot pepper cultivars. Twelve diverse hot pepper cultivars were grown in wooden boxes with two different water treatments, normal and in 50% water application as water deficit condition. Mean primary root length (PRL) showed a significant positive correlation with final fruit yield at normal as well as stressed condition. Total dry mass of fruit was reduced by 34.7% in drought treatments (DI) compared to full watered treatment (FI). At harvest, water-stressed plants had 21% lower root dry weight mass but higher root:shoot ratio other than FI. PRL, lateral root density, total xylem area per root cross-section showed a significant positive relationship with fruit yield. Also, lateral root density was higher in cultivars with higher xylem density, particularly in tolerant cultivars. Lateral root density (r = 0.847, P < 0.001) and total xylem cross-sectional area in root (r = 0.926, P < 0.001) were tightly related with total biomass production. The importance of root traits contributing to withstand drought in hot pepper is discussed.  相似文献

Studying crop energy partitioning and evapotranspiration for different irrigation methods is important in optimizing efficient water-saving irrigation, developing suitable irrigation scheduling and improving crop water use efficiency. Two experiments were conducted to compare the energy partitioning and evapotranspiration of hot pepper (Capsicum annum L.) between furrow and drip irrigation methods under two adjacent solar greenhouses in northwest China. Results indicate that irrigation method affected the energy partitioning and evapotranspiration of hot pepper plants and these results were corroborated in a greenhouse study. Compared to drip irrigation, furrow irrigation increased daytime average net radiation (Rn), latent (λET) and sensible (H) heat fluxes by 12–29, 37–53 and 9–23%, respectively, but decreased soil heat flux (G) by 7–19%. Furrow irrigation also resulted in higher λET/Rn and lower H/Rn and G/Rn and increased total evapotranspiration by 55.5% and produced a higher crop coefficient. Total evapotranspiration was 562.3 and 361.6 mm over whole growth stage for furrow and drip irrigation methods, respectively. And drip irrigation increased the total yield and water use efficiency by 18.2 and 80.4%, respectively, before late fruit bearing and harvesting stage. In conclusion, drip irrigation is an effective and water-saving irrigation method in hot pepper production to be used in greenhouse.  相似文献

The effects of different irrigation regimes on yield and quality of green beans (Phaselous vulgaris L.) irrigated with a drip irrigation system under field conditions in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were evaluated along two years. Irrigation regimes consisted of four irrigation intervals based on four levels of cumulative pan evaporation (Epan) values (I1: 15; I2: 30; I3: 45 and I4: 60 mm); irrigations occurred on the respective treatments when Epan reached target values, and three plant–pan coefficients as for irrigation levels (Kcp1 = 0.50, Kcp2 = 0.75 and Kcp3 = 1.00). Irrigation intervals varied from 2 to 4 days in I1, 5 to 7 days in I2, 8 to 10 days in I3 and 10 to 12 days in I4 treatments in 2004 and 2005 growing seasons Both irrigation levels and intervals significantly affected the green bean yields. Maximum and minimum yields were obtained from the I1Kcp3 and I4Kcp1 treatments as 24,320 and 14,200 kg ha−1 in the first, and 23,850 and 13,210 kg ha−1 in the second experimental year, respectively. As the Kcp value decreased the total yields in each irrigation interval also decreased. However, with the longer irrigation interval (I4), lower yields were obtained with all Kcp coefficients. Seasonal water use (ET) values in the treatments varied from 276 mm in I4Kcp1 to 400 mm in I1Kcp3 in the first experimental year, and from 365 mm in I4Kcp1 to 472 mm in I1Kcp3 in the second experimental year. Significant linear relations were found between green bean yield and seasonal ET for each experimental year. Irrigation intervals resulted in similar water use in the treatments with the same Kcp value. Water use efficiency (WUE) and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) values were significantly influenced by the irrigation intervals and plant–pan coefficients. WUE ranged from 4.33 kg m−3 in I4Kcp3 to 6.08 kg m−3 in I1Kcp3 in 2004, and varied from 3.62 kg m−3 in I4Kcp1 to 5.43 kg m−3 in I2Kcp2 in the 2005 growing season. Maximum IWUE was observed in I2Kcp1 (6.16 kg m−3), and minimum IWUE was in I4Kcp3 treatment (3.83 kg m−3) in the experimental years. Both irrigation levels and irrigation frequencies had significantly different effects on quality parameters such as fresh bean length, width, number of seed per pod and 100 fresh bean weights. In conclusion, I1Kcp3 irrigation regime is recommended for field grown green beans under the Mediterranean conditions in order to attain higher yields with improved quality.  相似文献

The experiment was conducted in a solar greenhouse to determine the optimum irrigation frequency and quantity for cucumber under subsurface drip irrigation based on evaporation from a 20 cm diameter pan (Ep) placed above the crop canopy. Two irrigation intervals (I1: 4-day and I2: 8-day) and three plant-pan coefficients (Kcp1: 0.6; Kcp2: 0.8 and Kcp3: 1.0) were compared. Crop evapotranspiration (ET) and fruits yield increased with the increasing of irrigation water. The Kcp3 treatments had the highest yield, while Kcp2 had the highest irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) and water use efficiency (WUE) values in both irrigation intervals. The yields of Kcp2 treatments decreased only 4.87% and 5.93% in both intervals though total irrigation water decreased 14.3% compared to Kcp3 treatment. Irrigation water amount significantly (P < 0.01) and positively affected the fruit number and fruit water content, whereas significantly and negatively affected the soluble sugar (SS), Vitamin C (Vc) and free amino acid (FAA) content in fruits. In conclusion, I2Kcp2 (0.8Ep with 8-day interval) was the optimum irrigation schedule for cumber plants grown in solar greenhouse under subsurface drip irrigation in arid and semi-arid areas that are in lack of water resources.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of three drip irrigation methods (i.e. conventional drip irrigation (CDI), both sides of the root-zone irrigated with full watering, alternate drip irrigation (ADI), both sides of the root-zone irrigated alternatively with half of the full watering, and fixed drip irrigation (FDI), only one side of the root-zone irrigated with half of the full watering) on growth, physiology, root hydraulic conductance and water use of young apple tree under different nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) fertilization (i.e. CK (no fertilization), N1 (0.2 g N/kg), N2 (0.4 g N/kg), P1 (0.2 g P2O5/kg) and P2 (0.4 g P2O5/kg)). Results show that compared to CDI, ADI and FDI reduced mean root dry mass, daily transpiration, root hydraulic conductance (Kr), leaf photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance of young apple tree by 6.9 and 27.7, 29.3 and 45.0, 6.8 and 37.9, 2.5 and 4.8, 32.6 and 33.0, 22.1 and 22.3%, but increased leaf water use efficiency (WUE) by 31.3 and 29.8%, respectively when they saved irrigation water by 50%. Compared to the CK, N or P fertilization significantly increased Kr, and Kr was increased with the increased N or P fertilization level. There were parabolic correlations between Kr and root dry mass, daily transpiration and stomatal conductance. Our results indicate that ADI reduced transpiration rate significantly, but it did not reduce photosynthesis rate and Kr significantly, thus alternate drip irrigation improved WUE and the regulation ability of water balance in plants.  相似文献

Greenhouse-grown hot pepper was used to investigate the effect of Time-Space deficit irrigation (TSDI), a newly developing irrigation technique based on regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) and partial rootzone drying (PRD), by measuring plant growth, yield and irrigation water use efficiency. The treatments consisted of factorial combinations of three factors, organized following an orthogonal L9 (3)4 test design with four growing stages. Three irrigation strategies (conventional furrow irrigation with full-water when soil water content was lower by 80% of field capacity (F), conventional furrow irrigation with 50% of full-water (D) and alternate furrow irrigation with 50% of full-water (P)) as the main plot factor were applied to select the optimum irrigation parameter at different stages of crop development, the treatment in which irrigation water was applied to both sides of root system when soil water content was lower by 80% of field capacity during all stages was considered as control (FFFF). Water consumption showed some significant effect of irrigation treatment during the growing period of different drought stress patterns application, and therefore decreased in these treatments to a level around 54.68–70.33% of FFFF. Total dry mass was reduced by 1.17–38.66% in TSDI treatments compared to FFFF. However, the root–shoot ratio of FFFF was lower than other treatments and the differences from FFFF and other TSDI treatments were statistically significant. The highest total fresh fruit yield (19.57 T ha−1) was obtained in the FFFF treatment. All deficit irrigations increased the water use efficiency of hot pepper from a minimum of 1.33% to a maximum of 54.49%. At harvest, although there was difference recorded as single fruit weight and single fruit volume were reduced under the TSDI treatments, total soluble solids concentration of fruit harvested under the water-deficit treatments were higher compared to FFFF.  相似文献

为明确吐鲁番市设施蔬菜水分高效利用的合理灌溉方式,调查了沟灌和滴灌对吐鲁番市日光温室早春茬哈密瓜、黄瓜、辣椒和番茄产量、效益和水分利用效率的影响。结果表明:在吐鲁番市,滴灌哈密瓜每667 m2 产量比沟灌高100 kg,每667 m2纯收入多1 017.6 元;滴灌黄瓜、辣椒和番茄每667 m2产量和经济效益均稍低于沟灌;但滴灌哈密瓜、黄瓜、辣椒和番茄的水分利用效率和水分经济利用效率比沟灌高1~3 倍。综合考虑,滴灌是吐鲁番市日光温室蔬菜生产中应重点推广的灌溉方式。  相似文献

In this study we implemented a potted water supply experiment for 100 days by a completely random sole-factored design with five treatments: 100% (W100), 80% (W80), 60% (W60), 40% (W40) and 20% (W20) of water holding capacity (WHC), corresponding to the soil volumetric water content (SVWC) maintained at 38.8 ± 0.3%, 31.6 ± 1.7%, 25.6 ± 1.3%, 16.5 ± 0.7%, and 8.1 ± 1.1%, respectively. The objective was to evaluate the ability of the 2-month-old Campylotropis polyantha (Franch.) Schindl. seedlings to tolerate drought and to explore the mechanism resisting drought. We monitored the growth process of seedling height and leaf number monthly and further investigated those changes in plant growth, dry mass accumulation and allocation, water-use efficiency (WUE), leaf functional traits, chlorophyll a fluorescence and pigment contents across the water deficit gradient. We found that the seedlings presented optimal growth, dry mass production, and physiological activity only at the W100 and W80 treatments and afterwards significantly decreased with progressive water deficit; the WUE was improved under moderate water stress (W60 and W40) but reduced under severe stress (W20). The serious leaf shedding, growth stopping and seedling death under the W20 condition revealed that the current-year shrub seedlings could not withstand severe drought. Water stress-induced decrease in total plant leaf area due to a combination of limited expansion of younger leaves and shedding of old leaves caused the leaf area ratio reduction under drought. The reduced mesophyll cell was a major anatomical response of leaves along the water stress gradient. The progressive water stress significantly damaged light harvesting complex and reduced photochemical processes and PSII activity. Our results clearly showed that the current-year shrub seedlings took the avoidance and tolerance mechanisms to withstand progressive drought stress and around 25.6% SVWC and around 12.3% SVWC separately are thresholds to limit the optimal growth and dry mass production and to last growing and surviving for the current-year shrub seedlings.  相似文献

This study was conducted to compare two water-saving practices, deficit irrigation (DI) and partial rootzone drying (PRD), and examine how they affected soil water distribution, water use, growth and yield of greenhouse grown hot pepper compared to commercial irrigation (CI). Control (CI) in which irrigation water was applied to both sides of the system when soil water content was lower by 80% of field capacity; deficit irrigation (DI50, DI75) in which 50% and 75% irrigation water of CI supplied to both sides of the root system; 1PRD with half of the root system exposed to soil drying and other half kept well-watered with 50% irrigation water of CI, and 2PRD with 50% irrigation water of CI supplied, half to fixed side of the root system. The results showed mean soil volumetric water content of DI75, DI50, 1PRD and 2PRD were lower by 21.06%, 28.32%, 24.48% and 34.76%, respectively than that of CI after starting the experiment. Water consumption showed some significant effect of irrigation treatments during the growing period of drought stress application, and therefore decreased in DI75, DI50, 1PRD and 2PRD to a level around 75% and 50% of CI. All the DI and PRD treatments resulted in a reduction of total dry mass of 7.29–44.10%, shoot biomass of 24.97–47.72% compared to CI, but an increase in the root–shoot ratio of 12.50–35.42% compared to the control and with significant differences between 2PRD, 1PRD, DI50 and CI. The yield of 1PRD was significantly reduced by 23.98% compared to CI (19,566 kg hm−2) over a period of 109 days after transplanting. However, the 1PRD treatment had 17.21% and 24.54% additional yield over the DI50 and 2PRD treatments and had 52.05% higher irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) than CI treatment. At harvest, although there was a significant difference recorded as single fruit weight and single fruit volume were reduced under the DI and PRD treatments, total soluble solids concentration of fruit harvested under the water-deficit treatments were higher compared to CI. Stomatal conductance measured in fresh leaf was the lowest under 1PRD treatment relative to CI and other treatments. The low stomatal conductance of fresh-leaf issue observed in the work supported the root signaling mechanism reported earlier in plants having undergone partial root drying cycles.  相似文献

This study examines the feasibility of using saline irrigation water for commercial pot cultivation of three ornamentals: Calceolaria hybrida, Calendula officinalis and Petunia hybrida. Two saline treatments were assayed: irrigation with low saline tap water (electrical conductivity = 1.16 dS m−1), and irrigation with a high saline solution of NaCl 100 mM + CaSO4 10 mM + MgSO4 2.5 mM (electrical conductivity = 12.5 dS m−1). When the control plants reached marketable size the watering was stopped and the plant response to drought was studied. Petunia and Calceolaria were tolerant to salinity. Petunia saline-treated plants reduced their growth slightly and increased N and chlorophyll contents in the leaves. Calceolaria experienced a strong reduction in growth and a delay in flowering but no toxicity symptoms or mortality was recorded. These species were moderate NaCl accumulators. Calendula was sensitive to salinity: 16% of the plants died and the surviving ones experienced a heavy reduction of growth, a decrease in chlorophyll and a large accumulation of NaCl in the leaves. Saline pre-conditioned plants of Calceolaria and Petunia were tolerant to drought. In these plants, leaf water content and, specifically, leaf relative water content were sustained longer than in non-pre-conditioned plants throughout the drought period. In Calendula, leaf relative water content decreased at the same rate in pre-conditioned and non-pre-conditioned plants. Consequently, salinization did not confer drought resistance upon this species. Possible factors determining the tolerance to drought in saline pre-conditioned plants are discussed.  相似文献

Water efficiency is a key concept to solve water-shortage problems in semiarid areas. Deficit irrigation (DI) in many crops has frequently proved to be an efficient tool to optimise water-use efficiency. Three different DI strategies were studied for commercial orchards of mature sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck, cv. Salustiana and cv. Navelina) from 2006 to 2008: sustained deficit irrigation (SDI), regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), and low-frequency deficit irrigation (LFDI) all defined physiologically with stem-water potential thresholds. The experimental research plots were located in the Guadalquivir river basin, SW Spain. The effects of DI treatments on the fruit yield and on the crop-water status, by the integrated stem-water potential (Ψint) were analysed. Also, the benefits of DI in terms of agricultural water-use efficiency (WUEagr) and financial water-use efficiency (WUEf) were estimated for each irrigation strategy. Different relationships were estimated between these parameters and irrigation and total water applied, in order to establish the best irrigation strategy for different irrigation regimes. Yield and Ψint showed significant differences consistent with the water amounts applied, although the crop response was influenced by other parameters such as crop variety and irrigation strategy. In this sense, treatments with similar irrigation rates and Ψint resulted in different yield values, evidencing the importance of these factors. Regarding the crop variety, the results showed that cv. Salustiana responded better than cv. Navelina to DI, from the physiological and agricultural perspectives. In terms of water savings, the RDI and LFDI reduced water use by between 1000 and 1250 m3 ha−1, respectively, with similar yields in comparison to the fully irrigated treatment, significantly improving the WUE. Consequently, the WUEf, and WUEagr were more strongly affected by deficit-irrigation strategy rather than the total water supplied. Thus, the amount of irrigation water would have a relative importance but other variables such as the irrigation strategy, would decidedly influence prudent water management in semiarid areas.  相似文献

The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Field ‘Taoues’, southern Tunisia (34°N, 10°E) to examine the effect of irrigation schedules on water relations for young olive trees, cultivars Chétoui, Chemlali, Coratina, Picholine and Manzanille. Plants were cultivated at 7 m × 7 m spacing and drip irrigated from April to September. Irrigation amounts (IA) of 20%ETc, 50%ETc and 100%ETc were applied, where ETc is the FAO crop evapotranspiration. The effect of IA on midday leaf water potential (Ψleaf), stomatal resistance (Rs) and conductance (gs), soil (Hv) and relative leaf (RWC) water contents was studied. Results showed that a further increase in IA was not systematically followed by an increase of water potential, production and WUE values. Some controversial responses were observed following to a variety with large seasonal variations. At the beginning of the growing season, differences between treatments were not very important because soil water content was still high enough to prevent important changes in Ψleaf values. The most stressed trees showed potentials of −1.53 MPa for Picholine cv. and ranging between −2.30 MPa and −2.10 MPa for the other varieties depending on IA. The less stressed trees provided potentials of −0.97 MPa for Picholine cv. and varying between −1.63 MPa and −2.13 MPa for cultivars Coratina, Manzanille, Chétoui and Chemlali. Then, as the season progresses, and when IA was increased from 20%ETc to 50%ETc, Ψleaf values decreased significantly for cultivars Chemlali (−3.05 MPa), Coratina (−3.75 MPa), Manzanille (−3.0 MPa) and Chétoui (−3.5 MPa). At 100%ETc, Manzanille and Picholine cultivars show better water status with respective potentials of −2.7 MPa and −2.6 MPa. Stomatal resistance monitoring showed maximums at midday for all cultivars with pick value of 4.45 s/cm recorded for Chétoui cultivar irrigated at 50% ETc. The most important variations were recorded for cultivar Chemlali which seem to be the ablest to regulate stomata aperture. Close coordination between Ψleaf and gs and Ψleaf and RWC measurements was found. But, the response varied following to treatment. At low irrigation levels (20%ETc and 50%ETc), gs was found to be linearly and positively correlated to Ψleaf. It increased linearly and positively with increasing values of Ψleaf (r of 0.84 and 0.96, respectively). At 100%ETc, Ψleaf is found to be correlated to gs following to a polynomial function with an optimum gs value of 450 mmol/m2/s and Ψleaf of about −2.5 MPa.  相似文献

Water logging and salinity of the soil alter both the physical and biological environment of plant roots. In two experiments, we investigated the effects of imposed aeration on yield and the physiological response of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) variety Improved Apollo growing under protected conditions over a range of salinities (the salinity experiment), and under constant field capacity (FC) or drier soil conditions (the moisture experiment). Subsurface irrigation with aerated water (12% air in water) stimulated above-ground growth, and enhanced the reproductive performance through earliness for flowering and fruiting compared with the control. Fruit yield of tomato with aeration in the moisture experiment was increased by 21% compared with the control (4.2 kg versus 3.7 kg per plant), and the effect of aeration on fruit yield was greater in FC than in the drier treatment. Fruit yield was increased by 38% in saline soil due to aeration compared with the non-aerated control. Increasing salinity from 2 to 8.8 dS m−1, and 10 dS m−1 reduced fruit yield by 18% and 62%, respectively, but 4 dS m−1 did not suppress yield. Aeration in both the experiments increased plant water use and water use efficiency (WUE), expressed as weight per unit of applied water. Biomass WUE was greater by 16% and 32% in the moisture and salinity experiments, respectively. The increased yield with aeration was also accompanied by an increased harvest index (HI) defined as the proportion of dry fruit biomass to total dry biomass, greater mean fruit weight, high fruit DM, and increase in leaf chlorophyll content and shoot: root ratio, and a reduced water stress index (computed from the difference between air and leaf temperature). The benefit gained from aerating irrigation water was not only observed under conditions where air-filled porosity may be low (e.g., in poorly structure sodic soils, or at field capacity in clay soils), but also in drier soils.  相似文献

Phillyrea angustifolia is a native Mediterranean species, which has recently been considered suitable for landscaping purposes. We hypothesize that hardening plants in the nursery could increase their tolerance of drought after transplanting. The effects of paclobutrazol (PBZ) and different irrigation regimes applied to seedlings planted in 4.5-L plastic pots were investigated. PBZ was applied as a substrate drench at 0 mL L−1 (untreated control), 30 mL L−1 and 40 mL L−1 per plant and three drip irrigation treatments were used: I100, plants watered at water-holding capacity, I60, plants watered to 60% of I100, and I40, plants watered to 40% of I100. Plants were pot-grown in an unheated greenhouse near the Mediterranean coast of SE Spain. A reduction in plant height and stem diameter was observed one month after being drenched by PBZ. The irrigation regime significantly affected plant height after three months of cultivation and did not affect stem diameter during the nursery period. Significant interaction between the irrigation regime and PBZ dose was evident for plant height during the nursery period. I100 and untreated PBZ plants had the lowest stomata density. PBZ doses significantly reduced canopy weight and leaf area compared with the control. I60 plants showed the greatest leaf area and canopy dry weight, and the highest root length, dry weight, volume and number of forks. Both I60 and I40 treatments showed an equally high water use efficiency (WUE) (calculated as the total plant dry matter divided by the total amount of water supplied by the irrigation treatments). In general, PBZ induced a suite of morphological adaptations (increased root-to-shoot ratio and stomata density, decreased leaf area reduction, fine roots, etc.) that might allow the plants to tolerate drought after transplanting.  相似文献

In dryland areas, secondarily treated municipal wastewater could be used in extensive green roof systems. In this study, the effects of water and salt stress on a crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plant, Sedum kamtschaticum Fischer, was evaluated under intermittent saline irrigation. The salinity of irrigation water varied from 6.0 to 18.0 dS m?1. A reduction in soil water content and an increase in soil water electrical conductivity (EC) were observed during the irrigation interval (5–17 d) as a result of evapotranspiration (ET). The effect of soil water potential (SWP) on reduction of the ET ratio (ETr) was successfully described with an equation that could be applicable to a wide range of soil salinities and water contents, to estimate ET. In this study, the stress factor was defined as the integration of solute potential, and matric potential less soil water content for optimum growth (less than ?0.1 MPa) with elapsed time. The stress factor rapidly reduced total ET in CAM plants but effectively increased water-use efficiency (WUE). Thus, by using CAM plants for green roofs under intermittent saline irrigation, the need for irrigation water is reduced without a considerable loss of plant biomass.  相似文献

We investigated the hypothesis that split root fertigation (SRF) approach could provide complementary benefits over traditional fertigation (TF) in terms of water use, vegetative growth and yield formation in the high radiation season and under two atmospheric conditions in a greenhouse. Plants of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Cumuli) were grown in a traditional high-wire cultivation system in a peat growing medium. In the SRF method the root system of a plant was separated into two compartments over the crop cycle. One compartment received fertigation solution with low EC (1.2 dS m−1) and the other compartment solution with high EC (3.5 dS m−1) value. In the TF method the EC value of fertigation solution was 2.4 dS m−1. The atmospheric conditions included an open (ventilated) and a semi-closed (cooled) greenhouse. The employment of cooling resulted in an enhancement of the average CO2 in a semi-closed (810 ppm) over an open (530 ppm) greenhouse resulting in a yield improvement (37%). SRF improved water uptake in both atmospheric conditions and water use efficiency (WUE) in an open greenhouse. The water uptake in SRF was highest in the root part with the low EC values, namely 61% in the open and 66% in the semi-closed greenhouse. In both atmospheric conditions, SRF decreased flower abortion, leading to an improved fruit set with a small effect on vegetative growth. SRF increased yield by 21% in the open and 17% in the semi-closed greenhouse compared to TF in corresponding greenhouses.  相似文献

In the northeast of Brazil the drought period determines the yield period of the sugar apple (Annona squamosa L.). As a result, the use of irrigation is essential to stagger production over the course of the year. The results shown here represent an analysis of water status levels in sugar apples in daylight and seasonal periods in semi-arid regions. Two plant groups were studied: one without irrigation and the other with irrigation during drought months. This study showed that younger leaves displayed greater stomatal conductance and transpiration. In drought months, even in irrigated plants, the high air moisture deficit had a strong influence on the stomatal closure, which did not translate into a reduction in transpiration. Over the same period, the leaf water potential was −1.8 and −2.9 MPa at mid-day in irrigated and non-irrigated plants, respectively, and only the irrigated plants could recover their leaf hydration level at night. With a water deficit, plants showed greater control of transpiration through stomatal closure, with a linear relationship between stomatal conductance and transpiration.  相似文献

A series of experiments were conducted with greenhouse cucumber and pepper plants to determine the effects of oxygen enrichment of the irrigation water on yield and fruit shelf-life. The experiments were carried out in soilless culture in research greenhouses. Depending on the experiment, treatments included sub-ambient (2 mg L−1), ambient (5–6 mg L−1), medium (16 mg L−1) and high (30–40 mg L−1) levels of oxygen in the supply tank. Cucumber plants were grown in yellow cedar sawdust and pepper plants in either sawdust or perlite. Oxygen enrichment resulted in a promotion of cucumber yield in only one experiment; in two other experiments, none of the oxygen treatments, including those at sub-ambient levels, had an effect. There were no effects of oxygen enrichment on pepper yield. However, in both cucumber and pepper, fruit shelf-life was extended in oxygen-enriched treatments. In terms of system efficacy, oxygen levels in the irrigation water were measured at the dripper and found to decrease by 20–67% of initial values compared to the supply tank values, depending on the initial oxygen concentration and on the experiment. Oxygen concentrations decreased even further to virtually ambient levels when measured in the drain water or in the substrate reservoir. Cucumber plant growth was promoted under conditions which facilitated consistently high oxygen in the root zone, achieved through heavy irrigation (1 min in two) with oxygen-enriched nutrient solution of plants grown in saturated substrate (pumice). However, those extreme irrigation rates would not be practical for commercial cucumber or pepper production. Overall, this study demonstrates that oxygen enrichment of porous substrates under typical hydroponic conditions is difficult and possibly because of this, effects on yield are infrequent. However, fruit shelf-life may be improved.  相似文献
